Sweeping across the Gulf Coast of Texas as a Category 4 hurricane over the past weekend, Hurricane Harvey’s catastrophic flooding has put the Houston and surrounding area equine community in a state of distress. Declared a major disaster and weather event, hundreds of horses and livestock have been affected.

Banding together as a community, emergency rescues, fellow equestrians opening up their barns for shelter and extensive veterinary care has been required over the last several days.  As the rain continues to fall, rising flood waters will make extended care for displaced large and small animals on an ongoing need.

Supporting the efforts of emergency response groups and organizations that are helping horses impacted by the flooding, US Equestrian is providing financial assistance through the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund.

Developed in 2005 during the aftermath of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund was formed to help ensure the safety and well-being of horses during trying times. Since its inception, over $370,000 has been donated to aid horses across all breeds in disaster-related situations. All money donated to the fund is strictly used to benefit horses and horse owners.

DONATE TO HELP HORSES

US Equestrian will be working with the Houston SPCA to support their rescue and rehabilitation efforts through the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund.

Encouraging donations to help the horses affected by Hurricane Harvey, US Equestrian CEO Bill Moroney said, “As part of our commitment to the health, welfare, and safety of horses, the USEF disaster relief fund was created to assist horses impacted by devastating natural disasters such as Hurricane Harvey. The outreach and generosity of the equestrian community to support the ongoing emergency assistance in this and future disasters allows us to provide direct financial assistance to the groups involved in the ongoing rescue efforts.”

Help Horses Affected by the Louisiana Flooding

Historic rainfall and flooding have put the equine community near Baton Rouge, La., in a state of distress. Declared a major disaster, hundreds of horses have been affected, requiring emergency rescues, temporary equine shelters, and extensive veterinary care.

Supporting the efforts of emergency response groups and organizations that are helping horses impacted by the flooding, the U.S. Equestrian Federation (USEF) is providing financial assistance through the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund.

Developed in 2005 during the aftermath of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund was formed to help ensure the safety and well-being of horses during trying times. Since its inception, over $350,000 has been given out to assist horses across all breeds. All money donated to the fund is strictly used to benefit horses and horse owners.

Helping lead efforts in providing equine rescue and care are the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine (LSU SVM), the Louisiana State Animal Response Team (LSART), Louisiana Veterinary Medical Association, and countless other organizations. Since flooding began, over 370 horses have been housed at shelters managed by the LSU SVM and LSART with staff, students, and volunteers providing 24-hour assistance.

For hundreds of horses, the journey to recovery is long from over. In an interview, Rebecca McConnico, DVM, Ph.D., professor of equine medicine at LSU and leader of the Louisiana State Animal Response Team, explained, “We see aspirational pneumonia from the flood waters; there is laminitis from standing in water and colic because (the horses) don’t have dry hay. You can spend $10,000 and still have a horse die.”

Encouraging the equine community to come together and help fellow horse owners and their horses, USEF CEO Bill Moroney said, “The USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund was created to provide assistance to our fellow equestrians when circumstances call for immediate relief. The generous support of our community has made it possible for us to support the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and welfare of horses affected by the devastating flooding in Louisiana.”

Horse Owners in Flood Ravaged Colorado Are in Need – Donate Now to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund

Lexington, KY – Historic flooding across Colorado has destroyed thousands of homes and farms. Thousands of horses have been displaced or are stranded across 4,500 square-miles of flood-ravaged terrain. This area is densely populated with horses, including many large breeding and training facilities all along the Front Range. Hay and feed are being airlifted to hundreds of stranded farm owners and delivered to hundreds more in dire need of feed for their horses. Recovery from a disaster of this magnitude will be arduous and ongoing, but not impossible. We need to remember that when the flooding stops, the recovery is only beginning. In times like these, the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) calls on you to aid fellow horse owners by donating to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund.

With the support of USEF CEO John Long, we ask that equestrians, equestrian fans, and all people who share a love for horses make a donation to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund. These recent storms have struck the heart of Colorado’s horse country and have made the cost of relocating, feeding, and caring for horses overwhelming. With your help we can do our part to make sure horses are not overlooked, forgotten, or abandoned, and help to relieve the burden of affected horse owners and caretakers in this, and in future, times of crisis. This fund was established with the goal of delivering aid in the most effective manner possible.

“It is important to understand this fund is a dollar in and a dollar out,” says Long. “Nothing is withheld.” Any donation to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund equates to timely and efficient help for horses and horse owners.

Originated during the aftermath of Hurricanes Rita and Katrina, the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund was formed to help ensure the safety and wellbeing of horses during trying times. Money donated to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund is used to prepare for disasters and assists any breed of equines that are victims of disasters, including but not restricted to hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, blizzards and fires. The USEF holds money donated to the fund in an account restricted for this purpose, and funds can only be disbursed upon the authorization of the USEF Chief Executive Officer.

Donations may be made online at www.usef.org by going to www.usef.org/_AUAIFrames/DisasterRelief/DisasterRelief.aspx.

KHC Contributes over $5,000 to USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund; Creates KY Relief Fund

Lexington, KY, August 28, 2012 – In the wake of the horrific tornado damage in Kentucky this spring, the Kentucky Horse Council (KHC) created an equine disaster relief fund aimed solely at Kentucky victims. KHC also contributed the remainder of its U.S. Equine Disaster Relief Fund to the United States Equestrian Federation’s (USEF) Equine Disaster Relief Fund, which aids disaster victims across the country.

In the past 3 years, when a state needed assistance with horses in need due to a natural disaster, the Kentucky Horse Council coordinated relief efforts through that state’s horse council or other local organizations. The agencies determined the needs of the affected horses, and KHC’s U.S. Equine Disaster Relief Funds were used to purchase feed, temporary fencing, and equine medical supplies.

Individuals and organizations across the nation have donated over $15,000 to the Kentucky Horse Council for national equine disaster relief. Horses in Texas, North Dakota, Minnesota, Vermont, New Mexico, Arizona, Alabama, Tennessee, and Kentucky have all been helped by this fund. After responding to the victims of tornadoes in Kentucky and surrounding states in the spring, a little over $5,000 remained in the U.S. Equine Disaster Relief Fund, and an additional $3,000 was donated and specifically earmarked for Kentucky horses.

A Call to Action: Colorado Wildfires – Donate Now to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund

Lexington, KY – Fires blazing across the Colorado landscape have together burned more than 100,000 acres in the past few weeks. The Waldo Canyon and High Park fires near Colorado Springs and Fort Collins respectively have ravaged the natural beauty of the area, destroyed nearby homes, and left many displaced people wondering what to do next. For horse owners that uncertainty is even greater. Hundreds of horses have already been displaced and, while local Horse Parks, Fairgrounds, and Equestrian Centers have graciously opened up to evacuated horses; the cost of caring for those horses magnifies the stresses of an already trying time. Efforts to help are already underway but outside assistance is badly needed.

With the support of CEO John Long, the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) asks that equestrians, equestrian fans, and all people who share a love for horses make a donation to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund. Cooler weather and calmer winds are helping firefighters in Colorado contain the blazes, but the cost of relocating, feeding, and caring for horses is a burden that local residents and humane societies will carry long after the fires have ceased to burn. With luck, many horses will be returning home soon, but some will have no home left to return to. With your help we can ensure that all affected horses are well cared for and help Colorado’s devastated communities re-build.

To most effectively deliver aid the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund was established with the goal of getting horses the help they need, when they need it. “It is important to understand this fund is a dollar in and a dollar out,” says John Long. “Nothing is withheld.” Any donation to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund is a timely and efficient benefit for horses and horse owners.

A Call to Action: Southeastern Tornadoes – Donate Now to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund

The duo of tornadic storms that devastated the southeast United States last week left a wake of splintered wood, shattered glass, downed power lines, despair and shock for the residents of towns like West Liberty, Kentucky and Harrisburg, Illinois to clean up and recover from. As if that weren’t enough, one of the region’s heaviest snowfalls of the year came down on Sunday night and further hindered an already difficult recovery process. For some effected residents the physical and monetary burdens of recovery are intensified by the need to care for their horse or horses. It is in times like these that the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) calls on you to aid them by donating to the USEF Equine Disaster Relief Fund.
