Special Ceremony Honoring Therapy Horse Magic

Sheriff Sadie Darnell will hold a special recognition ceremony on Wednesday, April 29th, 2015, at 1 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters located at 2621 SE Hawthorne Road, Gainesville. The ceremony will be to honor therapy horse Magic from the Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses. Magic will be “taking the oath” before leaving to represent the Alachua County Sheriff’s Office and all of Alachua County while attending the 34th Annual National Police Officers’ Memorial Week in Washington, D.C. in May 2015.

Magic has been scheduled to make dozens of private and group visits with children whose parent or other family members were killed in the line of duty. She will be with families for engraving of names on the Memorial Wall, attend the Honor Guard Competition and ride the subway to Washington, D.C. landmarks with children. She will even do good night “tuck ins” with children at hotels, leaving stuffed toy horses on each bed. While in Washington, D.C., Magic will also visit a children’s hospital and a veterans’ hospital.

Magic has worked with first responders across the country for many years. From the school children and first responders of Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT to the tornado survivors of Moore, OK, she brings her special love where it is needed most. She has worked with law enforcement community outreach programs and visited injured members of law enforcement and their families in hospitals across the country.

Magic received a national honor last month with her induction into the United States Equestrian Federation Horse Stars Hall of Fame. She was honored as a humanitarian for “having a life changing and inspirational impact on the public.”

When Magic is not traveling, she has a one-of-a-kind partnership with the University of Florida Health Shands Rehab Hospital in Gainesville, an acute hospital for patients who have suffered strokes, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations and burns. Magic works with occupational, speech and physical therapists as part of the treatment team.

She has inspired patients in the therapy gym to reach out their arms for the first time and helped patients who are learning how to use adaptive equipment like walkers and wheelchairs. She even demonstrates rehab training stairs and ramps. Magic has inspired patients who have stood or walked for the very first time since their accidents or surgeries.

Please join us in deputizing Magic as she begins the journey to honor individuals who have been injured or killed in service to the public.

Gainesville, FL (February 22, 2014) — Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses has received a national honor with the induction of therapy horse Magic into the United States Equestrian Federation and EQUUS Foundation Horse Stars Hall of Fame for 2015. Magic was inducted at the EQUUS Foundation’s Fete Coeval Etoile on Friday, February 20 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, Florida. The Horse Stars Hall of Fame was established by the USEF and EQUUS Foundation to celebrate the extraordinary talent of horses and their magical and powerful bond with people.

Magic was honored as a humanitarian for having a life changing and inspirational impact on the public. From helping children and first responders at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT to child trafficking victims in Washington, D.C. and tornado survivors in Moore, OK, Magic brings her special love where it is needed most. She visits children’s hospitals across the country.

When Magic is not traveling she has a one of a kind partnership with the University of Florida Health Shands Rehab Hospital in Gainesville, Florida, an acute hospital for patients who have suffered strokes, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, amputations and burns. She even demonstrates rehab training stairs and ramps. Magic has worked with patients who have stood or walked for the very first time since their accidents or surgeries. Therapists have seen exceptional progress and motivation with patients teamed with the little horse.

Magic2Working indoors would be a challenge for any horse but Magic makes it look easy. She walks up and down stairs, rides in elevators, walks on unusual floor surfaces, carefully moves around hospital equipment, works in small rooms and handles unexpected sounds like ambulances, alarms and hospital helicopters… and yes she is house trained. Every hospital is different and when Magic enters a new hospital she does not get a practice run. She must be comfortable walking through the door and crowds of people with her trainer no matter what new sights and sounds she encounters on the way.

The inductees were featured in a video and photo gallery accompanied by stories of their achievements.

Owners of the honored horses arrived from around the country. Therapy horse Magic attended the ceremony and met with fans and guests indoors during dinner and events. She also played with Harry de Leyer, owner and trainer of the famous Snowman (Eighty Dollar Champion: Snowman, the Horse Who Inspired a Nation) after the ceremony. Both Magic and Snowman were inducted into the Horse Stars Hall of Fame. “I will never forget you, Magic,” Mr. de Leyer told the little horse.

A Teacher’s Last Gift – Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses

Nadine Tull was a wonderful teacher. She loved her students and she loved horses.

Ms. Tull first met a team of Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses at a program in Ocala, Florida seven years ago and dreamed of someday bringing the tiny horses to her school. Two years ago Ms. Tull started writing and calling Gentle Carousel. She also attended Gentle Carousel’s Reading Is Magic library programs and talked to the volunteers about her dream.

As a teacher she was very touched that her favorite therapy horse Magic had comforted school children after the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut and after the tornadoes in Moore, Oklahoma.

This year her school, Dunnellon Elementary School, had a goal of earning 6,000 Accelerated Reader points by the middle of the year. The students were told that if they met their goal, Ms. Tull would ask the horses from Gentle Carousel to join them in a celebration. Ms. Tull gave each teacher in her school a fictional book about horses to read to their students. She put up posters of Gentle Carousel horses on the school cafeteria walls and in her classroom. A fellow teacher even wrote a song called “Welcome to the Magical Land of Reading” and it was made into a DVD to send to Gentle Carousel with the invitation.

Blaze300fFBThe school’s media specialist decorated the library in an equine theme, including a display with saddle, bridle, toy horses and posters of Gentle Carousel horses. Each week, the school principal announced how many AR points the school had earned. By January 15, 2014, the students had earned 10,000 points – far surpassing their goal.

Because of the students’ hard work and Ms. Tull’s persistence, Gentle Carousel agreed to bring their reading program and horses to the school. The students continued reading and earned 17,000 AR points, more than they ever had ever earned before. They even set a goal to reach an amazing 20,000 points by the end of the school year.

The week finally came that the horses were going to visit Ms. Tull’s school. Ms. Tull called Gentle Carousel to say how excited she was that the plans had all worked out and the students would finally meet the horses she had loved for so long. She was especially happy that her favorite horse Magic was going to visit her classroom after the reading program to work on a project with her students. Ms. Tull had spent time with Magic just the week before at a library program.

But to the surprise of the school staff, Ms. Tull, who lived alone, did not come to school or call the Monday before the horses were to arrive. It was something she would never do. Her principal and two teachers went to her home to check on her. They found that Ms. Tull had passed away while she was sleeping.

Blaze300aFBGentle Carousel’s Reading Is Magic program came to the school yesterday to honor Ms. Tull. Therapy horse Magic’s job changed and she was now there to comfort the students after the loss of a much loved teacher. She met each student in the school and then visited Ms. Tull’s classroom to spend more time with her students.

Ms. Tull did not see her dream take place but her final act as a teacher was to arrange the love of a therapy horse to be with her students when they needed it the most. The students lost their teacher but the great lessons she taught them will always be part of their lives.

“The children have fallen in love with reading this year and I know it is because they want to see the beautiful miniature horses of Gentle Carousel. Thank you for making our dream come true.” – Ms. Tull (from a note she wrote two days before she passed away)

Helping Hooves Headed to Newtown, CT

Along with many from around the world, we mourn with the families of Newtown, CT in the wake of the horrific tragedy which took the lives of so many, most of whom were 6 and 7 year old children.  As we tried to think of ways in which we might help, we learned that Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses (a local non-profit charity) had been contacted to bring their team of miniature horses to work with the families who have been devastated by this unimaginable tragedy.  As you may realize, this is an expensive undertaking.  If you, too, are looking for a way to help, please consider supporting Gentle Carousel as they head out to aid this small, tight-knit community in dealing with the loss of so many.  Clicking here will take you to their PayPal donation page.  We would appreciate it if you could forward to your friends, family, and co-workers as they may be looking for ways to help as well.

The following information has been provided by Gentle Carousel about their mission and this trip.

Boy and Horse Inspire People around the World

Miniature therapy horses Mozart and Cloudburst went to visit a young man named Joseph with Pompe disease who was in the hospital participating in a painful clinical trial.  The trial could one day help young children. Joseph had dreamed of meeting a real horse but had never seen one in person before that day.  When Mozart saw Joseph he walked over on his own and gently put his head in the young man’s lap.  They stayed there together and after a few minutes Mozart just closed his eyes, ignoring everything going on around them.  He refused to move away from Joseph, something he had never done before, except to walk along with him next to the wheelchair.  He stayed with his head resting in Joseph’s lap for over a half hour until it was time for the young man to return to his room.

Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses Thank You

We had our horses and Reading Is Magic program at the Keystone Heights library in Florida this year.  So many people came that I don’t think they could have put another person inside.  Everyone was so nice (especially Ms. Whipple the librarian) and they actually moved most of the furniture out on the lawn to fit everyone inside for the program.

Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses visited over 18,000 adults and children in hospitals care, hospice programs, assisted living programs and libraries in 2011.

We hope you have a great New Year!

Holiday News for Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses

Every child wants a pony for Christmas.

When a real horse walks into the hospital room or bedroom of a sick child it is always magical experience but during the holidays it is even more special. Therapy horses Peanut and Cloudburst dressed as Santa and Mrs. Claus are visiting children inside hospitals and in hospice care from now until Christmas. They will be joined by other tiny therapy horses (only 19-24 inches tall) dressed as elves and nutcracker horses. Each horse has an iPod so holiday music follows them from room to room.

Known as “The Santa Ponies”, they will also work with sheriff’s officers reaching out to children in a high crime neighborhoods, visit children spending the holidays in homeless shelters, help with a food drive in a shopping mall and perform on stage at a concert to benefit children with cancer.

Florida Horse Wins Martha Stewart’s Annual Halloween Photo Contest

Aladdin and Peanut

Some exciting news at Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses.

Therapy horse Cloudburst (wearing his scarecrow costume and really carrying his basket) won Martha Stewart’s 2011 Halloween Photo Contest.  The photo was selected from over 500 national finalists.  We thought it was interesting last week that Martha Stewart was on Twitter talking about our therapy horses and posted our website information… now we know why.  Thank you Martha!

Cloudburst and his therapy horses’ friends have spent October doing hospital and hospice “Trick or Treating” in their Halloween costumes.  Being recognized by Martha Stewart was encouraging for our costume designer who makes and donates all of the costumes our horses use all year.  She is currently working on ‘50s sock hop outfits for our horses (with leather jackets and poodle skirts) for an upcoming dance marathon to benefit The Children’s Miracle Network.

Florida Horse in National Celebrity Magazine

She may not be Angelina Jolie or Jennifer Aniston, but Florida miniature therapy horse Magic is currently in national celeb magazine In Touch Weekly (at most department store and grocery store check outs around the country). Take a peek while you are waiting in line!

Magic’s little friend Peanut is giving her a run for her money when it comes to international news.  She was just featured in UK’s The Daily Mail and The Telegraph and also managed to be in the news in China and Iraq last week. Peanut’s real job as a therapy horse was highlighted when she helped cheer children with life threatening illnesses as Ronald McDonald’s look-a-like sidekick.  She arrived with Ronald in his “one horsepower” car at a special Ronald McDonald House Charities event.  She also teamed with 12 year veteran NFL football player Mike Peterson (UF Hall of Famer, currently with the Atlanta Falcons) for a children’s charity program.  Peanut was dressed as a UF cheerleader and her therapy horse friends were football players and a referee.

Next stop for Peanut: a project with Disney to help terminally ill children.
