Editorial -What Kind of Forage is Safer? I gathered information from SaferGrass.org for this article because of the hay shortage that is facing most of us in the South (and other areas of the US) due to a drought. SaferGrass.org is a small research company run by Kathryn Watts, a professional agricultural contract researcher and consultant. She has been conducting studies and presenting clinics all over the country on carbohydrate content of forage so she can help end the pain and suffering of chronically laminitic horses and ponies. She will be a speaker at the Fourth International Conference on Laminitis and Diseases of the Foot on November 2-4, 2007 in West Palm Beach, FL.
In North Florida, we had not been able to get the lower-cost Coastal Bermuda hay since last winter (2006), so we have been getting Timothy/Alfalfa (T&A) to feed our horses, which is twice the cost of the coastal hay. July 15th was the date when we got the first coastal hay shipment. So, I bought some wheat hay to try. Of course, I searched the internet to find out about this hay before I fed it to my easy-keeper Clydesdale/TB cross mare and my gelding ex TB racehorse. When I first got the wheat hay, I gave a large handful mixed in with the T&A, plus a small handful of plain Alfalfa to my 'easy-keeper' mare - she went for the wheat hay over the alfalfa which is usually her 'treat'! Future and Freedomhall - Love Triumphs! Freedomhall and Future are Dogwood Sport Horses' stallion and mare who have been living together in their natural environment as a herd on 60 acres. For twenty years Sherry Smith has imported champion dressage European warmbloods as a foundation for the dressage and jumping stock she breeds.
Dogwood Farm followed standard breeding practices until they bred a magnificent black registered Westfalen stallion colt that they named Freedomhall. From birth he exhibited a particularly calm, sweet temperament, and Sherry and her sister, Monica Flynn, made a bold decision. They had always abhorred the constricted lives that breeding stallions live. And, of course, owners of expensive horses dread the possibility of injury resulting from a breeding incident. But they raised Freedom with the idea he would lead a natural life for a stallion. Read more>
Congratulations to Sherry and Freedom - he got an 80% in his 5 yr old materiale
class. Rridden by Anke Boersma who only had him in training for
two weeks before the show!
And at the Breed Show in Conyers, GA on 9/15-16/07, he was Grand Champion Stallion and is qualified
to go to the 2007 Region 3 finals.
With him is his son (they live together in the pasture). He took all 3
ribbons off and tried to stomp them on the ground
like he was trying to "save" Freedom from them.

The First Coast Invitational Show Jumping event is coming to Jacksonville November 29 – December 2, 2007 at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. The First Coast Invitational is a vision of Bill Joyce of Shadow Rock Farm to bring the excitement of Show Jumping to the everyday person as a spectator event.
Show Jumping has been an Olympic Event since the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, and the Equestrian Events are the only Olympic events in which men and women compete directly against each other. And although Show Jumping is European in origin, the United States is considered a 'World Power' in the sport.
The First Coast Invitational intends to expand on the popularity of the sport. This year The First Coast Invitational is a unique inaugural event bringing together two equestrian worlds at their highest level of professional competition. A blending of two cultures, Show Jumping – the most exciting event in the horse show world today and Bull Riding, by far the most dangerous and thrilling event in Rodeo competition.
This years event will support the efforts of Builders Care, a not for profit division of the Northeast Florida Builders Association. Read more>
