Charleston Summer Classics Designated a USEF Heritage Competition

The Classic Company is thrilled to announce that the USEF Board of Directors voted unanimously to award Heritage Competition status to Charleston Summer Classic I & II. Heritage designations are reserved for those competitions within the sport of Equestrian that have been established for a long period of time and have made a substantial contribution toward the development and promotion of the sport of equestrian, both within the sport and as well as within the broader community, by achieving, maintaining and promoting the equestrian ideals of sportsmanship and competition.

The Charleston Summer Classic started in July 1992 at the Seabrook Equestrian Center on Seabrook Island, South Carolina. The show was very successful for seven years then the land that surrounded the event was sold for development and the show was forced to move. The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC welcomed the event and it was held on the Estate behind the Biltmore house in a converted cornfield for seven more years. While this worked very well, Bob Bell, Classic Company President, knew the show needed to return to Charleston one day. Mullet Hall, a former plantation owned by Charleston County Parks and Recreation, was chosen to be the site for an equestrian center. Permits, public meetings, funding and construction took six years and a lot of community support, during which time the show remained at The Biltmore Estate. The show then moved to the Georgia International Horse Park for one year. The Charleston Summer Classic finally returned to the lowcountry to Mullet Hall the following year. The show’s sterling silver perpetual trophies document the show’s 26 year history recalling the dates and the names of the horses and riders that have shaped the equestrian sport.

“We are so pleased that the Charleston Summer Classic has been designated a USEF Heritage Competition,” commented Bell. “Our flagship show has been a part of the equestrian sport’s history. It took a village to make this happen! The community support has been phenomenal and the Charleston Summer Classic is a perfect example of how the community and a horse show community can come together as one. We wholeheartedly thank the USEF for granting the Charleston Summer Classics this prestigious USEF Heritage Competition designation,” he added.

Washington International Horse Show Receives USEF Heritage Competition Status

The Washington International Horse Show, an iconic horse show in the heart of the nation’s capital since 1958, has been honored with the United States Equestrian Federation’s designation as a USEF Heritage Competition. The Heritage Competition title is the highest honor currently held by any Federation horse show.

The designation of a USEF Heritage Competition is reserved for those competitions that have been in existence for a quarter-century or more, promoted and grown equestrian sport, and have made a contribution to the community outside the gates of the horse show by achieving, maintaining, and promoting the equestrian ideals of sportsmanship and competition.

“On behalf of the United States Equestrian Federation, I would like to congratulate the Washington International Horse show on its appointment of a USEF Heritage Competition at the Mid-Year Meeting of our Board of Directors,” said USEF Chief Executive Officer Chris Welton. “This show has become a part of the fabric of the American showing scene. With its endurance, dedication to philanthropic efforts and impact on its community, it is a perfect example of what we look for when designating Heritage Competitions.”

Since its debut, the Washington International Horse Show (WIHS) has been a major event on the equestrian calendar, with international show jumping the highlight of the show. For many years WIHS hosted Nations Cup competition, as well as top grand prix events. Today the show’s premier event is the $125,000 President’s Cup Grand Prix, a World Cup qualifying event. The winner is presented the President of the United States Perpetual Cup, a trophy commissioned by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in 1961, and bearing the seal of the President. For 2014, WIHS is rated USEF 5* Jumpers, USEF Premier Hunters and FEI CSI4*-W.

In its early years, WIHS also served as a showcase for the top horses from many breeds and disciplines. Though the competition focus is now on hunter, equitation, and show jumping, other disciplines and sports including dressage, driving, and barrel racing are regularly highlighted as special exhibitions.

As a qualifying show, competitors are accepted based on points earned throughout the year, which brings the top hunters in the country and jumpers from around the world to D.C. WIHS also hosts one of the 3’6″ “Big Eq” finals, making it an important goal for the best American junior riders.

Central to the WIHS mission are community outreach, education, and support for charitable organizations. To share its passion for horses and horse sport, WIHS has worked with a number of distinguished and nationally known partners, including the Smithsonian Institution, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and the National Museum of the Marine Corps, and has built relationships with the mounted police and local and national charitable organizations, such as EQUUS Foundation, PATH International and the Capital Breast Care Center.

Throughout its history, WIHS has had a close connection to the military community, and in recent years, Friday has been designated Military Night, with a powerful program blending exciting competition, such as the Puissance high jump, with recognition of our servicemen and women, support for its official military charity, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), demonstrations by the U.S. Army Caisson Platoon and an opportunity for military families to enjoy an evening of international-level show jumping and equestrian entertainment at no cost through its military ticket program.

In 2013, WIHS generated nearly $9.4 million in economic impact to the District of Columbia, according to a study conducted by Stephen S. Fuller, Ph.D., Dwight Schar Faculty Chair and Director of the Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University.

Since its debut, WIHS has been a Washington, D.C. institution attended by celebrities, business, military and diplomatic leaders, as well as countless horse enthusiasts of all ages. Washington International Horse Show Association, Ltd. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. For more information, please visit www.wihs.org.

Alltech National Horse Show Named a USEF Heritage Competition

Lexington, KY – July 24, 2013 – The Alltech National Horse Show announced today that it has been named an official USEF Heritage Competition. The legendary show made the successful move to its new home in Lexington, Kentucky in 2011. During the debut season at the Kentucky Horse Park, the show was named as the National Show Hunter Hall of Fame’s Horse Show of the Year and was ranked as the nation’s top show by the North American Riders Group (NARG).

Founded in 1883 at the original Madison Square Garden, the National Horse Show is America’s oldest indoor horse show, firmly established as a major fixture on the national and international sports and social event calendars.

The designation of a USEF Heritage Competition is reserved for competitions that have been established for a long period of time and have made substantial contribution toward the development and promotion of the sport, both within the broader community, by achieving, maintaining and promoting the equestrian ideals of the sportsmanship and competition.

Eligibility for the Heritage designation requires a minimum of 25 consecutive years of operation excluding any Act of God interruption and application by the Competition Licensee. “On behalf of the United States Equestrian Federation, I would like to congratulate the Alltech National Horse Show,” said USEF President Chrystine Tauber. “This show has been a part of the fabric of the American showing scene for more than a century.  The longevity, dedication to philanthropic efforts, and impact on the community, makes this competition a perfect example of what we look for when designating USEF Heritage Competitions.”

“Speaking for Alltech, the Board of Directors and all of our staff and management here at the Alltech National Horse Show, I’ve got to tell you how honored we are to receive this designation from our federation,” said Mason Phelps, Jr. the President of the National Horse Show Association. “With the unparalleled history and legacy of this great event, I can’t think of a horse show in this nation that is more deserving of the Heritage Competition designation.”

Bill Maroney, the President of the United States Hunter Jumper Association, commented on the designation. “The National Horse Show well deserves the USEF Heritage Competition designation. Longevity, community and excellence are synonymous with the National. Congratulations on receiving this recognition,” he said.

“We are extremely proud of the 130 years of commitment to providing a great competition in a world-class atmosphere,” Phelps went on to say. “We’re also proud of the service to our many wonderful charities and to the ASPCA in particular as the hosts of the ASPCA Maclay National Championship.”

Three Horse Shows Receive USEF Heritage Competition Honor

Lexington, KY – The United States Equestrian Federation Board of Directors, at its recent Annual Meeting, considered three applications for USEF Heritage Competition status. The Roanoke Valley Horse Show, the Norfolk Hunt Horse Show, and the Dressage at Devon Horse Show were granted the highest honor currently held by Federation horse shows.

The designation of a USEF Heritage Competition is reserved for competitions that have been in existence for a quarter-century or more, promoted and grown equestrian sport, and made contributions to the community outside the gates of the horse show by achieving, maintaining, and promoting the equestrian ideals of sportsmanship and competition.

“On behalf of the United States Equestrian Federation, I would like to congratulate the three shows that were appointed USEF Heritage Competitions at the Annual Meeting of our Board of Directors,” said USEF Chief Executive Officer John Long. “These shows have become a part of the fabric of the American showing scene. WESTPORT, CT – October 1, 2012 – The EQUUS Foundation and the Fairfield County Hunt Club are proud to announce that the Club’s June Benefit Horse Show was granted the coveted designation, Heritage Competition, by the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF). The Heritage designation is an honor bestowed by the USEF, the governing body of the equestrian sport, and is the highest honor that can be achieved by a horse show in the United States. Only 14 horse shows of the more than 2,600 USEF competitions across the United States can claim this distinction.

The EQUUS Foundation has been the show beneficiary since the Foundation was first established in 2003, and has awarded over $2 million in grants to charities that ensure the well-being of horses and foster the horse-human bond, especially for those with special needs. None of this would have been possible without the patronage of Fairfield County Hunt Club June Show. “Giving Back” has been a long standing commitment of the Fairfield County Hunt Club June Horse Show, with each of the more than 250 classes sponsored by an individual or local business making a donation to the show beneficiary.
