$35,000 International Hunter Derby in Upstate New York

Mumford, NY – February 3, 2015 – After rave reviews following its inaugural year, The Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum (GCV&M) returns to Mumford, New York on June 6-7, 2015.

The standalone United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) event features both a $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby, to be held on Saturday, and a $35,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, to be held on Sunday.

Last year’s derbies attracted more than 1,000 spectators and some of the sport’s top hunter riders, including Kelley Farmer, Jennifer Alfano, and the International Derby winner Evan Coluccio, all of whom had nothing but rave reviews for the show.

“This is going to become huge. I think this is going to be one of these places that they’re going to have to turn people away because that field is unbelievable,” Alfano said. “It’s beautiful. It rode great. With the museum here you have kind of a built in spectator base. Usually it’s difficult to get this many people to come to a hunter derby.”

All proceeds from the 2015 Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum will benefit Make-A-Wish®.

Evan Coluccio and Fabled Inaugural Winners of $35,000 International Derby at Genesee Country Village & Museum

Evan Coluccio and Fabled

Mumford, NY – June 8, 2014 – Evan Coluccio and Fabled’s ride today marked several firsts, including Fabled’s first win in a hunter derby and the first ever USHJA International Hunter Derby victory at the Genesee Country Village & Museum.

Coluccio and Fabled bested a field of the nation’s leading hunter horses and riders to win the $35,000 USHJA International Derby at The Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum, a brand-new, stand-alone hunter derby event that is already receiving rave reviews across the board.

“Everything was great here today,” said eventual winner Coluccio said. “The course was great; the people are great, and this place is beautiful. I had a good time here.”

Sharing that sentiment was nearby Buffalo, NY resident and acclaimed hunter rider Jennifer Alfano. Alfano shot to the top of the leaderboard in the first round with a beautiful trip aboard her well-known derby mount, Jersey Boy, owned by SBS Farms.

Coluccio and Fabled, owned by Larry Glefke, sat close behind Alfano and Jersey Boy going back for the handy round in the second place spot. Rounding out the top five heading in to the second round were Jennifer Jones riding Redfield Farm’s Countdown and Farmer in both the fourth and fifth place positions with Taken and Unspoken, respectively.

Farmer also sat in the eleventh and seventh place positions with Mindful and So To Speak.

Kelley Farmer and So To Speak

With both Mindful and So To Speak, Farmer utilized what has become her signature bold handiness in a successful effort to climb up the ranks.

The beautiful Bobby Murphy designed handy course opened with a hand gallop to an oxer at the far end of the ring from the in-gate and presented a number of handy options across the field, all of which Farmer executed flawlessly with both Mindful and So To Speak. Mindful’s handy round score would be the second highest of the day only behind So To Speak’s, shooting Mindful from eleventh to fifth and So To Speak from seventh all the way up to second.

Of the initial top three, Jones and Countdown were the first to come back, but an unfortunate three refusals dropped them out of the top ribbon contention.

Coluccio and Fabled were next, and watching their round it is unlikely that any of the numerous spectators surrounding the field would ever have guessed that the talented gelding is only a 7-year-old, First Year Green horse.

“He’s a baby. He’s been shown in maybe seven shows as a hunter,” Coluccio explained. “I really haven’t asked anything like this from him yet.”

That inexperience factored in to how Coluccio rode the first round, electing to forego all but one of the high option fences.

“A lot of people can make mistakes with the high options so I thought let’s take out that variable and just give him a nice round and then go from there,” Coluccio said.

Following a successful first round, and with Alfano coming back after him in the second round, Coluccio took a different approach to the handy phase, taking all four high option fences and a tight, handy route between fences. His efforts earned him scores from the two judging panels of 87 and 88. Those scores coupled with handiness and high option bonuses and their first round total gave Colucci and Fabled an overall, cumulative total of 370.

Hometown favorites and front runners Alfano and Jersey Boy came close to victory, but their final overall score of 361 would put them in third in the final standings and would clinch the win for Coluccio and Fabled.

“He couldn’t have been better,” Coluccio said of Fabled. “He has so much ability. He tries so hard. He wants to do it right; he’s just figuring it out as he’s going sometimes. He’s so easy about everything.”

Coluccio began riding for Glefke and Lane Change Farm at the beginning of the year, and the entire Lane Change Farm team looks forward to returning to The Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum next year.

With an extremely successful first year of great competition and great attendance in the books, The Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum team looks forward to continuing the event next year.

Jennifer Alfano and Me Again Dominate The Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum

Jennifer Alfano and Me Again.

Mumford, NY – June 7, 2014 – Jennifer Alfano has won USHJA National and International Hunter Derbies across the country, and today she added a win at a brand new, beautiful venue to her resume – the victory in the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum.

Alfano clinched the win on the breathtaking Great Meadow of the 19th-Century Country Village aboard Me Again, a Dutch Warmblood owned by Helen Lenahan. The American bred gelding, out of Cardento and bred by Hays Investment Corporation, is only five years old and is just competing in his second year as a pre-green horse.

“He was unbelievable. All along we thought this was going to be a great derby horse,” Alfano said. “He’s brave, scopey and fearless, which he showed here today.”

The Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum presented a beautiful venue that one must see in person to fully appreciate – and that is unlike what most pre-green hunter horses have ever experienced.

“For a young horse to walk out on that field and go like he did I think is amazing,” Alfano said.

The expansive field with slightly graded terrain, ideal grass footing and a beautiful course set by Bobby Murphy served as the perfect setting for the inaugural Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum, the hopeful first of many hunter derbies to come at the 19th century living history museum.

“I think with word of mouth, this is going to get huge,” Alfano said. “I think this is going to be one of these places that they’re going to have to turn people away because that field is unbelievable. It’s beautiful and it rode great.”

Alfano continued, “With the museum here, you have a built in spectator base. You can’t get this many people to come to a hunter derby regularly.”

In front of a full crowd of spectators, Alfano led the pack from beginning to end with the highest score in the first, classic round and the overall highest cumulative score. Her and Me Again’s high scores not only earned them the winner’s share of the prize money; they rode away with a generous donation of products from Shapley’s Superior Equine Grooming Products and a brand-new, meticulously crafted saddle and bridle from the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby sponsor, Henri De Rivel.

Henri De Rivel also donated bridles to each of the top 12 finishers in today’s derby. Earning one of those bridles and giving Alfano and Me Again a run for their money were Rachel Clawson and Sox Appeal, owned by Kelly Waples. The pair came back into the second round sitting in the second place position and a second round score of 81 plus three high option points helped them maintain that position. Rounding out the top three were Jennifer Dahlman and her own The Other Brother.

As one of the nation’s leading hunter riders, Alfano will return to The Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum tomorrow with two of her top mounts, Jersey Boy and Maggie May, for the $35,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby.

The highly anticipated International Hunter Derby kicks off tomorrow at 12 p.m. General admission tickets are available for $17.50 at the door at the Genesee Country Village & Museum. Cost of admission includes entrance to the entire Genesee Country Village & Museum.

Make The Derby Your Post-Devon Destination

Mumford, NY – April 22, 2014 – Hunter riders officially qualified for the 2014 Devon Horse Show should plan to stick around the Northeast for a few extra days this year. Just days after the Devon Horse Show’s $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, The Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum offers riders another lucrative USHJA International Hunter Derby – this time on a scenic grass field and with $35,000 in prize money up for grabs.

The $35,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby will be held on Sunday, June 8, 2014 with a $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby being held in conjunction on Saturday, June 7, 2014. Together the two derbies will make up the inaugural Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum, just one of three stand-alone hunter derby events in the country.

“The stand-alone events are kind of the only true hunter derbies remaining, and there aren’t very many of them,” said Bobby Murphy, course designer for The Derby at Genesee Country Village & Museum and the Chicago Hunter Derby.

The stand-alone format allows for 100 percent of the focus to be centered on creating the ultimate enjoyable experience for the hunter derby horses and riders, as well as spectators. Both the National and International Hunter Derbies will be held on the Great Meadow of the Genesee Country Village & Museum in Mumford, NY, an area extraordinarily rich in equestrian history.

The Genesee Country Village & Museum is reflective of that history, as one of the largest living history museums in the country. It features costumed historic interpreters in restored historic buildings set in a beautifully preserved rural landscape that paints the perfect backdrop for the USHJA National and International Derbies.

Stalls and entries for both classes are already beginning to fill, and all entries are due by mail by May 30, 2014.

Four Weeks of Hunter Derbies and $52,000 in Prize Money in Western New York

Competitive Prize Money Classes Can Help Hunt for Top of USHJA National Hunter Derby Standings

Buffalo, NY – April 16, 2014 – This spring, there will be no better spot for multiple weeks of hunter derby competition on the east coast than Western New York. Between May 15 and June 22, 2014, the Buffalo Showtime Horse Shows and The Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum will provide competitors with a total of four USHJA National Hunter Derbies and one highly-anticipated $35,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby. Together the four hunter derbies offer a lucrative $52,000 in total prize money.

The Buffalo Showtime Horse Shows will offer three $4,000 USHJA National Derbies and The Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum will offer one $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby. With a total of $17,000 up for grabs, the four USHJA National Hunter Derbies provide competitors with the perfect opportunity to accumulate prize money and climb the USHJA Money Won Standings, all while staying in one region.

The Buffalo Showtime I Horse Show will run May 15-18, 2014 at the Fairgrounds Showplex in Hamburg, NY, with the $4,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 and sponsored by Skibbereen Farm.

From there, three back-to-back weeks of hunter derbies kick off with The Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby. The Derby at the GCV&M will become one of only three stand-alone hunter derbies in the country, allowing for emphasis on providing spectators and exhibitors with the highest quality hunter derby experience.

The expansive grassy Great Meadow at the Genesee Country Village & Museum will serve as the backdrop and stage for the National Hunter Derby on Saturday, June 7, 2014.

Less than a week later, riders can return to the show ring at the Buffalo Showtime II Horse Show, running June 12-15, 2014 with the National Hunter Derby, sponsored by Stellar Equestrian, on Saturday, June 14, 2014. The Buffalo Showtime Horse Shows continue the following week with the Buffalo Showtime III Horse Show to be held June 19-22, 2014 with a hunter derby, sponsored by Up the Creek Farm, on Saturday, June 21, 2014.

For riders and owners from USHJA Zone 2, the derbies could have a big, positive impact on their year-end standings. USHJA Money Won Standings by Zone are based on money won solely at competitions held in the owner or rider’s home zone, so with all four derbies in Zone 2, riders and owners have numerous opportunities to climb the ladder.

New Stand-Alone $35,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby! The Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum

Experience the hunt of years gone by

Mumford, NY – January 15, 2014 – On June 7 and 8, 2014, the hunt world of years gone by will intersect with the world of modern day show hunters at only the nation’s third stand-alone USHJA International Hunter Derby – The Derby at the Genesee Country Village & Museum.

Set on the picturesque Great Meadow of the Genesee Country Village & Museum (GCV&M), The Derby will offer an alluring $35,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby on Sun., June 8, as well as a $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby on Sat., June 7.

In the world of derbies, The Derby at GCV&M provides an exciting and exclusive opportunity for riders and spectators alike. As a stand-alone derby, the event is solely and fully dedicated to showcasing and perfecting the derby classes.

“What the USHJA has outlined in their derby specs represents very much where our hunters today come from, from the hunt field,” said show organizer and producer Brian Brown of The Showtime Group. “At the [Genesee Country] Village and Museum, we are able to provide a canvas that meets those specs and reflects that heritage.”

Brown continued, “The Great Meadow [at the Genesee Country Village and Museum] really is just an amazing canvas for a derby. It’s a level field, but it does have three different plateaus on it. So we will have that rolling ground, which just makes it even more exciting and more authentic to a hunt field.”

The Derby at GCV&M’s ties to the fox hunting field and the heritage of our hunters today expanding well beyond the grass field on which it will be held. The Genesee Valley is extremely rich in equestrian history, and the Genesee Valley Hunt itself is one of the oldest and largest hunts still active today.

The Genesee Country Village & Museum is reflective of that area’s history, as one of the largest living history museums in the country. It features costumed interpreters in restored historic buildings set in a beautifully preserved rural landscape that paints the perfect backdrop for the USHJA National and International Derbies.

“There’s such a strong horse heritage in the area, and with an event like this it’s going to be wonderful to be able to bring that back and showcase that for the riders and for Western New York as a social event,” Brown said. “It’s not just a horse show. With the prize money involved, the people involved and it being a stand-alone event, it’s really going to be something special for our spectators and competitors.”
