Gulf Coast Winter Classics Named World Championship Hunter Rider Event

Gulfport, MS – December 9, 2013 – This winter, hunter riders will have their first opportunity to vie for prestigious World Championship Hunter Rider (WCHR) points along the picturesque Mississippi Gulf Coast. For the first time since its inception, the Gulf Coast Winter Classics, a United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) Member’s Choice award-winning show, has been chosen as a distinguished WCHR host event.

The WCHR week will be held during the Gulf Coast Sunshine Classic week of March 5-9, 2014 during the Gulf Coast Winter Classics series at the beautiful Harrison County Fairgrounds and Equestrian Center.

A limited number of horse shows are chosen each year by USHJA for the distinction of being a WCHR event host. Events are selected on an annual basis based on the evaluation of a submitted application, votes from WCHR members and selection criteria including exhibitor hospitality, event scheduling, awards presentations and the quality of the footing, courses, stabling, staff and more.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to have been chosen as a WCHR event host this year,” said Bob Bell, President of the Gulf Coast Winter Classics. “I think we have a great horse show and setting for it, and it’s a great program, one that we’re honored to get to be a part of.”

The USHJA World Championship Hunter Rider Program was founded in 1995 to recognize and celebrate the hunter rider. Since the inaugural WCHR Professional Finals in 1995, the WCHR program has expanded to include coveted year-end awards for professionals, developing professionals, amateur-owners, adult amateurs, juniors, and children and pony riders. WCHR program members qualify for national and regional awards by earning points at member events held across the country throughout the qualifying year.

In conjunction with the WCHR member event, the Gulf Coast Sunshine Classic will offer a $1,000 Pre-Green Incentive class, a $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby and a $3,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby. The Gulf Coast Winter Classics will also offer $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derbies during weeks two, three and four of the circuit, which runs February 5 – March 16, 2014.

The Gulf Coast Classic series offers competition for every level of horse and rider, from lead line through grand prix. Reserve your stalls today. Come for the show and stay for the fun.

Pensacola Prelude – Three Weeks of AA Shows as a Prelude to the Gulf Coast Winter Classic Circuit

As the cold winter weather settles in, it’s time to set your sights on warmer climates, beaches and… horse shows!  That’s right; the Gulf Coast Classic Company is ready to welcome you to their AA winter show series that kicks off January 8 in Pensacola, Florida for three weeks followed by the Mississippi Gulf Coast Winter Classics starting February 5 along the scenic Mississippi Gulf Coast in Gulfport, Mississippi!

Week 1 gets the competition heated up with a $10,000 Open Jumper Class on Saturday night and then it’s a $25,000 Grand Prix weeks 2 and 3.  “We always run our grand prix on Saturdays so our customers don’t feel rushed to catch a flight if they are heading home Sunday night,” commented Bob Bell, President of Classic Company.  “And the entire city of Pensacola comes out to watch the jumpers on Saturday night. It’s really fun and the stands are packed with people,” he added.

Genie Harper of Oak Haven Farm in Folsom, Louisiana said, “We’re looking forward to showing in Pensacola this year.  Last year was our first year there.  We went weeks 2 and 3 because it set us up nicely for the Gulfport shows,” she said.  “Our clients really liked it.  The shows are AA and our people did really well and collected a lot of points,” she added.  “We usually bring between 5 to 10 horses and mostly adult amateurs.”

The USHJA National Hunter Derby will be offered weeks 2 and 3.  A comprehensive list of classes will be offered each show week ranging from the Child/Adult Jumpers, Jr./Amateur Owner Jumpers to Open Hunters to the Walk Trot Division. With plenty of jumper prize money each week, the Pensacola shows are really the best place to earn some cash and mileage for the more novice horses and riders.

Special performances always run before feature grand prix to the thrill of the crowd.
Special performances always run before feature grand prix to the thrill of the crowd.

“Bob’s shows really work with my program.  Our farm, Oak Haven Farm, is very hands on. We have a customized program and I have a good rapport and relationship with my clients and their horses.  That special attention to detail that Oak Haven offers is what Bob’s shows offer us, and that is totally in line with the way I do business too,” she said.

“I like the show grounds a lot and so do my customers.  The rings are convenient to the barns, and the stalls are very roomy.  There’s even a covered walkway for those stabling in the exterior stalls. The courses are always good and the footing is dependable,” she said.  “There is so much to do in the area and the show grounds are close to the interstate.  The hotels are easy to get to, there’s great shopping and dining convenient to the show grounds and its really a win-win for all of us.”

Are you bringing your family or your friends with you to the show?  The town of Pensacola has a lot to offer. Chartered fishing expeditions, sailing, diving, snorkeling, kayaking, dining and shopping are only some of the many things to do besides riding your horses!  The show is no more than 25 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from the Gulf of Mexico.  Exhibitors and their families love the show’s convenience to the airport and the town of Pensacola, right on the Gulf.

When looking to book your accommodations for the Pensacola shows, please book with the Official Gulf Coast Classic Company lodging partners!  The Best Western Plus Blue Angel Inn is very convenient and offers horse show friendly accommodations and rates.  The Official Pet Friendly hotel is the Red Roof Inn Pensacola West and both are just minutes from the Escambia Equestrian Center, beach, airport and quaint Gulf side restaurants and shops. Gulfport, MS – November 25, 2013 – From February 5 to March 16, 2014 the Gulf Coast Winter Classics provides riders with top competition and prize money, a beautiful venue, southern hospitality and an impressive line-up of judges. Among that judges line-up for 2014 are skilled hunter judges Sue Ashe, Thom Brede, Jim Clapperton, Leo Conroy, Joe Darby, Scott Evans, Rob Bielefeld, Tucker Erickson, Scott Fitton, Scott Hoffstetter, Jimmy Lee, Brian Lenehan, Kevin Lenehan, Alan Lohman, Betsy Perry, Tony Sgarlata, William Sparks, Skip Thornbury, Steve Walls, Kim Williams, Scott Williamson and Chris Wynne.

Over the course of the six weeks of competition at the Harrison County Fairgrounds and Equestrian Center, the Gulf Coast Winter Classics will give away more than $1,000,000 in prize money throughout a wide range of classes including a weekly grand prix and a weekly USHJA National or International Hunter Derby.

Judges presiding over the first week of competition, February 5-9, 2014, include Sue Ashe, Skip Thornbury and Chris Wynne.

Successful as rider, trainer and judge, Ashe has judged at top shows all across the country, and she has been a judge of the Gulf Coast Winter Classics since the circuit’s inception. Ashe looks forward to returning to Gulfport, MS again this year.

“The show staff has done such a good job promoting and improving everything,” Ashe said. “They’ve got great footing; the staff is great. It’s just a nice place to work and nice people to work for.”

Taking to the judges’ stand during week two, running February 12-16, 2014, are Thom Brede, Jimmy Lee, Kevin Lenehan and Tony Sgarlata. Alan Lohman, William Sparks, Steve Walls and Kim Williams will preside as the judges during week three, to be held February 19-23, 2014.

Heading into the second half of the circuit, Joe Darby, Scott Fitton, Scott Hoffstetter and Scott Williamson will judge the fourth week of hunter competition, February 26 – March 2, 2014. From March 5-9, 2014, the week five judges will include Rob Bielefeld, Jim Clapperton, Leo Conroy and Brian Lenehan.

Conroy, Lenehan and all of the Gulf Coast Classics judges have judged extensively throughout the nation. For Conroy, that includes having judged such prestigious events as the Pennsylvania National Horse Show, the Washington International Horse Show, the Hampton Classic and more, but he looks forward to judging the Gulf Coast Classics this year.

“I go to quite a few horse shows in a year, so to have one stand out is a rarity, but I was so impressed,” Conroy said of his first time judging the Gulf Coast Classics last year. “The facility is great; the grand prix ring is beautiful, and there are plenty of places to ride.”

Brian Lenehan has been a part of judging at the Gulf Coast Classics since the show’s inception, and he has watched it continually grow into the impressive horse show that it is today.

“Over the years, the thing that impressed me the most was not only the time and the money that they put into it, but with this show, they’ve built up the whole equestrian business in that south central part of the country,” Lenehan said. “Bob Bell has done a really great job with it.”

Rounding out the judges panel during the sixth and final week of the top AA-rated show circuit are judges Scott Evans, Tucker Erickson, Scott Fitton and Betsy Perry.
