US Finishes Second in FEI Nations Cup Dressage Series

Hickstead, England – The Dutta Corp. U.S. Dressage Team clinched the bronze medal after having solid performances at the FEI Nations Cup CDIO3* Hickstead. Chef d’Equipe Robert Dover guided the U.S. team of Katherine Bateson-Chandler, Susan Dutta, Chase Hickok, and Charlotte Jorst to deliver quality tests throughout the three days of competition. The U.S. Team for Hickstead (USEF Archive)

Hickstead, United Kingdom – The U.S. sends a promising group into this week’s FEI Nations Cup at CDIO3* Hickstead, running July 31 – August 3. The team of Katherine Bateson-Chandler, Susie Dutta, Brian Hafner, and Lisa Wilcox, led by Chef d’Equipe Debbie McDonald, have drawn third in the order of five international teams. Nations Cup competition kicks off Thursday with the first day of Grand Prix competition, and continues Friday with the second half of the combinations performing the FEI Grand Prix Test. Bateson-Chandler (Wellington, Fla.) and longtime owner Jane Clark have found an exciting prospect in the 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare Wellnetta. With former rider Laurens van Lieren, of The Netherlands, the mare contested the 2013 Reem Acra FEI World Cup Dressage Final. Bateson-Chandler, a 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games veteran, began riding Wellnetta at the beginning of this year and quickly earned top placings at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival. Most recently, the pair was second in the Grand Prix Special at CDI3* Hartpury.

Dutta (Wellington, Fla.) is making her second Nations Cup start of the summer with Tim Dutta Inc.’s Currency DC, after representing the U.S. at CDIO5* Rotterdam in June. At the prestigious show in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Dutta and the 14-year-old Oldenburg gelding finished seventh in the Grand Prix Special. To close out the month of June, the pair produced solid work at CDI4* Perl. Before travelling to Europe for the summer, Dutta spent the winter competing at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival. Additionally, she will ride Tim Dutta’s Lumberjack 12 in Small Tour competition at Hickstead.

Hafner has travelled from his Penngrove, Calif., base to spend the summer in Europe competing his own and Rebecca Hafner’s Lombardo LHF in Big Tour competition. Prior to heading overseas, the pair won at the Capistrano Dressage International CDI-W. Alongside Dutta, Hafner and Lombardo LHF were part of the U.S. Nations Cup team in Rotterdam, where they also earned a 12th-place finish in the Freestyle.

Wilcox (Loxahatchee, Fla.) and Betty Wells’ Denzello head into the weekend’s competition in strong form after competing at CDI4* Fritzens and CDI4* Aachen as members of the Short List for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games U.S. Dressage Team. In Aachen, they led the U.S. effort, finishing 12th in the CDI4* Grand Prix. Prior to heading to Europe, the 11-year-old Hanoverian gelding finished eighth in The Dutta Corp/USEF Grand Prix Dressage National Championship and Selection Trial for the U.S. Dressage Team Short List for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

US Dressage Team Scores Second Place Finish in CDIO3* Hickstead’s Nation Cup

Hickstead, England – The U.S. Dressage Team continued to show their resurgence on the international stage, cruising to a second place finish in FEI Nations Cup competition at the CDIO3* Hickstead. Sunday’s competition utilized a new format using the Freestyle to determine Nations Cup results rather than the traditional Grand Prix Test.

Leading the U.S. was Kathleen Raine (Murrieta, CA) and Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage Program graduate Breanna. The combination who were awarded a USET Foundation funded USEF Grant demonstrated their growth helping the U.S. to earn a second place finish in Hickstead’s Nation Cup. Jennifer Mason, David Wightman and Raine’s 13-year-old Hanoverian mare scored 75.650% in Sunday’s Freestyle to finish in third place individually.

Guenter Seidel and Coral Reef Wylea scored 75.625% to finish fourth individually and help secure a podium a finish for the Americans. Seidel (Cardiff, CA) and Coral Reef Ranch’s 13-year-old Westphalian mare were also awarded USEF Grant to train and compete in the Europe. The pair has gained valuable experience this summer earning top placings and the Lingen CDI and Hickstead CDIO.

On Sunday, Shelley Francis (Loxahatchee, FL) and Doktor demonstrated the experience they have earned competing in Europe this summer on a USEF Grant. The 1998 FEI World Equestrian Games veteran and Patricia Stempel’s 10-year-old Oldenburg gelding produced a polished effort to score 74.500% and finish fifth individually.

Rounding out the U.S. effort in Nations Cup competition was Arlene “Tuny” Page and longtime partner Alina. Full (Wellington, FL) and her 15-year-old Danish Warmblood mare were the first U.S. pair in the ring, scoring 69.200% and finished in 21st individually.

Chef d’Equipe Robert Dover was extremely proud of the U.S effort in Hickstead and believes there is more potential for growth in the coming months for the U.S. in the future.

“The U.S. brought back the Silver in the Nation’s Cup at Hickstead decisively with third, fourth and fifth placings by Kathleen Raine, Guenter Seidel and Shelly Francis respectively. While the Freestyle was used for today’s Nation’s Cup, it is important to note that our athletes were equally great in the Grand Prix over 2 days and with 45 entries, with the same three all well over 70% and Tuny Page and her super mare, Alina, close behind with 69.7. We are also proud of newcomers to international competition, David Blake and Ikaros as well as Katherine Bateson-Chandler with Alcazar,” said Dover. “Thanks to Dr. Rick Mitchell and Julie as well as Jenny Van Wieren-Page for their amazing help. Thanks also to the owners, grooms, and all who came out to support our Team. And of course, thanks to both our USEF and USET Foundation for making it possible to make it possible for our two and four-legged athletes to attend great competitions like Hickstead around the world and bring back medals!”
