Deusser Is Dynamite with Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z in $214,000 Grand Prix CSIO4*

Wellington, FL – March 7, 2021 – Success at the 2021 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) continued for Daniel Deusser (GER) as he and Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z, owned by Stephex and Scuderia 1918, put forth a brilliant double-clear effort to be crowned champion of the $214,000 Grand Prix CSIO4*, presented by JTWG, Inc. on Sunday, March 7, in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC).

A total of 50 entries including six of the top 12 riders in the world, challenged the opening round track set by Steve Stephens (USA) and Nick Granat (USA), with eight pairs qualifying to return for the jump-off. Sixth to contest the subsequent round, Deusser and the 13-year-old Zangersheide stallion by Tangelo Vd Zuuthoeve x Mr Blue executed the track flawlessly, shaving nearly a second off the leading time to finish in 36.45 seconds.

Mimi Gochman and Celina BH Dominate the Hermès Under 25 Semi-Final Grand Prix

The $37,000 Hermès Under 25 Semi-Final Grand Prix took place in the International Arena on Sunday morning after being postponed from Saturday night due to weather. Forty-six competitors entered the class and eight made it to the jump-off, but Mimi Gochman and Gochman Sport Horses LLC’s Celina BH proved unbeatable.

Riders were tested over a technical first course of 13 fences, including an open water jump, designed by Nick Granat (USA) and Steve Stephens (USA). Gochman, of New York, NY, and Celina BH were twenty-seventh in the order of go and produced the eighth and final jump-off qualifying round. The pair put in a second clear round in the jump-off with a winning time of 31.86 seconds.

“I thought my first round was very smooth, which was the goal,” explained Gochman. “Smooth, stay in the time, no big moves or changes, and I think the plan was to jump clear, obviously. I had a light rub at the second jump, and I think it made Celina and I both pick up a little bit on the rest of the round. She’s so confident at the water, which is really nice that I didn’t have to think about that. She’s so adjustable, so all lengthening and shortening stuff she can do so well.”

Deusser Delivers a Double in $37,000 Bainbridge Companies 1.45m Classic CSI5*

Wellington, FL – February 26, 2021 – Daniel Deusser (GER) delivered his second five-star win in two days on Friday, February 26, in the $37,000 Bainbridge Companies 1.45m Classic CSI5* with Kiana van het Herdershof, owned by Stephex Stables, at the 2021 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF).

There were 56 entries in the 1.45m speed class, jumping over a course designed by Anthony D’Ambrosio (USA) and Andy Christiansen. There were 21 clear rounds. Starting out the class as the first to go was McLain Ward (USA) on Catoki, a 12-year-old Holsteiner gelding by Catoki x Cartello B owned by Ward, Marilla van Beuren, and Bob Russell. They sped around clear in 59.44 seconds, which would hold up for second place.

Deusser and Kiana van het Herdershof went just two trips later, putting in a blazing fast time of 59.12 seconds that would hold up through the entire class for victory.

Speedy Finish for Charlie Jayne and Amice Z in $37,000 Griffis Residential 1.45m Qualifier CSI2*

Ten clear rounds went for speed out of the original 73 entries in the $37,000 Griffis Residential 1.45m Qualifier CSI2* in the International Arena. As each horse went in the ring, the leading time kept dropping, but it was Charlie Jayne (USA) and his own Amice Z who recorded the fastest clear round in the jump-off in 35.55 seconds.

“That was probably, I’m going to have to say, the fastest jump-off I’ve ever done with him,” revealed Jayne. “This being the two-star level and him doing bigger stuff lately, I felt confident that I could test it out today. I did the leave out one to two. The winner did eight [strides] on the rollback, and I challenged him there. I thought the one place I could do [faster] is if I could gallop over to the double [combination], and he came up waiting and tried his butt off for me there. After he tried so hard there, I did eight where some people did seven, and hoped for a better rollback and it worked out. I said, ‘Let’s do this’ to the last [jump], and he answered the call beautifully. He was right there for me.”

Second place went to Lacey Gilbertson (USA) and Viti de Longa, owned by Seahorse LLC. Gilbertson and the 12-year-old Selle Français mare by Contendro I x Galoubet A were close behind in 36.37 seconds.

Deusser Dominates $73,000 Adequan WEF Challenge Cup Round 7

Wellington, FL – February 25, 2021 – Daniel Deusser (GER) continued his winning ways at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), this time aboard Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z, owned by Stephex and Scuderia 1918, taking top spot in the $73,000 Adequan® WEF Challenge Cup Round 7 held in the International Arena on Thursday, February 25, at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC).

Deusser, who already has already picked up three wins during the 2021 WEF winter circuit including the CSI4* grand prix during WEF 4, piloted his veteran partner Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z, a 13-year-old Zangersheide stallion by Tangelo Vd Zuuthoeve x Mr Blue, to a double-clear finish. The pair executed the track with precision, leaving out a stride for an efficient turn between fences one and two, as well as one less stride down to the delicate Lugano Diamonds double combination, which proved to be a difficult test in the jump-off round. Deusser and ‘Tobi,’ who arrived in Wellington less than a week ago, stopped the clock in 39.15 seconds to take the victory by a margin of nearly one second.

Madison Olvert Claims Victory in the NHS/THIS Adult Medal

The first class to take place on Thursday morning in the Equine Tack and Nutritionals Ring 6 was the NHS/THIS Adult Medal with 15 competitors. After a first round course and flat phase, Madison Olvert and her own Green Book took home the blue ribbon for the medal.

Olvert, of North Grafton, MA, and her mount Green Book have proven to be a competitive pair in the adult equitation medals this season. The duo earned the top prize in the NHS/THIS Adult Medal last week and returned for a repeat victory.

February 14, 2021 – Wellington, FL – Daniel Deusser (GER) felt the need for speed once again aboard Kiana Van Het Herdershof, owned by Stephex Stables, picking up a win in the $73,000 CaptiveOne Advisors 1.50m Classic for his second victory of the week on Sunday, February 14, in the International Arena to close out week five at the 2021 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) in Wellington, FL.

A total of 52 entries stepped into the ring over the 1.50m track set by Kelvin Bywater (GBR) with 12 qualifying for the jump-off. The pace was set by Brazil’s Rodrigo Pessoa and Carlito’s Way, an 11-year-old Holsteiner gelding by Casall x Lordanos owned by Lisa O’Sullivan. The pair were first to return and the first to post a double clear effort, finishing in 40.75 seconds.

Deusser was next to return with the same horse he captured the $37,000 Bainbridge 1.45m Classic CSI5* with on Friday, and he was quick from start to finish once again. The dynamic duo crossed the finish line in an impressive 38.17 seconds, shaving more than two seconds off the leading time. And, his speedy time could not be beat, sending him right back onto the top of the podium.

Cian O’Connor and Careca LS Elite Capture the $50,000 Restylane Grand Prix CSI2*

It was the luck of the Irish on Sunday afternoon as Cian O’Connor piloted Careca LS Elite, owned by Ronnoco Jump Ltd, to a victory in the $50,000 Restylane Grand Prix CSI2*. The track set by Kelvin Bywater (GBR) narrowed the field from 44 to just seven combinations qualifying for the jump-off and the final class of WEF 5 proved to be another exciting one.

First to go in the starting order and first to return for the jump-off, O’Connor put forth a double clear effort aboard the 10-year-old SLS gelding by Carusso LS La Silla x Rebozo La Silla, to stop the clock in 45.65 seconds.

“He’s a very intelligent horse with a wonderful canter,” said O’Connor. “He has a super technique in front so you can really put him close to the jumps, and he has a great way of jumping. When he’s fresh he’s a little bit keen so he needs plenty of jumping, plenty of classes, and you can really feel there today in the jump-off he was really easy to ride. He can turn back short and he’s catty at the jumps, so it really makes my job easy to go fast on him.”

Deusser Does It Again in the $37k Bainbridge 1.45m Classic CSI5*

February 12, 2021 – Wellington, FL – Hot off his grand prix win on Sunday during the fourth week of the 2021 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF), Daniel Deusser (GER) jumped back into the winner’s circle in WEF 5, this time aboard Kiana Van Het Herdershof, owned by Stephex Stables, in the $37,000 Bainbridge 1.45m Classic CSI5* on Friday, February 12, in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC).

The speed track on Friday set by Kelvin Bywater (GBR) challenged a total of 49 combinations and featured 14 jumping efforts. Deusser and the 11-year-old BWP mare by Toulon x Starlight VD Hemelseschoot gave it a good run, finishing with the fastest time of the day in 59.54 seconds.

“I had two horses and with the first one, the goal was to get a good ribbon,” said Deusser. “Kiana Van Het Herdershof is naturally very fast and a little bit crazy. She’s already won a few classes like this one, so with her, it was our plan to try to win the class.”

Jim Ifko and Un Diamant Des Forets Fly High in the $37,000 Restylane 1.45m Qualifier CSI2*

On Friday afternoon, Jim Ifko (CAN) piloted Un Diamant Des Forets, owned by Eventyre Farms, to a fast and fault free jump-off round to capture the $37,000 Restylane 1.45m Qualifier CSI2*. Ifko and the 13-year-old Selle Français stallion by Diamant De Semilly x Grace Des Forets, flew across the finish line in 34.74 seconds.

“When you have that many [10] in the jump-off in a class like this, you know that you have to be fast if you want to have a chance,” said Ifko. “He’s so fantastic for the jump-off, especially when it comes to making shorter turns and being able to jump something on an angle. He’s so competitive that you can come in on an incredibly sharp angle, and he has no problem. He never doubts it or questions what you’re doing. The bigger the challenge, the better it is for him. We had a good plan and fortunately we were able to execute it and it turned out great.”

Ifko has been fortunate enough to have the ride on the stallion for seven years and knows him quite well.

Deusser and Killer Queen VDM Win $214k Marshall & Sterling/Great American Insurance Group CSI4*

February 7, 2021 – Wellington, FL – Daniel Deusser (GER) and Killer Queen VDM, owned by Stephex Stables, flew to the top spot in the $214,000 Marshall & Sterling/Great American Insurance Group Grand Prix CSI4* on the grass Derby Field at Equestrian Village on Sunday, February 7, to close out the Marshall & Sterling/Great American Insurance Group CSI4* week at the 2021 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF).

The test set by Anderson Lima (BRA) featured 16 jumping efforts with a shortened jump-off course boasting seven obstacles and included an exciting gallop home to the Marshall & Sterling/Great American Insurance Group oxer. Eight nations were represented in the dozen qualified to return for the featured class jump-off.

Deusser and Killer Queen VDM, an 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare by Eldorado Vd Zeshoek x Derly Chin De Muze, galloped swiftly across the track, leaving all the jumps in their cups. The pair stopped the clock in 39.98 seconds making them the only combination of the day to crack the 40-second mark.

“I’m very happy with Killer Queen today,” said Deusser. “She arrived two weeks ago. I took her to other places to work with her on the grass, and she took it very well this weekend. At the end she is just an unbelievable horse. She has all of the things that a good show jumper needs; she’s very scopey, she’s careful, she has a huge stride, and she can be fast easily.”

Karen Polle and Jet Run Fly High in the $50,000 Palm Beach Equine Clinic 1.45m Grand Prix CSI2*

Kicking off the day in fine form, Karen Polle (JPN) and her own 11-year-old gelding Jet Run captured the $50,000 Palm Beach Equine Clinic 1.45m Grand Prix CSI2* with a stellar double clear effort.

Anderson Lima’s (BRA) artistry was put to the test once again with 16 jumping efforts featured in the first round of competition. There were 45 combinations in the starting field with a total of 15 qualifying to jump off over a shortened track that offered opportunities for tight turns and spots for a big gallop across the stunning grass field. The fastest of the day was Polle riding Jet Run (Chacco-Blue x Peisha), finishing in 37.52 seconds.

“I thought the course was pretty challenging, and it was a fair test,” she said of the1.45m track. “I was a little bit surprised there were so many clear actually and a lot of fast riders in the jump-off, so I was definitely a bit nervous. My horse has a lot of ability, and he’s very experienced so even though we’re still a relatively new combination, I have a lot of faith in him, so I felt good going in. I stuck to my plan in the jump-off, but the last line ended up a lot shorter for me than I expected so I was lucky my horse was good there.”

Victory for Daniel Deusser at the Final Hubside Jumping Show

Even good things must come to an end. After eleven weeks of competition in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, the second season of international show jumping at the HUBSIDE JUMPING has drawn to a close. A season which was exceptional in every way and ended with the victory of Germany’s Daniel Deusser and Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z.

“I’m really delighted with this victory in the HUBSIDE JUMPING’s CSI 4* Grand Prix and in particular with my horse, Scuderia 1918 Tobago Z. He had to take some time out at the beginning of the year and started competing again mid-season in small classes and then took part in the HUBSIDE JUMPING’s CSI 5* show a few weeks ago. Indeed, he is recovering well and is getting better and better, to the extent that he was able to win the HUBSIDE JUMPING’s CSI 4* Grand Prix today! I’m really proud of him!  The year has been very different and extremely difficult for all the riders, but thanks to the HUBSIDE JUMPING, we were able to enjoy a wonderful summer season. I don’t that it’s being presumptuous to extend my warmest thanks on behalf of all the riders to Sadri Fegaier and to the whole HUBSIDE JUMPING organising team. Thank you for keeping our sport alive and we all hope that we will be back here again next year.”

Killer Queen Reigns Supreme for Deusser in Mechelen

Belgian-based German star, Daniel Deusser, stormed to victory with Killer Queen VDM at the ninth leg of the Longines FEI World Cup™ 2019/2020 Western European League at Mechelen in Belgium.

In a fascinating 12-horse second round, the 38-year-old rider who is currently third in the world rankings had to wait until the very end to take his chance. Switzerland’s Pius Schwizer was holding the lead with a run that had clearly not pushed his gelding, Cortney Cox, to the limit of speed when breaking the beam without lowering a pole in 44.02 seconds.

“It was a bit of a strange jump-off; there were plenty of good combinations that got through but then not so many clears, and to be honest I knew I had a chance of beating Pius’ time. In the end I had nothing to lose, so I didn’t think about the poles; my horse was feeling really good and I thought if I don’t fight today, then when should I try? – and it worked out great because she played along with me and she was brilliant!” Deusser said after pinning Schwizer into second and Belgium’s Wilm Vermeir into third.

Belgian course designer, Eddy Geysemans, set a first-round track that demanded cautious negotiation in the small Nekerhal arena. And when it came to the second-round race against the clock it was all about tight, balanced turns and the ride down to the final vertical.

Vermeir’s elegant IQ van het Steentje put on a jumping exhibition first time out and took the early lead with the first clear of the jump-off, but in the slow time of 45.16 seconds which left the door wide open. And when Germany’s Christian Kukuk also decided to go for safety rather than speed, stopping the clock in 48.45 with the 10-year-old Quintino, it was still all to play for.

Switzerland’s Schwizer set the new target at 44.02 seconds when fifth-last to go, but with three speed merchants following him it still looked like a wide-open race.

Italy’s Emanuele Gaudiano is always fast with the extraordinary Chalou, but their time of 41.05 wouldn’t be a winning one when they hit the vertical third fence. And when young Belgian hero, 24-year-old Jos Verlooy, who claimed team gold and individual bronze at this summer’s FEI European Championships in Rotterdam (NED), had two fences down, then only Deusser was left to challenge.

Setting off with determination from the start, he was confident that he could do it with his ever-improving mare. And Killer Queen lived up to her promise when cruising home clear in 41.37 seconds for a clear victory.

“She has done a few amazing things already and she’s still only nine years old! I have her for two years now; she won quite a few youngster classes including the best Young Horse in Aachen when she was eight. From year to year she steps up and gets better and better; I just need to improve her dressage some more because she has huge potential for the future – she’s a very exciting horse!” Deusser said.

He won the Mechelen leg of the Western European League qualifying series before, back in 2013 with his former great horse Cornet d’Amour who went on to win the 2014 series title. Deusser, a member of the silver-medal-winning German team in Rotterdam, is now going to try to qualify for the 2020 Longines Final in Las Vegas, USA next April.

He’s planning to take in the next three legs of the Western European League at Basel (SUI), Leipzig (GER), and Amsterdam (NED) which all take place in rapid succession in January. “Tobago is out with a little injury for a few weeks so maybe Killer Queen will go to Basel” he said.

This result was a special one for the man whose career highlights also include team bronze and individual ninth place at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and who finished just off the podium, in fourth place, at the 2019 Longines Final in Gothenburg (SWE).

His wife, Caroline, and the family are all involved in running the Mechelen event, which is staged in memory of her late father, Eric Wauters.

“And we live very close to the showgrounds, so a lot of our friends also come to the show expecting to see me win – in one way it’s a lot of pressure but in another way it’s also support from all my friends and the organisation as well. I’m really happy I could win here because I do it for them. I know how hard they work for this show, so the win is not just for myself, but for everyone!” — Daniel Deusser (GER)

Riders to Watch in Rolex Grand Prix at CHI Geneva

From 12-15 December 2019, show jumping fans will travel to Switzerland for what is widely regarded as the world’s greatest indoor competition, CHI Geneva. The event, which spans four days, marks the final Major of the year and will welcome the world’s best equestrian combinations. Each rider will compete in front of around 42,000 people at Palexpo, the biggest indoor jumping arena in the world, as they seek to gain show jumping’s highest honors.

Visitors attending the 2019 edition of CHI Geneva will witness world-class equestrian action at an event that has been voted the world’s best show jumping competition nine times. With several of the world’s most prolific horse-and-rider combinations set to compete, there will be numerous contenders vying to be crowned the next Rolex Grand Slam live contender, further adding to the hype of the highly anticipated event.

One of the favorites to claim this year’s title is legendary Swiss rider and World No. 1, Steve Guerdat. The Rolex Testimonee has built up a great run of form this season after winning the ‘Pan American’ Grand Prix presented by Rolex in Spruce Meadows this summer and finishing second in the 2019 Rolex Grand Prix at The Dutch Masters in March. Already a three-time winner of Rolex Grand Prix at CHI Geneva, Guerdat will be eager to impress once more in front of a vibrant home crowd.

American rider Kent Farrington sits just outside of the world’s top 10 but has already established himself as one of the best riders in the world after magnificently winning the 2019 Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen with his outstanding mare Gazelle. The Rolex Testimonee has been on fine form this season, making him a prime contender for the prestigious Rolex Grand Prix of Geneva title, which he previously claimed back in 2017.

Never far from success is Germany’s Daniel Deusser, who currently sits at third in the Jumping World Rankings. Given his recent form, including a second-place finish in the 2019 Rolex Grand Prix at CHIO Aachen back in July, Deusser is expected to be one of the top performers at this year’s event in Geneva.

Current World No. 2, Martin Fuchs, is another rider who will be looking to secure the Major win in his native Switzerland. The young rider has already achieved much success in his career, including a silver medal in the Individual Jumping at the 2018 FEI World Equestrian Games™, and is the current European Champion. Fuchs’ recent results have helped the 26-year-old establish himself as one of the world’s very best competitors, so there will be a high level of expectation for him to finish off the year with his first Rolex Grand Prix title.

A field of 40 combinations will battle it out in the hope of seizing the final Major victory of the year in the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping at CHI Geneva, which promises to be a weekend of enormous competition starting on December 12th.

Guerdat, Fuchs, Deusser Top Entry Lists as 7 of World’s Top 10 Head to Olympia

Seven of the world’s top ten show jumpers are set to compete at this year’s edition of Olympia, The London International Horse Show, taking place from 16-22 December 2019. The confirmed line-up will ensure a week of world-class competition, providing unmissable sport and entertainment to the 90,000 spectators due to attend.

World No. 1 Steve Guerdat will be returning to London, the scene of his 2012 Olympic individual gold medal, looking to ride out a spectacular season on a high. He will be joined by his Swiss compatriot, Martin Fuchs, the current World No. 2 and reigning individual European Champion.

Germany will also be sending a strong contingent, headed by World No. 3 Daniel Deusser, a recent winner at the CSI5* in Prague, alongside Christian Ahlmann, currently ranked ninth in the world and always a consistent performer at Olympia.  Adding to the German line-up is show jumping legend Marcus Ehning, who will be vying for a victory to round off a successful 2019 season.

From Belgium will be World No. 6 Pieter Devos, who is sure to mount a strong challenge following his recent victory in the FEI Jumping World Cup of Stuttgart. He will be joined by his 2019 European Championship gold medal winning teammate Jos Verlooy, along with Niels Bruynseels and Olivier Philippaerts. Flying the flag for the USA is FEI World Equestrians Games™ team gold medalist, Laura Kraut.

Following William Whitaker’s outstanding victory in last year’s Longines FEI Jumping World Cup at Olympia, British hopes will remain high for the 2019 Show, as a strong home contingent are set to take their place in the starting line-up.

Current World No. 4, Ben Maher, will be seeking to crown an exceptional year with success at Olympia, having already secured numerous 5* Grand Prix victories in 2019, as well as an individual silver medal at the FEI European Championships. Hot on his heels will be his London 2012 Olympic gold medal winning teammate Scott Brash, fresh from victory in the FEI Jumping World Cup in Verona in November.

Robert Whitaker, a winner at Olympia in 2018, is another to come to this year’s Show high in confidence following his FEI Jumping World Cup victory in Helsinki. He will be joined by Holly Smith, a member of the 2019 European Championship bronze medal winning team which secured Great Britain their ticket for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Guy Williams will be returning to Olympia looking to retain his Cayenne Puissance title, following a thrilling five-round contest in 2018 saw him finish equal first. Williams, notorious for his speed against the clock, will be sure to have the home crowd on their feet throughout the week, as he takes on old rivals William Funnell and Laura Renwick, both of whom are also renowned for their speed and agility.

Young riders Emily Moffitt, Amy Inglis, Harry Charles, and James Wilson round off the British contingent. All three come off the back of a strong 2019 season, which has included representing Great Britain at senior level in FEI Nations Cups throughout the season.
