American Hobby Horse Competition Hosted Each Saturday in July at TIEC

Tryon Resort is bringing back Hobby Horse for the summer! Join us every Saturday night in July in the green space next to the General Store. The Hobby Horse Summer Series Final will be held in Tryon Stadium before the “Saturday Night Lights” Grand Prix on July 27.

About the American Hobby Horse Series:

Hobby Horse is the safe and fun alternative to horseback riding, and participation is FREE. Competitors age 14 and under can win real horse show ribbons by competing over miniature replicas of real Show Jumping courses. Participants are encouraged to be creative with designing your Hobby Horse or with attire. Don’t have a hobby horse of your own? The General Store on property has a variety of options available to purchase.

How the Competition Works:

Check-in begins at 6pm each Saturday for pre-registered participants, with courses posted for each division and the jumps available for practice. Competition begins at 6:30pm and begins with the 6 & Under divisions.

Divisions are designated by age and various jump heights as follows:

  • Ages 6 & Under: Cross-rails, 18in.
  • Ages 7-8: Cross-rails, 18in.
  • Ages 9-11: 18in., 2ft.
  • Ages 12-14: 2ft., 2ft. 6in.

Participants may compete in all of height levels within their age division. If there are more than 12 entries in a class, it will be split into two classes.

Special awards will be given each week to the Best Turned Out Rider, Best Hobby Horse, and Best Sportsmanship. These awards will be based on the unique style of the horse and the rider’s outfits which will be chosen by the announcer throughout the duration of the competition, so all competitors are encouraged to remain and support fellow competitors for the entirety of the event.

To participate, competitors must sign up for this free event online and have a guardian sign the waiver form. Entries MUST be in by 12 p.m. on the day of competition in order to participate. For the waiver form and to register, click here.
