“American Equestrians Got Talent” to Debut during Wellington Winter Season

Wellington, FL – December 16, 2014 – Mark your calendar and make your plans now for the new highlight of the winter social calendar in Wellington, Florida. American Equestrians Got Talent will make its debut in 2015 and promises to be a hit, drawing together equestrians from across the disciplines to showcase their non-horsey talents and compete for a grand prize.

Spearheaded by U.S. Dressage Team Chef d’Equipe Robert Dover, American Equestrians Got Talent will serve as the third annual East Coast fundraiser to benefit USEF High Performance Dressage programs through the USET Foundation. After putting on successful events in 2013 and 2014, Dover is planning to take it to the next level in 2015.

“This fundraiser is well underway to becoming our best event yet,” Dover said.

The Grille Fashion Cuisine, centrally located in Wellington, will host auditions every Wednesday evening from Jan. 7 through March 4. Held from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the auditions are open to the entire equestrian community, including riders, grooms and others involved in any discipline from dressage and hunter/jumpers to polo and Western. Come out to The Grille to audition or simply to watch and cheer for the contestants.

PSdressage.com is sponsoring weekly prizes of $500 to be awarded to the top performer at each of the nine auditions. A pair of celebrity judges will be on hand each evening to critique the performances, and the audience’s applause will determine who moves forward to the final and who goes back to the barn.

The most popular contestants from the auditions will square off in the final competition, to be held March 15 at the Global Dressage Festival show grounds. They will each take center stage in the international arena and give their all in hopes of walking away with the title of America’s Most Talented Equestrian and the grand prize, valued at no less than $5,000.

Along with the East Coast event, a West Coast fundraiser will be held in California. The proceeds from both fundraisers will go to the USET Foundation to support USEF’s High Performance Dressage programs. If an equestrian from one of the other FEI disciplines wins the grand prize at the East Coast event, 10 percent of the proceeds from the final event will be directed to that discipline’s High Performance program.

Sponsors, led by Kim and Fred Boyer, Equestrian Sport Productions, Tuny and David Page, and PSdressage.com, are already coming forward to support this exciting event. If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact Sara Ike (908-234-1251 or sara.ike@uset.org) or Robert Dover (Rdover2@aol.com).

USET Foundation Receives $1.5 Million Gift

Joan Hamill.

Hamilton Farm Rotunda Named “The Joan and Corwith Hamill Rotunda”

Gladstone, NJ – December 11, 2014 – The United States Equestrian Team Foundation is pleased to announce the naming of the Hamilton Farm Rotunda “The Joan and Corwith Hamill Rotunda”. Their commitment to equestrian sport began in the 1950s, when Joan was an integral part of the transition of the USET from the U.S. Army to civilians. This naming is made possible through a generous gift of $1.5 Million made to the Gladstone Fund by the The Hamill Family Foundation.

Joan grew up in Chicago riding in Lincoln Park and as her passion for the sport grew, she became very involved in the Eventing community. In 1956 Joan and her daughter Nancy competed in the National Eventing Championships, then named The Wofford Cup, which was held at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs. This experience kindled Joan’s involvement in the recently formed USET, which had assumed the role of fielding international equestrian teams after the United States Cavalry was disbanded.

Nancy commented, “It was an extraordinary, audacious thing for a small cadre of civilians to succeed the huge U.S. Army in this endeavor. My mother was dedicated to the excellence of equestrian performance and committed to the success of the fledgling USET. She was motivated by the energy of the founders’ commitment to the highest level of horse sports. Throughout the rest of her life, she was dedicated to strengthening the USET through a great variety of ways, all of which our father strongly endorsed.”

Joan would eventually go on to serve as a Trustee from 1976-1984 and was then named an Honorary Trustee. Mr. Hamill, “Corky,” served on the Finance Committee during the same period. Their daughters, Betsy Bramsen and Nancy Winter, were both involved in Eventing competitors for several decades. Nancy trained at Hamilton Farms as a short listed member of the 1984 Olympic team. She described this experience as an “extraordinary opportunity, particularly due to the history and elegance of the facility.”

Nancy, Betsy and their brother, Jon, have made this incredible gift in memory of their parents, who were dedicated to the success of our United States Equestrian Teams. “She [Joan Hamill] saw the spirit of the Team,” said Nancy. “There was, and still is, a generosity of people with expertise giving so much time to the equestrian community.”

“The Hamill family’s leadership gift of $1.5 million to the USET Foundation’s Gladstone Fund is truly appreciated and will have a direct and meaningful impact on the competition and training of our United States Equestrian Teams. This funding will be used to continue capital improvements ensuring Hamilton Farm’s status as a world-class facility for our athletes and teams. Joan Hamill was a true leader of the USET in its early years, and it is so fitting that her legacy will be a permanent part of the iconic facility, which continues to train and prepare our riders for international competition. We are proud to name the rotunda, ‘The Joan and Corwith Hamill Rotunda’,” said Tucker Johnson, USET Foundation President & CEO.

In honor of the 100th Anniversary of the Hamilton Farm Stable (2017), the USET Foundation established “The Gladstone Fund” to preserve this important legacy and historic facility. The Hamilton Farm Stable is central to supporting the Foundation’s mission through providing a world-class facility for Olympic, Pan American and World Championship Selection Trials, National Championships, Training Sessions and special equestrian events and exhibitions. The USET Foundation’s headquarters and the High Performance division of the United States Equestrian Federation remain at the facility in Gladstone, NJ.

The Jonathan Wentz Memorial Challenge for High Performance Para Dressage Needs Your Support

Roxanne Trunnell and Nice Touch. Photo By: Susan J. Stickle.

Gladstone, NJ – November 10, 2014 – As the end of year draws near, The Jonathan Wentz Memorial Challenge for High Performance Para Dressage has raised $615,000 towards its $800,000 goal; however, in order to have the funding needed to implement the Para Dressage High Performance program, it needs more support from those in the equestrian community that want to see our Para Dressage riders have the opportunity to achieve competitive excellence in international competition.

The Jonathan Wentz Memorial Challenge is an exciting fundraising initiative that was launched in April thanks to the incredible generosity of Margaret H. Duprey and The Barnfield Foundation. Duprey and The Barnfield Foundation have each pledged up to $200,000, matching, dollar for dollar, gift commitments of $4,000 and above, payable over a four-year period made by April 1, 2015. Just as an example, a gift of $5,000 will provide $15,000 in funding with the match. “The opportunity that we have right now, to literally triple the amount of funding, is something people need to recognize and understand what a tremendous impact they can make for these most deserving athletes,” said Bonnie B. Jenkins, USET Foundation Executive Director.

“The Para athletes in the United States work very hard and deserve our unwavering support,” commented Duprey. “I became involved with The Jonathan Wentz Memorial Challenge for High Performance Para Dressage because there were no grants that these riders could apply for and I recognized the need to do something that could make a meaningful difference. The Para riders are just as important as the able-bodied riders and they deserve the same treatment and funding. I hope that everyone will take the time to support this effort, so that we can help these riders bring home medals.”

The purpose of this Challenge is to establish a base of funding for each of the next four years, which will provide for a High Performance program that will include training sessions, coaching and international competition opportunities leading up to and including the 2016 Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro.

“Having the support for the Para discipline is awesome,” said 2014 World Equestrian Games Para Athlete Roxanne Trunnell. “There are a lot of very talented Para riders in the United States and knowing that this country is behind us gives encouragement to strive to succeed.”

The Jonathan Wentz Memorial Challenge for High Performance Para Dressage will require extraordinary commitment and the support of those in the equestrian community who love the sport and desire to see our athletes, both equine and human, compete and win at the highest levels of international competition.

Talented US Hopefuls Gain Valuable Knowledge at USEF/USET Foundation Dressage Pipeline Clinic

Gladstone, NJ – October 14, 2014 – The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and the United States Equestrian Team (USET) Foundation held the second Dressage Pipeline Clinic, one of a series of events aimed at pairing the country’s top dressage educators with talented future prospects for international competition.

USEF Chef d’Equipe/Technical Advisor, Robert Dover, USEF Developing Coach, Debbie McDonald, and USEF Developing Horse Coach, Scott Hassler, came together at Linda and Michael Fowler’s Epona Farm in Thousand Oaks, California, on Oct. 11-12 to help showcase, develop and mentor top horses and athletes. The clinic was made possible by USET Foundation trustee Betsy Juliano and Havensafe Farm.

“Because Michael has put up his ranch as a training base for the USET Foundation, we had already had Robert and Debbie come a couple of times,” said Button Baker, who helped plan for the success of the clinic. “So when the pipeline clinic came around, we asked, ‘Can we run it?’ and Michael said ‘yes’.”

“The clinic provides encouragement on all levels – young horses and young riders – and brings people in to get into the spirit of what the sport is all about,” said Fowler. “A perfect outcome of events like these would be more interest in dressage – more people supporting it and raising the standard and the quality. We’re just happy to host the event.”

The participating athletes received individual lessons on their horses and took part in educational sessions focused on fitness and sports psychology as well as how to manage relations with owners, sponsors and the media.

“The two pipeline clinics that the USEF and the USET Foundation have put on so far have caused a great deal of excitement in the community and a feeling of progress toward our shared goal- not just excellence but medal winning,” said Dover. “I am hopeful that we see that everyone is taking part, and riders, horses and auditors go home feeling like they’ve gained something. I hope they will have an ‘ah-ha’ moment that will change their life.”

Ashlyn De Groot, from DG Bar Ranch in Hanford, California, was selected for the clinic and brought her 6-year-old mare, Dalina DG, a Dutch Warmblood mare by Jazz.

“It’s such an honor to be here,” De Groot said. “This is the first time that Scott [Hassler] has had a one-on-one with me. He’s helped me a little bit at horse shows just watching me and giving me pointers. I thank Scott for the support and helping me grow with young horses, as well as pushing me to be better, to really give me confidence.”

Carly Taylor-Smith from Malibu, California and her 4-year-old Rosalut NHF, a dark bay Oldenburg gelding by Rosenthal, were also selected. Taylor-Smith rode “Ludo” to championship honors in the Four-Year-Old division at the USEF/Markel Young Horse Championships.

“It’s a privilege,” said Taylor-Smith. “I’ve never been to something like this before. It’s an honor. I like that we’re covering some of the other aspects as well, like nutrition. And everyone working as a package – it is really great.”
