Triple Gold for Ireland and Germany; French Rider Defends Eventing Title

All of the medals have been decided at the 2020 FEI Pony European Championships in Strzegom. The rivalry ended in the eventing, showjumping individual final, and dressage Freestyle.

Eventing

Irish riders Ben Connors with Cornafest Fred, Josh Williamson with Ardeo Fireman, Matthew Love with Lucky for Some, and Claire O’Ryan with Carhu Melody took the lead after brilliant cross-country trials. Even three knockdowns and the added 12 penalties could not threaten their win, with the result of 104,1, and they took home the gold medal. The best one of them was Ben Connors, who was clear in the jumping trial and finished with the silver individual medal (28,9).

Team silver went to Germany, with the result of 107,6. They kept their second position through all of the trials. Team member Merle Hoffmann with Penny Lane WE finished with the bronze medal individually (31).

The French, defending their last year’s title, lost their dressage lead in the cross-country, after one of their riders had a run-out at the last combination and that knocked them down into third. They added 8 penalties to the score, but that kept them in the bronze medal position, finishing with the score of 108,9.

The best one of them was once again Mae Rinaldi aboard Boston Du Verdon. The dressage leader went over the XC clear and perfectly inside the time, and delivered yet another perfect round, to finish at 25,6. “It’s amazing. My pony was fantastic all week. Yesterday’s cross-country was long, with demanding fences and combinations, but Boston was great as always. Today we were under a lot of pressure, but my pony jumped great and I’m really happy to win the European Championships for the second time in a row!”

Dressage

Germany was unbeatable this year. Their riders took home the gold medal twice, winning both the team classification and Freestyle, and took all the spots at the podium in the individual class.

In the Freestyle, the best one of them was Mia Allegra Lohe with Tovdals Golden Future Imperial – 80,355%; the silver went to Maddy Dijkshoorn from the Netherlands with Boogie De L’Aube – 77,795%.

There was also a historic success for a Polish rider. Veronica Pawluk with D’Artagnan 187 took home the bronze medal, with the result of 77,490%.

Showjumping

Ireland took it all, both in the team and individual classifications. In the individual final, the two decisive rounds have confirmed the amazing form of the Irish, that have dominated the podium. Two riders in green jackets finished all of the 5 courses at this year’s championships on a zero-penalty score. The champion had to be determined in the jump-off. There the win belonged to James Derwin with Rincoola Babog – the same one that secured the team’s gold medal on Friday with his faultless round. Silver went to James Brennan aboard the 9-year-old MHS Glow, and bronze to Coen Williams with Saxton Freedam, who also did not make any mistakes on the jumps throughout the week, but finished the first round with three points for time.

LOTTO Strzegom Horse Trials: The Countdown Is On!

The competition for valuable points in the third leg of the FEI Eventing Nations Cup and the fight for the medals of the Polish Championship takes place in Morawa.

The LOTTO Strzegom Horse Trials competition will start with almost 350 horses at the start, nine cross-country tracks, riders representing 22 countries, and great riders, including the current Olympic champion.

The equestrian triathlon, as eventing is often called, is one of the most spectacular horse sports. It consists of three tests: Dressage, Cross-country, and Show Jumping. During the four days of the tournament, the horse and rider combinations will compete in ten international classes, ranging from one to four stars, including the FEI Eventing Nations Cup. The show will also be the playground of the Polish Championships of seniors, young riders, and juniors.

The arenas of Strzegom will host, among others, the current Olympic champion, Julia Krajewski from Germany, her compatriot Andreas Dibowski, the team Olympic gold medalist, as well as Jonelle and Tim Price from New Zealand, currently fifth and sixth in the world ranking of the International Equestrian Federation. We will also see the leading Polish athletes, members of the national team, including Mateusz Kiempa, Jan Kamiński, Małgorzata Korycka, and Kamil Rajnert.

On Thursday, the riders will start the competition with the dressage test. The cross-country tests will be held for three days and promise to be exciting. The athletes will have nine routes to face, with a total length of nearly 35 kilometers. Over 240 obstacles with a maximum height of 120 cm will be placed over the courses. The longest route will measure 5700 meters. The last test of the equestrian triathlon, the show jumping, will require extreme precision and technical skills.

“Not only the sports competition promises to be exciting. After two years of the Covid pandemic and restrictions for the public, this year we are opening the stands to the audiences and we are planning many attractions,” says Marcin Konarski, chairman of the Organizing Committee.

Special attractions await the youngest fans. In the Little Fan Zone, kids be able to ride a pony, learn how to groom a horse, and meet the stars of the show. A special part of the program is a mini cross-country, performed by children on ponies, and willing kids will be able to try their hand at the jumping competition on foot.

The competition will be held from 23 to 26 June at the hippodrome in Morawa near Strzegom. Admission to the competition is free. Parking costs PLN 20.

Christoffer Forsberg Victorious in 4-Star Class in Strzegom

Swedish rider Christoffer Forsberg with Hippo’s Sapporo was the best in the CCI4*-L, the most demanding class of the second leg of Strzegom Spring Open.

Forsberg took the lead after dressage, and despite going over the time in the cross-country and four faults in the jumping, kept it until the end of the rivalry. Second place belonged to Italy’s Marco Cappai with Uter, who was clear in the jumping, but had some time faults. Third belonged to Hanne Wind Ramsgaard riding Ameq Torino (Rawa’s Torino). The Danish athlete was second after the first trial, and jumped up the ranks after a clear cross-country course with time penalties.

In the CCI4*-S, the winner was Aminda Ingulfson from Sweden with Joystick. A few penalties in the XC and a clear jumping round secured her the win before France’s Maxime Livio with Elvis de Hus Z and Belgian Jarno Verwimp riding Mahalia. The best home rider was Joanna Pawlak with Fantastic Frieda, who took home the sixth.

The competition in the 3*-L ended with a significant reshuffle. The three competitors leading after dressage gave up on continuing the struggle after mistakes during the cross-country test. The winner was Maxime Livio from France with Vitorio du Montet, who was 10th after dressage and went clear in the XC, although 2 seconds late. The deciding factor was his clear jumping round. Second place went to Dutch rider Janneke Boonzaaijer with Bouncer, and third to Sweden’s Christoffer Forsberg riding Celladonn.

The three-star short class ended with the victory of Polish rider Wiktoria Knap with Quintus 134. She took the lead after a faultless cross-country round and even a fence down in the jumping did not threaten her win. Finland’s Veera Manninen with Sir Greg finished second, and Austria’s Robert Mandl with Sacré-Cœur was third.

Andreas Dibowski with Cristallik won the 2*-L. Going up from third after dressage after clear XC and jumping trials, he triumphed over Dutch athletes Merel Blom with Hallo and Janneke Boonzaaijer with I’m Special N.

Saturday’s cross-country trials revealed the best in the 2*-S and 1*-Intro classes. The win in the 2* as well as the third place belonged to Janneke Boonzaaijer with Mirage and Krek-Mora G. Second went to Andreas Dibowski (GER) with Lillet.

The Intro class ended with Swedish rider Malin Petersen’s victory aboard Hulda, before Elmo Laiho (FIN) with Bali and Pole Ksawery Śniegucki riding Don Fuego Corriente.

The Strzegom Spring Open competition selected the winners of seven international and three national competitions, with 250 horses representing 16 countries.

Swedish Rider Victorious in 4* Class in Strzegom

Christoffer Forsberg was the best in the CCI4*-S, the highest ranked class during Strzegom Spring Open. Polish rider won the two-star competition.

Sunday’s cross-country trial, which determined the winner of the four-star class, kept the audiences at the edge of their seats until the end. Christoffer Forsberg with Hippo’s Sapporo who started as the second to last, was the only one to go over the course clear and inside the optimum time, beating the leading German Nicolai Aldinger by one tenth of a penalty point. Aldinger, riding Timmo, did not have any problems with the fences, but time faults cost him the win and ultimately placed him second. Third went to Sweden’s Frida Andersen with Box Leo.

The best home rider in the class was Wiktoria Knap with Quintus 134, who finished eighth.

The podium of the three-star competition was dominated by Dutch women. After clear XC rounds, Merel Blom took home the first riding Corminta Vom Gwick and second with Vesuve d’Aveyron. Third place belonged to Sanne De Jong with Jersey MBF. Mateusz Kiempa with Libertina, leading after two trials, had time faults and placed just outside the podium.

The best rider in the two-star was Daria Kobiernik aboard Ideal Girl. The Pole was sixth after dressage, and jumped up into the lead after clear rounds in the jumping and cross-country. Second place went to Zuzanna Społowicz (POL) with Bankier, and third to Merel Blom with Hallo 53.

The Top Three in the Intro class was all Polish. Karolina Miś with Go Jack kept her lead from the dressage and was victorious after clear jumping and XC rounds. Katarzyna Brandys with Rio Brava was second, and Wiktoria Szynkiewicz with Hattrick was third.

In the CNC 100, the best score belonged to Mateusz Kiempa with All Night, in the CNC 100-18 the winner was Laura Gillmaier with Red Sunrise 2, and in the CNC 8 the best one was Marcin Michałek with Brylant.

The Strzegom Spring Open competition opened the eventing season in Poland. Four international classes in short format and three national classes were held, and almost 230 horse-and-rider combinations representing 14 countries took part. The next edition of Strzegom Spring Open will take place from 22 to 24 April.

Strzegom Opens the Equestrian Sports Season

There’s only a month left till international competitions start in Strzegom. What can the riders expect in the coming season? Five international Eventing shows with other 50 competitions including Nations Cup and FEI European Championships for Ponies in Eventing, Jumping, and Dressage.

As a warm-up, the Strzegom Spring Open competitions will be held in two rounds, on the second and fourth weekend of April. The first event will feature five international classes in short format from two to four stars, an Intro class, and a CCIP2-S competition. Long format classes will be added to the second round of competitions. National classes will also be held at all events: CNC 100, CNC 100-18, CNC 80.

For many riders it will be the first four-star competition this year. The cross-country courses will be design with the aim to give a chance for riders and horses to enter the season smoothly. “In April in Strzegom, the fences always meet the requirements of the level of the competition, but the technical combinations are definitely easier than at the Nations Cup in June. Everything is ready for the event in April including lots of new ideas and questions not seen in Strzegom yet. It will be interesting to see riders’ reactions,” says Marcin Konarski, Course Designer.

The Strzegom Horse Trials, during which the third series of the Nations Cup competition will be held, will take place at the last weekend of June. There will certainly be no shortage of attractions on the cross-country course. It is during this event that cross is the most difficult and spectacular. The riders will compete in seven classes from two to four stars in short and long formations and the Intro class. Competitions for Juniors, Young Riders, and Ponies will also be held: CCIJ2*-S, CCI3*YR-S, CCIP2-S. During the Strzegom Horse Trials, Polish Senior, Young Riders, and Junior Champions will also be selected.

The sports thrill will hit the pick during the summer holidays. The first weekend of August will see the start of the European Pony Championships in three disciplines: Jumping, Dressage, and Eventing, and the Strzegom Summer Tour event will take place over the last weekend of August. Riders will compete in the Intro class and short format competitions from two to four stars. This event is especially recommended for pairs making their debut at a higher level than they competed so far.

The season finale will be the Strzegom October Festival, during which competitions of one to four stars in both formats will be held.  At the same time, the European Youth Eventing Masters tournament will be held, which will determine individual and team winners in the youth categories. The event will take place in mid-October.

British Rider Victorious in the 4* Class in Strzegom

Libby Seed with the 10-year-old Heartbreaker Star Quality was the winner of the CCI4*-L, the highest ranked class of Strzegom October Festival.

Libby Seed took the lead after a smooth cross-country, although she crossed the finish line six seconds late. That still made her jump up from fourth after dressage. She went over the showjumping clear on the fences, with only 0,8 for time. Second place went to her compatriot James Sommerville with Talent, and Miroslav Trunda from the Czech Republic was third riding Shutterflyke.

Victory in the 3*-L after clear cross-country and jumping rounds belonged to a veteran of Strzegom’s events – Germany’s Andreas Dibowski riding Calahari. Vanessy Bölting with Ready To Go W was second, and Swedish rider Sara Algotsson Ostholt with Dynamite Jack was third.

Female riders dominated the podium in the 2*-L. The winner was Australia’s Katja Weimann with Jeu de Blanc W before German riders Julia Schatzmann with Golden Evo KPSC and Anna Lena Schaaf with Lorsandos.

Saturday’s cross-country rounds ended the rivalry in the short-format 3* and 4* classes. The podium went to German athletes in both. Anna Lena Schaaf riding Fairytale 39, the best one in the 4*, took the lead after dressage and did not lose it until the end. Sandra Auffarth with The Phantom of the Opera was sitting in 8th after the first trial, but a clear jumping round and only some time penalties in the XC secured her second place. Antonia Baumgart riding Lamango had some time faults and had to settle for third.

Libussa Lübbeke with Darcy F was victorious in the 3* after going through the cross-country only 4 seconds late. Pia Münker with Cascada was second, and Sandra Auffarth with Viamant du Matz was third.

The win in the CCI1*-Intro, after flawless showjumping and cross-country runs, belonged to Poland’s Karolina Miś with Go Jack.

The European Youth Eventing Masters was dominated by Germans, who took the win in all age categories, both as a team and individually. Julia Warner with Clara, Christina Schöniger riding Schoensgreen Continus, Brandon Schäfer-Gehrau with Parkmore Emper, and Felicia Von Baath with Quantum E were the best in the young rider category. The last one of them was also the winner individually.

The best junior team was Emily Roberg with Donna Lena MV, Jule Krueger with D’Artagnan 216, Isabel Kristin Dalecki riding Caruso JH, and Hedda Vogler with Niagara de Champenotte. Individually the best result belonged to Sophia Rössel with Nickel 21.

Neele Hinrichsen riding Golden Gadget, Pita Schmid with Sietlands Catrina, Amelie Nottmeier with Katleen 3, and Merle Hoffmann na Penny Lane WE were the winners of the pony class, while Hoffmann also took home the individual best score.

Strzegom October Festival was a jubilee 50th international show at the hippodrome in Morawa. 12 classes were played out, with almost 400 pairs from 23 countries.

It’s Go Time for Strzegom October Festival

Almost 400 horses, 12 classes, top athletes, and a chance to celebrate – Strzegom October Festival, a jubilee 50th edition of the international competitions in Strzegom starts on Wednesday 13 October at the hippodrome in Morawa.

Strzegom October Festival traditionally finishes the eventing season at Stragona Equestrian Centre. This year it will be a unique event, as it marks the 50th international competition in Morawa. 12 classes will be played out, including the youth categories: ponies, juniors, and young riders will battle it out in the European Youth Eventing Masters. The arenas in Morawa will host almost 400 horse and rider combinations, representing 23 nations.

The entry list includes some of the world’s top eventers, including Ingrid Klimke, the double European Champion, world champion Sandra Auffarth, and the Olympic silver medalist Sara Algotsson-Ostholt.

Strzegom October Festival starts on Wednesday with dressage tests. Cross-country, the most exciting part of the equestrian triathlon, will be played out over three days. The final trials and prizegiving ceremonies will take place on Saturday and Sunday.

Entry and parking are free of charge. The audiences will also have a chance to cheer on their favourites during the cross-country livestream, via Eventing.strzegomhorsetrials.pl, Clipmyhorse.tv, and Facebook.

German Nicolai Aldinger Wins 4* Class in Strzegom

Nicolai Aldinger with the 11-year-old Timmo was the best in the CCI4*-S, the highest ranked class during Strzegom Summer Tour. Poland’s Julia Gillmaier won the CCI3*-S.

Nicolai Aldinger, who was in the third position after two trials, secured his win with a good round in the cross-country. He went clear over the fences and only 3 seconds over the optimum time. Second place went to Yoshiaki Oiwa riding Tullyoran Cruise JRA. The Japanese rider was tenth after dressage, had a clear round in the jumping, and added some time points in the XC. Third place went to Merel Blom (NED) with Crossborder Radar Love N.O.P.

Polish athlete Mateusz Kiempa, riding Lassban Radovix, was second after dressage and jumping, but added time penalties in the cross-country to his result and it cost him the podium. The pair finished fourth.

Riders from 15 countries competed at the event with over 250 horses. Four international short-format classes and five national ones were played out.

The CCI3*-S ended with the victory of Julia Gillmaier (POL) with Red Dream Princes, whose clear round in the cross-country made her jump up from the eighth position after two trials. The next two places went to German riders. Jan Matthias with Wilbur Larch, the overnight leader, crossed the finish line with time faults, which cost him the win and he had to settle for second. Third place went to Lara Krueger with Lara’s Little Loretta.

The winner of the two-star class was Yoshiaki Oiwa with Calle 44. The Japanese rider took the lead in the dressage and kept it until the end – even despite points for time in the cross-country. Second place went to Merel Blom from the Netherlands riding Denim. Daria Kobiernik (POL) with the Polish-bred Chodów, after clear runs in the jumping and XC, finished third.

The best rider of the CCI1*-Intro was Germany’s Peter Thomsen, who took the first place with Ibsen 27 and second with Portofino 81. Third place went to his compatriot Isabella Von Roeder riding Bob.

FEI Pony European Championships: Triple Gold for France, New World Record by German Athlete

The French were unrivaled in the FEI Pony European Championships in Strzegom, taking home the gold medals in showjumping and eventing.

Eventing

Both individual and team gold medals in eventing went to riders from France. Germany took silver, and Ireland finished with the bronze. The team Top 3 remained the same after dressage and throughout the next two trials.

The French squad was represented by: Zoe Ballot with Voltair De Lalande, Valentin Quittet Eslan with Winnetou, Mathieu Cuomo with Celeste Du Montier, and the best one in the team, Mae Rinaldi riding Boston Du Verdon, who won the individual gold medal. She took the lead after dressage, kept it through the cross-country in spite of time faults, and went clear in the jumping. The pair finished with the result of 28,4.

“I’m very happy with my individual victory, but also for the whole team. It’s a dream come true. Boston is a great pony; he is amazing in all three trials; he’s always very concentrated and I love him!” said the new European champion.

Silver went to Ireland’s Ben Connors with Cornafest Fred, who was clear in both the cross-country and showjumping, to finish with 30,03. Sophie Weening from the Netherlands took bronze riding Hip Hop – 30,04.

Dressage

German riders were victorious for the third time, as they won the team and individual classifications, and went for the gold in the freestyle. One of them also established a new world record.

The individual medalists repeated their success during the Freestyle and took home double medals. The judges were once again most impressed with the ride of Germany’s Rose Oatley with Daddy Moon. The rider, finishing with the result of 89,700%, broke the world record established in 2015. Silver went to her teammate Antonia Roth with Daily Pleasure WE (85,090%), and bronze to Sophia Boje Obel Jorgensen from Denmark with Adriano B – 83,050%. Polish rider Veronica Pawluk with D’Artagnan 187 finished eighth, with the result of 76,970%.

Showjumping

There was no shortage of sport emotions in the individual final, the last rivalry at the event. After two rounds, the well-deserved gold medal went to the only rider that went clear over all of the 5 courses of the Championships – Jeanne Hirel from France riding Vedouz De Nestin.

Her teammate Marie Ann Sullivan with Ken Van Orchid finished second, with three penalty points. This confirms the great form of the French, who are also going home with a team gold.

The bronze medal was determined by a two-horse jump-off, which ended with the victory of Siebe Leemans with Voodstock de L’Astree.

160 young athletes competed during the FEI Pony European Championships in Strzegom, representing 21 nations.

FEI Pony European Championships: German Dressage Riders Are Double Medalists

Rose Oatley took the individual gold medal after a great test with the 11-year-old Daddy Moon. German riders proved their amazing form, as they stood on the highest step of the podium both after the team and individual classes.

“I can’t really describe what happened today. I’m overwhelmed with my feelings. My pony was just amazing in the test. I can’t believe that we are now the European champions!” said the rider.

The silver medal went to the winner’s teammate, Antonia Roth riding Daily Pleasure WE, and Denmark’s Sophia Boje Obel Jorgensen with Adriano B took the bronze.

Polish rider Veronica Pawluk with D’Artagnan 187 finished in seventh place out of 63 competitors.

Eventing

Saturday’s cross-country trial did not bring any changes to the top of the team leaderboard. The French still hold on to the best result with 96,4, Germany sits in second with 101,2, and the Irish are third with 116,3.

Mae Rinaldi from France held on to her lead after dressage with Boston du Verdon, even after time faults – now riding with 28,4.

Irish rider Ben Connors with Cornafest Fred went up to the second position (from the 11th) after a clear round inside the time; their result is now 30,03. Sophie Weening from the Netherlands is now third riding Hip Hop, with 30,04.
