Calgary, AB – July 16, 2010 – Recently, top trainer Diane Carney traveled with Richard Rinehart and riders of Telluride Farm to compete at the Spruce Meadows Tournament. The riders competed during the “Canada One” week, which began July 1 and ran through July 4, 2010, and the “North American” week, held July 7-11, 2010. Rinehart, Caitie Hope, Michael Burnett, Virginia Bartholomay, and Morgan Dvorkin all scored top ribbons and had the opportunity to ride in the Spruce Meadows victory gallops.
Rinehart earned a victory during “Canada One” with Iron in the 1.20m Open Jumper Welcome Class. He also showed Total Touch, owned by Kathleen Hope to a second and fourth place finish in the 1.20m Open Jumper classes. “Richard is a brilliant rider and might not have taken the big step to compete at Spruce Meadows without this opportunity,” noted Carney. “If you can ride and understand horsemanship then you will leave Spruce Meadows encouraged and fulfilled.” Rinehart was the winner of the Maxine Beard Award in 2001.
Caitie Hope earned the opportunity to participate in numerous victory gallops aboard La Paz, Total Touch, and Pepe. Hope and La Paz took home a first place prize in the $1,000 CN Amateur Welcome class, as well as multiple third place ribbons throughout the competition. Aboard Total Touch, Hope scored a third place ribbon and a sixth place ribbon in the 1.30 Junior/Amateur Jumper classes. Hope showed Pepe in the 1.10m Amateur Jumper classes and was awarded a second place ribbon, two fourth place ribbons, and an eighth place ribbon.
Pepe is owned by Virginia Bartholomay, who competed with Symphatico III for the first time at an international competition. The pair scored the fifth place honors during “Canada One” in the $1,000 CN Amateur Jumper. Morgan Dvorkin also shared the ride aboard Symphatico III and had consistently nice trips throughout the two weeks of competition.
Iron’s owner, Michael Burnett, had his own success aboard the talented mount. The pair competed in the Junior/Amateur 1.30m Jumper classes and scored consistent top placings, including two third place ribbons. He also earned second place honors competing in the 1.25m Open Jumper class competing alongside the top professionals in the country.
Carney attributes the success of “Team Telluride” to incredible teamwork and dedicated preparation, which is assisted by Greg Franklin’s Canterbury Farm. She has been traveling to Spruce Meadows to compete for 20 years and she knows what it takes to be successful. “To compete at Spruce Meadows riders need to have horsemanship skills, psychological toughness, competitive toughness, and a little luck doesn’t hurt,” she explained. “Spruce Meadows is not about the height of the fences, but just the overall experience. The riders already had the skills to jump the jumps and now they were able to succeed with confidence on an international stage.”
The horses and riders all returned home in excellent condition thanks to the hard work of Carney with grooms Audrey Symiwitz and Aly Qutib. Telluride Farm will now be traveling to compete at the Kentucky Summer Horse Shows and the Traders Pont Hunt Charity Horse Show.
Carney, a USEF “r” Hunter/Equitation Licensed Official, is based out of Hampshire, IL, at her hunter/jumper show stable, Telluride Farm. She has been both an active participant and influential trainer in the hunter and jumper community for many years. Her contributions to the industry extend to the many clinics that she teaches every year, in addition to those that she hosts annually for U.S. Show Jumping Chef d’Equipe George H. Morris and top hunter/jumper trainer Don Stewart Jr. Most recently Carney was voted Illinois Hunter/Jumper Horse Person of the Year for 2008.
