North Salem, NY – September 13, 2015 – Old Salem Farm was home to the Region 2 ASPCA/NHSAA Maclay Championship during the American Gold Cup CSI4*-W this week. Top local equitation riders competed on Saturday with hopes to qualify for the ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship Championship Finals at the National Horse Show in Lexington, KY this November.

Old Salem Farm gives equitation riders an early opportunity for indoor competition at a top-quality venue before Indoor Finals each fall. Frank Madden, trainer at Old Salem Farm, was proud to host the Region 2 Championship, stating, “The American Gold Cup is always a highlight of our year at Old Salem Farm, and to have the Region 2 Maclay be a part of that only adds to the excitement of the week.”

“I was glad to see such great rides today, but also to see show jumping fans from the local community come out to enjoy the events,” he concluded.

Sixteen-year-old Katherine Bundy of Westport, CT impressed in all three phases to take top honors over 37 riders. Bundy was one of six pairs to return for additional testing. Taylor St. Jacques of Glen Allen, VA returned first, followed by Maya Nayyar of New York, NY; T. J. O’Mara of Rumson, NJ; Bundy; Lucy Deslauriers of New York, NY; and lastly, Katherine Strauss of Southampton, NY.

When Bundy was called back to flat in Section A, she knew her trip to Kentucky was final and breathed a sigh of relief before her test. “It was a good feeling to know I had made it going into the flat and I am really excited now that I’m in. Now my mom can finally buy a hotel room,” she laughed.

Bundy’s trainer, Missy Clark, uses the equitation offerings at Old Salem Farm during the American Gold Cup as a prelude to Indoor Finals and thinks it serves a pivotal role in getting her riders ready. “It’s a great prep for the upcoming season,” she said. “Getting in this ring throughout the last couple days and getting your sea legs back to ride indoors is important. It’s a great event and we always enjoy coming here.”

The testing order shuffled significantly with Bundy nailing the counter canter for the win. Nayyar took second with a smooth round, while T. J. O’Mara claimed third. St. Jacques settled for fourth, Deslauriers was fifth, and Strauss capped the top six.

“The courses were really friendly and inviting, and the jumps were beautiful, which always helps,” said Bundy, who piloted Levkoi. The gelding is a mount she owns and has been riding for two years, but just returned to the tack this winter after an injury. “He is one of most comfortable horses I’ve ever ridden. It’s the closest thing to floating on a cloud,” she said the horse she calls Leo around the barn. “It all came together for us this year in Lake Placid, but we even made a little mistake there, so I redeemed myself here.”

This week at Old Salem Farm, the American Gold Cup is one of only seven events that will comprise the East Coast division of the all-new Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League. North Salem, NY – September 9, 2015 – Old Salem Farm is proud to host the American Gold Cup CSI4*-W Sept. 9-13 as the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League calls Westchester County’s North Salem, NY, home this week. The $215,000 Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping New York, which will take place Sunday, September 13, was named part of the recently created League and is one of the first 2015 qualifiers for the 2015 Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final.

Old Salem Farm’s pristine grounds, list of elite horses and riders, and special events for the whole family draws spectators from Westchester County and beyond each year to watch horses and riders compete in international-level sport at the American Gold Cup and Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows.

This year, the American Gold Cup was selected as one of only seven events that will comprise the East Coast division of the all-new Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping North American League that launched in Miami, FL earlier this year.

Fourteen nations will be represented in the star-studded list of riders at the American Gold Cup, including past winners, rising talent and international contenders. Andre Thieme made the trip from Germany to New York to make an early bid at the Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Final, the most sought-after individual global championship for show jumpers, with his string of FEI horses.

“With more and more FEI events being offered in the U.S., I am pleased to able to spend more time competing here,” said Thieme, who spends his winters in Florida. “Old Salem Farm is a top facility, not only in the U.S., but the world. I am excited to be a part of newly formed North American League, and hope that I can get some early leverage towards qualifying for the 2105 Final.”

Old Salem Farm is one of a total 14 North American League locations across the U.S., Mexico and Canada and was selected earlier this year after a rigorous screening process from a long list of 25 applicants.

“The American Gold Cup is a highlight for Old Salem Farm each year and to be included in the North American League has made the event even more special for riders, spectators and the local economy as a whole,” said Alan Bietsch, Old Salem Farm Manager. “To see more international-level events call the U.S. home is a great thing for horse sport, and Old Salem Farm is honored to be part of that movement.”

In cooperation with the American Gold Cup, Old Salem Farm will also offer opportunities for Junior, Amateur and Children’s Jumpers to enjoy the prestige of this week’s event, as well as host the ASPCA/NHSAA Maclay Championship.

Laura Kraut and Andretti S Soar to Second Place at the $200,000 American Gold Cup

Laura Kraut and Andretti S.

North Salem, NY – September 16, 2014 – Sunday afternoon’s $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W was a fight to the finish. Six riders raced against the clock in an attempt to add their name to the illustrious list of previous winners. In the end, it came down to Jessica Springsteen aboard Vindicat W and her long-time trainer, Olympian Laura Kraut with the Stars and Stripes’ Andretti S.

Springsteen was the first, of six, to return to the jump off. Setting a fast pace, the pair stopped the timers at 35.360 seconds. Although each consecutive rider attempted to catch her time, they could not compensate accuracy for speed, either incurring faults or riding to a more conservative clear round.

Kraut was the last of the group to tackle the jump-off. Picking up the gallop, Kraut pulled the clutch with Andretti S, chasing Springsteen’s time. When Kraut left out a risky stride to the double combination, the audience was on the edge of their seats. Andretti soared through the effort, but Kraut reeled him in a little to the final fence, a decision that added a stride to earn the duo the second place. They finished in 36.660 seconds, only one second shy of Springsteen’s time.

“I don’t know what I was thinking at the double combination,” Kraut said. “It was either going to be victory or a disaster, and he just tried so hard to help me out there. I knew I had a choice to just go really flat out down to the final fence, but he’s still a young horse and I thought rather than taking the chance of crashing or doing something that would scare him, I’d just sort of stay conservative. It cost me but I’m happy with second.”

Laura Kraut and Andretti S, a new mount as of last fall, have been climbing the ranks of international competition throughout the summer. Andretti S is a 9-year-old Dutch Warmblood who is an up and coming international super-star with Kraut in the saddle. This summer in Europe and now at the Gold Cup, Andretti S has proven himself a top competitor on the international stage, showcasing his speed among the best horse and rider combinations in the world. Andretti S is owned by the Stars and Stripes Syndicate in which Cherry Knoll Farm is a proud shareholder.

“I’m just so happy with him,” Kraut expressed. “I don’t want to say that I’m surprised, but I am a little surprised that he’s come along as quickly as he has. When I started in Florida with him, I was jumping small 1.40m classes, and he really didn’t have a lot of mileage. All of a sudden it’s started to come to him. It was a difficult test for him today, but he handled it great.”

Kraut stood to the left of student, Springsteen, on the podium, smiling as she accepted the second place award.

“I’m thrilled! That’s the highest placing I’ve had on this horse ever. I don’t begrudge the victory to somebody who deserves it,” Kraut concluded.

Kraut will now prepare for the Central Park Horse Show, Longines L.A. Masters and the National Horse Show. For more information on Cherry Knoll Farm, please visit http://www.cherryknollfarminc.com/.

Jessica Springsteen and Vindicat W Victorious in $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W

Jessica Springsteen and Vindicat W.

North Salem, NY – September 14, 2014 – The sold-out crowd of nearly 6,000 fans cheered following the conclusion of Sunday afternoon’s $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W held at the idyllic Old Salem Farm in North Salem, New York. Jessica Springsteen flashed a huge smile as she raised the prestigious American Gold Cup trophy high above her head.

Springsteen and Vindicat W bested a field of 32 other qualified international entries to add their names to the list of accomplished riders and horses who have won the $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W before them. Springsteen’s parents Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa and family friend, NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, were all on hand to cheer her on.

This year, as Springsteen stood atop the podium, her trainer, Olympian Laura Kraut, stood to her left and fellow young rider, Katie Dinan, joined her to her right. The three American women had swept the medal positions in an exciting and fitting end to the 2014 American Gold Cup.

“It’s absolutely incredible,” Springsteen said. “To win such a prestigious class is really amazing. My horse jumped super so I’m so thrilled.”

Video Courtesy of ShowNet, USEF Network and NBC Sports Network

Springsteen was fourth to jump over the first round of the Alan Wade designed course, and she set the pace for how her day would go, turning in a clear round that would lead the class from beginning to end.

“The fences, especially at the end, were pretty big,” Springsteen said. “It was definitely tough enough, but after walking the course I knew exactly what my plan was going to be. That was kind of a relief since I went so early; I was just able to go in and execute the plan and hope for the best.”

Springsteen and Vindicat W, owned by Stone Hill Farm of Colts Neck, New Jersey, were joined in the jump-off by five other top contenders: Candice King and Kismet 50, Todd Minikus and Babalou 41, Wilton Porter and Diamonte Darco, Dinan and Nougat Du Vallet and Kraut and Andretti S.

As the first to go clear in the first round, Springsteen was also the first to return to jump-off, and she and Vindicat W laid down a speedy time to beat in 35.360 seconds.

One rail each fell for Candice King and Wilton Porter, relegating them to fifth and sixth place respectively, and for Minikus and Babalou 41 a clear round in a time of 37.920 seconds would put them into the eventual fourth place position.

With Springsteen’s time still the pace to catch, it all came down to Dinan and Kraut.

Dinan and her veteran mount Nougat Du Vallet, owned by Grant Road Partners LLC of New York, New York, turned in an impressive ride over the seven-obstacle jump-off course, but their time of 37.920 seconds would come up short of the top spot.

So it was left to a race between trainer and student, as Kraut entered the ring to try to best Springsteen’s time on Andretti S, a 9-year-old Dutch Warmblood owned by Stars and Stripes of Middleburg, Virginia.

Kraut left out a risky stride into the double combination and sailed over the course with room to spare, but she elected to add a stride to the final fence, which would just narrowly cost her the class as she finished in a time of 36.660 seconds.

Laura Kraut and Andretti S

“I knew when I cleared the second to last fence and I turned him, I had a choice to just go really flat out down to it, but he’s still a young horse,” Kraut said. “I thought rather than taking the chance of crashing or doing something that would scare him, I’d just sort of stay conservative. Yeah, it cost me, but I’m happy with second.”

Kraut has every reason to be thrilled with the outcome today. At the beginning of the year, she was competing the young Andretti S in the 1.40m jumpers, but today the up-and-comer stepped up to the plate and answered every question that was asked of him at 1.60m.

“I’m just so happy with him,” Kraut said. “Just all of a sudden it’s really started to come to him. It was a difficult test for him today, and he handled it great.”

Kraut continued, “And I’m so thrilled for [Jessica]! She’s been so close so many times. She’s been amazing all summer. She deserved it today. She rode great. Her first round was textbook perfect and so was her jump-off. I said to her: “If you lose, if you get beaten it would be unlucky.” She really did everything just right. I didn’t even think I could get that close to her, so I’m pleased that I was as close as I was.”

Springsteen has been riding and training with Kraut for over three years and was thrilled to have the opportunity to stand atop the podium with her today.

“She’s just taught me so much at this level like how to be competitive in big classes like this,” Springsteen said. “She taught me how to really fight for it and fight for the win.”

Kraut added, “She’s such an incredible rider, and she has such a great feeling. When she makes a mistake it’s normally so small and so random. [She and Vindicat W] know each other inside and out right now. They’ve been on such a good roll this whole summer and winter. I just leave it to her.”

Next, Springsteen and Kraut will travel to the Longines Los Angeles Masters with hopes of matching their huge success at American Gold Cup.

“It’s a beautiful facility. The grass field footing was absolutely fantastic,” Kraut said. “It’s really nice to come back to such a special horse show devoted only to jumpers which is really unique in America. We do it all summer in Europe, so this is like going to a European horse show in America. It’s great. I’m just so happy we came back [from Europe] for it.”

Now in its 44th year, the 2014 American Gold Cup was considered a huge success by all, including the event organizers, Stadium Jumping and Old Salem Farm.

“In a word it was perfect – the weather, the great crowd. It rained just enough last night to make the grand prix field footing perfect. It was a great class,” said Michael Morrissey, president of Stadium Jumping. “We are grateful to all our sponsors and to Westchester County for helping us get the word out there to help us get such a wonderful audience.”

Darragh Domination of American Gold Cup CSI4*-W Continues with Third Win in a Row

Darragh Kenny and Prof De La Roque jump onto the tabletop in Saturday’s $34,000 Fidelity Investments Speed Derby.

North Salem, NY – September 13, 2014 – Darragh Kenny has done it again. For the third day in a row, the talented Irish athlete made headlines at the American Gold Cup CSI4*-W, this time after clinching the victory in the $34,000 Fidelity Investments Speed Derby CSI4*.

The Speed Derby victory comes amidst an unbelievable American Gold Cup winning streak for Kenny. On Thursday, he blew the competition out of the water to claim victory in the $34,000 Don Little Memorial Welcome aboard Gatsby. On Friday, the pair did it again, turning in the fastest clear jump off time to win the $100,000 Hermès American Gold Cup Qualifier. A third victory for Kenny however, would not come without a hard earned fight for the fastest finish.

Fellow Irishman Ronan McGuigan galloped into the Speed Derby course aboard Capall Zidane with guns blazing. McGuigan successfully navigated the rolling terrain and the 14 obstacles of the Alan Wade designed course set on the grass grand prix field of Old Salem Farm, to turn in a clear ride in 79.890 seconds.

Fifteen more horse and rider combinations completed the course that wound around the Old Salem Farm grand prix field. None would come close to matching or besting McGuigan’s time. But Kenny was determined to keep his phenomenal win streak alive and not even a downed rail would stop him from doing just that.

Aboard Prof De La Roque, owned by Postage Stamp Farm, LLC of Wellington, FL, Kenny flew over the course, up and down the tabletop fences and down a slight grassy embankment at an impressive clip. The speed caught up to the pair at one fence as a rail rolled out of the cups and hit the grass, but at the end, Kenny and Prof De La Roque blazed through the finish line timers in 75.850 seconds.

That time was just four-hundredths of a second fast enough to earn the victory, even with the additional four seconds added for the rail penalties, relegating McGuigan to second place. Rounding out the top three were Peter Lutz and Robin De Ponthual who finished clear in a time of 81.170 seconds.

The victory on Saturday with Prof De La Roque is not only the third major victory in the same number of days at the American Gold Cup for Kenny; it comes in the midst of what has been a year of incredible success for Kenny.

Most recently, he earned back-to-back wins at the Hampton Classic Horse Show before immediately boarding a plane to France for the World Equestrian Games where he was named 12th in the world.

“It’s been going amazing. I’ve had an incredible year,” Kenny said. “To be honest, it’s very little to do with me. It has to do with the horses that I have, the people that are behind me and the staff that work with me. The team behind all of me is all of them. That’s what makes everything go so well.”

Kenny and his team will now set their sights on the feature event of the 2014 American Gold Cup: the $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W Grand Prix. He and Gatsby will join some of the world’s top competitors on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Flo Fulton First in $10,000 Mitchell-Innes & Nash Fine Art Adult Jumper Classic

The Adult Jumpers rode to their finale today in the $10,000 Mitchell-Innes & Nash Fine Art Adult Jumper Classic. From a field of 55 horses, 23 advanced to jump-off before Flo Fulton and her mount Mirell rode away with the win.

Flo Fulton and Mirell
Flo Fulton and Mirell

“We got [Mirell] in February, and we really clicked from the beginning,” Fulton said of the 8-year-old Hanoverian mare. “She’s really a little winner. When we’re feeling on, we always have great rounds. She doesn’t like you to fuss with her or push and pull. Once you get the motor going, she’ll really just take you to the fence.”

Outside of riding, Fulton, who trains with Jeffery Welles, operates her own consulting firm, aiding luxury brands with strategic events. She, her husband and their dog split their time between New York, Los Angeles, CA and Colorado, but she always enjoys traveling to the American Gold Cup.

“I love this farm. I love the Morrisseys [of Stadium Jumping]. They run an amazing horse show,” Fulton said. “I also love that they have the Hermès booth here so that I can do a little shopping!”

Finishing in a close second behind Fulton were Dean Dignelli and Redefin, while Laura Faulkner and Pompadour rounded out the top three.

Top Equitation Riders Compete in the Region 2 ASPCA/NHSAA Maclay Regional Championship

While the American Gold Cup CSI4*-W is a renowned show dedicated almost strictly to show jumping, it is also home to the esteemed Region 2 ASPCA/NHSAA Maclay Regional Championships.

A top finish in one of the ASPCA/NHSAA Maclay Regional Finals is necessary to advance to the prestigious ASPCA Alfred B. Maclay National Championship at the National Horse Show in Kentucky on Nov. 2, 2014.

Taking the top three spots in today’s Region 2 Finals were Michael Hughes, Ailish Cunniffe and Lucy Deslauriers, respectively.

Tune in to the exciting conclusion of the 2014 American Gold Cup Sunday at 2 p.m. with the live streaming of the $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W Grand Prix available here!

Darragh Kenny and Gatsby Go Two-for-Two at American Gold Cup CSI4*-W

Darragh Kenny and Gatsby are on a roll, claiming four consecutive victories together.

North Salem, NY – September 12, 2014 – For anyone looking to wager on Sunday’s $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI4*W Grand Prix, consider placing a bet on Darragh Kenny. The Irishman is on quite the hot streak at this year’s American Gold Cup; yesterday he earned a definitive victory in the $34,000 Don Little Memorial Welcome Stake aboard Allison Toffolon’s Gatsby, and today the same duo did it again, clinching the win in the $100,000 Hermès American Gold Cup Qualifier.

Rewind to a month ago and Kenny had yet to even show the 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse. Now a few short weeks later, the pair has racked up an impressive track record, winning all four of their last four attempts.

“He’s an amazing horse,” Kenny said. “He just keeps winning all the time. It’s unbelievable.”

With three wins with Kenny already under his belt, today’s 1.60m track, set on the beautiful grass field at Old Salem Farm, served as the next big test for Gatsby.

“This is the first time that I’ve ever jumped him this big and he jumped it so easily,” Kenny said. “I was really happy with him.”

Many other more experienced horses did not fare as well as Gatsby, as rails continued to roll out of cups throughout the challenging course, designed by Alan Wade and intended to separate the best of the best from the rest for qualification to compete in Sunday’s $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI*4W Grand Prix.

Watch an interview with Darragh Kenny following his win, including clips of his jump-off ride.

“Alan Wade is an Irish course designer, and he is to me one of the best course designers in the world,” Kenny said. “He’s incredible. He built a really super course today. It caused a lot of problems everywhere, not just in one place. I think he got a great outcome in the class.”

Of the 59 competitors competing in the first round, five would advance without fault to the jump-off, while 15 others would finish on just four faults.

Young rider Wilton Porter and his mount Diamonte Darco were the first to go clear in the opening round, but a thrown shoe in the schooling ring would move the talented pair down the return list for the jump-off.

Instead, it was Christine McCrea with Zerly, owned by Candy Tribble of Suffield, CT, who came back first to jump-off. The pair was clear all the way to the final fence, a large, orange Hermès oxer, but the rail hit the ground leaving them with four faults in a time of 48.120 seconds. Megan Nusz and Dynamo, owned by Amalaya Investments of Houston, TX, were next in the ring, and they were met with the same fate as a rail came down on the last oxer. The pair’s slightly quicker time of 47.610 seconds would move them just ahead of McCrea and Zerly for the eventual fourth place finish.

Kenny and Gatsby were the next to return, and they left nothing to chance going clear all the way through to the end in a quick time of 44.280 seconds.

“I knew that Brianne [Goutal] could be very fast, and Wilton [Porter], his horse pulled a shoe in the warm-up, so he had to go after me. So I knew I had to be quick. In the end it proved to be quick enough,” Kenny said.

With shoe back on, Porter and Diamonte Darco returned after Kenny to go clear in a time of 51.850 seconds, a time that would be good enough for the third place finish in the end.

Brianne Goutal and Nice De Prissey finished second in the $100,000 Hermes American Gold Cup Grand Prix Qualifier
Brianne Goutal and Nice De Prissey finished second in the $100,000 Hermes American Gold Cup Grand Prix Qualifier

Edging out Porter for the second place spot were last year’s $200,000 American Invitational CSI4*-W Grand Prix winners, Brianne Goutal and Nice de Prissey. The pair ended on a clear round in a time of 51.460 seconds. For the second day in a row, Kenny won the class by a significant margin of more than five seconds.

Catherine Tyree First and Second in $3,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Power and Speed

Not unlike Kenny, Catherine Tyree is having her own bit of a win streak, but for Tyree the streak today came within just one class. The Northwestern University sophomore took both of the top two spots in the morning’s $3,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Power and Speed class. She claimed the victory aboard her own Wetter and finished in a close second with Free Style Van Polderhof.

“I’m so happy. Both horses were so great. I couldn’t have asked them to do anything better,” Tyree said. “They both really fought today and were so on their game.”

Tyree continued, “Wetter’s pretty unconventional, but I’ve had him for over two years now, so I’ve adapted my ride to him. I know him like the back of my hand. We’ve done a lot together. I’m really happy that he’s finally in the spotlight and that he got his win because he’s been so great for me ever since I got him. Then Freestyle: She’s 9 years old, but she’s a little bit on the greener side so we just started going fast and kind of starting to challenge her a little bit. She’s been so great so I’m really thrilled with how she was today.”

Tyree heads back to Northwestern next week, but she is always happy to be able to make the trip to the American Gold Cup.

“This is, I think, one of the nicest shows that we have in America. Everything is done so well for the riders and the horses,” Tyree said. “The stalls are great. The rings are phenomenal. With Alan Wade here you get really, really nice courses on the field. It’s a top show, like something in Europe.”

The competition for juniors, amateurs and professionals alike continues at Old Salem Farm tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. Highlights of the day will include the $34,000 Fidelity Investments Speed Derby and the Region 2 ASPCA/NHSAA Maclay Regional Championships.

On Sunday, the horse show comes to an exciting conclusion with the $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI4*W Grand Prix which kicks off at 2 p.m. EST.

All competition will be webcast live throughout the week at www.theamericangoldcup.com, and more information can be found by visiting the website or www.stadiumjumping.com.

Darragh Kenny Is Great with Gatsby at American Gold Cup CSI4*-W

Darragh Kenny and Gatsby.

North Salem, NY – September 11, 2014 – When Darragh Kenny and Gatsby entered the ring as one of the last to go in today’s $34,000 Don Little Memorial Welcome Stake, the time to beat sat at 76.040 seconds. That time, held by Jessica Springsteen and Vindicat W, had been set nearly 50 rounds before and looked like it would remain untouchable.

But by the time Kenny and Gatsby trotted off the grass grand prix field at Old Salem Farm, they had blown Springsteen’s time out of the water by nearly 5.5 seconds and clinched the biggest victory of the day at the American Gold Cup CSI4*-W.

“He’s unbelievable,” Kenny said of Gatsby. “He’s a very fast horse, and he’s very easy to go quick on. He’s so careful, and he just wants to win. He’s truly a fantastic horse.”

Alan Wade set the course for today’s highlight class, which was run according to FEI Art. 238.2.1 with riders pinned according to penalties and time with no jump-off.

Of the 71 starters, 10 produced clear rounds, with Candice King and Kismet 50 paving the way as the early clear pathfinder in a time of 81.50 seconds.

King and Kismet 50’s time was toppled by the next to go clear, as Springsteen, of Colts Neck, NJ, and Vindicat W shaved more than 5 seconds off to take over the lead. Seven of the remaining clears turned in great efforts but all finished more than a second outside of Springsteen’s time. Paul O’Shea and Skara Glenn’s Sienna would come the closest and end up being the eventual third place finishers with a time of 77.840 seconds, while fourth place would go to Schuyler Riley and Dobra de Porceyo who had a time of 78.580 seconds.

Only Kenny and Gatsby made beating the time look easy as the cleared the final vertical with plenty of room and seconds to spare.

The large margin of victory over the 70 other horses competing was an impressive feat in itself, but perhaps equally impressive is the fact that the win today marks Kenny and Gatsby’s third victory in a row.

Owned by Allison Toffolon of Bronxville, NY, Gatsby came to Kenny for the ride when Toffolon went off to school this fall at Southern Methodist University. Since then, Kenny has shown the 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse four times, finishing second the first time out and first in all three of their last efforts, including the win in the $15,000 Merill Lynch Speed Derby and the $10,000 Open Jumpers, both at the Hampton Classic.

“He’s been absolutely incredible. I’m lucky to get the chance to ride him,” Kenny said.

Toffolon will return to the saddle on Gatsby during the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, FL, but in the meantime, there is no place that Kenny would rather have the ride on the stallion than at the American Gold Cup.

“I love this horse show. It’s a great horse show with a great atmosphere,” Kenny said. “They run it really well. The footing is super, and it’s a really enjoyable horse show to be at.”

Kenny continued, “If I had to pick one thing? It’s the atmosphere. It feels like a top show in Europe.”

Prior to Kenny’s victory, the juniors and amateurs took their turn on the grass field for the $3,000 High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumpers, and it was Michael Hughes’ turn to ride away with a win. He took the top call with Luxina while second place went to Catherine Tyree and her own Don’t Go, with Richard Neal and his mount Quadam rounding out the top three.

Julie Welles Jumps to Victory on Opening Day of 2014 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W

Julie Welles and Twan.

Welles and Shane Sweetnam Take Top Calls in $8,000 Danbury Porsche Audi 1.40m Open Jumpers

North Salem, NY – September 10, 2014 – The 2014 edition of the American Gold Cup CSI4*-W kicked off today at Old Salem Farm, and from the perfectly manicured jump field to the phenomenal weather and the equally phenomenal competition, there was no place better to be horse showing today – particularly if you were Julie Welles or Shane Sweetnam.

Welles and Sweetnam each rode away with victories in the $8,000 Danbury Porsche Audi 1.40m Open Jumpers. With over 100 entries, the 1.40m class was run as two split sections on the Grand Prix Field at Old Salem Farm. Welles earned the top call in the morning’s first section aboard Twan and Sweetnam and Bijzonder finished with the blue ribbon in the second section.

Welles and Twan, co-owned by Stephex Stables and Missy Clark of Warren, VT, were one of 22 pairs to go clear over the first Alan Wade designed course and advance immediately to the jump-off course. As one of the last to go, Welles and Twan’s time of 30.478 seconds just edged out second place finishers Laura Kraut and Wilhelmus, owned by Graham Fletcher, who had a time of 30.534 seconds.

It was a tight race at the top of the list; third place finishers Beat Mandli and Grant Road Partners LLC’s (New York, NY) Zaza Harvey were just hundredths of a second behind Kraut and Wilhelmus, tripping the timers at 30.572 seconds.

“The jump-off was a lot of fun,” Welles said. “It was a nice gallop and a rollback and a nice long gallop to the last. You just had to pick and choose how tight you turned and what kind of a direct line you wanted. I was fast enough so it worked for me!”

Welles has had the successful ride on Twan all summer after the 14-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding came to North Run following the 2014 winter circuit in Florida. The pair earned a grand prix victory at the Vermont Summer Festival Horse Shows, and they have been extremely consistent since.

“He’s so much fun. He just goes in there and tries his hardest to leave the poles up, go fast and do whatever you want,” Welles said. “He has a massive stride. So once you get your gallop, you can kind of hear him counting the strides for you. Once you pick up that canter you know you’re good to go. As long as you aim him at the right jump and tell him where to go, he just does it for you.”

In addition to compliments for her mount, Welles had nothing but complimentary things to say about the American Gold Cup itself.

“I think we have to give Stadium Jumping a huge thank you for throwing this event. They do a fantastic job putting on this show,” Welles said. “It’s a delight to come here. It’s relaxing; it’s beautiful, and they do everything to please the exhibitor.”

Welles continued, “I love going out on the grass field. There aren’t that many grass fields that you get to go out on, and it’s nice to do it, especially when the horses jump so well off of it.”

Sweetnam, who won the same class on last year’s opening day of the American Gold Cup, is also quick to compliment the show and the continuous improvements he sees it making each year.

“It’s a great show. They’ve put in a lot of effort in the last couple years to make this a really high standard show,” Sweetnam said. “It’s maybe one of the best in America at the moment.”

He is also quick to compliment his winning mount today, 8-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding, Bijzonder.

“He’s been doing very well this year. I’m very happy with where he’s at at the moment,” Sweetnam said. “He’s already won on grand prix in Kentucky, and he placed well in the Hamptons. He’s going to do the [$100,000 Hermès American Gold Cup Qualifier] class on Friday, which will probably be his biggest class yet. I’m not sure he’ll be competitive this Friday, but it will be a good opportunity for him to learn.”

Finishing in second behind Sweetnam, it was again Laura Kraut. This time she took the second place position aboard Woodstock O, owned by Treesdale Farms in Carmel, IN.

Other victories today included a win for Todd Minikus and Two Swans Farm’s Calypira Z in the $2,500 1.35m Jumpers and a win for Annie Phillips and her own Lennox Lewis 2 in the $2,500 1.30m Jumpers.

The 2014 American Gold Cup CSI4*-W will continue tomorrow with the $34,000 Don Little Memorial Welcome Stake, as well as the $3,000 High Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumpers.

Major highlights throughout the week will include Friday’s $100,000 Hermès American Gold Cup Qualifier, the $34,000 Fidelity Investments Speed Derby and the Region 2 ASPCA/NHSAA Maclay Regional Championships on Saturday and Sunday’s main event: the $200,000 American Gold Cup CSI4*W Grand Prix.

All competition will be webcast live throughout the week at www.theamericangoldcup.com, and more information can be found by visiting the website.
