American Trakehner Assoc. Convention at Jacksonville Equestrian Center (Nov. 11-13)

I am a volunteer with the American Trakehner Association and a Florida Trakehner breeder.  I am writing to ensure you are aware that the American Trakehner Association convention is being held this year at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center on Nov. 11-13, and to invite any/all of your members to come participate in the events!

We are aware of the many assets the JEC brings to north Florida and are actively involved in encouraging the ATA to designate Jacksonville as one of four permanent, rotating sites for our annual conventions.  An involved and interested public would go a long way towards making that point!

You may be already know that the ATA keeps a closed stud book as it slowly rebuilds this oldest of the warmblood breeds from near extinction after WWII, when there were as few as 10 breeding mares left from the great Trakehner stud mare herds.  For this reason, our inspections are very important and one of the highlights of our conventions.  We will have a stallion and a mare inspection at this convention, as well as voluntary marks on foals being presented.

In Memoriam: Luiz Vaz de Almada (POR)

Luiz Vaz de Almada, President of the Portuguese Equestrian Federation since 2004, passed away on 16 October of a heart attack. For the last 50 years, Mr Vaz de Almada was one of equestrian sport’s leading personalities in Portugal. He was involved in the sport as a rider, FEI judge and horse designer, organiser of CSIO 4* Lisbon, breeder, President of the Sociedade Hipica Portuguesa for 20 years and President of the Portuguese Equestrian Federation, a position to which he was elected until 2012.

“Mr Luiz Vaz de Almada will be remembered for his passion and great devotion to equestrian sport both at home and internationally,” FEI President HRH Princess Haya said. “He was instrumental in the organisation of such major events as the European Endurance Open Championships, Portugal as Country Theme at CSIO Aachen, and the FEI General Assembly in Estoril on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the National Federation in 2007. Our sincerest condolences go to Mr Vaz de Almada’s family, the Portuguese National Federation and the country’s equestrian community.”

Loxahatchee, FL – October 21, 2010 – Recently, international grand prix rider Lauren Hough donated the mount Aspirant “Randy” to the Vinceremos Therapeutic Riding Center (VTRC). After suffering some health issues, Randy was unable hold up to the rigors of life as a show horse. Hough has always been a supporter of the work at VTRC and felt that Randy’s gentle nature would make him perfect for a new career helping those with disabilities.

“I have always been a big fan of their program; I think they do a fantastic job there,” said Hough. “Randy has a super character and was not able to stay sound enough for the show ring so it seemed like a perfect match.”

Randy is a 10-year-old Holsteiner gelding who has become the perfect horse for therapy. His gentle nature and “knowing” sense combined with his incredible movement that is therapeutic for many riders have made him very successful. While his manner outside of the ring is sometimes playful, he always knows how to be very careful with his riders.
