Captive Wild Horses at Risk of Heat Stroke

Right now the majority of captive wild horses are at risk of heat stroke and death because there is no shade during the hot summer months at Palomino Valley Center (Reno) and other BLM holding facilities in the U.S.A.

On June 9th, Senator Mark Manendo and Anne Novak, Executive Director of Protect Mustangs, officially requested shade for the wild horses and burros at Palomino Valley Center near Reno and elsewhere to ensure the welfare of these treasured equids. Their request for shade was refused and the mitigation offered was unsuccessful because shade is needed.

Campaigns such as #Shade4Mustangs, “Gimme Shelter”, Palomino Relief Project, and #GiveUsShelter have launched because the American people are up in arms.

We ask that you intervene to bring emergency shade and care to prevent the deaths of our American icons of freedom before it is too late.

Trapped in the corrals the 1,800 wild horses and burros at Palomino Valley are enduring a horrible heat wave now and their condition looks worse each day.

We thank you for your compassion for our national treasures — native wild horses and burros who need your help. They need your urgent attention to survive the summer — captive in the federally funded corrals. They need #Shade4Mustangs and burros.

New Report Shines a Harsh Spotlight on the Government’s Wild Horse and Burro Program

The National Academy of Science (NAS) recently released a report on the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Wild Horse and Burro program and determined that the program can’t continue “business as usual.” The report provided numerous suggestions for improvement and found that the BLM has not used scientifically rigorous methods to estimate population, model effects of management actions, or to assess forage on rangelands. Further, the report found that the current practice of rounding up and removing wild horses actually leads to higher rates of population growth, rather than curbing it. Please click here for more information and to join IDA in asking Sec. Jewell to carefully consider NAS recommendations and immediately stop all roundups.

Official Wild Horse Report Comes Out on Wednesday; We Need Your Help TODAY

Dear Supporters & Friends,
We have asked you to voice your opinions over the last several years in support of America’s wild horses. This time marks a pinnacle in how the Wild Horse & Burro Program is going to move forward. If you haven’t taken action with us before, please let today be the time you do.

On Wednesday, the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) is going to release its report on the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Wild Horse and Burro Program. The new Interior Secretary, Sally Jewell, has said that she’s waiting for this report to decide how the program should be handled going forward.

The BLM has paid for this report and it’s been clear from all sides waiting to read it that it will formulate the direction of every aspect of how our horses are managed from here on out. We hope that it is a positive step forward for our wild ones. We are uniting together, as always, against slaughter and against federal roundups. Please join us and voice your own opinions before it’s too late.

Sincerely,
Madeleine Pickens & the Saving America’s Mustangs’ Foundation

Oklahoma Passes Legislation Approving Horse Slaughter

The Mustang family pictured here travels between the federal land in the Pine Nut Herd Management Area (HMA) and a rural area outside Carson City, NV. The horses have lived in this area for at least 40 years. Originally the band had 50 members, but it’s down to just six wild horses currently due to the scheduled BLM removals. The local community and leaders love these horses and advocates have pleaded for the BLM to build a fence to keep the horses in their designated range. The agency regularly builds fencing for livestock, but has refused to build a fence for this purpose. On Wednesday, February 27th, the BLM captured 5 out of the six horses in this band and are trying to gather the last lead mare that is out on the range still calling to her group. Please take the time to write to the BLM and tell them to work with this community and leave the band where they are and not send them to short-term holding facilities.

URGENT

Oklahoma has 2 bills that have passed committee which allow for the slaughter of horses, and possibly wild mustangs, in the state. Oklahoma House Bill HB 1999 allows for horse slaughterhouses to open up and slaughter our wonderful horses for human consumption.

Also, Senate Bill SB 735 makes it legal to have and export horse meat for human consumption. NO PUBLIC input has been allowed and they have both passed the committee with the potential to be voted into law AT ANY TIME.

Here is the contact form to write to the Oklahoma Governor, Mary Fallin, and tell her you do NOT support this!

Saving America’s Mustangs Endorses Appointment of Rep. Grijalva as New Secretary of the Interior

Congressman Raul Grijalva’s name is being floated as a possible appointment to be the next Secretary of the Interior, and Saving America’s Mustangs thinks he is the best choice to lead this important federal agency. It would be a bold pick that would dramatically change how our federal government treats our federal lands. Will you join with other protectors of our environment and ask President Obama to Appoint Raul Grijalva as Secretary of the Interior?

Raul Grijalva’s leadership on the House Natural Resources Committee has demonstrated how he is a champion of clean air, clean water, renewable energy, comprehensive mining reform and environmental conservation. He is the type of bold leader that we need at the Department of the Interior. We need his leadership to better conserve our public lands for generations to come. His appointment will send a strong signal to special interest groups and well-funded lobbyists: the days of influencing our environment with cronyism and fat checks are over. TAKE ACTION here today.

Take Action to Preserve Wyoming’s Wild Horses!

Wild horses in Adobe Town. Photo by Carol Walker

BLM is planning another destructive roundup of Wyoming’s wild horses. This time the agency has set its sights on the Adobe Town and Salt Wells herds in the southwestern section of the state — some of the largest remaining in the West.

In addition, BLM plans to sell oil and gas development leases within the herd areas without any analysis as to how it will impact the wild horses.

For the second time in three years these two herds would be forced to endure a helicopter stampede. The reason? Livestock. The Rock Springs Grazing Association (RGSA) leases the private and public portions of the checkerboard lands (1 square mile public, 1 square mile private) along the I-80 corridor. RSGA filed a lawsuit last year demanding removal of all the wild horses in the checkerboard lands. This would result in wiping out the vast majority of Wyoming’s wild horses, including many Adobe Town horses and nearly all of the Salt Wells bands.

Attend NYC Premiere of the Film Saving America’s Horses: A Nation Betrayed

December 1, 2012 — New York, NY – New York’s QUAD Cinema, IMA Studios, WFLF Humanion Films and The Triumph Project are proud to present the provocative new documentary Saving America’s Horses: A Nation Betrayed, produced, written and directed by filmmaker Katia Louise.

Featuring revealing interviews with distinguished veterinarians, trainers, academics, investigators, policymakers and members of the equine community, including Paul Sorvino, Linda Gray, Tippi Hedren, and Willie Nelson, the film addresses a question that recently prompted the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, to threaten to “punch out” a reporter who asked him if “any changes need to take place in the system in terms of safeguarding America’s wild and domestic horses.”

Louise and her organization, the Wild for Life Foundation, ask the same question in her investigation of the economic, environmental, public health and ethical issues surrounding the slaughter of both wild and domestic horses for their meat. As she notes, the cost of round up and removal of wild horses from the public lands and holding them long term continues to increase (now budgeted at more than $40 million a year).
