Lausanne (SUI), 29 May 2012 – The OIE and FEI called for new protocols for the movement of “high health, high performance” sport horses at the 80th General Session of the World Assembly of World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) Delegates in Paris last week.

The OIE and FEI are continuing their collaboration to define and create a sub-population of horses to reflect the high health status of top level, international equestrian sport horses.

The recognition of a lower disease risk among these horses would better facilitate their cross-border movement by national Veterinary Services.

“As a result of the high increase in international equestrian sport, important constraints to the movement of horses have been revealed. It is clear that there is a need to define the criteria for healthy, high performance horses as a sub-population, which reflects the low level of disease risk involved in their movement,” explained OIE Director General, Dr Bernard Vallat, as he opened the General Session on Sunday 20 May.

Lausanne (SUI), 31 October 2011 – The joint World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) and FEI conference focusing on modernising the conditions of movement of horses within South America has called for the removal of outdated or unjustified import and export barriers that are stifling the growth of equestrian sport.

The need for greater understanding of the health certification and quarantine requirements for horses competing at national and international levels was also highlighted at the conference, which was held last week in Guadalajara (MEX) during the Pan American Games and attended by 80 government ministers, international veterinarians and other specialists.

Speakers from the OIE, government representatives from South America and the FEI tackled the justification of some of the current restrictions imposed on healthy competition horses when travelling between South American countries, and the impact this is having on the development of equestrian sport across the region.

FEI and OIE to Host Joint Regional Conference on International Movement of Horses in South America

Lausanne (SUI), 15 August 2011 – The FEI and the World Animal Health Organisation (OIE) will jointly host a conference in Guadalajara (MEX) on 24 October focusing on modernising international movement of horses in South America.

The conference will also allow participants to attend the 16th Pan American Games, which are taking place in Guadalajara on 14-30 October.

With the mandate to improve animal health and welfare worldwide, the OIE is recognised as the reference standard-setting international organisation by the World Trade Organisation.

The current use of OIE standards allows the safe movement of horses while avoiding unjustified sanitary barriers.

This unique conference will bring together a variety of experts from the OIE, the FEI, representatives from the public sector including Veterinary Services and all relevant stakeholders from the private sector.

Key areas that will be discussed include best approaches to safely moving horses internationally, in particular to competitions in compliance with international standards. An overview of the issues within the region’s growing equine horse industry will also be given.
