Haley Gassel and Quite Dark 2 Make Statement in $10,000 Under 25 Welcome Classic; Cathy Geitner Bests 3′ Pre-Green Division aboard Keepsake

Mill Spring, NC – July 9, 2015 – The luck of the Irish continued in the George H. Morris Arena at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), as David Blake (IRL) aboard Binkie, owned by Pine Hollow Farm, captured their third FEI win at TIEC this season. Blake piloted Binkie to the only double-clear round in the $34,000 Suncast® Classic 1.50m FEI, edging out Alison Robitaille (USA) and Cassinja, who dropped a rail in the jump-off, finishing in 39.84 seconds. Blake and Binkie crossed the timers in 45.38 seconds with a clear round in hand to secure the win. Kristen Vanderveen (USA) and Bull Run’s Testify finished in third, with a single time fault in the first round of competition. Tryon Summer 2 continues through Sunday, July 12, with the entire Summer Series concluding on July 19.

Binkie and Blake have made their mark in the George H. Morris Arena at TIEC, collecting several wins and top finishes throughout the Tryon Spring and Summer Series, with a highlight win in the $127,000 Adequan® Grand Prix on June 27 during Tryon Summer 1.

Blake drew the last ride in the first round of competition on Thursday, a situation he has become accustomed too, also riding last in his win two weeks ago. With a tough track designed by Ana Catalina Harris (MEX), Blake was able to observe and find the best possible route to cross through the timers with no faults.

“I had a lot of time to watch and figure out the course today. I got a great draw in going last. I thought the end of the course was causing a lot of problems. Having a time fault or knocking the double down seemed to be the struggle, so I knew I needed to be careful, but also keep a close eye on the time,” he remarked. “It was hard to deliver both, which is where a lot of riders got caught. I decided to open up a bit on the backside of the course and I rode it so that the double was almost slowing down and that helped me with time and jumping through clean. It worked out really well.”

Blake explained that going last in the order has allowed him to give his 2006 Dutch Warmblood gelding (Larino x Whisper B) several educational rides, but the position does give the rider a mental edge. Blake has proven he can overcome the pressure to ride consistent fault-free rounds in make-it-or-break-it circumstances.

“I was in the same scenario during the grand prix two weeks ago and it’s a nice position to be in, but also puts on a lot of pressure on to get the job done. I know he’s a great jumper and I never really worry about him pulling a rail. I absolutely trust him and feel confident that he can go around clean every time we get into the ring,” commented Blake.

The duo’s consistency has kept them atop the leaderboard in the larger FEI classes offered at TIEC amongst a slew of talented international names and Blake sees Binkie as a real contender at the top levels. His laid back personality and willingness to fight in the ring are all signs that the best is yet to come.

“He’s been incredibly consistent for me since his first win at Spring 7. That was the first time that we really started to bring him out at this level. He’s young and I always have to remember that because I don’t want to overdo it,” he said. “We’re lucky that so far he hasn’t had to go very fast in the jump-off and that’s better for a young horse. He’s getting great experience and I’m thrilled with him so far this season.”

Giving Binkie time to recuperate from a string of stellar performances at Tryon Summer 1, Blake was impressed with the gelding’s efficiency and carefulness in the ring today. “He felt super. He had last week off and it’s great for him to come back now in the same good form he left with after his big win on Saturday night,” he said.

“The prize money here is as good as anywhere in the world and we’re in top form here,” added Blake. “The team and the horses are happy and I am truly grateful for the opportunity. I’m thankful to the Dvorkin family and the Pine Hollow Farm team for making these wins possible. It wouldn’t happen without them.”

Haley Gassel Makes Statement in $10,000 Under 25 Welcome Classic

Haley Gassel of Lenoir City, TN made a swift move up the leaderboard in the $10,000 Under 25 Welcome Classic aboard Quite Dark 2 owned by Westwind Equine Training Center, as the last rider on course in the class of 23 entries. Gassel and Quite Dark 2 tripped the timers in 33.743 seconds to edge out Kira Kerkorian of Sagaponack, NY and Cassi, who placed second in 33.864 seconds. Lucas Porter of Bartonsville, TX and Phineas finished in third place with a time of 34.24 seconds. The class was postponed from its scheduled Wednesday finish to Thursday morning as a result of inclement weather.

Haley Gassel and Quite Dark

Gassel piloted Quite Dark 2 to victory in an immediate jump-off format. Gassel and “QD”, as she calls him around the barn, are coming off of a third-place finish in last week’s $15,000 Under 25 Grand Prix and captured their first TIEC win this season today.

“I thought it was very reasonable for a Welcome. I didn’t think it was too big for this early in the week and it was technical, which proved to be difficult. The time allowed was tight and usually I have time faults, so I was a bit nervous about that going in,” she explained. “It ended up working out great – you have to make these courses hard enough for this level of competition.”

Gassel’s massive 2005 Holsteiner gelding (Quality x Elegaz) has an aura about him in the ring and his confident attitude allows the duo to immediately find their stride in big-atmosphere arenas.

“He’s really strong and his size can be intimidating. He’s about 17.3 hands and has a very stocky build, but he is brave and always takes me to the jumps,” she explained. “I could miss or I could be spot on and I know he’s always going to get to the other side. He loves being in the spotlight and that’s why he excels in these types of classes.”

Gassel and Quite Dark 2 will be back looking to add to their top placings on Friday in the $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix in the George H. Morris Arena. As the pair generates more buzz around the show grounds, Gassel is hoping that one day she will be able to represent the United States in team competition like a Nations Cup, as she represented Zone 4 at the 2014 Adequan® FEI North American Junior & Young Rider Championships and thoroughly enjoyed riding with a team.

“It was a great experience and QD really took it in stride. I loved the team competition atmosphere and would love to have the opportunity to do it again. We started off at 1.20m and have worked up from there pretty quickly. They’re big goals, but that’s part of the fun too, getting there and enjoying the process,” she smiled.

Cathy Geitner Bests 3′ Pre-Green Division aboard Keepsake

Cathy Geitner of Aiken, SC typically handles the day-to-day operations of Daniel Geitner Stables, letting her husband, Daniel Geitner, do the legwork in the ring, but today Cathy stole the show, championing the 3′ Pre-Green Hunters aboard 2009 Dutch Warmblood mare Keepsake. Daniel followed with Reserve Champion awards aboard Douglas.

“She’s just six and we imported her this spring. We’ve been taking it slow and doing a few shows here and there and some training at home,” said Geitner. “This is probably her third show in the U.S. and she really came into her own this week. She’s just the coolest little mare and was super today.”

The mare finished with blue ribbons in both over fences classes in yesterday’s portion of the division with Geitner piloting from the irons, also collecting a second place in the under saddle hack.

“She’s a super jumper and is so brave. She has a ton of scope and when I go in there I don’t worry about the jumps at all, it is more on keeping her focused and helping her learn what her job is in the ring,” she explained.

Keepsake has incredible natural ability and will make an excellent prospect for the future. Geitner is looking to move the mare to the First Year division when they return to Florida for the winter season.

“We’re bringing her out slowly and taking our time because she’s really nice and I think she is going to be amazing next year as a First Year,” remarked Geitner. “We’re being very picky about which shows we take her to and are keeping it completely positive for her. I’m really thrilled with the way she’s coming along.”

As for beating her husband, Geitner was all smiles and said it takes a very special horse to get her back in the ring and the little mare convinced her to give it a go.

“I really don’t compete that much. I like to focus on training and coaching our juniors and amateurs, but this mare is also small and fit me a little bit better than she would have fit Daniel,” she laughed. “We’re really excited for her future and I’m glad that I was able to really show her off here this week.”

Competition at TIEC continues tomorrow with the $34,000 1.45m FEI Speed Stake, $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby, and the $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix. Richie Moloney and Alsvid Start Off Tryon Summer 3 with Win in $34,000 Tryon 1.45m Challenge

Mill Spring, NC – July 8, 2015 – Starting off the third week of the Tryon Summer Series by making a major statement, Richie Moloney (IRL) and Alsvid took the first FEI class of the week in good form with a speedy jump-off round clocking in at 36.375 seconds to take the win at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Kristen Vanderveen (USA) had a strong showing with both her mounts, finishing second and third aboard Bull Run’s Eternal in 36.861 seconds and Bull Run’s Faustino De Tili in 39.539 seconds, respectively. Tryon Summer 3 competition continues Thursday with the $34,000 Suncast 1.50m FEI Welcome Classic. The Tryon Summer Series will conclude on July 19.

Moloney has had a very successful run at TIEC, taking a huge win in the $210,000 Tryon Grand Prix for the Governor’s Cup FEI CSI 4* on June 6 with Carrabis Z, owned by Equinimity, LLC. Aboard the seasoned Alsvid, a 2001 Hanoverian gelding, Moloney added another victory today besting a class of 31. The course, designed by Ana Catalina Harris (MEX), saw 15 pairs move forward to the jump-off, with only three double clear rounds.

“It was a nice course for the first day of the week and there was a good few in the jump-off I thought,” said Moloney. “There weren’t very many double clears and I thought it was a very good jump-off. It suited me because it fit very well with my horse. He excels with the tight turns and there was a tight turn back to fence one, which worked out really well.”

Vanderveen was tight on Moloney’s heels, piloting her two mounts to top-three finishes, but couldn’t catch the Irishman. Alsvid has been knocking on the door with Moloney for quite some time, accumulating several top finishes during the winter circuit in Wellington, FL, but never taking the coveted top spot.

“He’s fourteen and he’s been in the barn since he was five. He’s everyone’s favorite,” commented Moloney. “He’s just the sweetest horse to work with, and he’s great at these types of classes. We’ll aim for a few more like this with him this season. He never was able to get those wins in Florida and I’m so happy that we were able to get it done today.”

As the reigning FEI CSI 4* Grand Prix winner at TIEC, Moloney is looking for a repeat this weekend in the $210,000 Asheville Regional Airport Grand Prix FEI CSI 4*.

“I’m looking forward to the Grand Prix this weekend. I’ll have Carrabis Z and he did so well last time out in the CSI 4*. I’ll definitely be looking for another win. It would be great to see him repeat the same consistency under the lights,” noted Moloney.

“We’ve been showing a lot here and after next week we’re taking three weeks off and then we’re going to aim for the Hamptons, Gold Cup, Central Park then back here for the Fall Series,” he explained. “It’s great and we’ve had a good time here. The facility is just great and they’re still improving things and making the show the absolute best it can be. It feels like home.”

Competition at TIEC continues tomorrow with the $34,000 Suncast®1.45m FEI Welcome beginning at 9am. For a full list of results and a weekly competition schedule, please visit www.tryon.com.

Colvin Adds Another Tryon Summer Win in $15,000 Under 25 Grand Prix aboard BetterTimes

Mill Spring, NC – July 5, 2015 – Victoria Colvin of Loxahatchee, FL continued her hot streak today with a win in the $15,000 Under 25 Grand Prix aboard BetterTimes, owned by Heritage Farm, at the conclusion of the Tryon Summer 2 show at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Colvin and BetterTimes finished the jump-off with a time of 46.824 seconds, followed by Wilton Porter of Bartonville, TX aboard Delinquent JX stopping the timers in 41.344 seconds with four faults. Haley Gassel of Lenoir City, TN and Quite Dark 2 rounded out the top three, completing the jump-off with eight faults and a time of 42.086 seconds. The Tryon Summer Series will begin again on Wednesday, July 8, with the start of Tryon Summer 3, hosting a week of FEI CSI 4* competition.

Colvin, who was also champion of the $10,000 1.45 Horseware Ireland Open Jumper on Friday aboard Lumiere, found herself in the winner’s circle again today, capping an impressive week for the 17-year-old star.

“The course today had a lot of turns and only two direct lines, but it’s my kind of course because once you find those distances you’re there,” remarked Colvin. “She felt a little backed off in the first round, but really went for it in the jump-off, which I was happy with.”

“All four riders that went before me had some rails so I knew that I needed to go slow and clean, especially since she was a little bit nervous in the first round and I aimed to put in a clear and smooth round, which is exactly what she did,” explained Colvin. “I knew if I had a rail it was going to be tough, but I wanted to give her the best ride possible.”

Colvin and BetterTimes are relatively new to each other and their partnership is beginning to flourish, as Colvin’s experience helps to calm the mare’s nerves in the ring. BetterTimes has natural talent and ability, which will make her a great ride in the future according to Colvin.

“She’s a nine-year-old mare so she’s still pretty young in terms of what she’s doing. We got her from Europe and Andre gave her to me to ride and she’s been great. We haven’t done too much with her yet, but she’s a great mare. She’s not the most careful at this point, but she’s incredibly scopey,” she commented.

“She’s really quiet and is very sweet. She’s always happy with her ears up and very fun to be around, especially to ride,” noted Colvin.

Colvin’s first class under the lights on Saturday night at TIEC was a good test and she will use the experience to help prepare her for future Grand Prix competitions. In only the second time showing her new mount, Echo Von T Spieveld, Colvin performed well and the duo will look to build on their results from last night.

“It was fun and I thought he was really good for our first time together under the lights. He was a little bit nervous, but he went really well. I was pleased with how we did and will look to improve on it next time out,” she commented.

Competition at Tryon International Equestrian Center will begin on Wednesday, July 8, with the start of Tryon Summer 3. For more information on TIEC and for a full list of results, please visit www.tryon.com.

Schuyler Riley and Dobra De Porceyo Triumph in $127,000 Ariat Grand Prix at Tryon Summer 2

Mill Spring, NC – July 4, 2015 – Schulyer Riley (USA) and Dobra De Porceyo captured the biggest win of the duo’s career together in the $127,000 Ariat® Grand Prix FEI CSI 3* under the lights in the George H. Morris Arena in the Tryon Stadium at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC). Riley and Dobra De Porceyo stopped the jump-off timers in 45.129 seconds as the only double-clear round of the night, beating out Angel Karolyi (VEN) and Venus, who finished in second place. Filip De Wandel (BEL) and his mount Gentley rounded out the top three with a time of 46.158 seconds and four faults. Competition continues at TIEC tomorrow with the $15,000 Under 25 Grand Prix beginning at 8am. The Tryon Summer Series will continue through Sunday, July 19.

Riley and Dobra De Porceyo took a methodical approach to Saturday night’s class, designed by Hector Loyola (PRI), as both tracks were big and technical. Riley cruised through the first round of competition and laid down the only clear round in the jump-off to secure the win.

“I walked the course and thought it was quite difficult for the level and horses can always react differently under the lights. I was confident with Dobra because she’s been here and performed very well and she has quite a bit of experience at night,” commented Riley. “I felt like she was a little bit high in the beginning, especially over the triple bar, which was not my favorite part of the ride, but then we just smoothed it out and it was like nothing for her. She jumps everything so easily.”

Entering the ring for the jump-off, Riley knew that she needed not only a fast time, but a clear round as the skilled and notoriously fast Karolyi was following her in the order of go.

“I knew that I had Angel behind me and he was the one I was the most concerned about because he is extremely fast. He did go faster than me, but I was just a bit luckier tonight,” said Riley. “I’m really so happy right now. I’ve had a few jump-offs where I try to go fast but get conservative with her at the end and I really let her open up to the last jump. I’m thrilled. She was just amazing.”

The win capped a dry spell for Riley, who has waited patiently for another top finish at the Grand Prix level. Their win also marked Dobra’s first win in a Grand Prix as the 2006 CDE mare (Action Breaker x Sanne) competed in her first Grand Prix last fall.

“This is my first Grand Prix win in probably two or three years and it’s the first Grand Prix that she’s ever won, so this is a very exciting and special night for us. She’s just nine and we did her first Grand Prix last fall at indoors at Kentucky National. She really stepped up this past winter in Florida,” noted Riley. “We just know each other so well the hardest part is trying not to tell her too much. We try to keep a very clear and smooth communication, and she always looks to do the right thing for you.”

Angel Karolyi and Venus
Angel Karolyi and Venus

The mare has been under Riley’s guidance for most of her career, as she purchased her as a difficult and moody six-year-old. The duo formed an inseparable bond, which was evident to the crowd tonight, as they made easy work of two technical tracks.

“She was tough. She was really difficult at the beginning and she’s a chestnut mare,” she smiled. “I took my time with her and let her know that we were going to work as a team and I was never going to try and overpower her. We channeled all of her fiery energy into what I have now. She’s probably one of my most favorite horses that I’ve ever sat on.”

Riley has stationed herself at TIEC for the majority of the Spring and Summer Series, as the venue is offering East Coast riders the ability to contest FEI competitions throughout the season, which is something the area desperately needed, according to Riley.

“I’m completely blown away and impressed by how they have developed this venue. It was built for the top of the sport and it’s what the sport is asking for right now,” she explained. “There was a big void on the East Coast for FEI competitions with great prize money and atmosphere, and they’ve absolutely delivered. For some of the riders that aren’t in the financial situation to travel to Europe or Calgary, they’ve made top sport feasible for everyone.”

Trialing closely behind Riley during the prize-giving ceremony, with a beaming smile, was groom of six-and-a-half years, Jesus Pimentel, the main caretaker of Dobra De Porceyo. Pimentel was thrilled with the team’s win tonight and was honored to receive the second Groom’s Initiative Award at TIEC.

“I think it’s amazing what they’re doing now with the grooms because usually most people don’t see everything behind the scenes. We really enjoy doing this job and it is great to be recognized. It means so much to me. I feel so honored,” said Pimentel.

The relationship he maintains with Dobra is something very special and he rarely leaves the mare’s sight. Grooming as a professional for more than eleven years, starting at the young age of 16, Pimentel has become a mainstay at Riley’s Wolfstone Stables.

“She’s been amazing and we’ve gotten really close in the top ribbons, but tonight feels really special. She’s the sweetest horse ever. When you walk with her she always makes faces at you and I love her personality,” he smiled. “I love this job. I love working with the animals and I think that’s why I always try to do my best because I really care about them. They’re my family.”

Tryon Summer 2 will conclude tomorrow, Sunday, July 5, with the highlight $15,000 Under 25 Grand Prix in the George Morris Arena in the Tryon Stadium beginning at 8am. For more information on TIEC and for a full list of results, please visit www.tryon.com.

Colvin and Lumiere Finish Strong in $10,000 1.45m Horseware Ireland Open Jumpers at TIEC

Mill Spring, NC – July 3, 2015 – The third day of Tryon Summer 2 competition at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) was marked with a big win for top talent Victoria Colvin, of Loxahatchee, FL, as she bested the $10,000 Horseware Ireland 1.45m Open Jumpers aboard Lumiere. Sharn Wordley (NZL) and Charline 28 finished second with Schuyler Riley of Wellington, FL and Carlisco bringing home third place honors. Competition at Tryon Summer 2 will continue through Sunday, July 5. The venue will host the $127,000 Ariat® Grand Prix tomorrow night, Saturday, July 4, beginning at 8pm. Gates will open to the public at 6pm. The Tryon Summer Series, hosting four consecutive weeks of FEI competition, will conclude on Sunday, July 19.

Colvin and Lumiere, a 2004 Oldenburg gelding owned by Peacock Ridge, LLC, pulled together two fantastic rounds to take a speedy handle on the class of 32 entries, racing to a strong finish in 33.055 seconds to beat out Wordley, who finished the jump-off track in 36.238 seconds. Colvin took over the ride on Lumiere during the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) and has excelled on the feisty gelding ever since.

“He’s a very quick horse naturally so I was just planning on putting in a neat and tidy round today,” she commented. “I wanted to push for it in the jump-off, but not go too fast because that’s where we sometimes get in trouble. He felt great, and I’m really proud of his effort today.”

Originally purchased for another client at Andre Dignelli’s Heritage Farm, Lumiere proved to be a perfect fit for Colvin, who competed him in the Medium Junior Jumper division during the WEF circuit. Not sure if the gelding would be able to reach the top levels of the sport, Colvin and Dignelli have been pleasantly surprised by his willingness to step up in the bigger classes.

“He’s definitely feisty. He gets very quick after he hears the buzzer sound, and I think that can be a little frightening if you don’t expect it. We didn’t think he would be consistent at this level, but he’s completely exceeded our expectations,” she commented. “He takes more of a leg focused ride. I have to be really quiet with my hands because he can get offended if he feels you trying to take over with your hands. The forward movement has really helped him to feel comfortable in these bigger classes.”

Heading to the Adequan®/FEI North American Junior Young Rider Championships (NAJYRC) in Lexington, KY at the end of the month aboard Lumiere, Colvin is hopeful that the duo will continue their winning ways through the rest of their season together. The pair will also contest the $15,000 Under 25 Grand Prix on Sunday at TIEC, alongside Colvin’s other mount, Bettertimes, owned by Heritage Farm.

“I’m really excited for NAJYRC and am looking forward to taking him there because I think we have the potential to do really well. He’s been a great ride for me,” she remarked. “He’ll do the Under 25 Grand Prix on Sunday, which he did well in last week too. I feel like we’re hitting our stride at the right point in the season.”

Sharn Wordley and Charline 28

One of the country’s most talented young riders, Colvin continues to dominate in the hunter ring and is gaining confidence in the jumper ring as well. Her mount, Echo Von T Spieveld, owned by Take The High Road, LLC, is an exciting new partnership for Colvin, who she hopes will be a great Grand Prix horse for her this year.

“He’s just adorable. He was gelded about a year ago so he can be a little studdish when you first get on, but that’s what I like about him. He’s a fighter in the ring. We have formed a really close relationship already, and I think he’s the real deal,” she explained. “He’ll do the Grand Prix tomorrow night, and my goal is to start doing some of the bigger Grand Prix classes with him come fall and throughout the indoor season.”

Colvin has thoroughly enjoyed her stay at TIEC and is looking forward to coming back after the Heritage Farm team departs for Kentucky next week. She noted, “This is just a beautiful showground. When everything is finished, this is going to be the place to be. There is going to be some incredible stuff here in the future.”

The $127,000 Ariat® Grand Prix will begin at 8pm Saturday, July 4, with an array of family fun and entertainment beginning between 5pm-6pm. For a full list of results and weekly schedule, please visit www.tryon.com.

Angel Karolyi and Venus Win $34,000 Suncast 1.45 FEI Welcome at Tryon Summer 2

Mill Spring, NC – July 2, 2015 – The second day of FEI competition continued at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) with the $34,00 Suncast® 1.45m FEI Welcome. Venezuela’s Angel Karolyi collected a big win aboard 2002 Dutch Warmblood mare, Venus, owned by Raylyn Farms. The duo bested a six-horse jump-off, tripping the timers in 40.341 seconds to secure Karolyi’s first FEI win at TIEC this season. Kaitlin Campbell (USA) aboard veteran mount Rocky W followed in second, finishing in 41.021 seconds. Liubov Kochetova (RUS) and Balou Du Reventon rounded out the top three with a time of 41.893 seconds. Tryon Summer 2 will continue through Sunday, July 5, hosting the $127,000 Ariat® Grand Prix on Saturday, July 4, with gates opening to the public at 6pm and competition beginning at 8pm.

The class saw 40 combinations test the course designed by Hector Loyola (PRI), who will continue to serve as the FEI course designer in the George H. Morris Arena in the Tryon Stadium for the remainder of Tryon Summer 2 competition. Karolyi and Venus have performed very well at TIEC and finally clinched a victory that was seemingly long overdue.

“Today’s track definitely seemed difficult when I walked it this morning. There were turns right out of the corners to the triple bar and triple combination and I thought both questions would be pretty testing,” said Karolyi. “The open water line was also tight, so overall I thought it was a great course for the class.”

“There were more clear rounds than I expected and I thought from the beginning of the class that the jump-off would be really quick and fast,” he remarked. “There were a couple turns that I didn’t see people trying and I took a big risk to the last inside turn and that helped. I saw a line that most of the people I had talked with didn’t think was there, but I found it on course and just needed to ride it very accurately to make it happen, so I went for it.”

Karolyi and Venus have had spectacular spring and summer seasons at TIEC, racking up several top five finishes and consistently qualifying for jump-off rounds in many of their classes together. The mare really tries according to Karolyi, which is what makes her so special in the ring.

“She’s a super horse. She always tries her hardest. She’s very scopey and I think we’ve gotten a little unlucky in terms of actually pulling out a win. She was really good here in the spring,” he continued. “We made some adjustments after watching my videos on her and she’s handled them really well. She placed fifth last week in the big Grand Prix and fifth in the FEI Speed last week too.”

The mare continues to thrive under Karolyi’s guidance and the duo seems to always be in the mix during all of their classes. Venus has an impressive competition background, as both Kent Farrington and Marilyn Little were instrumental in giving the mare top international experience before Karolyi took over the ride last year.

“I’m really happy for her that we were able to win this class. She is always working so hard for me and she deserves this win. I know she’s always right there at the top and I think this win is exactly what we needed,” he noted.

A familiar face around the venue with an impressive and seemingly ever-growing string of horses competing, TIEC has provided an opportunity for Karolyi to compete at the highest levels of the sport, while also helping to bring some of his new mounts into the spotlight.

“Mark Bellissimo and the partners have done an incredible job developing this facility and I think it’s going to continue building on the success it has already seen so far this year,” he commented. “The venue is going to bring a lot of big events here in the future and I’m looking forward to watching it unfold.”

The $127,000 Ariat® Grand Prix will begin at 8pm on Saturday, July 4, with an array of family fun and entertainment beginning between 5pm-6pm. For a full list of results and weekly schedule, please visit www.tryon.com.

Tom Foley Saves Best for Last in the $34k 1.50m FEI Speed Stake at Tryon Summer 2

Mill Spring, NC – July 1, 2015 – Competition at Tryon Summer 2 began today with a strong showing by Ireland’s Tom Foley aboard 2005 Swedish Warmblood mare, Beluga, owned by Spy Coast Farm, LLC. The duo kicked off the week with a win in the $34,000 1.50m Speed Stake hosted at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), the first of three FEI classes to be held throughout the duration of the competition week. Tryon Summer 2 will continue through Sunday, July 5, with festivities beginning at 6pm for the Fourth of July holiday on Saturday. The entire four-week Tryon Summer Series will conclude on July 19.

Foley and Beluga dashed to an exciting finish as the last pair on the Hector Loyola (PRI) designed course, which saw 39 contestants. Several pairs hit the 60-second mark, but Foley’s 59.56 was just enough to top the class. Riding last in the order was an advantage for Foley, as he had watched and planned the route he knew could secure the win. Sarah Segal (USA) and Cantara 59 led for most of the class, with a time of 60.061 seconds. Fellow Irishman Lorcan Gallagher and Esquina Van Klapscheut collected third place, stopping the timers in 60.145 seconds.

“When we walked the course I thought it looked very good. It was a nice course. I knew it was going to be a fast and hard test. There were a lot of people going in front of me in the class that were going to go fast,” commented Foley. “I have a great horse. I have to thank Shane Sweetnam for giving me the ride and to Lisa Lourie, the owner of Spy Coast Farm, for supporting me. It’s been great to have these kinds of opportunities and I’m so grateful.”

Foley and Sweetnam have both been competitive aboard Beluga, with Foley campaigning the mare through the fall season and at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, FL this past winter. Sweetnam competed Beluga at TIEC during the Tryon Spring Series, where the duo collected several top three finishes, including a third place finish in the 1.45m Challenge at Tryon Spring 7 and a first place in the $3,000 1.40m Open Jumper at Tryon Spring 8.

“I rode her last fall and into the winter before one of our clients began competing her at WEF. Shane took on the ride after and when he was here at Tryon a few weeks ago, he asked me to compete her again when he headed to Spruce Meadows,” explained Foley of the mare’s experienced background. “I was delighted and it’s worked out great. She’s a phenomenal mare and I’m excited to see where we can go from here.”

The athletic mare excels in the larger speed classes, which Foley will continue to contest throughout the week. With a strong line-up of horses slated to compete at TIEC in the coming weeks, Foley is hoping to translate the momentum from his win today into a week of top results.

“After today, I’d like to piece together some good wins throughout the rest of the week. Right now, that type of consistency is exactly what we’re looking for,” said Foley. “My ultimate goal is to get out there and start winning the big Grand Prix classes, like ones here on a Saturday night. I’m focused on working hard to get to that point and wins like today are a big motivation.”

Foley’s first time at TIEC marked a win in his first ever class at the venue. With strong start in hand, Foley is looking forward to continuing his season at TIEC and what the venue will bring to the sport in the years to come.

“This is my first time here and it’s just a fantastic facility. I think when everything is completed it’s going to be one of the best facilities in the world. I’m really glad that we are spending time here and will make sure to take advantage of everything this place has to offer,” he remarked.

FEI competition at TIEC continues tomorrow with the $34,000 Suncast®1.45m Welcome in the George H. Morris Arena at Tryon Stadium. The $127,000 Ariat® Grand Prix will begin at 8pm on Saturday, July 4, with an array of family fun and entertainment beginning at 6pm. Wyndmont Inc. Kicks Off Tryon Summer Series with Top Honors

Michael Dorman and Zephyr.

Tryon, NC – June 30, 2015 – After several top finishes during Tryon Spring, the horses and riders of Wyndmont Inc. remained a staple on the leader board during the Tryon Summer I CSI3*.

On Thursday, Michael Dorman with Zephyr and Candice King aboard Cuchica went head-to-head in the 1.45m Open Jumpers, delivering clear rounds to advance to the jump-off. At the wire, it was Dorman and Zephyr who claimed the blue ribbon, with King and Cuchica just tenths of a second behind to finish second.

“We were thrilled with both horses,” smiled Dorman. “I am just coming back from an injury, so it was nice to get that win with Zephyr under our belts. He felt really good. Zephyr is naturally a very fast horse, and there was a left turn to the last jump that we took advantage of.”

“Cuchica is an exciting 8-year-old and that was his first 1.45m class,” noted King. “I went before Michael and wanted to have smooth clear round. He jumped really well and rode nicely. Michael and Zephyr have a long, great history, so I felt good even being second behind him knowing that we just moved up. Michael had a great win”

Dorman, Ronnie Beard’s partner at Wyndmont Inc., was back in the irons Friday on Cas in the 1.30m Open Jumpers. The pair went clear and was just behind the time to beat, earning the second-place spot.

“Cas is a young horse and this is his first year showing,” explained Dorman. “He started in the Schooling Jumpers. That class was a milestone for him because he went really fast. He felt very comfortable with that kind of speed, and it was the first time I had gone that quickly with him. He handled it really well and is maturing quickly.”

In the $34,000 FEI 1.50m Speed Stake, proven winning combination King and Valinski S returned to face off against a field of 29 horses. The duo went clear, but fell behind the leading times by a mere second, settling for a respectable seventh-place finish.

“I went early in the class,” said King. “I tried to just put in a quick clear to try and be at the top. It was just fractions separating the leaders, so I was very pleased. He had just come off two weeks of not showing and it was our first class in the ring, so I just wanted to get a good prize and have a quick clear. We stuck to our plan and had a nice result.”

Founded by legendary horseman Ronnie Beard with Michael Dorman, Wyndmont Farm provides classical horsemanship to annual and seasonal equestrian clientele. They will continue to compete at the Tryon Summer Series in North Carolina during the summer months. To find out more about Wyndmont Inc., please visit http://wyndmont.com.

Wilton Porter Captures Top Place Finishes in $15,000 Under 25 Grand Prix at Tryon

Mill Spring, NC – June 28, 2015 – Wilton Porter of Bartonville, TX dominated the $15,000 Under 25 Grand Prix at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) today, piloting both of his mounts to finishes in the top three. Porter collected first place aboard Delinquent JX and third aboard Patriot, both owned by Sleepy P Ranch, LLC. Alise Oken of Charlotte, NC and Kaid Du Ry placed second between both of Porter’s rides. The $15,000 Under 25 Grand Prix marked the last day of competition at the first week of the Tryon Summer Series. Tryon Summer 2 will begin on Wednesday, July 1, with another week of FEI CSI 3* competition.

Porter and Delinquent JX, a 2007 Scottish Sport Horse gelding, bested the class of 21 entries, capping the four-horse jump-off with a time of 40.394 seconds. As the last pair to return in the jump-off, Porter felt the pressure of riding a fast clear round after Oken blazed around the track aboard Kaid Du Ry, stopping the timers in 42.75 seconds.

“I’m feeling really good about today. Both of my horses were very solid in their rounds and I felt like I needed this after last night. It was, in a way, redemption for me because I didn’t have the best rounds and wanted to prove to myself that I could get it done,” said Porter.

Both horses take a similar ride according to Porter, who said both Delinquent JX and Patriot are very straightforward and two of the best in his string of upper level mounts.

“The plan didn’t really change that much between the two of them on course and when I walked it, I thought it was a really fair test but there weren’t that many clear trips, which surprised me,” said Porter. “My strategy with Patriot in the jump-off, after seeing some of the rails come down, was to just go neat and clear and see if that would put the pressure on Alise, which she totally took in stride and answered, so I knew I needed to go for it on Delinquent.”

Deliquent JX and Porter are a relatively new pair, partnered before the most recent 2015 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, FL. The pair has been consistent at the 1.40m and 1.50m level, but today was a real step forward in the pair’s partnership for the future.

“This is our first major win together. He’s eight years old and we got him in late 2014 from England from Simon Buckley and he’s up and coming. We’ve tried to figure out where he would be most comfortable and he’s really stepping up,” said Porter. “We’re hoping that he’ll be a really solid Grand Prix horse or a great FEI speed horse.”

Alise Oken and Kaid Du Ry

As Porter continues to make his mark in the young rider standings, he will focus on improving and becoming more consistent with each ride. Showing a natural ability to perform and compete, the sky is the limit for one of the United States’ up-and-coming talents.

“One of the most important things for me this summer is developing my team and maintaining consistency throughout the season,” he commented. “I really want to work to move up in the new Under 25 ranking list that we have. I think I’m sixth right now, but I want to focus on that consistency and keep winning prize money to move up. That is definitely a huge goal right now.”

The Sleepy P Ranch team will be based at TIEC for a majority of the summer season, where they have been since the Spring Series, which concluded on June 7. Porter has thoroughly enjoyed his time at TIEC and believes that the venue will bring great things to the sport in the near future.

“We’ve gotten to spend a lot of time (here), and I really love it. The ring space is incredible and really allows us to work our horses properly. The stabling is just amazing, and anything you could ever need is here,” said Porter. “They’ve thought of everything, and it is really an amazing facility.”

David Blake and Binkie Win $127k Adequan Grand Prix CSI3* at “Saturday Night Lights”

Mill Spring, NC – June 27, 2015 – In another action-packed Saturday evening at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), David Blake (IRL) and Binkie, owned by Pine Hollow Farm, cruised to victory in the $127,000 Adequan® Grand Prix CSI 3*. The duo bested a class of 35 entries to take top honors. Lauren Tisbo (USA) aboard Entre Nous followed in second with Andrew Welles (USA) and Boo Van Het Kastanjehof rounding out the top three. Competition at Tryon Summer 1 continues Sunday with the $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix at 2pm in the George Morris Arena at the Tryon Stadium. The Tryon Summer Series will continue through Sunday, July 19.

Blake and Binkie won out in a three-horse jump-off as the last pair on course in the class, which Blake used to his advantage. Tisbo and Welles dropped a rail in both of their rounds, which left the door open for Blake to seal the win.

“I knew since there was only three of us in it and there were two good riders in front of me with Andrew and Lauren, that they would probably be quicker than me if they were clear,” he said. “When I saw Lauren’s late rail, I had to make a choice when I walked into the ring about whether I wanted to go quick and risk a rail or if I wanted to play it safe.”

The timely decision paid off for Blake, as he and the 2006 Dutch Warmblood gelding, rode a smooth and fault-free round to secure the win. The course, designed by Ken Krome (USA), saw rails drop throughout the night, which Blake commented is the sign of a true course.

“When I walked the course I thought it looked like there was space everywhere to get the job done. I knew the last line would take a decision as to what you wanted to do. There were plenty of choices there. The time was nice but Ken Krome did a great job because it was deceiving,” explained Blake. “When the first twenty horses went and there were only two clears, you knew it was going to be tough to get around clear. Fences came down everywhere and that’s the key to a good course. He did a great job with it tonight.”

The pressure was on in the jump-off round, as the riders contested a difficult track with an optimum time of 58 seconds. The long course, after a testing first round, was intimidating, but Blake felt confident as soon as he entered the ring.

“Going into fence 1 and 2 I felt like he was really operating tonight and he was really himself, so I said I’m going to play it cool and see if we can go clean. He did a great job and I’m really proud of the way he handled himself out there,” he remarked.

When asked about his mental preparation before entering the ring in such a competitive class, Blake commented that sticking to a plan is important when faults are coming throughout the course.

“When you see rails dropping, it makes me want to stick to my plan even more and prove that it can work and jump a clear round. I much prefer a class like this than a class with twenty in the jump-off. You really have to work for your clear round. It makes me want to get it done even more,” he continued.

The win marked another great effort by Blake and Binkie, who have placed at the top of the leaderboard in nearly every class they have contested at TIEC this season. The duo has a bright future ahead, as Binkie, at only nine years of age, continues to improve and impress.

“This feels great. Everyone worked hard to make this happen and all of that pays off on nights like this. I would like to thank my owners, the Dvorkins, for everything they do to make nights like this possible,” he noted. “The organizers and partners here have done an incredible job of putting on a world-class show at a beautiful facility. We have really enjoyed being here and are looking forward to spending the rest of our summer and fall season here at TIEC.”

Aoife O’Grady, groom for Blake at Pine Hollow Farm, was the first winner of the newly announced Grooms’ Initiative Award, which is presented to the groom of the winning combination in the largest Grand Prix class above $25,000 during each competition week and will receive $500 as a part of their award. Originally from County Galway in Ireland, O’Grady joined the Pine Hollow Farm team last year to start working with Blake in only her second year as a groom.

“It feels amazing to receive this award. I’m absolutely in shock and feel so honored. It is good to know that grooms will be getting recognized for all of their hard work,” said Grady. “Binkie has been in my care since he arrived in the U.S. and I just love him to bits. He’s an absolute character and he loves to mess around and give kisses. He’s the star of all of my SnapChat stories. I love working with him and he’s a really special horse to me.”

O’Grady is an essential part of the team in the barn, according to Blake, who was quick to say that none of this would have been possible without her hard work and dedication to Binkie and the entire program.

“Aoife absolutely made this possible tonight. She spends so much time with that horse. She loves him to pieces and he knows it and feels it. He tries hard not just for me but also for her and I really have to thank her for that,” said Blake.
