Six Goal Polo Player Sugar Erskine Joins Horses Healing Hearts as Polo Ambassador

Wellington, FL – January 16, 2015 – Horses Healing Hearts (HHH) is the only non-profit organization in the country that provides an equine facilitated learning program designed to help children dealing with addiction in their homes. Now, the national organization is proud to announce that the internationally successful six-goal polo player Sugar Erskine has joined the growing nonprofit organization as their second Polo Ambassador. His first action as an HHH Ambassador will be co-chairing the 2015 Hope through Horses Golf Tournament alongside Lisa Jacquin this February 23, 2015, at The Wanderers Club in Wellington, Florida.

HHH teaches empowerment and life-coping skills, and the organization helps children build self-confidence by learning about horse care and riding. Each week, over 50 children are served from the greater Palm Beach County community.

The organization’s mission hit close to the heart with Erskine, who had no difficulty in recognizing the potential struggles that can take place in a home with addiction. His own triumphs over addiction have led him to want to give back to children who may be struggling due to their home environment.

“I couldn’t find a better way for me to do justice to what I did. That’s the way I see it. Now it’s up to me to give [the organization] the attention it needs and the respect it deserves. If that’s the service I’m able to do in this world, that’s something,” said Erskine. “Being able to give [the children] a little bit of hope if they see my story, or my idea, or the way it was, they can have a little bit of hope that it can change for them as well. It can be something that they can at least have a dream about.”

The unique approach the 501(c)3 charitable organization takes by educating through horses really stood out to Erskine, since many of the children who become involved in the program have very little exposure to horses prior to joining. Without a background in horses, many of the children come in with a limited understanding of their behavior, but they are quickly able to relate to the connections the horses and humans make.

“Just the fact that we have the horses there to learn from is a huge part. I always talk about the horses, but that’s because I’m so involved in them. When they see that connection with the horse, it’s real – that’s the glue that binds us all together when we’re there,” Erskine described.

Erskine is very excited about co-chairing the golf tournament, which is one of his other passions. Jacquin breathed life to the event last spring after becoming HHH’s first Show Jumping Ambassador, and Erskine has pledged to help get other players involved in this charity event. This fundraiser will complement HHH’s other major function, the Fourth Annual White White West Party, which will be held on February 20, 2015.

“I love golf; I’m a fanatic. I’m useless at it, which is the worst part!” laughed Erskine. “I’m trying to organize the sponsors and the players; all of us polo players all kind of do favors for each other, and there were a lot of people who were there to support me during my time of need, so I know that they will support an organization I feel such a connection to. HHH hits pretty close to home for me, so it’s not a hard thing for me to talk about or be involved with.”

Decorated Olympic Medalist Lisa Jacquin Joins Horses Healing Hearts as Show Jumping Ambassador

Wellington, FL – April 3, 2014 – Horses Healing Hearts (HHH) is the first non-profit organization of its kind, easing the pain of kids growing up in a home with substance abuse through the healing powers of horses. There are more than 28 million children of alcoholics, but HHH is the only organization that brings their smiles into full fruition each week by joining them with both the gentle giants and mentors. The inspirational national non-profit organization is proud to announce that two-time Olympic Silver Medalist Lisa Jacquin has joined Horses Healing Hearts as their second Show Jumping Ambassador.

In September 2009, Lizabeth Olszewski of Wellington, FL founded HHH, and in the last five years, the organization has blossomed while raising awareness and funds to help ease the pain of children of addiction. Horse Healing Hearts provides these children with the opportunity to help heal emotionally by working with horses while having fun and learning positive life-coping skills, responsibility and confidence. Using equine experiential learning, HHH is the only program in the nation that works with the specific demographic of children of alcoholics and addicts.  Horses help them understand life, themselves and how to cope with their parents’ addiction to substance abuse.

“I grew up with the understanding that you should help people,” Jacquin said. “My mother was very involved on a very deep level with non-profit organizations, and it stuck with me through life. I do a lot of work with smaller charities in Pennsylvania, but now that I am in Wellington for an extended time, Horses Healing Hearts seemed like the perfect fit. There are a lot of different entities in the horse world, but I feel as though HHH really brings them all together.”

Born in Arizona, Jacquin began riding at an early age. She was fortunate enough to train with top rider Kay Love while competing as a junior, and later furthered her riding while attending college in California. After graduating she packed her bags and moved her tack trunk to the East Coast where she trained with Michael Matz, providing her with the ideal set up for the brilliant career ahead.

Jacquin is a decorated show jumper, who rode show jumping’s most beloved thoroughbred, For The Moment, to the career of a lifetime. For The Moment became one of the most successful American Thoroughbreds to ever compete, holding his own in a time when European Warmbloods were dominating. Jacquin partnered with the bay gelding in 1981, taking him on as a ride until something better came along.

Although at first she was unimpressed, For The Moment eventually won her heart. She persevered through his difficult personality, and in 1983 entered him in his first major event. Their first win was the beginning to a very long and exciting show jumping career.

“For The Moment was a racehorse that I purchased as a 7-year-old. He was not a great racehorse, but I bought him and brought him along through the ranks,” Jacquin recounted. “He was difficult and very headstrong, but he was the epitome of a show horse. He was small and kind of scrawny; nobody thought much of him. He had a heart of gold though. When he walked in the ring he was a winner. He was difficult in the barn, on the flat, and had some hang-ups, but he was a show horse, and every time the gate opened you could count on him.”

In 1987, Jacquin helped the U.S. Show Jumping Team take home a Silver Medal at the Pan American Games with For The Moment. They continued on to win a then record six grand prix events, including the prestigious Budweiser American Invitational in 1988. The pair also placed third in the FEI World Cup Finals in Paris, France later that year.

The highlight of their partnership came in 1988 when For The Moment, with Jacquin in the irons, helped the U.S. Show Jumping Team capture the Team Silver Medal at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea. They returned to the Olympics in 1992 in Barcelona, Spain. For The Moment was named AGA Horse of the Year in 1991 and 1994, and in 1995 he became the oldest horse to ever win a show jumping grand prix at the ripe age of 21 when Jacquin guided him to the victory in the Budweiser AGA Show Jumping Championship in Wellington, FL. In 2006, For The Moment was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame, immortalizing his partnership with Jacquin as they took on the world and made numerous contributions to the sport.

“There are times in life where we go through change,” Jacquin stated. “He [For The Moment] was my ticket to see what I was capable of accomplishing. The neatest thing about [me and For The Moment] is that we grew together. It was one of those things where he was my life. He trusted me, and I trusted him. You learn so much from a horse, whether you are in the saddle or out of it. They teach you, and you learn about yourself. The same goes for Horses Healing Hearts and the relationship these kids have with the horses.”

Following the natural progression of her time in the spotlight, Jacquin used her knowledge and life in the saddle to become a trainer. She runs BDJ Enterprises out of Coatesville, PA, but the star-studded rider also travels to Wellington for the Winter Equestrian Festival during the fall and winter months. Jacquin finds joy in bringing along young horses, as well as working with children and developing their skills.

“I am really looking forward to getting more and more involved with the kids and Horses Healing Hearts,” Jacquin said. “I hope to put together a golf tournament for next year that will coincide with their White, White West Benefit. There are so many different organizations and charities, and what I want to do is put something together that would bring the show jumping, polo, dressage and horse enthusiasts together to help raise money and raise awareness. Hopefully it could be a large fundraiser for their organization for many years to come.”

Jacquin concluded, “I was fortunate enough to have a very happy childhood, but seeing how involved my parents were in helping children and adults needing to walk down a different road really affected me. With my own time I would like to be able to be hands-on and assist in training some of the kids to ride. I want to be as helpful as I can and bring people into the organization. I think people are already excited and we are well on our way.”

Peter Wylde Jumping Clinic Benefiting Horses Healing Hearts Concludes with Rave Reviews

Patricia Minter follows Wylde’s instructions as she maneuvers through the gymnastics.

Wellington, FL – January 29, 2014 – Riders and equestrian enthusiasts from all over South Florida gathered at Sunshine Meadows Equestrian Village this weekend to learn from one of the country’s greatest riders, while also supporting a worthwhile cause. Olympic Gold Medalist Peter Wylde generously donated his time in support of Horses Healing Hearts, offering a clinic for riders of varying levels on Sunday, January 26, 2014.

Presenting Sponsor, Cavalor, hosted a luncheon with the Gold Medalist prior to the start of the clinic. Riders and auditors were able to ask questions of the expert, while enjoying the food at the Sunshine Stallion Grille. The restaurant was filled to capacity, and the hour flew by as Wylde discussed his secrets to a winning program.

“I always walk my horses for at least five minutes,” Wylde said as he began the advanced session. “Depending on what I am doing, whether I am flatting or jumping, I adjust my stirrups. Remember that everything we do during this clinic is for the betterment of the rider and the horse. The horse is an athlete, and we must treat it as one.”

Each session consisted of four horse and rider combinations, and Wylde made sure to approach each one with an adept perception of their needs. He worked with them extensively on the flat and then used different gymnastics, including a bounce, to help them collect and balance their horses. By the end of the clinic session, the change in each of the pairs was undeniable.

“He’s a fabulous instructor, but also he really fed into the needs of each individual so beautifully and he is so insightful. It made the whole clinic incredibly worthwhile,” clinic participant Patricia Minter said. “In everyone there was an amazing improvement. To me, he just saw into each person, and he formulated exercises that played to each one of our needs. If I could, I would do this again tomorrow.”

Another advanced session rider, Hannah Bentz, added, “This clinic was amazing. He did such a good job helping both me and my horse move ahead. I got so much out of the hour and a half. It was such a privilege to be able to do this clinic with him. The difference in my horse in the time of the session is just incredible; I never could have asked for that much. I am so thankful to Peter for being an Ambassador to Horses Healing Hearts, as well as to HHH for hosting the clinic.”

Wylde addressed issues with each rider from positioning to tack and techniques to use at home. His approach was very individualized, and riders could not have been more grateful for his support.

GGT Footing’s Cynthia Brewster-Keating raved, “I thought the Peter Wylde Clinic was wonderful. His professional demeanor was fantastic, and his ability to read all of the different horses and offer suggestions for each one of us was particularly interesting for me to hear. I thought all of his exercises were challenging. He was able to keep the group moving, and we got a lot of jumping in, which was why I came. I think he was able to utilize each of the horses’ weaknesses and make them better in the end. I really had a wonderful time. It was one of the best clinics I have ever attended.”

Wylde only became an Ambassador to Horses Healing Hearts about six months ago, and during that time he has not only volunteered with the children and raised awareness about the organization, but also donated his time as the clinician for the Sunshine Series Clinic to help raise funds for the non-profit organization.

“Clinics can be taken two ways: they can be theory, which I try to talk about as much as I can for the auditors and other riders, but one of the reasons why I really only like to do four people in a group is because I can connect with the rider and the horse and improve on the product the rider is producing,” Wylde explained. “I don’t want it to get too watered down. You don’t get that individual one-on-one experience. You can really connect, work with the rider, and show them how to fix it.”

Wylde continued, “I feel like I try to incorporate in my teachings: always simplify. You have to put the one most important idea in a person’s head; you need to have that simplification. I am happy that it all went as well as it did. There were great jumpers and riders today. I think I help to dissipate nervousness in people. I think nerves are 60 percent of the problem. I try to break it up for the horse and the rider to make it more comfortable.”

The Sunshine Series Peter Wylde Jumping Clinic was nothing short of a success with sold out riding sessions and over 40 auditors in attendance. Horses Healing Hearts would like to thank all sponsors for the clinic including Cavalor, Tredstep Ireland, Dover Saddles and Sunshine Meadows.

Olympian Peter Wylde Announced as Clinician for Horses Healing Hearts Sunshine Series Jumping Clinic

Peter Wylde attended a Horses Healing Hearts session where he interacted with the children and experienced the program first-hand.

Wellington, FL – January 14, 2014 – It was only four months ago that Olympic Gold Medalist Peter Wylde joined Horses Healing Hearts (HHH) as their first Show Jumping Ambassador. After attending an HHH Saturday Session last month, Wylde made the decision to step forward as a clinician for the all-new Sunshine Series Jumping Clinic to be held Sunday, January 26, 2014 at Sunshine Meadows in Delray Beach, Fla. It was a direct result of his time spent with the children during that Saturday afternoon that led him to step forward for the first clinic of the series.

“I was impressed with the honesty of the children and their ability to talk about things that were troubling them,” Wylde stated. “All the kids present made it clear how important this program was to them and how much joy it brought to their lives. This was priceless. The program confirms to me the value of a relationship between a horse and a person.”

The Sunshine Series Circuit will kick off with the jumping clinic by Wylde and will be followed by three show dates to be announced in the near future. Peter Wylde’s clinic on Sunday will offer three, 90 minute sessions with four riders in each. Levels are as follows: beginner (2’3 – 2’6″), intermediate (2’9″ – 3′) and advanced (3’3″ – 3’6″).

One hundred percent of the net proceeds of the clinic are benefitting Horses Healing Hearts; fees are as follows: $200 per rider and $25 per auditor. Please contact Liz Olszewski to reserve a spot today by e-mailing liz@hhhusa.org.

“My biggest goal is to simplify riding and get people to think calmly and methodically,” Wylde described. “I also like to humanize myself and get my students to feel comfortable in having a conversation about riding. Adapting to each horse is the most important part of the clinic. Every horse is different and needs to be addressed as such. A clever horseman is capable of reading a horse, and helping the student understand how to work and relate to their partner.”

There are more than 28 million children of alcoholics living among us, but HHH is the first non-profit of its kind, helping to ease the pain of kids growing up in a home with substance abuse. These gentle giants help them understand life, themselves and how to cope with their parent’s addiction to substance abuse.

Wylde continued, “In the short time period of a clinic I think it’s important to simplify. The flat work is simple and not gimmicky. Depending on the level of the group, there will be jumping exercises related to and directed towards riding a course.”

Wylde first made his national mark in the equestrian world when he was 17 years old. He rode to the United States’ highest junior honor when he captured the Rolex-Maclay National Equitation Championship at the National Horse Show in Madison Square Garden. His nationally acclaimed win was only the beginning to a long list of accolades ahead.

Since then, he has won some of the most prestigious titles in the world of show jumping including the President’s Cup at the Washington International Horse Show, the $100,000 Rolex/USET Show Jumping Championship at the Bayer/USET Festival of Champions, the $50,000 FedEx Gold Coast Grand Prix and a Grand Prix at the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian.

During the 1990s he was chosen to represent the United States in World Cup competition and at the Pan American Games, where he won both team and individual silver medals in 1999. That year he was named the United States Olympic Committee’s Male Equestrian of the Year.

In 2002, Wylde and Fein Cera represented the United States at the World Equestrian Games in Jerez, Spain, where they won the individual bronze medal and Fein Cera earned the coveted “Best Horse” honor. In 2004, the pair was again chosen to represent the United States at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, where they won the team gold.

Wylde is the Head Clinician and Vice President of the United States Hunter Jumper Associations’ Emerging Athletes Program, which seeks to identify and cultivate equestrian talent and reward horsemanship skills to aspiring young professionals.

Together with Eduard Mullenders, Wylde runs Mullenders & Wylde Horses LLC, a Millbrook, New York-based training operation for top level horses and riders with a concentration on providing the highest level of care and training for the horse.

“The EAP is an incredible program which brings some of the best trainers in our industry together with talented and inspired young riders. It also strives to enlighten young riders about the importance of horsemanship, with the hope that these kids will become better professionals in the future,” Wylde said. “Many of us feel that there needs to be more education in our country, teaching our future professionals all the different aspects of horse care, training and management. Programs like the EAP and HHH’s clinic series is a great way to educate and enlighten future horsemen and women. And holding a clinic to benefit such an admirable cause as HHH is a double win.”

“We are incredibly fortunate to have someone of Peter’s caliber donating his time and talent to benefit our cause,” shared HHH Founder Liz Olszewski. “He does a lot for the youth in our equestrian community, and this is one more example. He’s a true leader in his sport.”

Horses Healing Hearts Adds Equine Assisted Learning to Program through EAGALA Certification

Wellington, FL – December 2, 2013 – Horses Healing Hearts (HHH) is proud to announce their membership in the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning (EAGALA) Program. Since 1999, EAGALA has been the leading international nonprofit association for professionals using equine therapy to address mental health and human development needs. Following their model and training, founder of HHH Lizabeth Olszewski is now certified in the EAGALA model, opening up new doors and limitless possibilities for the expanding nonprofit organization.

Horses Healing Hearts, founded in September 2009 by Olszewski of Wellington, FL, helps ease the pain of kids growing up in a home affected by substance abuse. HHH provides these children with the opportunity to help heal emotionally by working with horses while having fun and learning positive life-coping skills, responsibility and confidence. After completing the EAGALA certification, HHH will now be able to start a revenue arm for their program, which will assist in funding their mission to help children through equine experiential learning.

The EAGALA Model is based on a team approach in which an Equine Specialist and Mental Health professional work through the horses to help the client. There is no horseback riding involved, only unmounted activities in which the horses sometimes serve as a metaphor and a mirror for the participants themselves or situations in their lives. Each client has the best solutions for themselves when given the opportunity to discover them. Because EAGALA is an experiential model, participants will have the chance to problem-solve, take risks, employ creativity and find the solutions that best work for them.

Founder Liz Olszewski shared, “Dr. Patricia O’Gorman, HHH Advisory Committee Chair, suggested that we start researching associations in which to be certified in order to increase our skill level and credibility. We chose EAGALA due to its worldwide presence and balanced, professional model for which it is known. Because it is a model with unmounted activities, we can use it interspersed with our HHH children’s program (which is mounted), but it will be the ‘backbone’ of the EAP/EAL services we offer in the mission-based program coming soon.”

The EAGALA certification opens up a new division for HHH, which will now have the ability to help adult clients from substance abuse treatment centers. HHH will utilize Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) to reach out to a variety of clients for fee-based services which will, in turn, help fund the HHH children’s program.

EAL can be used for individuals and groups and is often used to evaluate group dynamics via team building exercises with executive corporate teams. “I was very impressed to hear that in Mexico City, Annie Ricalde (EAGALA Latin America Coordinator) and Ana Maria de Jager (Medical Doctor and Equine Specialist) not only use EAL to help ‘at-risk’ street kids but also have used the model to train executives from Wal-Mart, Chrysler, Shell, American Express, Danone, Revlon, SAMS, etc.” Olszewski said. “The fact that Fortune 500 companies are realizing the benefits of EAL with their team-building efforts speaks volumes.”

EAGALA is often called “a ropes course with horses” and is experiential in nature. The process acts as a powerful and effective therapeutic approach for people of all demographics. The possibilities with the EAGALA Model are endless, and with over 4,000 members in 49 countries, it is no wonder that the nonprofit organization has become so well known for its ability to help those suffering from addiction, depression and trauma.
