Adam Prudent Rides Vasco to the Win in the 1.30-1.35m Class at Wellington Turf Tour

Wellington, FL – March 25, 2015 – The final Wednesday of the Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour was incredibly successful, with both rings staying busy throughout the day. Adam Prudent topped the first 1.30-1.35m class riding Vasco for Plain Bay Sales. Prudent brought the horse over in order to prepare for the Finale Grand Prix on Friday.

“It was a great course as usual at The Ridge. I love showing here because you always get to ride on the grass. I have won a couple classes here, and it’s always a pleasure to come. This is one of my speed horses; I brought him over this week to give him a bit of a break from WEF. He loves the grass, so he’s very easy to ride on this big open field.”

Prudent posted a very fast time of 46.192 seconds to beat the early class leader Oliver McCarthy’s time of 46.235 seconds on the course designed by Nick Granat and Eric Hasbrouck.   McCarthy had the ride on Crossfire 10 for McLain Ward. Ansgar Holtgers finished in third on his own Wisconsin, and fifth on Quick Petite Folie. Darrin Dliin claimed the fourth place finish with Tennyson for Susan Grange. Rounding out the top six was Linda Sheridan, riding her own Vantina HPF.

In the second class, Lauren Hough rode Olivia Pirovano’s Spirit to the top prize with a time of 43.626 seconds. Christine McCrea, the first double clear of the day, stopping the clock at 45.861 seconds, finished in second aboard Ronaldo De La Pomme for Candy Tribble. Conor Swail clinched the third spot with Game Ready for Susan Grange. Eric Flameng saw a great deal of success with Balous Boy, who just moved up to the 1.30-1.35 class last week, with a fourth place finish. Cassandra Herman rode SCCA Ventures’ Casis to a fifth. Darrin Dliin rounded out the top six placings with another of Grange’s horses, Dillinger.

In addition to the resurgence of the traditional horse shows, a tradition of breeding and producing top caliber horses has been very evident with some of the competitors during the turf tour. One owner who has an incredible amount of time and knowledge invested into producing such top horses is Susan Grange.

Throughout the turf tour, there has been a set of names that are consistently on the top of the results chart. Grange and her team of riders of Brady Hayes, Darrin Dliin and Conor Swail have attended ten of the twelve weeks of competition during the Turf Tour, garnering significant ribbons along the way. Grange was eager to express her support for the Turf Tour.

“We love it here. It’s a great opportunity to show our young horses and get them out on a big field with nice jumps and good footing. It’s just much more inviting for the young horses. We bring a lot of them over for that reason. They can only handle so much at the other show; it’s nice to swap it out every now and then.”

Her unique custom shirts stand out, with half of the Canadian flags colors on one side and half of the Irish flags on the other, representing both her home country and that of her Irish rider’s, Swail’s. It’s quite clear that she is very proud of what her team is accomplishing through classical, correct training of very gifted young horses.

Grange produces her own horses and purchases promising young talent to bring up through the ranks with the help of her outstanding riders. She has been producing horses since she was 16.

“I do a lot of breeding; a lot of these are my homebreds. It’s the only way to go. It’s too expensive to go buying grand prix horses. Ultimately we want to get up to the grand prix with them, so we start with nice young ones, go with them, and if they look like they’ll make the very top we keep them and if not, we sell them as really nice amateur horses. I love the young horses. I love watching them and developing them, and training them at home.”

She elaborated, “To me, it’s not as much fun (to just buy a made horse). If you buy a horse, you expect it to go in the ring and be good. But the young ones, you remember them as babies and you think, ‘Wow, this horse is actually doing this now!’ and it’s a whole different level of fun for me. I like to work with them at home a lot, developing them. All of my riders don’t live anywhere near me. Darrin Dliin is from Calgary, Conor Swail of course is in Ireland, and Ian Millar lives in Perth. Between Brady Hayes and me, I set up the gymnastics and we train them all to have them ready for the riders. It makes both of us feel great when they go well for the riders.”

Dliin explained his role in the Lothlorien team. “I first started just doing the young ones and brought them along. We won several young horse finals with her horses, mostly homebred. Those are mostly grown up, so now I’ve got a whole new batch to bring along. We each them how to jump, teach them how to canter, and just how to do it on their own. That lets them develop the confidence so they know what to do without us, basically.”

The young horses have a bit of a break following the long Florida circuit. “After the winter here they have a big break, and then I go back in May to start them back up again for Spruce. They’re at Spruce for six weeks, then they have a break again. We do some local shows and get them organized for the Young Horse Finals in Toronto.”

Like Grange, Dliin was quite vocal about his praise for The Ridge. “I really want to say a big thank you to George and Nona for bringing this to Wellington. It’s such a welcome addition it’s so nice to get the horses out here, especially for us, because Spruce is such a big part of our summer. We get to get ready here so they’re ready to go when we get there. Spruce is so big and open, but after being here they’re ready for it. This is a great thing.”

Swail, The Turf Tour’s leading rider this year, has really enjoyed working with Grange and her program. “She has a great team that does a great job with the horses as young horses. I come in and ride the older ones when they’re ready to do a bit of a higher level. For me it’s great that Sue and Ariel and their family have a great interest; they’re very devoted to the sport. It’s great for me that they’re so involved.”

He has high hopes for the future, especially given the quality of the horses that are being produced. “She’s a great owner and I thought we’d be a good match and so far so good – we’re both trying to go in the same direction and we’re being quite successful in everything we’re doing. I think in the future we’ll be getting even more successful as time goes on.”

Brady Hayes is an integral part of the team with the horses at home, but he is quick to give credit where it is due. “The management of Lori Green and the grooms, and everyone involved – they really put a lot of hard work into what goes on every day at Lothlorien Farm.”

Hayes does much of the behind-the-scenes work, riding them at home and flatting the horses at shows. He flats the young ones just under saddle and spends a lot of time doing gymnastics with the horses, something Grange is a very firm believer in.

“I’m very fortunate to be in the position that I’m in; there’s a lot of great people around that I’ve learned, and am learning, a lot from. I think every day we work with the horses as individuals and try to accomplish what we can. It’s nothing but a great learning experience. I just can’t say enough about Sue and Ariel and her family. They’ve given me a very wonderful opportunity, and to work with some of these very top riders in the farm has been nothing but great for the past few years.”

Hayes was incredibly enthusiastic about his support for the Turf Tour.

“I can’t say enough about The Ridge. It’s a great atmosphere, especially for the younger horses. It’s so open. You can take all the time in the world to get ready. If you go in and have one or two fences down there’s always the second course up. You can go back in and make sure you get it done the right way, whereas other venues you can’t always do that; it’s kind of a one shot kind of deal. I think the footing is always fabulous; the fences are just enough, not overly impressive to the point of being scary, but not just poles on the ground.”

He continued, “They’ve done a super job; they let you have refreshments and food, and it’s a very nice atmosphere. The course designers and Nona and George who put it on are nothing but very generous and it’s a very well put together venue, for sure!”

Friday will be the last day of competition for the 2015 Turf Tour. IPC will be hosting a champagne brunch to celebrate the conclusion of the series. The highlight of the day will be the Grand Prix Finale, running from 8:00 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. with an award presentation at 4:30 p.m. The 1.40m Grand Prix will offer just under $25,000 in prize money, the largest purse offered by The Ridge at Wellington. With some of the top names during the Tour bringing their most competitive horses, Friday’s action is sure to be nail biting. The second ring will offer low and medium schooling jumpers. At the conclusion of competition on Friday, March 27th, the Turf Tour will name the Leading Rider for the twelve-week series. Current standings have Irish rider Conor Swail at the top of the rankings.

The winner of the Leading Rider Award will receive an incredible prize of an Equestrian International Polo Club Palm Beach membership. This exclusive membership is typically available through invitation only and is highly sought after. Valued at $6,000, the membership starts January 2016 and is good through mid-April, the duration of the winter circuit.

Alex Granato Victorious with Zenith Dance in The Ridge at Wellington Week 11 Grand Prix

Wellington, FL – March 21, 2015 – Alex Granato has proven again and again that he is a force to be reckoned with when he shows up at The Ridge at Wellington’s Turf Tour, and today was no exception as he topped a field of 23 in the 1.40 Grand Prix.

He brought with him the same two horses he was successful with on Wednesday to compete in the Grand Prix today, Page Tredennick’s Cesario 15 and Zenith Dance, also owned by Tredennick. Serving as a perfect preparation for next week’s finals, Granato posted two double clear rounds. Only 5 others would join him with fault free scores throughout the day, with not a single pair laying down a faster track.

Granato improved on his results from Wednesday with Cesario 15, where the combination had an unlucky four faults in each of the first rounds of the two 1.30-1.35m classes. Today, the duo was the first double clear of the day as the second team in the ring, with a time of 40.760. The time would not hold up for long, with Granato returning immediately to beat his own time with his second ride. Cesario 15’s time would prove challenging to beat for the other competitors, however, and would end the day in the third place spot.

Zenith Dance had a very impressive outing on Wednesday, claiming the victory in the 1.30-1.35m with a margin of nearly three seconds over second place. Granato also won the 1.30-1.35m with this horse during the first and fifth week of competition. Today the pair continued their winning ways, capturing the top spot with a time of 38.088. When asked about one special trait of the horse, Granato was quick to compliment his mount, known as Whitey in the barn.

“For a pony sized jumper, he’s got a tremendously large character. He’s a great personality in the barn, nice to be around, whether you’re working with him on the ground, or riding him. He has a little bit of an attitude just because he’s pony sized, I think.”

Josh Dolan was quick to agree. “You know the horse in Tangled? That’s Whitey.”

Granato concurred, “We do call him the Disney pony. He’s always in a good mood; he’s a happy character to be around. ”

Granato delayed his trip up to compete in Ocala as late as he dared to, in order to support the Turf Tour, and he made his time well worth it. Both horses put in fantastic efforts over the course designed by Nick Granat. This talented Grand Prix rider is clearly ambitious and has the work ethic to back it up. Granato and Josh Dolan immediately hit the road for Ocala after competing, where he has several other horses showing. The Colorado based rider has been keeping up a very busy schedule, with his top horses spread out and competing at the best venues in Florida for the winter circuits.

While many riders tried their hand at catching the speedy partnership of Granato and Zenith Dance, none were successful. The closest time was Christine McCrea, riding Candy Tribble’s Ronaldo De La Pomme. She stopped the clock at 39.650, less than two seconds off the leading time. Sarah Wayda rode Faroukh to a very tidy jump off time of 41.629, good enough for fourth. Debbie Stephens stopped the clock at 41.814 with Swagger to finish fifth. Nina Fagerstrom completed the course in a time of 42.502 with Cover Girl to end in sixth. Alise Okin and Hitchcock Vd Broekkant navigated the track in a conservative time of 44.670, claiming seventh. Penny Brennan wrapped up the top eight ribbons with the fastest four faults. Her time of 38.093 would have been good enough for second, but a heartbreaking rail in the jump off at the plank, fence 8, dropped her and Sun Tzu in the standings.

The second ring was a happening place to be today, seeing more than fifty trips in the various divisions. The most popular class of the day was the $3000 NAL Junior/Amateur Owner Classic. Kiva Iscol rode her own Alias to the win out of the field of 18.

“I got him three years ago. He’s just kind of a quirky horse that needs his program. When he’s in his program, he’s just a delight. He’s just there for me. Even though he’s spooky, I trust him because he’s always going to go over the jump. I love him to death – he’s my baby!”

She raved about the course, also designed by Nick Granat. “It was great – it was a lot of fun. There were some nice options out there, like the first line you could do in 5 or 6, or I even saw some 7s. The bending lines were the same thing; I’ve seen a lot of different variety in the rides, which made it great for the jump off. With him, I knew that I could open him up for the five down the first line and still turn back, so it was a lot of fun.”

Iscol was very happy with her decision to come to the Turf Tour today. “Oh, IPC? What’s better than showing on a polo field? I mean I know it catches some riders off guard because there are no boundaries, but it’s just such a nice change of scenery. And to be out of a ring is fantastic. I think the horses enjoy it as much as the riders do. It’s such a friendly environment – everybody’s cheering for everybody else. What’s better than that?”

Peter Wylde Wins $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby for Second Consecutive Year

Wellington, FL – March 20, 2015 – It was déjà vu during the second annual Hunter Derby Days at The Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour. Peter Wylde has racked up an impressive list of accolades – including winning Olympic gold – but last year he attempted his first USHJA International Hunter derby, and won with Smoking Gun. Today, Wylde returned to the turf at The Ridge Farm to ride Candor 15 to first place finish in the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, clinching the championship title for his second consecutive year.

Prior to posing with the coveted rosette, Wylde and Candor 15 had to best an extremely competitive field of 28 horse and rider combinations over two rounds of competition.

Following the first, classic hunter round of competition, the top 12 horse and rider combinations returned in reverse order of their rankings for the second round of competition over the Rob Carey (CAN) designed course.

Wylde and Candor 15 made the biggest jump from the first round to the second round. Originally tied for the fourth place with Kelley Farmer and one of her multiple mounts, So to Speak. They earned 180 points from the judges for the first round, but came back to dominate in the handy. Using Candor’s scope and handiness, Wylde smoked the competition to earn 7 handy points from Panel A and 6 handy points from Panel B. Combined with four points added to the base scores of 95 and 91 for taking all high options, Wylde and Candor ended the day with the highest handy score of 207.

Candor 15 is a little different from other competitors. The grey gelding is a veteran of the Adult Jumper division, but in the fall of 2014, owner Dana Tourville asked if Wylde believed that Candor could do the hunters. Without hesitation, Wylde suggested taking a shot with the brave horse, winning two classes during their first show in the hunter ring at Saugerties and then kicking off the season with good ribbons in the High Performance Hunters and the sixth place finish for their efforts during the first of the 2015 $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby of The Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour.

“He has done really well,” Wylde smiled. “Basically, the plan was derbies for him. He is a superstar derby horse in my opinion, especially when you have high options. He turns beautifully; he is really handy and has a huge stride. Now, he has figured out what it means to be a hunter. He used to buck and play a little bit after the jumps because he was basically always going in jump offs and he was kind of foolish. Now he loves it. It’s funny – now it’s like he looks forward to going to the ring.”

It was his scope and handiness that allowed Wylde to leave no stone unturned on the derby field.

“We were hoping to peak for these two weeks. We did the earlier derby here in February, and it was a little early. We had only done one show with the high performance and he was sixth in that derby but he was still a little green to the hunter world, was brave and playful. He jumped the best he has jumped today. The higher jumps are the best for him.”

The handy course did not blatantly offer options for the riders. Carey designed the track so that the rider had to decide how tight they wanted to make the turns. For Wylde, it was the perfect handy course. Candor was able to land from a fence, make a tight turn and jump up to the big vertical that incurred several rubs, and knocked the first round’s third place horse and rider combination, Farmer and Joyful, out of their spot with a rail falling to the floor.

Farmer rode six entries in the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, with five of her mounts finishing in the top 12. Farmer ended the day with the second place overall aboard Symbolic, a new mount for the professional hunter rider. The Ridge Derby Days were his first hunter debut, adding a notch to his belt and already making a name only two weeks into competition with Farmer. They ended the competition with a score of 384 points, only three points behind Wylde and Candor 15.

Hannah Isop and Red Ryder, owned by Tracy Freels, rode to the third place finish with the overall score of 383.5, while Farmer picked up the fourth and fifth place finishes with Mindful and So To Speak, respectively. Rounding out the top six was Jennifer Bauersachs and For Love, owned by Spring Hill Farm, Inc.

Wylde now has his sights set on the derby at the final week of the Winter Equestrian Festival, as well as the Kentucky and Devon derby classes. He hopes to qualify for the 2015 USHJA International Hunter Derby Championship in Lexington, KY this summer.

“I must say that I seem to have inherited some really fancy hunters this circuit. I look forward to doing both-the jumper division, as I have always done, and the hunters. It is a discipline I really enjoy and appreciate. There are some really nice derbies coming up that we would like to do. It is a really great program.”

He plans on returning to The Ridge at Wellington’s Hunter Derby Days next year. “The footing was excellent. It is just soft enough, without being too soft. The footing is really natural and really good. I love the shape of the ring; it’s different and it’s interesting. It isn’t the same thing over and over again, it is great for the competition, and Candor really shined out there today.”

When you saw top hunter riders names such as Winn Alden, Evan Coluccio, and Hannah Isop, you knew that the competition for the National Derby today at The Ridge at Wellington was going to be anything but easy. Almost 30 of the top National derby horses took their turn at the track designed by Carey, completing two rounds in the sand arena surrounded by beautiful palm trees on the picturesque farm. At the conclusion of the competition, Winn Alden would ride Southern Arches, LLC’s Marshall to the top prize.

In the first round, Taylor St. Jacques was the third rider in the ring, riding Alejandro. Starting the day off with a bang, she posted an impressive score, taking all the high options to wind up with a score of 178. This score would hold up throughout the morning, finishing at the top of the first round scores. Unfortunately, an overenthusiastic Alejandro played a bit too hard landing off of one of the oxers in the handy round, resulting in the elimination of the top placed team.

Alden also took all of the high options in the first round to finish within striking distance of the lead with a score of 174. Penny Lombardo rode Too Much Fun over all the high options to come back just one point behind at 173.

The handy round saw competition heat up as the pairs returned to compete in reverse order. Every pair took all four high options, adding eight to their base scores.

Alden left little to chance, laying down another impressive trip to add 181 to her original score, totaling out at 355. Marshall floated around the ring, as the epitome of a top class hunter at the top of his game. Alden came to The Ridge today with the intention of making it a low-key day of competition.

“I showed him one day during circuit and that’s it. He has just been hanging out and came here to do it for the fun of it. He is just a perfect horse.”

She added, “We wanted to come over and just have fun since we haven’t really shown. One of my adults was also in it, so I thought it would be fun for her to do. We want to get him fit so he can do the international derby.”

Alden’s student, Brook Cole, would finish the day in 11th, riding her own Poetic Justis. Alden was very proud of Cole’s performance today in the derby. “I was super proud of her. Her first trip was great. She was champion in the adults last week at WEF, but she was a little nervous today. She had a great first round, and then she had a little miss in the handy, but I was very proud of her.”

Cole was very supportive of The Ridge Hunter Days. “It was lovely! The course rode really smooth while still being challenging. The farm is gorgeous. It’s really nice to be able to walk straight over from WEF over here and feel the same level of competition and expertise.”

Emma Kurtz and Eloquence moved up, coming back fourth from the first round. The pair rode a very handy second round, finishing with a 178 to end at 350 to bring home the red ribbon.

Tiffany Morrissey and Bellucci added an additional 177 to their original 169 to total at 346, good enough for third. Denice De Risio-Perry rode the gorgeous dappled bay gelding Crescendo to a fourth place finish. Revelstoke and Hannah Isop finished in fifth overall. Penny Lombardo would round out the top six on Missy Yoder’s Too Much Fun.

The eleventh week of The Ridge at Wellington’s Turf Tour will continue tomorrow, Saturday, March 21, at the International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC) with its 1.40m Grand Prix.

Saturday’s events promise to be exciting, with the $15,000 1.40m Grand Prix running from 8 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. on the turf field. The second ring will begin at 8 a.m., with the Children/Adult Jumper classes, offering a classic round for the division, running with an open card until noon. In addition, there will be a Low Schooling Jumper division with two classes running alongside one another, offered at this height. The $2,000 Child and Adult Classic is pointed from Marshall & Sterling, NAL & WIHS. The Junior/Amateur-Owners will start at 12:30 p.m. and run until 4:30 p.m., with both the regular class and classic card open concurrently. The $3,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Jumper Classic is NAL pointed. Medium schooling jumpers will also be offered with cards running concurrently.

Alex Granato and Zenith Dance Waltz Away with Win in 1.30-1.35m Class

Wellington, FL – March 18, 2015 – Today was a stunning day at The Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour, where competition heated up in the 1.30-1.35m classes on the field at the International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC). Claiming the top prize was Alex Granato, riding Zenith Dance for Page Tredennick.

Granato has been consistently successful at The Ridge, winning the same class during the first and fifth weeks of the tour on Zenith Dance and racking up the ribbons as the circuit has progressed on several mounts. While Granato has been busy competing with his other rides at different venues, he came back with a vengeance this week to clinch the top spot.

“[Zenith Dance] is pretty fresh today. We haven’t shown him in a few weeks; I’ve been back and forth between here and Ocala, splitting time with the Grand Prix horses. I wanted to show this week with Cesario 15 and Zenith Dance here, before the Finals next week. They both felt good. Zenith Dance jumped really well, so he just did the one course – he was super and didn’t need to do more.”

He continued, “I’m a little tired because we’ve been hitting the road a lot! It’s been nice to travel though; it’s broken the winter up and we have a couple horses that are doing each different venue. So it’s been a nice break for the horses, to split their time and not do a lot, but compete at several good venues. It’s been wonderful for us to jump fresh courses in new places; it keeps it more fun and entertaining, rather than the same mundane ring day after day.”

There was a bit of a distraction at the horse show today, which stole a bit of the spotlight from Granato and Zenith Dance. Peeps, the dwarf miniature mare, accompanied Granato and Josh Dolan to the show in order to raise awareness about animals in need of rescue. The two rescued the mare, along with about 34 others, from a farm in Kentucky that had once been a breeding farm for some of the top miniatures in the country. The farm had fallen on hard times, and the pair knew they had to do something to help the horses.

The day after first contacting the owner, they were able to remove 19 from the property and get most of them placed in great homes, with keeping five for their own farm. In total, they’ve saved 35 miniatures from starvation and neglect. This incredible rescue effort has led to Granato and Dolan investigating the possibility of creating a nonprofit in order to help out other minis like Peeps.

Peeps was certainly a hit at the show, nimbly hopping over the polo field perimeter, imitating her fellow barn-mates. “She’s kind of become a local celebrity. The girls in the barn made her an Instagram page and she has almost 5,500 followers. People come up to us. We took her over for the Nations Cup night, and now people are emailing us and coming up to us at shows. We went up to Ocala and people we didn’t even know came up to us to ask if we brought Peeps.”

Debbie Stephens was the first rider this morning to test out the course designed by Nick Granat. Riding Centennial Farm’s Swagger, she blazed a fast pace around the track, leaving all of the rails up to finish on a time of 33.407. Stephens has been a huge supporter of the Turf Tour throughout the circuit and is consistently in the ribbons aboard her unmistakable white steed. Stephens enjoys challenging herself and her mounts by varying the location where she competes.

“I love WEF, but I also think it’s nice to change things once in a while and I would consider this a great change. Coming over here offers different jumps, different course designers and a different atmosphere. I think that it keeps the horses very well rounded. I think that also as a rider, it keeps me well rounded. I enjoy both venues; I think top competition is in Wellington and I think these places really bring the best out in the horse and the rider. I think it gives you a really good perspective of where you are.”

Stephens’ time would have her finish the day in the third spot, behind Granato and second placed Aaron Dixon, riding Peninsula Vertigo for Marilyn Dawson-Dixon. Christine McCrea would finish in fourth on Candy Tribble’s Ronaldo De La Pomme. Veteran of the Turf Tour Conor Swail would pick up the fifth place ribbon on Blue Hill Farm’s Tahiti Island, and Mario Deslauriers rounded out the top six with Henrik.

In the second class, Matthew Metell walked away with the victory. He sped around the course to finish in a time of 31.785, riding Cyon Z for Wolver Hollow. In doing so, he flew past the last team to go double clear, Laura Kraut riding Nick Skelton’s Cash. She had finished in a time of 35.30 seconds and would finish the day in second place.

Metell and Cyon Z have been successful during the Turf Tour, claiming the top prize in the same class last week. Metell is pleased with the progress his mount has made over the winter circuit.

“He’s a young 8-year-old and he’s been coming along really nicely. He’s growing into himself well. We’ve had a lot of fun showing here the last few weeks with him. He’s been a good boy. He jumped some high schooling rounds over at WEF earlier in the circuit, and then we’ve been bringing a group of horses here, so it’s easier for us to show them all in one place and he likes the grass, he’s been good here.”

Mario Deslauriers claimed third and fourth aboard Peyton and Rosalind Schaefer’s Cherrypop, respectively. Conor Swail picked up a fifth place ribbon on Susan Grange’s Fortis Fortuna, and Nina Fagerstrom rode Cover Girl to round out the ribbons in a field of 28.

The second ring saw plenty of action today with both the young jumper and schooling jumper classes. Marshall Field VI claimed the top spot in the 6-year-old Young Jumper Championship (YJC) Qualifying class with Click for Quality. Paul O’Shea finished in second on Virtuoso de Talma, and Jennifer Ramsey rode Diabolo D’esquelmes for Ronda Stavisky to the third place finish.

Paul O’Shea garnered the top ribbons in the 7/8-year-old YJC Qualifying class, with Gatsby 165 bringing home the blue and Skara Glen’s Presence the red. Mario Deslauriers finished in third on his own Can Cun 2.

Beth Underhill and Viggo Seal The Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour Week 10 Victory

Wellington, FL – March 13, 2015 – For nine weeks, Canada’s Beth Underhill consistently placed at the top of The Ridge Turf Tour series, yet victory seemed to evade both her and her veteran mount Viggo. During Week 10 of the Turf Tour Series, Underhill left nothing to chance, racing to the top of the leader board with Viggo in 33.003 seconds. They closed out the competition only five-hundredths of a second ahead of Sharn Wordley and Popstar Lozonais.

The Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour series saw one of its largest competition days, with over 50 horse and rider combinations traversing Nick Granat’s technical track. Brianne Goutal was the first entry of the day, riding to a double clear effort in 34.411 seconds with Ballade Van Het Indihof to set the pace for the consecutive competitors. Sharn Wordley (NZL) was the first of the 21 jump-off contenders to surpass Goutal, riding Popstar Lozonais to the impressive time of 33.056 seconds.

Quentin Judge nearly caught Wordley, landing from the final fence in 33.122 seconds with HH Dark de la Hart. The 12-year-old stallion has a plethora of experience, and Judge uses The Ridge Turf Tour to freshen up his mount.

“He is a very good turner, you can really trust him to turn back as tight as you want, and he knows where his legs are,” Judge said. “He has so much experience that he finds the way for you, so he doesn’t have to go that fast across the ground. I thought the course was fair, and I think the courses have gotten more technical as the winters have progressed, as they should. Today was a good test, and we are looking forward to the finale in a couple of weeks.”

Nina Fagerstrom and Hot Topic put in a super effort in the jump-off, following immediately after Judge; however, their time of 33.198 seconds put them as third in the standings, pending when Underhill and Viggo took their turn at the track three rounds later.

Until today, Underhill was always the bridesmaid, but never the bride. She took the top placings consistently throughout the 12-week series, as one of The Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour’s most competitive exhibitors. Today, at the International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC), the winds changed, as Underhill left no stone unturned, shaving the seconds with Viggo on the turf.

“I knew I had to be right on it to be competitive in the jump-off,” Underhill explained. “I walked from one to two knew that if I believe the six strides is there we could do it. It was a bit of a blind turn, but we pulled it off. I feel I did the most efficient track I was capable to do with Viggo. He has a big canter and sometimes spends a little bit of time galloping. He was very smooth and efficient today, and honestly, I think it was his best jump-off of The Ridge so far.”

Underhill continued, “I am so pleased with how consistent he has become. He has been so competitive and consistent each time out that it makes me really pleased to see how well he has responded to being down here. This is helping to prepare him to move up to the bigger classes.”

Underhill’s time knocked Wordley into the second place, with Judge finishing the day in third. Fagerstrom closed out the 1.40m Grand Prix in fourth, while Goutal took the fifth place finish. Chicago’s speed demons Lisa Goldman and Aslan rounded out the top six.

“I think it is a fantastic tour,” Underhill concluded. “I have been able to bring some young horses here, as well, giving them their first opportunity to experience the turf. This series is such a benefit for riders and trainers. We are able to bring our young horses along, as well as many of our students. For me, it is an opportunity to get out and do some great show jumping at a different location. The quality of these competitions is top notch, which is why we keep coming back every week, and why there are more and more of us. People are becoming more aware and really seeing the benefit of competing.”

The second ring was alive with action as the 1.40m Grand Prix action unfolded concurrently. The Low Schooling Jumpers kicked off Jumper Ring 2 with double wins from Emily Snack and Jessika, owned by Centennial Farm. In the speed class, Ned Cuniffe and Dollydoo picked up the second place, while Sarah Wayda and Contentus finished third. During the jump-off class, Alessanda D’amour and Diamon Dance captured the second place, while Cuniffe duplicated his clean and speedy effort from the first class to take the third place with Dollydoo.

In the Medium Schooling Jumpers, Diego Vivero and Big Brother raced to the first place in the speed class. In second place was Jonathan McCrea with Brugal VDL, while Matthew Metell and Everton closed out the class in third. The jump-off class saw a 1-2 finish for Marshall Field aboard Click for Quality and Carpathia K, respectively. Third place was awarded to El Casper with Victoria Guilleksen in the irons.

Conor Swail Shows It’s More Than Luck, Riding to 1.40m Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour Victory

Conor Swail and Fortis Fortuna win Week 9 Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour 1.40m Grand Prix.

Wellington, FL – March 6, 2015 – Ireland’s Conor Swail rode Fortis Fortuna to a blazing time of 33.669 seconds in the Ridge at Wellington’s 1.40m Grand Prix at Tonkawa Farms to snatch up the win today. Not only did Swail secure the first place, but he also guided his other mount, Tahiti Island, to the third place finish, proving that his winning streak is more than just the luck of the Irish. It was Olympian Laura Kraut and Zeremonie that followed close behind, breaking the beam in 33.819 seconds to take the second place finish, just narrowly missing Swail’s time.

Swail set an early lead this morning at Tonkawa Farms, riding to the top finishes with his two mounts. He left nothing to chance as he guided Fortis Fortuna, owned by Susan Grange, to the jump off time of 33.669 seconds. He followed only three trips later with Tahiti Island, owned by Blue Hill Farm, to rank second with an equally impressive, but more conservative round in 36.720 seconds.

“It is another different venue, and the footing is fantastic. It is a beautiful, beautiful setting. It is the same each week at the shows; it is nice to have a place like The Ridge,” Swail said. “At The Ridge, your horses can get a great education, enjoy beautiful courses and compete at a different venue every week. Each venue has its own unique style, so it is really beneficial to bring your horses here and compete for some nice prize money, too.”

Swail continued, “Fortis Fortuna is a very nice horse who has done a few of these classes now, and today she had a very fast round. I think it would be hard to beat our time. We got a little lucky today, which is never bad. Hopefully I posted a score that will stand. It’s there to beat, but she jumped great and did everything I asked her to do. Wherever that gets me, I’m happy with that.”

Their time held strong as consecutive competitors attempted to catch it without avail. Only eight horse and rider combinations were able to jump double clear, but Olympian Laura Kraut was prepared to add some heat to the competition, showing Zeremonie to the last clear jump-off round of the day. For the first time since Swail posted the path finding time, it seemed as though defeat was a possibility.

Kraut took all the inside turns, keeping a tight track as she navigated Nick Granat’s course. She even left out strides; however, the clock would stop .15 seconds off Swail’s pace.

“This is the second time that I have jumped Zeremonie at The Ridge,” Kraut said of the grey mare. “She did really well the first time we jumped on the turf at the Wanderer’s Club, and she seems to really love the grass. She jumped great out there today; she was super. I am so happy that we came here. We heard rumors that the footing was amazing, and they were right – it is. It is so nice for the horses; it feels like they are jumping on a trampoline.”

Darrin Dilin and Carlotta Singular would capture the fourth place just behind Swail and Tahiti Island. They rode to the time of 37.671 seconds without fault. Sarah Wayda and Faroukh finished fifth, while the first rider of the day, Sayre Happy, rounded out the top six with Big Star.

Wellington, FL – March 4, 2015 – The Ridge at Wellington’s Turf Tour visited Tonkawa Farms to kick off the ninth week of competition. The sun shined all day over the gorgeous polo fields on the private estate. Manicured hedges bordered the property and created a tranquil setting for the horses and riders to enjoy beautiful courses designed by Nick Granat in the main ring and Michel Ismalum in the second ring. Many of the riders took advantage of the incredibly close proximity to the show grounds and nearby farms and hacked over.

Conor Swail rode several horses today in the 1.30-1.35m classes and set the time to beat on his winner from earlier weeks of the Tour. Susan Grange’s Fortis Fortuna blazed around the course, stopping the clock at 31.708 seconds. This pair’s time held up for the majority of the day.

Just before 2:30 p.m., Christina Firestone entered the ring aboard Graham Fletcher’s Wilhelmus S. She flew around the track, giving Swail a run for his money. When the clock stopped, there was a new leader for the $2400 1.30-1.35 m class- the time read 29.917 seconds.

Wilhelmus S is a new mount for Firestone, having just acquired the ride about a week ago. “It’s really exciting to come out here and go this well. The course rode great! I love jumping on the turf; I think the horses go better on it. They were really friendly courses, the striding was right on, and I didn’t have to question any of it.”

Firestone was happy to be supporting the Turf Tour. “We’ve been doing the same classes every week over at the other horse show, and I wanted to change it up. It’s great that they have two rounds back to back, so that if you make a mistake in the first round you can go back and fix it in the next one. I think it’s really nice that they have the friendly 1.40 Grand Prix on Friday. I’ll for sure be back for it!”

The second $2400 1.30-1.35m class was won by McLain Ward on HH Eli Cash for Double H Farm. The world-class athlete piloted the 8-year-old to an unbeatable time of 30.291 seconds. Ward made his jump off round look effortless, leaving out strides and wasting no time in the turns on his way to the victory.

Ward spoke about his mount that he has brought to many of the stops during the Turf Tour. “He’s an eight year old, owned by Double H Farm. I’ve just been developing him here in this series and he’s coming along quite nicely. He’ll continue to compete in this series; he’ll do the 1.40 on Friday and probably do one more before the end of the season. He’s an exciting talent.”

He continued, “The course rode beautifully. Nick Granat’s done an unbelievable job this whole season for the young horses. The venues are spectacular. Really for the young horses it’s a far better, more tranquil and more productive experience than the back rings at the other show. It really gives them some great experience for the future so it’s really nice to have.”

Second went to Dafnina, ridden by Diego Gonzalez Cremer for Claudia Licousi. As the last rider of the day, Diego did his best to catch Ward’s time, but fell short finishing in 31.096 seconds. Third went to Miranda Scott riding her longtime partner Quick Latinus, posting a time of 32.062 seconds.

The Young Horse series, in partnership with Classic Champions, Inc., was highly successful today, with an abundance of entries into the 5, 6 and 7-year-old divisions. The 5-year-old division was dominated by Baloumerang SV, owned by Genevieve Edwards and ridden by Josh Dolan. McKayla Langmeier piloted Laney in the 6-year-old Young Jumper class to rack up another win for owner Linda Langmeier. In the 6-year-old Young Jumper Championship qualifier class, Everton, owned by Wolver Hollow and ridden by Matthew M. Matell, triumphed. The highlight of the day in Ring 2 was the $2000 7-year-old Young Jumper class. Skara Glen’s Prescence cashed in during that class, winning for owner Skara Glen Stables with Paul O’Shea in the irons.

The Schooling Jumper divisions were also a popular option that had many riders hacking to Tonkawa Farms, which is conveniently located near the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. In the Low Schooling Jumpers, Linda Sheridan won the first class aboard her own Royal Diamond. Kandice, owned and ridden by Olivia Rathgeb, came out on top in the second class. Catherine Sullivan rode Kandel to first place in the first Medium Schooling Jumper class for Iron Horse Farm. Robert McNeel rode his own Zuidam to the top of the leaderboard in the second Medium class.

Friday’s events promise to be exciting, with the $15,000 1.40m Grand Prix running from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Beginning at 8 a.m., the second ring will have Low Schooling Jumpers, with two classes running simultaneously with open cards until noon. Medium Schooling Jumpers will kick off at 11 a.m. with two classes running with open cards and will run until 1:30 p.m.

Conor Swail and Martha Louise won The 1.40 Grand Prix Week 8 at IPC.

Wellington, FL – March 2, 2015 – Week nine of The Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour will kick off this Wednesday at Tonkawa Farms, offering easy riding distance adjacent from the showgrounds. This week’s events will take place on Wednesday, March 4 and Friday, March 6. In addition to the ever-popular 1.30-1.35m classes, Wednesday will offer Low and Medium Schooling Jumpers, as well as the YJC qualifying Young Jumper classes for 5, 6, and 7 Year Old Young Jumpers. Friday will see the Grand Prix running all day in the main ring, and Low and Medium schooling jumpers running in the second ring.

Wednesday will have just under $5,000 in prize money up for grabs in the 1.30-1.35m jumpers, with two classes running concurrently. The Young Jumpers series returns to the field on Wednesday with the 5 Year Old Jumpers, 5 Year Old YJC Qualifying Class, the 6 Year Old Jumper, the $500 6 Year Old YJC Qualifying Class, the 7 and 8 Year Old Jumpers and the $2,000 7 Year Old YJC Qualifying Class.

This Friday, exhibitors can look forward to the $15,000 Ridge at Wellington 1.40m Turf Tour Grand Prix, which Conor Swail of Ireland dominated during Week 8 of competition.

Exhibitors have all complimented the management, hospitality and courses offered at The Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour. Each week the courses have tested both horse and rider alike, asking technical questions with tracks created by renowned designers Eric Hasbrouck and Nick Granat.

The Tour is a unique series designed to develop upcoming talent in both horses and riders and provide a change in venue for all riders. The series offers unrivaled hospitality with a relaxed atmosphere as a fresh experience. On Wednesday, the fields at Tonkawa will see horses and riders competing in 1.30-1.35m jumpers with an open card running from 8 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. The second ring will see low jumpers and the 5 Year Old Jumpers divisions from 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. and medium schooling jumpers and 6 Year Old Jumpers from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. At 2 p.m. the 7 Year Old Jumpers will have their time on the turf. Each division has two classes running concurrently with open cards.

Conor Swail Takes 1.40m Grand Prix Victory with Martha Louise at Wellington Turf Tour

Wellington, FL – February 27, 2016 – The eighth week of The Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour saw over 30 horse and rider combinations tackle Nick Granat’s technical track, but Conor Swail and Martha Louise were the ones to beat from the get go. Irish rider, Swail, rode his veteran mount to the top of the leader board as only the sixth exhibitor of the day, breaking the beam in 38.731 seconds. Beth Underhill and Viggo nearly caught Swail later in the day, but one-tenth of a second would separate the top two finishers today.

Although the sky was grey with clouds threatening downpour, the International Polo Club Palm Beach stayed dry and offered the ideal footing for the $15,000 1.40m Grand Prix. Jeffery Welles and KM Whatever RV were the first pair of the day to ride to a double clear effort. They set the standard high with a time of 40.641 seconds, but with nearly 25 competitors hot on their heels, the day would close out with Welles in third place.

Nick Granat’s course proved more technical and built bigger than the past years, which Welles looked upon in favor. Granat utilized a tricky triple combination to catch many of the riders off guard. The line required a forward five strides to the triple, but the verticals came up quickly, requiring patience on both the rider and the horse’s parts.

Welles explained, “It seems a little more aggressive this year, which is good for this Friday class, because they have more entries. It was a nice, galloping, open track, and it had a nice flow to it. The jump off had a couple short turns, definitely more turning than galloping. It was a little cooler today, which allowed the horses to brighten up a little bit.”

Swail followed only two horses behind Welles with Martha Louise, shattering the previously set time with a double clear effort in 38.731 seconds. He was able to make tight rollbacks and eat up the ground to set the day’s unbeatable time.

“Martha Louise is one of my top horses,” Swail said of the mare. “She has had a few weeks off, so our plan is to do The Ridge for a few weeks. It is lovely to come over here and let her jump around. It is a great education for her.”

Swail continued, “I think it was a very good course today. It is well spread out and it was a very long course, but very good. I think Nick [Granat] has done a good job today. Martha Louise is quite experienced and is a naturally fast horse. She is very good at rollbacks, so I thought I would use them as best I could. I thought it was a nice round and there is possibly a little room left for someone else, but I hope I am up there somewhere.”

It was Beth Underhill who almost unseated Swail from the first place position, but one-tenth of a second would separate the two today. Underhill rode Viggo to the time of 38.835 seconds to fall just shy of Swail’s pace and finish the competition in second.

Underhill has been a proponent of The Ridge at Wellington since its inception, and has frequented the competitions each week. “My horse loves this ring. He loves the footing, and I think this course was excellent. I think it has become more technical each week. Viggo stayed careful and fast in the jump off, I couldn’t ask for anymore from him today, I am thrilled with him today. He tried his best today, and I couldn’t be more proud.”

Underhill continued, “I think Nona [Garson] and George [D’Ambrosio] do such a wonderful job, they are so welcoming. It is a throwback to the way horse shows used to be. I think the way that they have organized it, where you can come in and walk the course and make it work for your schedule, is something we really need for our sport. It is wonderful for the horses to get out here and have new scenery and hone their skills elsewhere, it helps out with competing at other horse shows, too.”

Chicago’s Lisa Goldman and Aslan rode to the fourth place position behind Welles, finishing the track just off his time in 40.712 seconds. Catherine Pasamore was awarded the fifth place finish for her time of 40.864 with Z Canta, while Ansgar Holtgers and Wisconsin rounded out the top six.

While the 1.40m Grand Prix was taking place down the polo field, Ring 2 was alive with action with the Low and Medium Schooling Jumpers and the much sought-after $2,000 Child/Adult Jumper Classic and the $3,000 Junior/Amateur-Owner Classic. It was Adam Prudent who kicked off the day in Ring 2, riding to the first Medium Schooling Jumper victory with Sir Lochinvar.

“The course designer did a good job with [the course]. It is quite hard to make two courses fit in one small ring, but these are very nice courses,” said Prudent. “I love jumping on grass. I think horses jump better on the grass than anywhere else, it is great to have this as an option during the winter circuit.”

Christian Currey rode Vigaro to a first-place finish in the $2,000 M&S/NAL WIHS Child/Adult Jumper Classic. Elizabeth Maloney had quite a successful day, topping the second Medium Schooling Jumper class as the owner of Bigua and winning the $3,000 NAL Junior/Amateur-Owner Classic with Quadrifolio, affectionately known around the barn as Q.

“My horse loves jumping on the grass. I don’t usually turn too tight with him because he’s my baby, and I tend to baby him too much,” said Maloney. “But I felt safe out here doing that because the footing was so good, and we don’t even have big studs in, just little studs.”

This week’s events will take place on Wednesday, February 25 and Friday, February 27. In addition to the ever-popular 1.30-1.35m classes, Wednesday will also offer the Low and Medium Schooling Jumpers. Friday’s wide variety of classes, including Children/Adult, Junior/Amateur-Owner and Schooling Jumper options, in addition to the Grand Prix, is sure to be popular with amateurs and professionals alike.

The Ridge at Wellington Horse Show Series Fast Facts

Events:
The Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour offers their popular 1.40m Invitational Grand Prix for its third year, with an open in gate format taking place once a week at beautiful venues throughout Wellington. The Ridge at Wellington Grand Prix Finale will take place March 27, 2015.

The Turf Tour also will host 1.30m-1.35m Jumpers every Wednesday beginning January 7, 2015 and running until March 18, 2015.

Young Jumper Classes and both Children’s/Senior Jumper Classics will find their home intermittently throughout the Wellington Turf Tour, running concurrently with the 1.30-1.35m and 1.40m Jumpers.

The Ridge at Wellington offers Equitation Shows every Tuesday of the month from January 6 – March 23, 2015. There will also be a series of schooling shows at the Ridge at Wellington for all experience levels.

Two USHJA International Hunter Derbies will take place February 6, 2015 and March 20, 2015.

What:
The Ridge at Wellington series includes several weeks of competition throughout the Winter Season with USEF Rated Equitation Shows. This winter will also feature five two-day schooling shows. The Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour will offer 1.30m-1.35m Jumpers, 1.40m Invitational Grand Prix, Young Jumpers, Children’s/Adult Classics, Masters Jumpers, Junior/Amateur Classics, two hunter derbies and the Pre-Green Incentive Stake.
