Citrus Series Attracts International and Local Regulars

Annie McFee and Telux / Photos by Ann Glavan.

Trainers and Riders Get Hooked on the Convenience and Affordability

Wellington, FL – March 14, 2014 – Citrus Series Horse Shows at Jim Brandon Equestrian Center at Okeeheelee Park is establishing an ever-growing group of regular attendees. Comprised of both International and local riders and trainers, this new group of regulars agree that Citrus Series has built an ideal setting for professionals to bring their developing horses for an easy-going outing and for amateurs to gain confidence over both hunter and jumper courses.

The first of two March Tuesday afternoon shows was held on March 11 and was attended by horses and riders from a wide range of levels and abilities, all who benefited from the unique format.

Bertrand Le Griffon trains hunters and jumpers alongside his wife Denielle Gallagher-Le Griffon, an international dressage rider at Remapo Equestrian Center in Suffern, NY. He brought Annie McFee to show two young horses, Le Griffon returned with Annie McFee after experiencing the February Citrus Series show. He knew the facility because his wife had competed in dressage at Jim Brandon Equestrian Center.

“I think it’s great because I have a lot of young horses,” said Le Griffon about the Citrus Series shows. “It’s very easy and relaxed for the young horses to get in the ring and learn with no pressure. We have the time to do the right thing.”

“I like the big ring because even the big horses have room to turn and all the lines are easy, the jumps have these beautiful flowers and walls and the footing is very good,” said Le Griffon. “I think it’s great to use this facility for the jumpers, and I just really love the Citrus Series. We rode two horses last week and I’m going to bring maybe four next week; we’re very excited about it.”

Robert Matz from Coatesville, PA and trained by Lynn Caristo Forgione returned with his horse Wise Guy to compete in the .80m-.85m jumpers. Matz is the son of famed international grand prix rider turned successful racehorse trainer, Michael Matz, and his wife, Dee Dee Matz. Dee Dee Matz shared how much she appreciates how easy it is to show at Citrus Series, to know when you show and get in and out in a reasonable time frame.

Morgan Kennedy and Guidam

Regulars Darragh Kerins, Maarten Huygens and Morgan Kennedy brought several horses. Kevin and Diana Babington and Sissy Wickes also returned with developing horses.

Join the fun at Citrus Series when it returns on Tuesday, March 18 and on Saturday, March 22 for hunter, jumper and equitation classes.

Citrus Series Announces March Tuesday Shows

Allison O’Neill and Ramiro with Manny Aguilar / Photo by Carrie Wirth.

James Lala’s Ridiculously Affordable Citrus Series Is Back

Wellington, FL – March 9, 2013 – Citrus Series Horse Show Wellington will offer two Tuesday shows in March. The first comes right up on March 11 and the second on March 18. The ring will open for flat at 10 a.m. with classes kicking off at 11 a.m. New for the Tuesday show, Citrus Series will also hold the 3′ Phelps Media Group Southeast Medal Junior qualifying class.

Citrus Series is an ideal and affordable way for horses and riders to gain valuable competition mileage. Something unheard of at rated shows, show manager James Lala has the hunter, jumper and equitation courses at the same height in one ring, making it ultra-convenient and time saving. There is a set time schedule so exhibitors know when they show.

Citrus Series shows are held at Jim Brandon Equestrian Center at Okeeheelee Park, a wonderful facility offering great footing, permanent stalls, plenty of parking and permanent restrooms. Citrus Series offers beautiful courses and decoration- perfect prep for AA shows like WEF. Plus, the show series is extremely user-friendly. They offer warm-ups and do-over options to make certain horses and riders leave with a positive experience under their belt.

“We have produced a really great way to get horses and riders ready for the bigger AA circuits,” said James Lala. “We hope to see you there!”

Here is what people are saying about the Citrus Series:

“This is his second outing in Florida,” said Corina Peterson of her horse, ridden by trainer Kalie Butcher. “I love the show grounds; it is good for him to get out and get experience. We’ll be back.”

“I think what James is doing is a very good thing, because it gives the kids a place to show at a quality facility where they have a chance to improve and move forward,” said Steve Lengyel of Wall Street Farm.

“It is super organized,” said Courtney Yecker. “The jumps are fantastic. The ring and the upkeep of the schooling area was really nice and the courses were amazing.”

“This is a great opportunity especially for people who have horses for sale and kids who want to go in the ring without so much pressure.” ~ Ivan Rakowsky, Team Rakowsky

“This is the way a horse show should be.” ~ Kama Godek

Citrus Series Saturday Show Is Super

Numbers Growing as More Discover Citrus Series Benefits

Wellington, FL – February 25, 2014 – Saturday was a perfect day to show at the new Citrus Series at Jim Brandon Equestrian Center at Okeeheelee Park. The show series, managed by James Lala and his Lala Land Productions, is growing in popularity as trainers and riders discover the ideal setting that the series management creates, especially for developing horses and riders looking for mileage or confidence over hunter, jumper and equitation courses.

“The hunter, jumper and equitation courses are set and available at each height, at the same time,” said Lala. “The classes at the same height may be ridden in any order. Another feature of the format is that trainers may hop on and ride in a warm-up if their student is having difficulties. Then the student can get back in the ring. I have yet to see a rider leave without a sense of accomplishment and improvement.”

An additional feature of the show includes the option for do-overs.

“When do you get the chance at a show to compete with the option to return over the same course, same height and same conditions?” asked Lala.  “I am really pleased that we seeing all levels of riders and horses at Citrus Series.  For example, just this week we had some Olympians and international grand prix riders alongside older adult riders showing for the first time. It is the perfect way to prepare developing horses and riders for the bigger, AA circuits, like WEF.”

Courtney Swan trains at Delray Equestrian Center and brought nine horses and 10 riders to show at Citrus Series. “The staff was great and James is awesome!” said Swan. “The courses were well put together, nice flowers – very colorful. We like that!”

Swan’s clients racked up ribbons and gained experience at Citrus Series.

“Not everyone can do WEF,” explained Swan. “Citrus Series provides an option to get people out of the barn so they can show. They had a blast!”

Steve and Heidi Lengyel’s Wall Street Farm was well-represented at the show. Jocelyn Morrero and Indigo swept the 2’3″ equitation division and Hannah Bentz and Alexandra Malys earned respectable ribbons and invaluable experience from the show.

“I think what James is doing is a very good thing, especially in the wintertime, because it gives the kids a place to show at a quality facility where they have a chance to improve and move forward,” said Steve Lengyel. “Not everybody is ready to show at WEF and it gives them an affordable alternative for show-quality jumps and courses. I think it is a great idea. Everyone is nice and goes out of their way to make sure everyone has a good time. It is a show about exhibitors and for exhibitors versus show management.”

Trainer Courtney Yecker brought a number of clients to compete at Citrus Series, including two students moving up, one with a new horse. Both will show at WEF but Citrus Series served as a the perfect venue to get their feet wet at the new height and division. Yecker also brought an over-60 rider that just started jumping and another student who flew in for the weekend to show.

“It is super organized,” said Yecker. “The jumps are fantastic. The ring and the upkeep of the schooling area was really nice and the courses were amazing.”

Her clients responded well to the atmosphere at Citrus Series. “They rode wonderfully,” Yecker said of her clients.

“Citrus Series is offering a less expensive, quality show to compliment the top-notch competition that already exists in Wellington,” Lala said. “When the word gets out it will mean more horses and more business for Wellington and the larger shows. It is a win-win!”

Citrus Series returns on Tuesday, March 11 and 18 for hunters and jumpers and on Saturday, March 22 for hunters, jumpers and equitation.

Stars Come Out for Citrus Series Tuesday Show

Darragh Kerrins and Emir / Photos by Carrie Wirth.

Olympians and Amateurs Benefit from Citrus Series Format

Wellington, FL – February 20, 2014 – Citrus Series Horse Shows at Jim Brandon Equestrian Center at Okeeheelee Park provide the perfect setting for trainers to bring their developing horses for an easy-going outing and for amateurs to gain confidence over both hunter and jumper courses. The second Tuesday afternoon show was held on February 18 and was attended by horses and riders from a wide range of levels and abilities, all who benefited from the unique format.

Lynn Caristo Forgione brought her student Robert Matz and Wise Guy to compete in the .80m-.85m jumpers. Matz is the son of Michael and Dee Dee Matz. Michael Matz is one of the country’s most beloved and successful equestrians. He represented the U.S. at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and won the Gold Medal at the 1979 Pan American Games and won countless grand prix events.

“We were very pleased with the facilities and we were very pleased with how he rode,” said the elder Matz. “His pony was one that my wife got and both his older brother and his older sister rode. Now he’s the third rider and he’s doing his job.”

Carina Peterson from North Brookfield, Mass. brought her 8-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Believe in Miracles, to Citrus Series for some show ring experience in the 1.0m jumpers.

“This is his second outing in Florida,” said Peterson of her horse, ridden by trainer Kalie Butcher. “I love the show grounds; it is good for him to get out and get experience. We’ll be back on Saturday.”

Maarten Huygens and Knockout

Top international riders like Darragh Kerrins and Maarten Huygens returned to Citrus Series the show to put some rounds in on their up-and-coming jumpers.

The unrated show was developed by trainer and Wellington Quarantine owner James Lala in response to the requests he has heard from trainers, owners and riders over the years. Citrus Series offers options for warm-ups and do-overs so that riders can accomplish a great deal in one ridiculously affordable show outing. It is the perfect way to prepare developing horses and riders for the bigger, AA circuits, like WEF.

Citrus Series returns on Saturday, Feb. 22 for hunter, jumper and equitation classes and is adding two Tuesdays next month on March 11 and March 18.
