Mill Spring, NC – June 26, 2015 – Alex Granato of Salt Lake City, UT and Zenith Dance, owned by Page Tredennick, topped the $10,000 Horseware Ireland 1.45m Open Jumpers at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TEIC), besting a class of 20 entries to take the win. Angel Karolyi (VEN) and Wings, owned by Mclain Ward, finished in second, with Noel Fauntleroy of Manakin Sabot, VA aboard her own Cabras finishing in third. Competition continues at TIEC tomorrow with the highlight class of the week, the $127,000 Adequan® Grand Prix FEI CSI 3*. Gates to the facility will open at 6pm to the public and competition will begin at 8pm.

Granato climbed to the top of the leaderboard after riding a clear effort in the jump-off round, which saw eight combinations return, stopping the timers at 37.709 seconds. Granato has been riding the 2004 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Sydney x Terrificdence) for nearly two years after taking over the ride from Sarah Tredennick.

“I really liked the course today for my horse. He’s a very game and quick horse. The first round had a couple of good questions including some forward bending lines, like the line after the triple, that could throw you, but he rode really great today,” said Granato.

The duo made fast and efficient work of the course designed by Ken Krome (USA), which Granato explained suited the gray gelding, who has accumulated several top place finishes in a very successful competition campaign during their spring circuit.

“He handled it all very well, and it was a really fun jump-off for us. He was very on-point with all of the turns. He felt great today and was absolutely ready to do his job,” noted Granato. “We had a busy winter circuit in Wellington (FL) and did some post circuit shows down there where he won one of the Grand Prix classes, which was our first Grand Prix in a year. He’s done some of the children’s and amateur jumpers too. He’s just an all-around great guy.”

Granato is familiar with the TIEC facility, as he brought a string of horses to the venue last summer and fall, but has been blown away by the progress that the facility has made in the past six months since they last competed in November.

“We wanted to support the venue last year when it first opened and the changes from then to now are just crazy. We are leasing a farm right up the street so that we can stay based here during the summer. The facility is just amazing and we’re so impressed with how much has been done considering the amount of time,” he commented. “They are really in tune with the important things like the permanent buildings and the permanent barns. They make it comfortable for all of the horses, exhibitors, and spectators. I think it’s also important to touch on the amazing job they’ve done with the show too, just from the judging to the footing and everything in between. They’re doing it right.”

Tryon Summer 1 will also host the first of four consecutive ‘Saturday Night Lights’ competitions at TIEC, with gates opening at 6pm and competition beginning at 8pm. This week features the $127,000 Adequan® Grand Prix FEI CSI 3*. For more information on TIEC and for a full list of results, please visit www.tryon.com.

Welles and Boo Van Het Kastanjehof Win $34k Suncast 1.45 FEI Welcome at Tryon Summer 1

Mill Spring, NC – June 25, 2015 – The $34,000 Suncast® 1.45 FEI Welcome boasted the largest number of entries in the FEI division at Tryon Summer 1 to date, with 43 combinations testing the Ken Krome (USA) designed track in the George H. Morris Arena in the Tryon Stadium. The class, which started off the second day of competition at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) this week, was moved to the morning to help the FEI contenders escape the on-setting heat.

Andrew Welles (USA) and Boo Van Het Kastanjehof paid no mind to the increasing temperature and secured the win as the last pair to go in the 10-horse jump-off with a dominating time of 35.006 seconds. Mark Bluman (COL) and Uitteraard finished in second, crossing the timers in 35.842 seconds and Alise Oken (USA) aboard Kaid Du Ry rounded out the top three, completing the jump-off track in 36.276 seconds. FEI competition is highlighted at TIEC with the $127,000 Adequan® Grand Prix FEI CSI 3* on Saturday, June 26, with gates opening at 6pm and competition beginning at 8pm.

Welles was thrilled with the duo’s win and said “Boo” has been knocking on the winner circle’s door for quite some time now. The pair went last in the jump-off order following an incredibly quick round from Mark Bluman, which Welles didn’t anticipate beating.

“I’m absolutely overjoyed right now. I’ve had her for five years and probably been second in eight or nine Grand Prix classes, but we’ve never actually been able to pull off the win,” commented Welles. “I’ve never won a Grand Prix on her, and today is just a great start to the morning! I watched the first couple go and I saw Mark’s time and I thought I was riding for second. He was absolutely flying, and he rode as slick of a round as he could ride. I knew we were fast and to see that come up on the scoreboard was amazing.”

The course perfectly suited the pair, who typically excel in tight situations and have performed incredibly well during their time at TIEC, collecting a fourth place finish in the $210,000 Tryon Grand Prix for the Governor’s Cup presented by Rolex in Week 8 of the Tryon Spring Series.

“Ken Krome has been a great course designer for a very long time and I thought he built a very fair test and I think all of the horses will come out jumping just as good, if not better, than when they went into the ring,” commented Welles. “It was a great jump-off track and there were a lot of options. There were a lot of places to go fast and a lot of places where you could accumulate faults if you pushed the speed that way.”

Welles rode a risky and bold round in the jump-off, knowing that there were several areas around the course he could use to his advantage, which ultimately helped him slip into the coveted top spot.

“To be honest, I was fortunate to go last in the jump-off, and I think that’s where a lot of our second place finishes have come from. We always seem to have that happen and then someone catches me at the end,” he explained. “I talked to my friend John Roche before going in and he said, ‘If you do this, this, and maybe this, there’s a chance you can catch him,’ so I went for it.”

“Boo” has been a career altering horse for Welles, who attributes much of his success to the lessons he has learned from the 2001 Belgian Warmblood mare, owned by his father, Peter Welles.

“She’s just one of those horses that you will remember for your entire life. She, as of now, is absolutely the most important horse that I’ve ever had in my career and I think she will be for many years to come,” he remarked. “She’s a horse that I absolutely love to death. She’s a part of the family and my parents have been incredibly supportive of my career. In the barn she knows she’s in charge. It’s her barn and we all work for her.”

Welles’ team has called TIEC home for several weeks and he is planning to keep the venue as a staple in their competition schedule for years to come. Based in Kentucky, the trip is worth it according to Welles, who commented he’s never seen his horses so content at a competition.

“This facility is absolutely amazing and I think that just going into the ring, each of us feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to compete at a facility of this caliber and I personally want to thank Mark Bellissimo, Roger Smith, and the entire team for putting this show on,” he said. “I know it’s unseasonably hot and I want to thank J. P. Godard and the rest of the crew to make the decision to allow us to go at 8am. My horses are so relaxed and it has been an absolute pleasure to compete here.”

Tryon Summer 1 will continue with FEI competition hosting the first of four consecutive ‘Saturday Night Lights’ competitions at TIEC on Saturday, June 27, with the $127,000 Adequan® Grand Prix CSI 3* with gates opening at 6pm and competition beginning at 8pm. Vanderveen Makes Mark at Tryon International Equestrian Center with Second Career FEI Win

Mill Spring, NC – June 24, 2015 – Kristen Vanderveen (USA) and Bull Run’s Eternal flew to the top of the leaderboard in the $34,000 1.50m Speed Stake at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), collecting her second career FEI win at the venue, completing the track in 66.12 seconds. Ljubov Kochetova (RUS) and Balou Du Reventon finished second in 71.1 seconds. Upcoming American talent Wilton Porter (USA) and Delinquent JX followed in third, crossing the timers in 71.18 seconds. The $34,000 1.50m Speed Stake marked the start of FEI competition at the Tryon Summer Series, which will offer four consecutive weeks of FEI competition to competitors from around the world. Competition at Tryon Summer 1 will continue through Sunday, June 28, and the Tryon Summer Series will conclude on Sunday, July 19.

Vanderveen and Bull Run’s Eternal, a seasoned pair, dominated the course and tripped the timers five seconds faster than second place finisher Kochetova and Balou Du Reventon. Vanderveen, known for her speedy style, feels confident in the speed classes aboard Bull Run’s Eternal, as he uses the length of his stride to a complete advantage in the ring. The course, designed by Ken Krome (USA), was held in the George H. Morris Arena in Tryon Stadium. There were 16 clear trips, with only Vanderveen finishing below the 70-second mark, out of 29 class entries.

“Winning always feels awesome. I love doing the speed classes on him because I’ve had him the longest out of all of my horses and I know him really well. Walking it today, I had a great feeling and it absolutely suited him,” she commented. “He’s great with turns because he uses his big step really well. We can slice right into some of the distances and leave out some strides, which is where we were able to pick up the win.”

Bull Run’s Eternal excels at keeping his composure in the ring, which allows Vanderveen to ask for adjustments quite easily throughout their trip. According to Vanderveen, riding him is like putting on an old glove and their connection helps the duo to tackle any type of pressure situation in the ring.

“It’s amazing how he can just cut in and hold his big canter and take out a lot of strides. He’s such a big horse so you wouldn’t think that he would be competitive in the speed classes, but he is,” she said. “He’s my comfort ride. He always makes me feel like I know what I’m doing. I’ve had him for almost three years and he was my first ‘real’ horse. He’s conventional in what he does and absolutely loves his job. He has really helped me step into the ranks and has given me the confidence I’ve needed in these type of classes.”

Accumulating top finishes throughout the Tryon season, Vanderveen continues to prove herself as a consistent and gritty talent at the upper levels of the sport. Vanderveen will contest the next three weeks of the Tryon Summer Series and will bring out three top mounts for the highly anticipated Tryon Summer 3 CSI 4*, which is a significant accomplishment for any rider so early on in their career.

“I’m incredibly excited to be bringing three horses out for the CSI 4* in two weeks. It’s nice to have several horses that are capable of competing at that level because there are so many classes and opportunities to take advantage of,” remarked Vanderveen. “Bull Run’s Eternal will jump once more this week and then will get next week off before we start prepping for the 4* week and we’ll give that a whirl,” she smiled.

FEI competition continues at TEIC with the $34,000 Suncast 1.45m Welcome FEI tomorrow beginning at 8am. Tryon Summer 1 will also host the first of four consecutive ‘Saturday Night Lights’ competitions at TIEC, with gates opening at 6pm and competition beginning at 8pm.
