WELLINGTON, FL – May 12, 2013 — Looking to finish strong the final three weeks of the spring season, Pony Express won its first tournament Sunday at Grand Champions Polo Club.

Pony Express jumped out to a three-goal advantage in the opening chukker, never relinquished its lead and went on to defeat Longfield, 13-9, in the championship final of the USPA Sun Cup.

Pancho Eddy, making his Grand Champions debut this season, played well on both ends of the field and was named Most Valuable Player.

It was Pony Express teammate Tomas Goti who convinced the Argentine 4-goaler to join the Pony Express lineup. Eddy and Goti have played together for several years and that on-field chemistry was evident against Longfield.

“We were very comfortable with each other in the game,” Eddy said. “Playing with Tomas makes getting the ball easy to go forward.

“The plan was to get in the lead early and hold on to it until the end,” Eddy said. “This is a good team and we are all friends so it’s always fun to play with them. Usually, I go back to Argentina to play but Tomas offered me this chance and it was nice. I have been playing all my life and I love it.”

Joining Eddy and Goti on the winning team was ageless team captain Bob Daniels and 17-year-old Wesley Finlayson filling in for Justin Daniels, who was spending Mother’s Day with his mother.

“I am very happy with the win,” Daniels said. “It was really nice to get the early lead. It gets your confidence up. When you are playing with a little bit of margin it always helps.

“Everyone played well, all three of them: Pancho, Tomas and Wes,” Daniels said. “I am very happy with my team and how they played today. Everybody was on today. The chemistry was good. I think our horses were good today.”

Longfield featured Nic Roldan, Brandon Phillips, teenager Grant Ganzi and Hannah Buchan, presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers as the tournament’s Most Valuable Mom on Mother’s Day.

The one-two punch of Eddy and Goti frustrated Longfield, making its finals debut, for most of the game.

“There were parts of the game that got really competitive,” Eddy said. “We got a cushion lead and were able to play our game.”

Goti led scoring with five goals, Finlayson had four goals, Eddy added three and one goal was awarded on handicap.

Ganzi led Longfield’s scoring with four goals and Roldan had three. Buchan and Lucas Lalor each had one goal.

The 12-goal rated Pony Express team, buoyed by its horsepower, had a five-goal lead four different times (7-2, 9-4, 10-5, 11-6) during the game. Pony Express led 9-5 at the half.

“We are very happy to win,” Goti said. “I always play with Bob; Pancho is a good friend and very good pro player. Wesley played well today with us.

“We started quite strong and maintained the lead,” Goti said. “At the end they played better but we still controlled the game.”

Longfield lost Roldan, its 8-goaler, for the final two chukkers when he was forced to leave the game with an injured rib. Lalor went in for Roldan in the final two chukkers.

Roldan aggravated the rib injury while playing with Phillips in Saturday’s Mexico vs. The Rest of the World game in Mexico City, which Mexico won 12-11 in overtime. Roldan, who returned on an early morning flight with Phillips, was still bothered by the injury during Sunday’s game.

Xbox, ridden by Grant Ganzi, was named Best Playing Pony.

In round robin action earlier in the day, ELG defeated Palm House, 5-3, in a hotly-contested final round robin game, that featured two technical fouls, to win the subsidiary title.

Teenager Juancito Bollini and Carlucho Arellano each had two goals, Lucas Lalor added one and Avery Chapman played well defensively for ELG. Glenn Straub led Palm House with two goals.

In the other two round robin games, KIG and Palm House tied, 3-3 and ELG defeated KIG, 3-2.

The 2013 spring circuit at Grand Champions continues to be one of the most competitive in tournament history with four different team champions.

The other three tournament winners were ELG/Psycho Bunny (Palm City Open), Power Horse (Polo Gear Invitational) and Audi (USPA Spring Challenge).

The remaining two Grand Champions spring tournaments are the May 17-19 USPA Eastern Challenge and May 24-27 Memorial by Piaget.

WELLINGTON, FL – May 10, 2013 — Longfield will make its first championship appearance against Pony Express in Sunday’s final of the USPA Sun Cup at Grand Champions Polo Club.

The fourth tournament of the 2013 spring season at Grand Champions featured five teams in Friday’s opening day action.

Longfield (Gavin Guinan/Grant Ganzi, Hannah Buchan, Brandon Phillips, Nic Roldan) advanced with a 5-3 victory over Palm House (Glenn Straub, Carlitos Gracida, Martin Estrada, Tommy Biddle) in Friday’s opening game at Palm City.

Grant Ganzi, who entered the game in the third chukker after his classes at St. Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, led scoring with two goals. Guinan, who started the game for Ganzi, Roldan and Phillips each added a goal.

Roldan and Phillips then headed to the airport for a flight to Mexico City where they will compete Saturday in the high goal game Mexico vs. The Rest of the World before returning for Sunday’s finale at Grand Champions.

Pony Express (Bob Daniels, Tomas Goti, Pancho Eddy, Gene Goldstein) earned the other championship spot by winning the three-team round robin late Friday afternoon.

In the first round robin game, Pony Express defeated KIG, 7-3, behind Eddy’s four goals and Goti’s two goals. Goldstein added one goal.

Pony Express also defeated ELG, 5-3. Eddy scored three goals and Goti added two despite a rainstorm bearing down. After a short rain delay, the game was completed.

During the game, ELG’s Lucas Lalor was hit with a polo ball on his right knee in the third chukker and was treated by medics. Still in obvious pain, he managed to return for the final 2:35 minutes of the game.

“We’re good… we’re happy with the way we played,” Daniels said. “It’s been very competitive every week. Our team is good. We want to finish strong.

“Mostly I have been playing with Justin (Daniels) but today Justin couldn’t play because it’s Mother’s Day weekend. The kids are honoring their mother.”

Added Goti, “This year we lost in the final two weekends ago. We are very happy to be in the final and very happy with the team. We have won many tournaments and we are trying to continue.”

In the other round robin game, ELG (Lucas Lalor, Juancito Bollini, Carlucho Arellano, Avery Chapman) edged KIG, 6-4. Arellano led scoring with four goals and Juancito Bollini added two goals.

The game featured father and son competing against each other. Juan Bollini, a former 8-goaler, played for KIG along with M. Z. Kazi, Kris Kampsen and Marc Ganzi. Kampsen led with two goals; Ganzi and Bollini each had one.

The 2013 spring season has been one of Grand Champions’ most competitive and will have a fourth different champion on Sunday. The other three tournament winners were ELG/Psycho Bunny (Palm City Open), Power Horse (Polo Gear Invitational) and Audi (USPA Spring Challenge).

The consolation and championship final will be held Sunday.  The consolation game is at 10 a.m. and championship final at noon.

The remaining Grand Champions spring tournaments are the May 17-19 USPA Eastern Challenge and May 24-27 Memorial by Piaget.

WELLINGTON, FL – May 9, 2013 — KIG and Longfield return to action when Grand Champions Polo Club hosts the USPA Sun Cup, its fourth tournament of the spring season, on Friday and Sunday.

Five teams will compete Friday in opening day action known as “Friendly Fridays” at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Palm House, led by big-hitting 6-goaler Tommy Biddle, will play Longfield, led by 8-goaler Nic Roldan, in the opening six-chukker game at 11 a.m. on PB Polo Field 8.

KIG, led by 6-goaler Kris Kampsen and 5-goaler Juan Bollini; Pony Express, led by 6-goaler Tomas Goti; and ELG, led by 5-goalers Lucas Lalor and Carlucho Arellano, will compete in a round-robin beginning at 5 p.m. at Grand Champions Polo Club’s Field 1.

The teams are rated from 11 to 13 goals.

The 2013 spring circuit has been Grand Champions most competitive with three different champions emerging: ELG/Psycho Bunny (Palm City Open), Power Horse (Polo Gear Invitational) and Audi (USPA Spring Challenge).

The two-day USPA Sun Cup tournament also features some of the sport’s rising young stars including ELG’s Juancito Bollini, 17, a senior at Wellington High School, and Longfield’s 14-year-old Grant Ganzi, a freshman at St. Andrew’s.

Bollini and his father, Juan Bollini, have both won MVP awards during the first three weeks of the season. Bollini Jr. was named MVP at the Polo Gear Invitational after scoring five goals including the game-winner. Bollini Sr. was last weekend’s MVP for Piaget after rallying his team to a near-upset of Audi.

The consolation and championship final will be held Sunday at times to be announced.

USPASunCup009540The teams are:

KIG, 12 goals, Bash Kazi, Marc Ganzi, Kris Kampsen, Juan Bollini.

Pony Express, 11, Gene Goldstein, Bob Daniels, Tomas Goti, Pancho Eddy.

ELG, 12, Avery Chapman, Juancito Bollini, Lucas Lalor, Carlucho Arellano.

Palm House, 13, Martin Estrada, Glenn Straub, Carlitos Gracida, Tommy Biddle.

Longfield, 13, Hannah Buchan, Grant Ganzi, Nic Roldan, Brandon Phillips.

People are still talking about last Sunday’s marathon thriller that featured a wild finish and Audi’s 11-10 shootout victory over Piaget. Marc Ganzi clinched the win with a 40-year penalty shot.

Juan Bollini will return to action for KIG despite still nursing a sore shoulder after getting hit with a polo ball.

The remaining Grand Champions spring tournaments are the May 17-19 USPA Eastern Challenge and May 24-27 Memorial by Piaget.
