Maddrix Pilots Shutterbug to First Derby Win at the Charleston Summer Classic

Maddrix and Shutterbug.

The Hunters LOVE to showcation at the Charleston Summer Classic!

Thirty-four horse and rider teams took to the hunt over the course designed by Classic Company’s Joe Carnicum before a sold out VIP tent and it was Timothy Maddrix of Birmingham, Alabama who won the class with Alina Dumitrescu’s Shutterbug.

After earning the leading first round score of 94 with Missy Nolan’s Life Is Good as well as a first round score of 91 with Shutterbug, the competition looked to be geared for a Maddrix win. After returning with Shutterbug in the Handy round and earning a total of 94 points, with three handy rounds to go, there was still a chance that Life Is Good may take the win.

However, as the last to go in the handy round, Life Is Good had a refusal at fence three which resulted in a second round score of 44, which moved Shutterbug to the winning position with a combined score of 185 while Life Is Good dropped to tenth place overall with a combined score of 138.

“The trap jump just came up dead wrong and he looked to take the step out and I looked to put it in and he just stopped,” commented Maddrix.

“Shutterbug was awesome,” said Maddrix. “I haven’t had him long; I just got him in Conyers. He is a warmblood coming seven and has done a lot of jumper classes,” Maddrix said. “That was the first time in the Handy that he went like a hunter and his first Derby win! He was awesome; he turned well, was quiet and jumped amazing,” he said.

“Joe [Carnicum] did a great job with the course,” commented Maddrix. “It was really fun and gave you a lot of options with inside turns and allowed you to separate yourself from the crowd. The course was pretty perfect being very technical, yet providing options.”

A first round score of at least 78 was the magic number for those seeking a Handy opportunity. After turning in a first round effort with a total score of 78, Isabella Rand’s Silver Stone, ridden by Lauren Marcinkoski of Hardeeville, South Carolina, was the first to go in the Handy round and scored a 62. Their total score of 140 would see the pair finish in ninth place overall.

Charles Harfield’s Hidden Creek’s Tango, ridden by Christina Jason of Aiken, South Carolina, followed Silver Stone. Their first round score of 79 and second of 81 would see the pair finish in fifth place overall with a total score of 160.

The third horse to return was Sophia Stouse’s Elder, ridden by Livia Steffee of New Orleans, Louisiana. Their first round score of 79.75 combined with their second round score of 80 would see the pair finish in seventh place overall with a total of 159.50 points.

Unikat, owned by Amy Yoder of Seneca, South Carolina and ridden by Carlos Aramburo of Red Banks, Mississippi, placed eighth overall with combined scores of 79.75 and 78 points, respectively.

DS Holdings, LLC’s DSH Anka, ridden by Whitney Owens of Windcrest, Texas, followed in the Handy round and turned in a score of 79.75. Combined with their first round score of 80, the pair would finish in sixth place overall with a score of 159.75.

Petrossian, owned and ridden by Whitney Miller of San Antonio, Texas, had a first round score of 80.5. However, they were eliminated in their second round and subsequently placed twelfth overall.

Isabel Coleman of New Orleans, Louisiana and her own Antwerp placed third overall after earning a first round score of 81 and second round score of 84 for a total of 165 points. Coleman was also the recipient of the Kastel Denmark Hunter Style of Riding Award.

Lynn Seithel of Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina and her own Versace earned scores of 83 and 44, respectively, and their total of 127 would see the pair finish in eleventh place overall.

Julie Curtain of Woodstock, Georgia and Jennifer Munday’s Samaritan returned for their Handy round after earning a first round score of 89. Their second round score of 76 gave them a grand total of 165 points which earned them fourth place overall.

Frankie Owens of San Antonio, Texas piloted DS Holdings Carrida to a first round score of 84 and second round score of 81. Their overall total of 168 would see the pair finish in second place overall.

How did Maddrix feel about the award presentations with the firefighters from the Charleston Animal Society’s calendar? “I really think I should have flexed my muscles with them but I didn’t want to scare them off,” he laughed. “And for the record, they also wanted me to be in the calendar for next year but I declined,” he joked.

Tim Maddrix loves the Charleston Summer Classic! “I’ve been to Kiawah Island, went to the ocean, went to Seabrook the second day and now we’re horse showing. After tonight’s prix, we’ll probably hit the pool at the Seabrook Club and then after the show tomorrow, go back to the beach!” he said.

Official Restaurant Partner CRAVE, catered the VIP dinner sponsored by the Seabrook Island Equestrian Center and all dined on a fabulous dinner along with an open bar sponsored by Tito’s Vodka.

The VIP was HOT HOT HOT! The Charleston Summer Classic’s Official Charity, the Charleston Animal Society, was on hand promoting their 2016 calendars which feature the hottest fireman in South Carolina and rescued animals.

Everyone had an opportunity to pre-purchase a calendar and pose with the firefighters and, to say the least, a good time was had by all! For those that missed it this week, the Charleston Animal Society will be back next Friday from 6-7:30 pm during the $35,000 Devoucoux Grand Prix.

Maddrix Pilots KT Cher to the Win in the $10,000 Open Jumper Season Opener in Pensacola

Tim Maddrix pilots Claudia Styslinger’s KT Cher to the win in Saturday night’s $10,000 Open Jumper class.

The Pensacola community packed the stands Saturday night in the covered arena at the Escambia County Equestrian Center to watch some top show jumpers compete for the $10,000 Open Jumper purse.

Eighteen horse and rider combinations took to the course designed by Classic Company’s Official Course Designer, Allen Rheinheimer of Zionsville, Indiana.  “I designed this course to be welcoming for both horse and rider and I’m happy with the results,” Rheinheimer commented.

No one was happier than Timothy Maddrix of Birmingham, Alabama, who rode Claudia Styslinger’s KT Cher to the win, beating Eduardo Leon’s Bugati, ridden by Wilhelm Genn in a jump off round of 34.198 seconds.  Genn’s jump off time with Bugati was just a fraction of a second slower in 34.992 seconds which saw them finish with the red ribbon.  “To be honest, I thought Wilhelm had me,” commented Maddrix. “Wilhelm [Genn] was really fast and I just won by a fraction of a second.  The jump off round was really fun with some great turns and it was an overall fun time,” he added.

Of the eighteen rounds, only four returned for the jump-off round.  Big Promise, owned and ridden by Aleece Jarman of Pace, Florida, took third place in the class after double clean rounds and a jump off time of 37.445 seconds.  Fourth place was awarded to Akida, owned by Wilhelm Genn and Mark Atkins and ridden by Wilhelm Genn of Lebanon, Ohio. After a clean first round, the pair returned for the jump off but with nineteen faults and a time of 57.235 seconds, the duo would finish in fourth.

Jarman returned for the fifth place ribbon, this time aboard her own Cantori, with a first round time of 86.726 seconds and two time faults.  Sixth place was awarded to Theo Genn of Lebanon, Ohio, in the irons aboard Winchester, owned by Bridlebourne Stables, LLC, in a first round time of 86.915 seconds and two time faults.  Seventh place was awarded to Marylisa Leffler of Brookover, Maryland, riding Rolling Acres’ Carlot in a first round time of 87.477 and three time faults.

Week II on the Emerald Coast is shaping up to be a winner.  “We have a lot going on here this week,” said Bob Bell, President of the Classic and Gulf Coast Classic Company.  “We’re offering a $5,000 Open Welcome Class, $2,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby, a $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby and $25,000 Grand Prix.  We’re all having a great time here on the coast, so come on down!” he added.

Frances Land and Vieanne victorious in the $45,000 EMO Grand Prix

Frances Land of Alpharetta, Georgia and her own Vieanne bested 22 horse and rider combinations when they turned in a double clean round Saturday night to claim the victory in the $45,000 EMO Grand Prix.

Only five went clean in the class and qualified for the jump off.  Bryn Sadler of Santa Fe, New Mexico riding Bon Giorno, owned by Showcase 81, LLC, was the first to go clean in the class, beating the set time of 92 seconds with her own 87.398 seconds.  As the first to go in the jump-off, the pair had a rail at the second fence and with four faults and a time of 46.601 seconds, finished in fourth overall.

Sarah Segal of Flemington, New Jersey in the irons aboard Ubris, owned by Chartwell, had a clean, first round effort in a time of 88.513 seconds and was the next to join the jump off.  After posting another clean round in a time of 42.655 seconds, the pair set the time to beat.  But the lead was short-lived after Paulo Santana of Wellington, Florida and Santana Stables, LLC’s Atanja edged Segal out with a clean round in a time of 41.477 seconds.  Segal and Ubris would finish in third, while Santana and Atanja would finish in second place.

Timothy Maddrix of Birmingham, Alabama riding KT Cher, owned by Claudia Styslinger, was the next to go after posting a clean first round effort in 86.419 seconds.  But after a rail down at the second to last fence and a time of 46.642 seconds, Maddrix and KT Cher would settle for fifth overall.

Land and Vieanne were in the enviable last to go position and their clean second round in a time of 41.370 seconds would beat Santana’s time by a little more than a second, rocketing Land and her Vieanne to the winner’s circle.

Internationally known Olympic course designer Steve Stephens of Palmetto, Florida designed the Open Jumper Welcome Class as well as the $45,000 EMO Grand Prix.

Life is Good for the winner of the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby

Timothy Maddrix of Birmingham, Alabama and Life is Good, owned by Mary Elise Nolan, won the blue ribbon in the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, trumping eleven other horse and rider teams. The pair had a first round score of 173 and a second round score of 189 totaling 360 which put the blue ribbon in his hands and the champion sash on Life is Good.  “The course was set up nice and it’s always so beautiful in that arena,” said Maddrix.  “The two stride to a bending line right at the in-gate was challenging. I even had a rail down with Eloise [his second mount] in our second round,” he said, “but Life is Good is very careful.”

“His barn name is Erwin, but I call him Erwinner,” he laughed. “We bought him in Gulfport last winter and so we’ve had him about nine months.  He jumps amazing and is the most fun horse in the barn,” he said.  The pair will showing at the Gulf Coast Winter Classic this winter.

Ian Silitch of Ocala, Florida rode his own Marlon to a second place finish with a first round score of 162 and a second round score of 178 totaling 340 total points.  Laurel Blakemore’s Lion, also ridden by Siltch, won third place honors with a score of 128 and 176, respectively, totaling 304 points for the third place position.
