Chris Ewanouski and Carlos 455 Untouchable at Wellington Turf Tour 1.40m Grand Prix

Chris Ewanouski and Carlos 455.

Wellington, FL – February 21, 2014 – Out of 50 contenders, Chris Ewanouski rode Carlos 455 to Wellington Turf Tour 1.40m Grand Prix victory at Deeridge Farms today. It came down to a difference of 2/10ths of a second, but Ewanouski set the standard high with his time of 33.367 seconds in an 18-horse jump off. Brazil’s Rodrigo Pessoa snatched second place aboard HH Let’s Fly, while Jeffery Welles rode to the third place with Antaris S.

Jeffery Welles and Bilion set the pace early this morning as only the second to take on Eric Hasbrouck’s course. They rode to a clear first round, and moved into the jump off where they tripped the timers at a speedy pace of 34.662 seconds. With another mount left in the class, and seeing a chance for possible defeat, Welles tried to catch his own time aboard Antaris S.

With blazing speed, he piloted the bay gelding through the turns with efficiency. They sliced the seconds with their strategy, stopping the clock at 33.783 seconds. His speedy times pushed him into the lead for the Leading Rider Bonus, fueling a fire as Sarah Segal later returned with Tilghman to reclaim her title.

Segal piloted Tilghman to a double clear effort in 33.840 seconds to surpass Welles’ round with Bilion, but she could not quite catch the time he set with Antaris S at 33.783 seconds.

Although a field of 40 competitors remained, each one tried, but could not catch Welles’ time, until Chris Ewanouski took the reins aboard Carlos 455. He was tenth in the jump off, but he knew that he has a tremendous feat ahead of him. Not only did he need to catch Welles’ time, but he needed to be just a tick faster to avoid the remaining riders from superseding his rank.

Brazil’s Rodrigo Pessoa, coming off of yesterday’s win at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival’s $125,000 Ruby et Violette WEF Challenge Cup, traversed the track with confidence and speed aboard the 15-year-old HH Let’s Fly. He rode double clear in 33.561 seconds, nearly catching Ewanouski’s time, but falling 2/10ths of a seconds shy.

“He is a really experienced horse, so I tried to do my best to catch the time, but it was not enough today. I gave more or less everything, but it was not enough,” Pessoa said. “It was very refreshing to come out here and get some fresh air and space; I enjoyed the whole day.”

Ewanouski’s time did not hold the week before when competing at the International Polo Club Palm Beach, but this week he was ready to ride for the victory.

“Honestly, I knew that Jeffery was blazing fast, and after hearing about his round, I knew I had to go fast,” Ewanouski explained. “First I wanted to jump clean, and then once I did, I decided to go fast and catch him. I knew being cautious wasn’t going to cut it.”

Ewanouski continued, “Carlos 455 is a really cool horse that I have been able to ride for the past year. He started out jumping 1.30m-1.35m, but this summer we started jumping small grand prix. He is really scopey, and for me he is a little big. It is ironic – he is a bit of a slower going horse, but he can still go very fast. I knew I needed to kick it up a notch, so I made a slice to fence 14 that maybe I shouldn’t have, but it worked. I also took a shot by going inside to fence 12, which many people hadn’t done.”

Pessoa eventually earned the second place with Welles capturing third. Segal and Tilghman finished fourth, while Jeffery Welles and Bilion took fifth. Daniel Deusser and First Class Vaneeckelghem rounded out the top six.

Ewanouski concluded, “I did a couple of the Wellington Turf Tour Grand Prix, but Deeridge was beautiful. I think they are a great idea. So far, the places I have been to show the footing has been great, and they are run really well. It is a huge convenience to be able to come at any time.”

Joe Fargis and Lariat Ride to Wellington Turf Tour 1.30m-1.35m Victory

Joe Fargis and Lariat.

Wellington, FL – February 19, 2014 – The competition was fierce today at Deeridge Farm as the Wellington Turf Tour got underway with a field of more than 50 competitors. Joe Fargis and Lariat took the win for the first class of the day, tripping the timers in 28.269 seconds. Linda Sheridan rode Invitational to the victory in the second 1.30m-1.35m Jumper class in a time of 32.144 seconds. Today also marked the third of a five-week YJC Jumper Championship series where Sarah Scheiring and Cairobi rode to the first place in the 7/8 Year Old YJC Qualifying Class and Ramiro Quintana and Diardo rode to the top finish for the 5/6 Year Old YJC Qualifying Class.

It came down to three riders today in the $2,000 1.30m-1.35 Jumper Red Class with only tenths of a second separating each competitor. Although six horse and rider combinations posted double clear efforts, Ramiro Quintana and Largo were the first to set the pace at 28.589 seconds. Jeffery Welles soon followed behind with Bilion, owned by Triton Ventures Farms, Inc., leaving out strides and shaving just enough to push ahead of Quintana for the lead. He posted a time of 28.557 seconds.

The final rider of the day, Olympian Joe Fargis had his eyes set on the win. He entered the field with 13-year-old Lariat. Together they have ridden to the top of the leader board at numerous events, and has proven a consistent winner in the show ring. After a year off due to an injury, the Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour was the perfect place to bring the talented mount.

They rode the first course with finesse, and moved into the jump off where Fargis knew he was up against an exemplary time. He made a turn from fences two and three of the jump off to stay a tick ahead of the pace, riding to the winning time of 28.269 seconds.

“He needs a confident ride – strong,” Fargis described. “There is no plan because you don’t see anyone else. You go as quickly as you can, and still stay safe. I surprised myself.”

Fargis continued, “It is heaven. It is just wonderful to show here. The footing is good, the people are fun, and it’s nice. I think it is what horse showing is about. I think it is real old time. I plan to be back on Friday.”

Although Molly Ashe Cawley held the lead aboard Coq a Doodle until the end of the day, it was Linda Sheridan’s efficient strategy that pushed them into the lead for the green course. Sheridan and Invitational rode to the top of the standings, posting a speedy jump off in 32.144 seconds.

Sheridan has owned the 18-year-old Invitational for 10 years, and knew how to ride him to the time needed.

Sheridan explained, “I really wanted to have a smooth first round. In the jump off he is always fast. I knew I wanted to take a nice turn to the last combination off of the right lead. I didn’t want to take a shot there. I don’t have to think about much.”

“He has been part of the family, and he has really become a family member. He is a little tricky, but he is a good jumper,” Sheridan described. “When he is on he is on. The biggest thing is making sure that he is in front of my leg. He has a fabulous gallop, and is really careful. I don’t think he wants to do miraculous things anymore. We had a lot of fun out there.”

Darrin Dlin and Tennyson, owned by Susan Grange, rode to the second place by a narrow margin of 32.292 seconds, with Ashe finishing in third for her early pace setting time of 33.010 seconds. Grange brought numerous entries today for the 1.30m-1.35m Jumpers, as well as the YJC Qualifying series.

“We had a great day today, and this gives the young horses an opportunity to get out on the grass while picking up a nice gallop and an open course. We are debating coming to these shows every week because they are so good for the horses,” Grange said. “We want to take our horses where they have the best opportunity. I thought Eric Hasbrouck did a great design job today for the courses.”

In the 7/8 Year Old YJC Qualifying Class Sarah Scheriring and Cairobi took the top honors. Their time of 32.840 seconds put them nearly two seconds ahead of the competitors. Quintana rode HH Cantino to the second place in a tidy 34.500 seconds, while also snatching third place with Bialda.

“I love showing here,” Quintana said. “I brought my young jumpers to give them a different experience, different venue with good footing and different jumps. It really helps to break the routine of being at the Winter Equestrian Festival week in and week out. It is a nice option to have, especially since the classes are for qualifying points.”

Quintana concluded, “I think that this series is gaining popularity. This week I see that there are more riders coming to show here, and I think that it is something I would definitely recommend to sponsors. You have people here to fill up this show in Wellington, and it reaches many different levels. This is a great option to have where exhibitors can show at both places. The open in gate is a great set up, and I have really enjoyed having the opportunity to show here.”

This Friday, Deeridge will welcome exhibitors to the sixth of the 11-week Wellington Turf Tour filled with top-tier competitors, horses and nearly $200,000 in prize money. This is a rare opportunity for jumper riders to compete on the beautiful turf with an Eric Hasbrouck designed course. The Friday Invitational Grand Prix also offers riders the opportunity to show on the same turf where the $24,750 Wellington Turf Tour Finale will take place on Saturday, March 22, 2014. Competitors will continue to ride for the important Leading Rider Bonus Points.

This Saturday will mark the first of two Classic Days to take place at the Ridge at Wellington. The Child/Adult Jumper division will run in the sand ring from 8 a.m. until noon, with a Masters Jumping Section. The Masters Jumper division, open to riders age 50 and over, will take place from noon until 4 p.m. and will include a Child/Adult Jumper Section. Classes will run as an open gate beginning and concluding at the times scheduled. The gate will be open; however, times may be obtained by request. To request and confirm a specific start time for a horse/rider combination the show office many be contacted directly at (561) 791-1471.

Meadowbrook Horse Transport will provide transportation to and from the horse show and other locations throughout Wellington for the Friday and Saturday events. Jeffery Welles and Antaris S.

Wellington, FL – February 14, 2014 – The International Polo Club Palm Beach was alive with exhilarating jumper action today as riders gathered to compete on the turf for the sixth week of the Wellington Turf Tour Grand Prix Series. Jeffery Welles and Antaris S were today’s pathfinders, riding to a double clear effort in an amazing 35. 590 seconds.

Beth Underhill was the first to attempt the course this morning. Eric Hasbrouck was the sixth week’s course designer. He utilized a liver pool, in-and-out, standalone oxers, a triple combination set on the outside, and a triple bar. Faults fell throughout the course, but Underhill was the first to navigate the track, as well as the first to post a double-clear effort. Her time of 40.520 seconds aboard Viggio would prove good enough for the fifth place finish, with a field of 34 competitors fighting in a battle of the best.

Jeffery Welles was only the second rider of the class, but his 9-year-old mount Antaris S was on fire as they traversed the turf. They cleared the first round with ease, and had their sights on the prize as they picked up a blazing speed for the jump off. Welles left a stride out of the first line, doing seven strides from the oxer to the vertical. To shave the time he made quick and tidy turns, with Antaris S siding in on the triple bar, slicing the seconds. They tripped the timers in an astounding 35.590 seconds.

“I am riding Antaris S for a good friend of mine, Natalie Gizzi,” Welles explained. “I showed him a little bit last summer in two shows, and then down here I have been riding him since the beginning of the circuit. He has been coming to George and Nona’s shows for the last three weeks, and has also shown at the Winter Equestrian Festival.”

This was not the pair’s first time winning the blue ribbon for The Ridge at Wellington’s Turf Tour, having captured the victory in the 1.30m-1.35m Jumpers at Wolfstone Stables during Week V. “The horse was great today. This has been really nice jumping on the grass at these venues. Everything that George [D’Ambrosio] and Nona [Garson] are doing with the help of these facilities is really nice, and allows us to jump on the grass.”

Ramiro Quintana and Caramello Z
Ramiro Quintana and Caramello Z

Each consecutive rider attempted to catch Welles’ time, but none would avail today. Samuel Parot and Thea were the first to get within a second, but a rail at the final oxer would cost them. It was Ramiro Quintana, winner of Wednesday’s 1.30m-1.35m Jumper class, aboard Caramello Z who would take the second place. Their double clear effort was completed in 37.251 seconds. Debbie Stephens and Dryden captured the third place finish with a time of 39.684 seconds, leaving all rails intact.

Welles concluded, “I think that different venues each week is great for them. It breaks up the monotony and boredom of showing in the same facility every week. The show is great, but this is something different. This gives you an opportunity to jump 1.30m-1.40m on grass at different facilities, and it has been great for all of the young horses I have been riding.”

Chris Ewanouski and Carlos 455 were awarded the fourth place for their clean round completed in 39.987 seconds, while Underhill claimed fifth. Sarah Wayda and Spargel were the last of the double-clear efforts, completing the course in a conservative 42.517 seconds.

Riders should get their entries in to avoid post-entry fees. The stakes are increasing each week as top riders, amateur and professional, vie for their invitation into the $24,750 Invitational Grand Prix Series Finale Saturday, March 22, 2014, and the newly announced Leading Rider Bonus.

Ramiro Quintana and Largo Untouchable, Riding to Top of the Wellington Turf Tour Leader Board

Ramiro Quintana and Largo.

Wellington, FL – February 12, 2014 – The Ridge at Wellington’s Turf Tour returned to the International Polo Club Palm Beach today for its sixth week of competition. The 1.30m-1.35m Jumpers kicked off the halfway point of the series, where Ramiro Quintana piloted Largo to the pinnacle of the rankings in the red class, dominating the standings as all other contenders attempted to match their speed. It was Philip Richter and his veteran mount Ray Ray that took the top earnings in the green class.

The morning welcomed competitors to the open grass field at the International Polo Club (IPC) in Wellington, Florida. Quintana set the pace as the eleventh rider to traverse the track. He utilized the open field to keep a consistent rhythm and open his mount’s stride, shaving the seconds and breaking the beam in only 34.612 seconds. The victory was his for the taking as each consecutive rider attempted to best their speed and accuracy without avail.

“I had a nice rhythm from the start that I was able to carry throughout the entire course,” Quintana explained. “I was able to really open up my horse’s stride and use the size of the field. He turns really well, and we were able to make up a lot of time. I was very happy to win today’s class, and I will definitely be back.”

Quintana plans on returning to the Wellington Turf Tour once a week with a young horse. “It was my first time competing at one of these shows, but I was very surprised by how pleasant the show was. The footing was excellent, the course was very nice and the jumps were great. It provides a very nice option for younger horses, and provides good mileage.”

Peter Lutz finished in the second place position with Don’t Stop O in a speedy 35.471 seconds, while Jeffery Welles and Antaris S earned the third place award. Hillary Simpson and Arkansas rode to the fourth place position, and Mario Deslauriers piloted Hamlet to the fifth place. Leslie Howard and Zaragoza rounded out the top six with their quick and tidy jump off.

Earlier in the morning, Molly Ashe was the first of the field to clear the Eric Hasbrouck designed course. She rode to a double clear effort in the green class, setting the pace with a time of 37.719 seconds aboard Emerald B, owned by Monica Carrera, forcing competitors to chase her time while trying to duplicate her clean effort.

Andrew Bourns and Venice
Andrew Bourns and Venice

Andrew Bourns and Venice, owned by Jaybird Farms, had their sights set on the prize today. Although it was their first trip to the Wellington Turf Tour for the 2014 circuit, they wanted to leave their mark. They easily navigated the opening course and moved into the jump off where they raced the clock, breaking the beam in 35.599 seconds.

“It is a nice basic course – I say basic but he [Hasbrouck] asks a few questions with unrelated distances to doubles, and a hard distance down the outside, which was quite difficult. It is the kind of course that could fool you into a false sense of security, but it took a little more riding than it looks,” Bourns said. “It was a little more challenging than what I thought it would be, which was good. For my horse it was ideal because it was her first day to be able to jump in a field like this. It was just a beautiful introduction. I am going to be all over the grand prix on Friday.”

Bourns continued, “I have to say that I am really impressed. The footing seems to be phenomenal. The setting is really nice, the course is nice, the building is good and you have ample room to warm up. Sometimes when you come to these big open spaces the horses can get a little unsettled if they are not used to it. It is great experience, and a beautiful setting. You just won’t find anything better. Being able to take clients and owners to a place like this is really invaluable.”

It seemed as though Bourns had victory in his grasp, until the final rider of the day, frequent weekend warrior Phillip Richter navigated the 18-year-old Ray Ray to the winning time of 34.506 seconds.

“It was a wonderful course; Eric did a great course, I think. Riding on this field is heaven,” Richter said. “I have older horses, so they love being on the grass, and the footing is super. It is really nice of IPC to let The Ridge do these classes here. It is great to have variety and get away from the show for a bit.”

Phillip Richter and Ray Ray
Phillip Richter and Ray Ray

Richter shows Ray Ray very sparingly in Wellington, using a minimalist approach to train and prepare. The turf proved ideal for the young horses, but even more so for Richter’s veteran mount. The pair prepares on turf more so than sand, to avoid the consequences that could affect his horse’s tendons.

“The bigger the jumps the better,” Richter explained. “He is a wonderful horse, and our team is really a group effort. My wife hacks him during the week, and my trainer Norman is fantastic. He needs a lot of care, which goes with his age. He is a wonderful horse to ride. He has nothing to prove; my dream as an amateur was to win the Sunday Classic at the Hamptons, and it eluded me for 25 years. Ray Ray won it two years ago. I checked it off of my bucket list. Winning today was wonderful, and we will return on Friday.”

Bourns finished in the second place position with Venice, while Roberto Teran and ADC Chef Z took home third. Ashe nabbed the fourth place finish for her early lead aboard Emerald B, and Henrik Gundersen with Adlanteur was awarded the fifth. Emily Hill and Rio finished with the sixth place ranking.

Sarah Segal and Tilghman Ride to Victory at the Ridge at Wellington’s 1.40 Grand Prix

Wellington, FL – February 8, 2014 – McLain Ward and Dulien Van De Smeets returned to the Ridge at Wellington’s 1.40m Invitational Grand Prix to defend their turf, but they were met with a challenger as the fifth week of the series got underway. Sarah Segal and Tilghman rose to the test today, riding the jump off round with blazing speed. They rode to a double clear effort in 32.574 seconds, proving untouchable and taking the victory.

Roosje Brouwer took an early lead with Cisco’s Zidane as the sun rose over Wolfstone Stables. She guided the gelding around the Pierre Jolicouer designed course for a clear first round, then riding to the first of only four double clear rounds. Christine McCrea and Win For Life posted a conservative time of 38.703 seconds, but had one rail down. Karyn Foley and Falco also posted a four-fault round, but their time of 43.457 seconds proved too careful for a top three finish. It seemed as though Brouwer’s time would hold as the day continued; however, McLain Ward would soon challenge her time of 36.150 seconds.

Ward navigated the first round track with straightforwardness, riding new mount Dulien Van De Smeets to the top of the leader board with a jump off time of 34.031 seconds. Ward used a forward pace to move the mare through the turns, he negated an inside turn that left hope for competitors. His time was fast, but not entirely untouchable.

“It was a good course. I thought it was actually a little bit bigger than last week, but it was in a little easier ring, going in the sand. She went great out there and did great today,” Ward said. “We are going to keep moving her along, and hopefully jump her in some grand prix soon enough.”

McLain Ward and Dulien Van De Smeets
McLain Ward and Dulien Van De Smeets

Ward continued, “It is nice to be able to compete for good prize money, not going up against 200 horses running around like maniacs. If you are trying to develop a horse in the 1.40m division, it is very hard at the Winter Equestrian Festival; you almost need a ringer in those classes now.”

Emmanuel Camilli took his turn at the track with Zacca Zoeloe, chasing Ward’s time. He was able to guide the bay gelding to a time of 33.617 seconds, but a rail fell at fence 7 to make him the fastest of the four-faulters. It wasn’t until Sarah Segal took the reins aboard Tilghman that defeat seemed plausible.

Segal posted a speedy first round course, and continued into the jump off. Using Tilghman quick foot speed, she covered the ground with seconds to spare, breaking the beam in 32.574 seconds. She was a full two seconds quicker than Ward’s leading time.

“I got him as a 6-year-old, and he is 10 now, so I have had him for a while. He won a bunch of these grand prix last year, and we came so close to winning the finale, but he had a rail down at the last fence of the jump off,” Segal explained. “He is a fantastic 1.40m horse. This is a niche for him. He can jump it really easily, and is really quick on his feet. Even if you go slow, he goes fast.”

Segal continued, “It is a little hard to get the context for if McLain would be able to hold the lead, but I tried to follow his track. My horse is just a little quicker. We made the inside turns, and although I added a stride to the last fence, my horse is so quick that I knew we had it. This is his game; he’s a great jumper and very quick in the air.”

Ben Meredith took the fourth place finish with Bernadien Van Westuur, jumping clear, but not quite fast enough with a time of 36.444 seconds. Ward finished in the second place position, while Brouwer completed the day with the third place award.

The stakes are increasing each week as top riders, amateur and professional, vie for their invitation to the $24,750 1.40m Invitational Grand Prix Series Finale on Saturday, March 22, 2014, as well as the coveted Leading Rider Bonus. The Wellington Turf Tour will return to the International Polo Club Palm Beach next week for its Wednesday and Friday events.

Meadowbrook Horse Transport will provide transportation to and from the horse show and other locations throughout Wellington for both the Wednesday and Friday events. The transportation is a nominal fee of $50 per horse, and will be calculated into the final show fees. This approaching week The Wellington Turf Tour will return to the International Polo Club Palm Beach. The Wednesday will return to the field with the 1.30m-1.35m Jumper divisions. The Grand Prix is set to happen this Friday, February 14, 2014. Riders are encouraged to get their entries in as soon as possible for the approaching classes. Turning in entries early will ensure that they get the time that they desire. Show Net will provide the live scoring for the Ridge Winter Tour II, as well as video all rounds. Jennifer Alfano Wins Inaugural $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby at the Ridge at Wellington

Jennifer Alfano and Jersey Boy.

Wellington, FL – February 7, 2014 – The top riders from across the nation gather at the Ridge at Wellington today for the inaugural Hunter Derby Days, part of the Ridge at Wellington’s Turf Tour. Under sunny skies and beautiful conditions the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby commenced this afternoon, featuring derby sensation Jersey Boy with Jennifer Alfano in the saddle riding to the top of the ranks. Besting a field of top-tier competitors, Alfano and Jersey Boy led the field from start to finish. Havens Schatt and Just Fred took the second place, while Kelley Farmer and Unspoken captured third. Earlier in the day Keri Kampsen and Silhouette took home the victory in $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby.

Kenneth Krome of the United States captured the essence of a traditional hunt field as he transformed the sand arena at the Ridge at Wellington into a beautifully set course. He utilized natural objects such as logs, brush and birch to set the scene, while challenging riders with a serpentine of obstacles. Riders had to use the entire expanse of the large arena. Riders had the option to earn valuable handy points and high option points throughout the course, adding crucial tallies to their already impressive score.

Twelve horse and rider combinations would find their way into the challenging handy course, but it was Alfano and Jersey Boy, owned by SBS Farms, Inc. of Buffalo, NY, who were the class pathfinders with their score combined score of 179 points from the first round.

“He jumped great in the first round, and he hadn’t been in the ring or anything, so it was all pretty new to him. He was in it to win it today,” Alfano explained.

Havens Schatt came back in the third position, but her seemingly flawless handy round earned them the top marks with scores of dual scores of 87 awarded from both judges. Their points for handiness and utilization of the high options led to a total of 191 points. Kelley Farmer and Unspoken also rode to a beautiful handy round with a beautiful transition to the trot fence, and smooth inside turns for a second-round score of 185.5 points.

Alfano and Jersey Boy returned to the ring with a first round total of 179 points, and Jersey Boy once again rose to the handy challenge. They navigated the inside turns with ease while keeping a forward pace. They earned a score of 191.25 points, to keep the lead and claim the winning honors with an overall score of 370.25.

“It’s great; he is a little older now, so he has gotten easier and easier,” Alfano said. “It is nice because he hasn’t shown since Harrisburg, and he went to Jacksonville and went right in the derby, and then came here and went right in the derby. These are the only two classes he has done this year, and he has won both. I am thrilled with him; he feels better than ever.”

Keri Kampsen and Silhouette

Earlier today, the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby welcomed 23 riders to the ring. In the end it was Keri Kampsen and Lyn Pedersen’s Silhouette that wowed the judges with their consistency and to take home the winning prize, earning the overall score of 350.5 points. Hannah Isop and Red Ryder, owned by Tracy Freels, rode to the second place finish with a score of 346 points, while Jennifer Bauersachs ranked third.

“I just started riding Silhouette the second week of WEF; John French normally rides her, but since he is at Thermal, I get to show her,” Kampsen said. “She is a blast to ride. She just likes confidence, and consistency. She is a really great mare. She tries 110% all the time.”

Kampsen concluded, “The courses were very nice. It was a friendly way to do her first derby in Wellington. It was enough course, and it had enough jump. There were some great options in the handy course, and although I couldn’t pull off the inside turn that Jennifer [Bauersachs] did for the inside turn to the double, I think it was our consistency that put us ahead. It was a conservative round, but she really did well. We are already planning to return for the March derby.”

The Ridge at Wellington Hunter Derby Days will return March 21, 2014 with the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby, as well as the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby. Jeffery Welles Takes 1.30m-1.35m Jumper Top Finishes at the Ridge at Wellington’s Wednesday Turf Tour

Jeffery Welles and Gummi Van Oz.

Wellington, FL – February 5, 2014 – Jeffery Welles rode to the top of the leader board during today’s Wellington Turf Tour 1.30m-1.35m Jumpers at Wolfstone Stables. Not only did he take the early lead in the first class aboard Gummi Van Oz, but he also rode to the top rank during the second class with Antaris S. Today also marked the second week of the five-week Young Jumper Championship Series, where Kevin Babington piloted KEC Pineapple Swirl to the first place finish in the 6 and 7/8 Year Old Jumper division.

Week V saw over 25 entries, but Jeffery Welles set the pace from the beginning, becoming the day’s trailblazer as he consistently rode his mounts to the pinnacle of the standings. As only the second to take on the Pierre Jolicouer designed course, Welles laid down the first of only four clear rounds, moving into the jump off with Gummi Van Oz. They tackled the shortened track in a speedy 39.044 seconds. Wendy Ritter Peralta and Cruz Z took the second place, while Josh Dolan and Dynamo rode to the third place finish. Stal Thyssen and Cisco’s Zidane were the last of the four to post a double-clear effort.

On a hot streak, Welles continued into the second class of the day with Antaris S. Although Emanuel Camilli and Zacca Zoeloe posted a speedy round in 29.931 seconds, Welles proved that he could shave the seconds with ease. He sliced the turns and took an inside turn to the final obstacle, allowing him to trip the timers in 28.919 seconds to take over the lead. Although others tried, no one could match his pace. Sandra Dalman and Brightside took over the third place position with a conservative, but clean effort in 32.848 seconds.

In the Young Jumper Championship divisions it came down to a three-horse jump off during the 6 and 7/8 Year Olds. Josh Dolan and Cora were the first to complete the opening round free of fault, then posting a speedy and clean jump off round in 37.300 seconds. Peter Lutz and Coberlina challenged the duo, moving into the jump off with their sights set on the top finish. They completed the course in 36.790 seconds, but Kevin Babington and KEC Pineapple Swirl were not about to go down without a fight.

With a blazing speed, Babington pushed the young horse forward, and turned her quickly through the serpentine of fences. He was able to cut the time, setting an untouchable pace of 32.420 seconds to take the win.

“I think for a 7- or 8-year-old, it is very good. The jumps were very basic, and the course was straightforward. My horse needed that for her first show back. It is very convenient for us because we can just hack down here and jump around, instead of going through the rigmarole of going to the main show,” Babington said.

He continued, “As a qualifier, I think it is fantastic. You can come out for the one day, on the day, without having to jump anything else all week-I really like that.”

Babington showed Pineapple Swirl in the 6-Year-Old YJC division last year, qualifying for the Hamptons, and on the final day they proudly took fourth. After taking several months to recuperate, Babington admitted that he was pleased with her performance today at the Wellington Turf Tour.

“This was her first qualifier back,” Babington described. “She was fresh, which was good, and she turns really quickly. The footing is great, and the facility is wonderful. I will return on Friday to jump on the grass in the Grand Prix.”

Attendees of Week V of the 11-week series can look forward to a show filled with top-tier competitors and horses, and nearly $200,000 in prize money.

The Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour was designed to develop young riders and young horses and provide a change of venue for all riders. The 2013 event was hailed as a highlight of the season with top riders, amateurs and juniors alike choosing to ride in the invitational series, challenging their young horses to a new experience during the Winter Equestrian Festival. The 2014 series returned to the Wellington show scene bigger and better than ever.

The event is approaching quickly, so riders should get their entries in to avoid post-entry fees. The stakes are increasing each week as top riders, amateur and professional, vie for their invitation into the $24,750 Invitational Grand Prix Series Finale Saturday, March 22, 2014, as well as the Leading Rider Bonus.

Meadowbrook Horse Transport will provide transportation to and from the horse show and other locations throughout Wellington for both the Wednesday and Friday events. The transportation is a nominal fee of $50 per horse, and will be calculated into the final show fees. McLain Ward Dashes for the Cash with Dulien Van De Smeets at the International Polo Club Palm Beach

Wellington, FL – February 1, 2014 – Speed was the name of the game today at the International Polo Club Palm Beach as McLain Ward set the time to beat during the Wellington Turf Tour’s 1.40m Grand Prix. Riding Dulien Van De Smeets, owned by Blue Chip Bloodstock, he guided the mare to a double clear effort in 38.802 seconds, leaving 42 contenders to chase his time.

Sarah Segal took an early lead with Zelda as the fog lifted from the field. She guided the mare around the Pierre Jolicouer designed course for a clear first round, then riding to the first of 12 double clear rounds. However, her time of 40.680 seconds would not hold.

“We have brought horses to the Ridge at Wellington nearly every week since they began the series,” Segal said. “It is such a wonderful series, and the field today was definitely bigger. It was a well-designed course that used a lot of single fences, and not so many related distances. It felt much more challenging, and it is much more complicated than the other courses, which is right because we are getting later in the series. It is really a Grand Prix-style course.”

Ward traversed the first round track with ease, riding new mount Dulien Van De Smeets to the top of the leaderboard. The mare is a new mount for Ward, who only began riding her in December. Although she does not have as much experience as some of the other horses on the field, the Ridge at Wellington’s Turf Tour was designed for horses to develop and grow. Ward began the jump-off going easy through the first three obstacles, but he opened her stride through the second half, shaving the seconds while still maintaining accuracy. They tripped the timers in 38.802 seconds.

Ward stated, “The mare is very careful, she doesn’t have a lot of experience going very fast, so she is still learning to look for her jumps. I thought that 1-2-4 was a little bit of a challenge, but at the end of the jump-off, the wide-open gallop really suited her; she could gallop and stay very careful. At the beginning she wasn’t sure, but in the end it was in her box.”

Ward continued, “It is a huge field, and for some of the horses it is a little eye opening because they have been in sandbox rings for several weeks, or at indoor shows. It is a little bit like you are out in space. I think it is very relaxing for the horses. The footing is obviously incredible, and it is a very nice change of venue. There are a lot of very good things about WEF, but there is too much WEF. There are too many shows over the same fences and the same rings. I think there are a lot of good parts to it, but it is just over used. This is great for the horse’s interest level, and for the riders to even have a change of venue, it is a breath of fresh air.”

Young rider Brittni Raflowtiz took her turn at the track with Elios, owned by ESI Show Jumpers, chasing Ward’s time. She was able to guide the bay gelding to a time of 40.366 seconds to slide into the second place. Although her time proved fast, with 21 riders remaining, it would only hold solid enough for the eventual fourth place, just ahead of Segal.

Hector Florentino and Anemone's Vicky
Hector Florentino and Anemone’s Vicky

Hector Florentino and Anemone’s Vicky, owned by Stransky’s Mission Farms, gave Ward a run for his money as he blazed around the shortened course. Although he sliced the turns and covered the ground with quick foot speed, their time of 39.156 seconds still fell shy of the top rank. They were awarded the second place for their efforts, while Wednesday’s 1.35m Jumper winner, Ali Wolff and Brianda, rode to the third place finish in 40.135 seconds.

This approaching week The Wellington Turf Tour will return to Schuyler Riley’s Wolfstone Stables in Southfields. The Wednesday classes will include the Young Jumpers Championship Qualifiers and the two 1.30m-1.35m Jumper divisions. The Grand Prix is set to happen this Saturday, February 8, 2014. The USHJA International and National Hunter Derbies will take place Friday, February 7 at the Ridge at Wellington. The Wednesday and Friday events will run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Riders are encouraged to get their entries in as soon as possible for the approaching classes. Darragh Kerins and Ali Wolff Capture the Wellington Turf Tour 1.30m-1.35m Victories

Darragh Kerins and Decia Van Het Molenhof. Photos by: Kendall Bierer/Phelps Media Group.

Wellington, FL – January 29, 2013 – Although the clouds hung dauntingly overhead, a field of 38 competitors warmed up for the fourth week of the Ridge at Wellington’s Turf Tour. Held at the International Polo Club Palm Beach, the 1.30m-1.35m Jumpers saw top international riders contend for the top spot in today’s two classes. Ireland’s Darragh Kerins rode to the pinnacle of the ranks during the first class, while Ali Wolff took the victory in the second class of the day.

Jeffery Welles claimed the early lead as the first rider of the day. He navigated Pierre Jolicouer’s course with finesse aboard Bilion, riding to a double clear effort in 40.870 seconds. Ireland’s Kevin Babington and Baloucat soon bested the pair with a faultless jump off in 39.051 seconds. The speed only continued as each consecutive rider outdid the next.

Kerins entered the ring and set a time that none could catch.

Decia Van Het Molenhof is a new mare for Kerins, but that did not put a hinge in his plans. He took the inside turn between fences 1 and 2 to shave the seconds, and then used her quick pace across the ground slide into the lead in a time of 34.267 seconds. The 11-year-old mare kept her focus inside the arena, and tackled the track with ease.

“We have only had her for about three weeks, so I am just trying to get to know her,” Kerins explained. “I competed last year at The Ridge events, and I know it is difficult to make a plan when you haven’t necessarily seen the other people go, but I was just trying to get to know her, so I gave it a good shot. I think from 1 to 2 in the jump off was where I shaved the most time. I gave that inside turn a go, and it went great.”

Last week’s winner, Samuel Parot, took the second place position, but was still three seconds shy of Kerins speedy round. Jeffery Welles and Antaris S captured the third place in 38.132 seconds.

Kerins continued, “I heard about IPC from the last time it was held there, and it got great reviews, so I wanted to put her into a new environment and know what she was like. She is quite sensitive, and that is another reason why I wanted to see what she was like on the grass. She can sometimes be spooky, but she handled the venue well. Nona [Garson], George [D’Ambrosio] and The Ridge do a great job, and I hope to see it grow.”

Molly Ashe Cawley and Cocq A Doodle were the first to tackle the second track of the day. They took an early lead in the class with a double clear effort in 37.134 seconds. Parot returned to the ring aboard Option D’auge to set the pace at 36.041 seconds to take over the lead. Speed was the name of the game as riders traversed the turf, with seven of the 11 horse and rider combinations going quick and fast. Babington and Baloucat took over the lead in 33.536 seconds, but Ali Wolff had her sights set on the win.

Ali Wolff and Brianda
Ali Wolff and Brianda

Wolff piloted Brianda, her most recent mount, to the top of the leader board with an untouchable time of 32.949 seconds. The 9-year-old mare was able to turn with nimbleness as they navigated the serpentine of the jump off.

“Brianda is the newest member of our family, and funny enough, I sat on her about a year and a half ago, but she was too much horse for me at that time,” Wolff laughed. “This time around she was a great match, and this was our third or fourth class with her so far. She bruised her foot a little bit early on, so this is her first real class; everything else has been schooling classes.”

Wolff continued, “She is fast in terms of her strides and turning, and she has so much scope that I know I can turn back and she will make it over, no matter how much striding or pace I have behind me. I tried to go for a fast clear with tight turns, but not racing. I also wanted to test out her rideability, and how we will fare in the future. I think we are really going to get along. She has such natural ability.”

Babington and Baloucat were awarded the second place, while he also guided Cord 11 to the third place finish. Jonathan McCrea and Brugal VDL rode to the fourth place, and Sarah Wayda and Spargel captured fifth. Parot and Option D’auge rounded out the top six.

“I came out last year for the Friday classes,” Wolff concluded. “The venues are always so nice, and the atmosphere is so pleasant – everyone is happy. It gets so repetitive for 12 weeks in a row at the horse show. It is a great change for both the horses and the riders. I love having the opportunity to go on the grass. We just changed our schedule, so we will be returning on Friday, as well. We love the series so much that we are definitely going to return.”

The stakes are increasing each week as top riders, amateur and professional, vie for their invitation to the $24,750 1.40m Invitational Grand Prix Series Finale on Saturday, March 22, 2014, as well as the coveted Leading Rider Bonus. The Wellington Turf Tour will return to the Schuyler Riley’s Wolfstone Stables next week for the Wednesday and Friday events, but will return to the International Polo Club Palm Beach on a date to be announced soon.

The transportation is a nominal fee of $50 per horse, and will be calculated into the final show fees.
