Hart and Shoemaker Dazzle during Freestyle to Win USEF Para-Dressage National Titles

Rebecca Hart and Schroeter’s Romani (Moonfyre Photography)

Katy, Texas – It could not have gone more perfect for Rebecca Hart. After posting spectacular scores in the Team Test and Individual Test, Hart wowed the judges in the Freestyle to earn her seventh USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship today. Hart topped the CPEDI3* Championship High Performance division with an overall score of 73.333%. Kate Shoemaker edged out the field in the CPEDI1* Championship National division to win the National title on an overall score of 71.435%, also due to a fascinating Freestyle. In addition to her title, Shoemaker was awarded the Lloyd Landkamer Memorial Sportsmanship Award for exemplifying good sportsmanship throughout the competition.

CPEDI3* Championship High Performance Division

Hart (Unionville, Pa.) and her own Schroeter’s Romani started the competition with a stellar Team Test. The Grade II athlete and the 2002 Danish Warmblood mare remained focused despite a storm rolling in to score a 73.118%. They moved into Saturday’s Individual Test on a high and followed it up with a magnificent showing to score a 74.314%. Sitting comfortably on top of the standings, the combination put together a flashy performance to score a 77.650% in the Freestyle. Hart changed the music around to match Schroeter Romani’s tempo, and it paid off.

“It was a good week and it feels amazing. This was a good way to give back to everyone who has been on this adventure with Romani and me. I would not be doing this without them. Without the support and guidance of Margaret Duprey and my trainer Todd Flettrich we wouldn’t be as solid of a team. We’re going to take everything we learned here and prepare for the CPEDI competitions in January,” said Hart.

It was a close competition for the Reserve National Title. However, an amazing Freestyle performance allowed Grade III athlete Angela Pevy (Avon, Conn.) and Ozzy Cooper, Rebecca Reno’s 2006 Trakehner gelding, to solidify the honor with a score of 74.950% and an overall score of 71.278%. Pevy started the competition with a wonderful Team Test for a score of 70.866%. They continued with a consistent performance during the Individual Test to score a 69.854%. Grade Ia athlete Roxanne Trunnell (Rowlett, Texas) also had a wonderful Freestyle for a score of 70.850%. She and Royal Dancer, Julia Handt’s 2005 Westphalian gelding, finished on an overall score of 69.352% for third place.

CPEDI1* Championship National Division

Shoemaker (Edmond, Okla.) did not know what to expect going into the Freestyle. This was her first one with Solitaer 40. No one would have known as they performed like seasoned veterans scoring a 74.700%. The Grade III athlete and her own 2007 Hanoverian gelding had an outstanding competition, overall. Each day Shoemaker asked her mount to give a little more, and he delivered. They began the competition with a solid Team Test for a score of 70.237%. They posted another laudable score in the Individual Test for a score of 71.122%.

“This was like a dream come true. We are going to use the feedback from the judges and work to improve especially on bringing more power and brilliance in the movements, while maintaining accuracy. There were dozens of people who came together to make this championship happen; I could not have done this without them,” said Shoemaker.

Kelly Boccia (Phoenix, Ariz.) maintained her lead after the Freestyle to be named the Reserve Champion with an overall score of 68.556%. She and her own Donauwalzer CSF had a terrific performance to score a 70.350%. The combination found themselves barely in third place after the Team Test with a score of 67.471%. They moved into second place after having a respectable Individual Test for a score of 68.743%. Shoemaker finished in third place, overall, on a score of 67.791%, with her own Dachstein, a 2008 Dutch Warmblood gelding.

Hart Claims Sixth National Title at Historic USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship

Rebecca Hart and Schroeter’s Romani (SusanJStickle.com)

Gladstone, N.J. – The USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship came to a close on Thursday at the USET Foundation Headquarters in Gladstone, N.J., with Rebecca Hart claiming her sixth National Title in a competition that was widely regarded as the most competitive the sport has ever seen in the United States. The day began under overcast and rainy skies, ultimately clearing at the lunch break to finish out the 2014 event with much more pleasant weather. All 24 entries performed their Freestyles, to earn the remaining 20% of their championship score, in front of the Ground Jury of Adrienne Pot, David Schmutz, and Kristi Wysocki.

“The caliber of riding has gone through the roof,” said Wysocki of the 2014 National Champion field. “It was very exciting to judge because our riders are so good.”

Hart (Unionville, Pa.) and her own Schroeter’s Romani, who she has only been riding since November of 2013 after purchasing the mare in Europe, closed out the week scoring 76.917 for her Freestyle to finish on a championship score of 74.642. The two-time Paralympian rode the 11-year-old Danish Warmblood to her familiar “Classical Gas” melody, increasing the level of difficulty by adding lateral moments.

“When I first rode her, I knew she was very special,” said the Grade II rider of Schroeter’s Romani. “She was really willing to work with me, and her body and my body worked right away, and mentally we were right in sync.”

Hart, who has enjoyed seeing the sport of para-equestrian dressage grow in the United States, believes that all the riders in the program are inspiring each other to reach new competitive heights.

“I think that pressure is always there,” said Hart of her quest to capture her sixth National Championship. “To see the growth (in the sport in the U.S.) from where it was when I first started is amazing. The pressure is always there, but that is a good thing.”

Margaret McIntosh and Rio Rio (SusanJStickle.com)
Margaret McIntosh and Rio Rio (SusanJStickle.com)

Earning the USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Reserve Championship were Margaret McIntosh and Rio Rio on a score off 71.582. The former eventer and her own eight-year-old Rheindlander mare performed an up-tempo Freestyle set to music from “The King and I” to score 73.500 in the final Grade 1A test of the week.

“I came here with very few expectations and I’m very satisfied with my horse,” said an excited McIntosh. “She is a little green, but she was great all week and I’m very happy.”

Finishing the championship in third place were Roxanne Trunnell (Rowlett, Texas) and her own 19-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare, Nice Touch, on a total of 71.582, after winning the Grade 1A Freestyle with a score of 74.

In Grade IV competition, Susan Treabess (Winters, Calif.) and Kathryn Hill’s nine-year-old PRE stallion, Kamiakin, completed a sweep of their division, winning the Freestyle with a score of 73.500 and winning the Grade IV National Championship on 71.128. Angela Peavy (Avon, Conn.) was the overall winner of Grade III competition, finishing on an overall total of 70.442 with Rebecca Reno’s 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding, Lancelot Warrior. Peavy also won Thursday’s Freestyle with her other horse, Rebecca Reno’s 8-year-old Trakehner gelding, Ozzy Cooper, on a score of 74.333. Hart was the overall victor in the Grade II Championship and Freestyle with Schroeter’s Romani. In Grade 1B, Sydney Collier (Ann Arbor, Mich.) won the overall competition with Patricia Mclean Mendenhall’s six-year-old Mecklenburg gelding, NTEC Cuplee, on a total of 71.389. They also won the Freestyle on a score of 74.167. McIntosh won the overall Grade 1A championship, while Trunnell won the Freestyle.

Gladstone, NJ – June 4, 2014 – The 2014 USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship/Selection Trial for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ (WEG) continued on Wednesday, June 4, at Hamilton Farm. The USET Foundation Headquarters hosted 24 of the best Para-Dressage athletes in the United States as they vie for National accolades and a spot on the U.S. Para-Dressage Team headed to Normandy WEG. On June 3, 2014, the final ride of the day, Marsha Cullen and Latte, were interrupted due to inclement weather. Cullen finalized the Grade II results after completing her Team Test on June 4. Team Test day ended with seven riders earning over a 70%. On Individual Test day, only five riders earned over a 70%. As the final day of competition approaches on Thursday riders are giving it their all to secure their rankings. Each score is imperative to the final National Championship ranking and the Selection Trial Long List. The Team Test counts for 40% as does the Individual Test at 40%. The FEI Musical Freestyle will count for 20% of the rider’s total score. There are nine horse and rider combinations competing solely for the 2014 USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship, while the 15 other horse and rider combinations are competing for the National Championship and the Selection Trial for the Normandy WEG. The June 2-5, National Championship/Trials ground jury includes President Kristi Wysocki (4*) USA, Adrienne Pot (3*) USA, and David Schmutz (4*) USA. The 2014 year has been the most competitive year in history and the competition in Gladstone continues to be exciting. Topping each Grade on Individual Test day was Susan Treabess and Kamiakin (PRE), owned by Scott and Katie Hill in Grade IV; Angela Peavy and Ozzy Cooper (Trak), owned by Rebecca Reno in Grade III; Rebecca Hart and Shroeter’s Romani, (Danish Warmblood) in Grade II, owned by Rebecca Hart in conjunction with Margaret Duprey, Cherry Knoll Farm, Sycamore Station Equine Division, Barbara Summer, The Ruffolos, and Will and Sandy Kimmel; Sydney Collier and Willi Wesley (Warmblood), owned by Victoria Dugan; and Roxanne Trunnell and Nice Touch (Dutch), owned by Roxanne Trunnell in Grade Ia. June 5 will reveal the 2014 USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Champion and Long List for the 2014 WEG. Once selected, the 2014 U.S. Para-Dressage Team will be led by U.S. Para-Equestrian Dressage Technical Advisor Kai Handt. The pressure is on for riders to be consistent and impressive as the final day approaches on Thursday with competition beginning at 8 AM.

Grade IV rider Susan Treabess (Winters, Calif.) understands the importance of consistent rides over the week. Treabess was also an athlete at the 2010 WEG in Kentucky. Treabess has been working hard with her PRE Stallion Kamiakin, and has made the 2013-2014 calendar a year of preparation and perfection working closely with her coach Dennis Callin. Treabess topped the Grade IVs on both the Team and Individual Test day this week. Her favorite test is the Musical Freestyle where the pair shows off their high-level Dressage talents. Combined scores from each day placed Susan Treabess in the top Grade IV position with an average score of 70.536% ahead of fellow 2010 WEG athlete Mary Jordan and Sebastian.

Angela Peavy and Lancelot Warrior earned the top Grade III combined score
Angela Peavy and Lancelot Warrior earned the top Grade III combined score

Grade III athlete Angela Peavy (Avon, Conn.) began her Para-Equestrian Dressage career in 2013. Peavy immediately topped the ranks with a string of talented horses and Heather Blitz by her side as coach. On Team Test day Peavy and Lancelot Warrior (Hannoverian), owned by Rebecca Reno were the top Grade III duo but on Individual Test day Peavy and Ozzy Cooper (Trak), topped Grade III ahead of her other mount Lancelot Warrior. After the two days Peavy and Lancelot Warrior are leading Grade III with a combined percentage score of 69.760%.

Five-Time U.S. National Champion and Two-Time Paralympian Rebecca Hart of Unionville, Penn. has topped both days of competition overall. The experienced athlete scored a 75.098% on the first day and a 73.048% on the second day for a combined total of 74.073%. Hart and Shroeter’s Romani became a brand new partnership in the Spring of 2014. In March 2014 Hart debuted the Danish Warmblood for the first time in Wellington, FL. After a quick trip overseas with her coach Missy Ransehousen in April for two CPEDI events, Hart was ready to head back to the U.S. for the National Championship/Trials. Hart has led the Grade IIs ahead of Californian Ashleigh Flores-Simmons and Verite SF, owned by Dana Williams.

In 2012, young rider Sydney Collier had not yet reached her 16th birthday before the 2012 Paralympic Selection Trials. The valuable experience of showing at the National Championships that year gave her the verification she needed to know that she was ready to aim for the 2014 WEG. Collier and her coach Wes Dunham have been nailing down Collier’s tests over the two years and even with two new mounts late in 2014, Collier scored top rankings in Grade Ib. On Team Test day Collier and Willi Wesley (Warmblood), owned by Victoria Dugan and Collier with NTEC Cuplee (Mecklenburg), owned by Patricia Mendenhall earned over the 70% marks right out of the gate. Collier continued her pattern earning a 71.609% with Willi Wesley on Individual Test day and a 71.322% with NTEC Cuplee. Collier is now finding herself in a great spot with combined total scores of 71.138% with Willi Wesley and a 70.694% with NTEC Cuplee.

Roxanne Trunnell of (Kennewick, WA) topped the Grade Ia’s with her own Nice Touch. Trunnell and Nice Touch have been together since 2003 even before Trunnell became unable to walk with an undiagnosed illness in 2009. Trunnell and Nice Touch have navigated the world of Para-Dressage and teamed up with Paralympic Equestrian Coach Kai Handt in 2013. During the National Championship/Trials Grade Ia has included many talented horse and rider combinations. After the first two days, Margaret McIntosh and Rio Rio (Rheinland Pfalz-saar International), owned by Margaret McIntosh are currently leading Grade Ia with a combined score of 71.159%. Trunnell and Nice Touch are just behind McIntosh with a 70.978%.

Thursday, June 5, will include the FEI Musical Freestyle competition and the awards ceremony. The awards ceremony will name the top horse/rider combinations in each of the four Grades in addition to the top horse/rider combinations selected for the long list for the U.S. Para-Dressage WEG Team. Also included in the final accolades will be the Sportsmanship Trophy. The Sportsmanship Trophy will be awarded to the winner of the Sportsmanship Award at the National Championship. The Sportsmanship Trophy is to be awarded annually to the Para-Dressage Athlete competing at the National Championship who best personifies the high standards and virtues of integrity, sportsmanship, honor, courage, team spirit, good temper and unselfishness. The organizing committee and officials of the competition shall nominate up to three competitors exemplifying the award definition the day before the final awards ceremony. The athletes participating in the event shall vote for the winner (one vote per athlete) once the slate has been announced. The winner will be presented the take-home trophy during the final awards ceremony and their name will be engraved on the Perpetual Trophy that is maintained by the USEF.

Positions one through three on the Short List/FEI Nominated Entry will be filled by the first through third ranked horse/athlete combination from the Selection Trial. If an athlete competes in the Selection Trial on more than one horse and ranks in the first through third placings at the Selection Trial with both horses, the athlete will be named to the FEI Nominated Entry in that athlete’s highest placed position with both horses. The positions that follow will be taken by the next highest ranking athlete/horse combination from the Selection Trial. Position four on the FEI Nominated Entry will be filled either by the next ranked athlete/horse combination from the Selection Trial or by an athlete/horse combination(s) named as a discretionary choice by the USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage Selectors. If a discretionary choice is utilized for position four then all athletes following the position filled by the discretionary choice will move down one place in the ranking from the Selection Trial up to the maximum number able to be nominated under FEI rules. If a discretionary choice is not used for position four then the remaining positions on the Short List/Nominated Entry will be filled by athlete/horse combinations in order of their ranking from the Selection Trial.

These selections will not be solidified until the competition has completed on June 5 and each ride is reviewed by the Selection Committee.

Hart Maintains Lead in USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship Following Two Days of Competition

Hart and Schroeter’s Romani on Tuesday (SusanJStickle.com)

Gladstone, N.J. – The USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship continued on Wednesday with all 24 competitors performing their second tests of the week. Before the Ground Jury of Adrienne Pot, David Schmutz, and Kristi Wysocki, riders demonstrated the FEI Individual Tests in their respective grade to earn a further 40% of their championship score in the Dick and Jane Brown Arena at the historic USET Foundation Headquarters in Gladstone, N.J. Rebecca Hart maintained her overall lead and lies on a championship average of 74.073 as she looks to secure her sixth National Title.

Hart (Unionville, Pa.) and her own 11-year-old Danish Warmblood Schroeter’s Romani performed an accurate, flowing Grade II Individual Test to score 73.048 on Wednesday. With their win on Wednesday the pair, which had spent much of the spring in Europe, earned their second victory of the championship after claiming top honors in the Team Test on Tuesday.

“Today she wasn’t quite as in front of my leg as I would have liked but it was one of those rides where you just have to ride what you have,” said Hart of her Individual Test. “And today it paid off.”

The 2008 and 2012 Paralympic Games and 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games veteran is enjoying competing at the storied USET Foundation Headquarters and believes this week is a great illustration of how far the sport of para-equestrian dressage has come in recent years.

“Gladstone is so historic and to ride here and in this ring where all the greats have ridden is fantastic. Para has grown so much in the past couple of years, to fill the upper and lower barn and have more than 20 riders when we only had five or six a few years ago is amazing.”

Lying in second place in the Championship following two tests are Margaret McIntosh (Reading, Pa.) and her own eight-year-old Rheindlander mare Rio Rio on a score of 71.159. On Wednesday the combination scored 69.928 in their Grade 1A Individual Test, a mark that would have been higher had they not incurred an error for going off course midway through their test.

McIntosh was pragmatic about the mistake and looks forward to riding her Freestyle with Rio Rio on Thursday.

“I have no good reason for forgetting my test today. Yesterday my test was a dream and I think I got a little caught up in the excitement of that. I’m looking forward to tomorrow, you can’t go off course in your Freestyle!” said McIntosh. “Rio Rio loves the music and it really picks her up and keeps her going forward.”

Grade 1B competitor, Sydney Collier (Ann Arbor, Mich.), stands in third place overall with Victoria Dugan’s 14-year-old Warmblood gelding Willi Wesley on an average of 71.138. On Wednesday they scored 71.609 for their Individual Test.

In Grade IV competition, Susan Treabess (Winters, Calif.) and Kathryn Hill’s nine-year-old PRE stallion Kamiakin secured their second win of the week as they topped the Individual Test with a score of 71.627. Angela Peavy (Avon, Conn.) also earned her second win of the championship after topping the Grade III FEI Individual Test with Rebecca Reno’s 8-year-old Trakehner gelding Ozzy Cooper on a score of 69.228. Hart and Schroeter’s Romani were the winners of the Grade II Individual Test to help them maintain their overall lead. Collier again bested herself in the Grade 1B Individual Test earning a repeat victory with Willi Wesley. Roxanne Trunnell (Rowlett, Texas) and her own 19-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare Nice Touch were the winners of the Grade 1A Individual Test after scoring 70.652.

Marsha Cullen (Claremore, Okla.) and her own nine-year-old Draft cross gelding Latte kicked off the day as they performed their Grade II Team Test. After starting their test on Tuesday they were unable to complete their performance because of lightning in the area. The combinations scored 61.863, finishing in fifth place, to bring Team Test competition to a close. On Wednesday afternoon Cullen and Latte scored 62.286 in the Grade II Team Test finishing in fifth.

Championship competition is extremely close heading into the final Freestyle tests, which will count for the final 20% of the championship score, with less than a point and a half separating second through eighth place.

Gladstone, NJ – June 3, 2014 – FEI Team Test day at the 2014 USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship/Selection Trial for the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games™ (WEG) showcased the top U.S. Para-Dressage athletes on June 3. The USET Foundation Headquarters, Hamilton Farm, hosted 24 spectacular Para-Dressage horse and rider combinations. Riders had their first opportunity on Tuesday to put their best ride forward for the ground jury including President Kristi Wysocki (4*) USA, Adrienne Pot (3*) USA, and David Schmutz (4*) USA. Seven of the riders earned over a 70% including Sydney Collier (Grade Ib) with both of her mounts Willi Wesley (Warmblood), owned by Victoria Dugan, and NTEC Cuplee (Mecklenburg), owned by Patricia Mendenhall; Roxanne Trunnell (Grade Ia) on her two horses, Nice Touch (Dutch), owned by Roxanne Trunnell and NTEC Royal Dancer (Westphalian), owned by Kai Handt; Grade III athlete Angela Peavy and Lancelot Warrior (Hannoverian), owned by Rebecca Reno; Grade Ia rider Margaret McIntosh and Rio Rio (Rheinland Pfalz-saar International), owned by Margaret McIntosh; and earning the top score of the day with a 75.098% was Rebecca Hart (Grade III) and Shroeter’s Romani, (Danish Warmblood), owned by Rebecca Hart in conjunction with Margaret Duprey, Cherry Knoll Farm, Sycamore Station Equine Division, Barbara Summer, The Ruffolos, and Will and Sandy Kimmel. The weather began beautifully for the athletes but as the afternoon came and Ashleigh Flores-Simmons was halfway through her test on Verite SF, a downpour began. Flores-Simmons maintained a steady pace and clean test as the rain continued to drench the arena. As the weather changed an alarm went off signaling lightning right as the last ride of day, Marsha Cullen, entered the arena. After two movements Cullen was given a weather delay but the storm did not look like it would stop. After completing Grade Ia, Ib, III, and IV, Grade II results will not be finalized until 8 AM on June 4. Cullen will enter the ring once again with her horse to complete the Team Test competition on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, June 4, riders will begin their FEI Individual Tests at 8:40 a.m. followed by the Musical Freestyles on June 5. Para-Equestrian Dressage athletes are competing over the week for their chance to secure a spot on the U.S. WEG Para-Dressage Team and a national ranking for 2014. There are nine horse and rider combinations competing solely for the 2014 USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship, while the 15 other horse and rider combinations are competing for the National Championship and the Selection Trial for the Normandy WEG.

The 2014 U.S. Para-Dressage Team will be led by U.S. Para-Equestrian Dressage Technical Advisor Kai Handt and it will consist of four athletes and four horses or three athletes and three horses. One team member must be classified either Grade Ia, Ib, or II. A team may not include more than two athletes from any one Grade.

Also in the festivities during the week, following the Individual Test competition on June 4, The USET Foundation is hosting a Kick Off Party for the newly established Jonathan Wentz Memorial Challenge for High Performance Para Dressage. The Challenge was created in thanks and appreciation to the Margaret H. Duprey and The Barnfield Foundation. The Kick Off Party begins at 5 PM at Hamilton Farm and includes Cocktails and Hors d’oeuvres. On the final day, June 5, after the Musical Freestyles, the 2014 USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Champion and Reserve Champion will be named following the competition.

Hart Gains Early Lead in the USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship and Selection Trial

Rebecca Hart and Schroeter’s Romani (SusanJStickle.com)

Gladstone, N.J. – The USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship and Selection Trial for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games U.S. Para-Equestrian Dressage Team kicked off on Tuesday in the Dick and Jane Brown Arena at the USET Foundation Headquarters, with 23 of the 24 entries completing the FEI Team Tests in their respective grades and earning the first 40% of their championship score. For the majority of the day competitors, officials and spectators enjoyed picturesque weather until rain and thunderstorms rolled in for the final division of the afternoon. The final competitors of the day, Marsha Cullen and Latte, were forced to stop midway through their Grade II test because of lightning in the area. They will perform their Team Test on Wednesday morning before all entries return to ride the FEI Individual Tests.

Earning the highest marks of the day from the Ground Jury of Adrienne Pot, David Schmutz, and Kristi Wysocki and heading the field after Tuesday is Grade II rider and five-time USEF National Champion Rebecca Hart with Schroeter’s Romani on a score of 75.098.

Hart (Unionville, Penn.) and her own 11-year-old Danish Warmblood mare produced an expressive and flowing effort on Tuesday to hold the early lead in the National Championship. The combination who are in their first competitive season together has continued to progress throughout 2014 and the two-time Paralympian has been working diligently to improve the mare’s performance in the ring.

“I was really happy; it was one of those test you enjoy the whole way through,” said Hart. “We’ve been working on her performance and consistency in the ring because she can be a little distracted and to have her go down the centerline and really focus was great.”

Hart spent much of the spring competing Schroeter’s Romani in Europe and believes the experience was invaluable.

“I think the European tour really helped us on our focus.”

Margaret McIntosh and Rio Rio (SusanJStickle.com)
Margaret McIntosh and Rio Rio (SusanJStickle.com)

Margaret McIntosh (Reading, Penn.) is making her second National Championship appearance this week in Gladstone and impressed with flowing, accurate 1A Team Test. The former eventing rider and her own eight-year-old Rheindlander mare scored 72.391 to hold second place in National Championship competition after Tuesday.

“We’ve been working really hard to get Rio more forward and consistent,” said McIntosh. “And she was the best she’s ever been today.”

Lying in third place in the championship are Grade 1A competitors Roxanne Trunnell (Rowlett, Tx.) and her own 19-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare Nice Touch who scored 71.304 in the afternoon session.

Susan Treabess (Winters Calif.) and Kathryn Hill’s nine-year-old PRE stallion Kamiakin, the first combination down centerline in the Dick and Jane Brown Arena, were the winners of Grade IV Team Test with a score of 69.444. As the final entry in Tuesday’s Grade III competition, Angela Peavy (Avon, Conn.) and Rebecca Reno’s 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding Lancelot Warrior proved unbeatable scoring 71.220. Hart and Schroeter’s Romani were the top placing finishers in Grade II competition with just Cullen and Latte needing to perform her Team Test on Tuesday morning. In Grade 1B, Sydney Collier (Ann Arbor, Mich.) bested herself posting a score 70.667 with Victoria Dugan’s 14-year-old Warmblood gelding Willi Wesley. While, McIntosh and Rio Rio were the winners of the Grade 1A Team Test.

Talented Field Lines Up for USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship and Selection Trial

Wes Dunham presents Sydney Collier’s Willi Wesley (SusanJStickle.com)

Gladstone, N.J. – A talented field of para-equestrian dressage athletes have flocked to the USET Foundation Headquarters in Gladstone, N.J., this week to stake their claim on a National Title and vie for selection for this summer’s 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. The USEF Para-Equestrian Dressage National Championship will host 24 combinations, across all five grades, 14 of which are also contesting the Selection Trial for the 2014 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games U.S. Para-Equestrian Dressage Team, which is being run concurrently at the event June 2-5.

At Monday’s Horse Inspection, two horses were held for re-inspection on Tuesday morning: Roxanne Trunnell’s ride Nice Touch and Mary Jordan’s Sebastian.

Five representatives from the Kentucky Equine Research U.S. Para-Equestrian Dressage Team that competed at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games will all compete in Gladstone this week. Rebecca Hart (Unionville, Pa.), Mary Jordan (Wells, Maine), and Susan Treabess (Winters, Calif.) will look to score National Championship honors, in addition to Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games selection, while Kim Decker (Centreville, Va.) and Laura Goldman (Highland Heights, Ohio) will be contesting only the National Championship. Hart, a Paralympian and five-time USEF National Champion, will ride her own Schroeters Romani, while Jordan will once again ride longtime partner Deecie Denison’s Sebastian (pending re-inspection on Tuesday morning), and Treabess is set to go down centerline with Kathryn Hill’s Kamiakin. Decker and Goldman will ride Paul and Donna Decker’s Dasher Destiny and Kristen Ropp’s Buckeye, respectively.

Derrick Perkins (Sugar Land, Texas), a U.S. Air Force veteran who was injured while on active duty in 1988, makes his National Championship debut this week and is also among the 15 entries vying for selection. In Gladstone, he will ride Kai Handt’s NTEC Hans.

Competition gets underway on Tuesday with all entries completing the FEI Team Test in their respective grades, which will count for 40% of their championship total, and on Wednesday competitors will return to the Dick and Jane Brown Arena to perform the FEI Individual Test for a further 40% of their overall scores. The 2014 champion will be crowned on Thursday as the final 20% of the week’s total is earned in the Freestyle tests.
