US Finishes Seventh at 2013 FEI Pony World Driving Championships

Pau, France – The 2013 FEI Pony World Driving Championships came to a conclusion Sunday with the cones phase and saw the United States secure a seventh place finish on a total of 452.1. The Netherlands capped off a banner weekend earning Team Gold on a score of 332.3, with Germany claiming Silver on 365.9, and Hungary cruised to a Bronze medal on a score of 388.3.

In the Single Pony Championship, Tracey Morgan (Beallsville, Md.) led the way for the U.S. finishing in 13th on a total of 132.95. On Sunday, the 2013 National Champion and her own Fuego 88 added 9.57 penalties to their score in the cones. Paul Maye (Fairfield, Va.) and Harmony Sporthorses’ Markus also represented the U.S. in the Single division. The pair leaves France with a 17th place finish to their name after adding 4.80 penalties to their score in the cones to finish the weekend on an overall total of 140.27.

Hungary’s Martin Holle earned the Gold medal in the Single Championship finishing on a score of 110.73, Great Britain’s Rosann Walters-Symons claimed Silver on a score of 118.15, with Els Broekman of The Netherlands securing Bronze with a score of 118.43.

Wendy O’Brien (Aiken, S.C.) was the sole U.S. finisher in the Pair Pony Championship finishing in 13th place with an overall total of 159.47. The 2012 National Champion and her own pair of ponies added 7.49 penalties in the cones on Sunday.

Ewoud Boom of The Netherlands claimed the Individual Gold medal on a score of 107.18, with Germany’s Marco Freund earning Silver with a total of 116.59 and Great Britain’s Anna Grayston finishing in Bronze medal position on 130.72.

In the Pony Team Championship the U.S. secured two top 10 finishes with Lisa Stroud finishing eighth and Katie Whaley driving to 10th place. Stroud (West Grove, Pa.) and her team added 8.27 penalties to their score to finish on 159.64. Whaley (Paris, Ky.) finished on an overall total of 165.01 with Mia Allo’s team after adding 7.85 penalties to their score in the cones.

Bram Chardon of The Netherlands claimed Individual Gold with a score of 106.71, with Jozsef Dobrovitz of Hungary capturing Silver on a total of 121.47, and Germany’s Tobias Bucker earning Bronze with 125.81.

US Stands in Seventh Following the Marathon at the 2013 FEI Pony World Driving Championships

Pau, France – The United States sent six drivers onto the marathon on Saturday at the 2013 FEI Pony World Driving Championships and finished the day in seventh place on a total of 426.7. The Netherlands leads the field on a score of 326.2, with Germany currently in Silver medal position on 351.9, and Hungary occupies third place with a total of 370.9.

In the Single Pony Championship, the U.S. was represented by Tracey Morgan and Paul Maye. Morgan (Beallsville, Md.) drove her own Fuego 88 to 17th place on the marathon with a score of 74.61. The 2013 National Champion heads into the cones on Sunday in ninth place on a two-phase total of 123.38. Maye (Fairfield, Va.) and Harmony Sporthorses’ Markus stand on an overall total of 135.47 in 20th place after finishing the marathon in 21st place and adding 76.08 to their score on Sunday.

Sebastien Pallen of Belgium was the winner of the marathon in the Singles division on a score of 64.85. Hungary’s Martin Holle leads the championship on a score of 110.46 closely followed by Els Broekman of The Netherlands on 112.32 and Great Britain’s Rosann Walters-Symons on 113.82.

In the Pair Pony Championship, U.S. drivers Wendy O’Brien and Jennifer Matheson did not have the days they hoped for after incurring trouble on the marathons. O’Brien (Aiken, S.C.) and her own pony pair added 97.84 penalties to their overall score after finishing 21st on the marathon. She will head into the cones in 19th place on a score of 151.98. Matheson (Aiken, S.C.) and Katrina Becker’s ponies had difficulty early in the course and retired in the second hazard.

Hungary’s Kristof Osztertag was the winner of the marathon in the Pair Championship with a score of 68.43. Ewoud Boom of The Netherlands holds to the lead after the marathon on a score of 107.18, with Germany’s Marco Freund second on 112.50 and Great Britain’s Anna Grayston stands third on 119.26.

Lisa Stroud and Katie Whaley produced top-12 results for the U.S. on the marathon in the Pony Team Championship. Stroud (West Grove, Pa.) added 93.64 to her overall total after placing 11th on the marathon. The nine-time National Champion heads into the cones on a score of 151.37 in 10th place. Whaley (Paris, Ky.) and Mia Allo’s team finished the marathon in 12th place on a score of 93.93 and stands on an overall total of 157.16 in 12th place.

Bram Chardon of The Netherlands won the marathon on a score of 72.60 in the Pony Team Championship. Chardon also leads the field on a total of 106.71, fellow Dutchman Jan De Boer is second on 120.39 and Hungary’s Jozsef Dobrovitz Jr. is third with a score of 121.47.

US Stands Sixth after Dressage at 2013 FEI Pony World Driving Championships

Pau, France – At the conclusion of the first phase of the 2013 FEI Pony World Driving Championships, the United States stands in sixth place on a total of 158.60. On Friday, the Single Pony competitors went to task before the Ground Jury of Klaus Christ, Anne-Marie Turbe, Diana Brownlie, and Dot Wilcoxson. On the second day of the driven dressage the United Sates was represented by Tracey Morgan and Paul Maye.

Morgan (Beallsville, Md.) drove her own Fuego 88 to a top-10 placing in the Single Pony Championship on a score of 48.77.The 2013 USEF National Combined Driving Single Pony Champion looks to climb the leaderboard on Saturday’s marathon when she sets off in eighth place.

Maye (Fairfield, Va.) and Harmony Sporthorses’ Markus earned a score of 59.39 and will head onto the marathon in 19th place.

Els Broekman of The Netherlands leads the Single Pony Championship on a score of 36.67, Hungary’s Martin Holle stands second on a score of 43.01, while Germany’s Jacqueline Walter is third on a score of 43.20.

In the Team standings, The Netherlands heads onto the marathon as the early leaders on a score of 107.26, Germany stands second on a score of 122.31 and Hungary lies third on a score of 152.39.

US Pony Drivers Land in Top 12 after First Day of 2013 FEI Pony World Driving Championships

Pau, France – The 2013 FEI Pony World Driving Championships kicked off Thursday with the first of two days of driven dressage. Pair Pony and Pony Team drivers took their first steps toward world titles as they performed their tests in front of the Ground Jury composed of Klaus Christ, Anne-Marie Turbe, Diana Brownlie, and Dot Wilcoxson. U.S. competitors got off to a strong start with all four drivers cruising into the top 12 in their respective championships.

Pair Pony Championship

Leading off the U.S. effort on Thursday was Jennifer Matheson (Aiken, S.C.) and her mother-in-law Katrina Becker’s talented pair as the first American competitors into the arena. The reigning USEF National Combined Driving Pair Pony Champion drove to a score of 52.10 to stand sixth in the Pair Pony Championship after the first phase.

Right behind Matheson in seventh place is U.S. teammate Wendy O’Brien (Aiken, S.C.) on a score of 54.14. The 2012 National Champion once again drove her own talented ponies to lay within striking distance of the leaders when everyone heads onto the marathon on Saturday.

Ewoud Boom of the Netherlands leads the Pair Championship after the driven dressage with a score of 36.48. Standing in second place is Germany’s Dieter Baackmann on 37.70 and Marco Fruend of Germany holds third place on a 42.24.

Pony Team Championship

Nine-time National Champion, Lisa Stroud (West Grove, Pa.) drove her trademark team of white ponies to a score of 57.73 as the first U.S. driver into the arena during the afternoon session. Stroud, who is looking to secure her third World Championship Team medal this weekend, will head out onto the marathon in eighth place.

Katie Whaley (Paris, Ky.) was the final U.S. competitor of the day, driving into 11th place in the Pony Team Championship with Mia Allo’s team on a score of 60.5. The 2003 and 2005 World Championship veteran will look to showcase the strong form that has propelled her and Allo’s ponies to top finishes in Europe over the summer.

The Netherlands holds the top two places after the dressage with Bram Chardon leading on 34.11 and Jan De Boer sitting in second on a score of 37.31. Tobias Bucker of Germany stands third with a score of 41.41.

Driven dressage comes to a conclusion on Friday with the Single Pony Championship, where the U.S. will be represented by Tracey Morgan at 10:45am local time and Paul Maye at 2:50pm local time.

USEF Names Team for 2013 FEI Pony World Driving Championships

Lexington, KY – The following pony-and-driver combinations have been named by the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) to represent the U.S. at the 2013 FEI Pony World Driving Championships in Pau, France, October 31 – November 3.

Single Pony

The following two combinations will represent the U.S. in the Single Pony division:

Paul Maye (Fairfield, Va.) will drive Harmony Sporthorses’ Markus.
Markus is a 2001 American Sport Pony stallion.

Tracey Morgan (Beallsville, Md.) will drive her own Fuego 88.
Fuego 88 is 2001 German Riding Pony gelding.

Pair Pony

The following two combinations will represent the U.S. in the Pair Pony division:

Jennifer Matheson (Aiken, S.C.) will drive Katrina Becker’s Bax 3, Cees, and Danyloo.
Bax 3 is a 2002 German Riding Pony gelding.
Cees is a 2002 Welsh Pony gelding.
Danyloo is a 1997 German Sport Pony stallion.

Wendy O’Brien (Aiken, S.C.) will drive her own Braakmoor Clowny Clark, Braakmoor Conan, and Olivin Diavolo.
Braakmoor Clowny Clark is a 1998 Welsh Pony gelding.
Braakmoor Conan is a 1999 Welsh gelding.
Olivin Diavolo is a 2001 Welsh Cob gelding.

Pony Team

The following two combinations will represent the U.S. in the Pony Team division:

Lisa Stroud (West Grove, Pa.) will drive her own Kilkerin Edward, Cong Donal, Mosby, Sir Patrick, Mystic, and With Flair.
Kilkerin Edward is 1997 Connemara Pony gelding.
Cong Donal is a 1996 Connemara gelding.
Mosby is a 1996 Quarter Horse cross gelding.
Sir Patrick is 1999 Connemara Pony gelding.
Mystic is a 2000 New Forest Pony gelding.
With Flair is a 1999 Welsh Pony gelding.

Katie Whaley (Paris, Ky.) will drive Mia Allo’s Ronja 436, Duke 76, Galileo, Thibo, Timing, and Timesquare W E.
Ronja 436 is a 1994 mare of unknown breeding.
Duke 76 is a 1992 Wurttemberg gelding.
Galileo is a 2004 German Sport Pony gelding.
Thibo is a 2001 Welsh Pony gelding.
Timing is a 2003 Welsh Pony gelding.
Timesquare W E is 2005 Hanoverian gelding.

Ed Young will serve as Chef d’Equipe.
