Cowboy Up for the SBA Reined Cow Horse Experience!

Rick Steed gives a bridleless demonstration.

Indiantown, FL – February 21, 2014 – Put on your cowboy boots and prepare for the ride of your life! Show by Appointment and Steed Training are teaming up to offer the SBA Reined Cow Horse Experience. Whether you’re an experienced equestrian in the English disciplines, a Western rider who’s interested in reined cow horse events, or someone who has never been on a horse before, the SBA team is ready to create a thrilling and memorable experience for you.

By the end of the day, you’ll be amazed at how much you’ve accomplished and hooked on the excitement of this addicting sport. Rick and Trevor Steed of Steed Training and assistants from the SBA team provide personalized instruction to ensure all participants have the skills they need to work with a live cow. The cow horses used for the program are highly schooled and have impressive resumes, many of them boasting multiple championship titles.

The experience begins in style with a luxurious limo ride to the beautiful Bynum Farms in Indiantown, FL. Owned by SBA co-founder Blair Bynum, the facility plays host to SBA’s popular winter series of reined cow horse shows and is the perfect spot for a relaxing getaway.

Upon arrival, mount up and learn the basic cues necessary for the day’s activities. You’ll practice your moves while chasing a mechanical cow and then head into the arena for instruction from Rick Steed. Learn each component of a reining pattern, including high-speed spins and sliding stops.

After a lunch break, which can include a wildlife tour of the nearby J & R Outfitters (http://www.jroutfitters.com) exotic game preserve on picturesque open land, it’s time to get back in the saddle. You’ll first work with a mounted instructor to learn the basics, and then it’s back to the arena to see how much you’ve learned and test your skills with a live cow! Let your horse do his job, hold on tight and, above all else, don’t look away from the cow as you and your horse work as a team to keep the cow at one end of the ring.

Contact Rick Steed at 772-263-6830 or sbainfo@centurylink.net to find out more.

To get a glimpse of what’s in store when you book an SBA Reined Cow Horse experience, come check out an SBA show! Bynum Farms is hosting a show this weekend, Feb. 22-23, and you can get a firsthand look at the fun that’s in store. Admission is free, so stop by and see what it’s all about! Spectator highlights include Down the Hairy Fence, a thrilling competition during which top riders work the cows at high speed. It will be held Saturday at 4 p.m.

Feedback from SBA Reined Cow Horse Experience Participants

“I loved getting to try a new style of riding. We really got to try everything the instructors showed us; they didn’t ‘dumb’ it down or simplify the experience. The horses were fabulous and knew their job, which made the riding that much better. Instructors took the time to thoroughly explain how to do everything, and there was a lot of practice, which helped set you up for success.”

-J. P., Massachusetts

“I was really looking forward to the SBA Reined Cow Horse Experience going into it. I’d heard riding reined cow horses would be a lot of fun, but it definitely blew even my initial high expectations out of the water! I never expected that by the end of the day I would be working an actual cow! That had to be one of the coolest riding experiences that I’ve ever had. Rick Steed and the entire SBA team were so patient with our group of entirely English riders, who had never done anything like that before, and they definitely showed us a good time!”

-E. R., Pennsylvania

“I can’t say enough good things about the SBA Reined Cow Horse Experience. It’s first class all the way with friendly staff, well-trained horses, a beautiful facility and attention to detail. What a blast! May I come again next week?”

-S. W., Texas

Blair Bynum and Rick Steed Look to the Future with Show by Appointment

Indiantown, FL – February 10, 2014 – Show by Appointment is off to a good start in its second year, and founders Blair Bynum and Rick Steed are making plans for the season while also investigating the possibility of moving SBA’s base to Wellington, FL, for the 2015 competition year.

Bynum and Steed began the reined cow horse show series in 2013 to provide a new alternative for riders looking for a fun, fair and affordable competition. In its first year, SBA hosted shows in Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio and Florida, capping the season with the richest cow horse show in the East – the SBA Championship Finals, offering $100,000 in cash and prizes.

The Championship Finals were held at Triple J Ranch in Sarasota, FL, in 2013, and they will return to Sarasota for the 2014 season. Bynum Farms in Indiantown, FL, hosts SBA’s winter circuit. Bynum and Steed are considering a move to the winter equestrian hotspot of Wellington, which attracts the best show jumping and dressage competitors from around the world.

The Finals, which were a big hit in their first year, appeal to competitors and spectators alike. The generous prize money offered is a major draw, and the straightforward path to qualification ensures that all riders are on a level playing field and have a chance to test themselves against the best at the Finals.

Among the featured events at the Finals is Down the Hairy Fence. The fast-paced fence run only competition keeps spectators on the edge of their seats as they watch top riders go all out for the win.

Now, they’re back for their second season of offering shows around the country, culminating in the richest cow horse show on the East Coast: the second annual SBA Championship Finals.

For the 2014 season, the Finals will again offer a guaranteed $100,000 in cash and prizes. They are scheduled for Jan. 8-11, 2015, at the Triple J Ranch in Sarasota, FL.

Show by Appointment (SBA) is committed to making shows “Fun, Fair, and Affordable” for participants. They earned a loyal following in their first year by ensuring that each and every horse was judged fairly and creating a fun, family-friendly environment.

The first annual $100,000 SBA Championship Finals were held at the Triple J Ranch on Oct. 10-13, 2013. Competitors could qualify by competing in any of the SBA circuits around the country, including locations in Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio and Florida. The Finals were a great success and featured fantastic prizes and top-notch competition.

SBA kicked off 2014 with the first show of their winter circuit at Bynum Farms in Indiantown, FL. Held Jan. 18-19, the show got the season off to a great start. The Level 1 Boxing and Little Britches classes were particularly popular, as SBA strives to create a positive experience for lower level and young riders.

Show by Appointment’s First Championship Finals Come to a Close

Morgan Holmes and Smart Shooter.

Sarasota, FL – October 13, 2013 – Show by Appointment’s inaugural Championship Finals concluded on Sunday at the Triple J Ranch in Sarasota, FL. Youth, Level One and Level Two Boxing, and Two Rein riders came out for their second go, and champions received generous cash awards and prizes sponsored by Skyline Vaquero, Don Rich Saddlery and J. W. Brooks Custom Hats.

Jay Holmes, who owns and operates Triple J Ranch with his wife, Rhonda, was happy to host the Finals.

“It was great to have it here,” Holmes said. “It was a wonderful show and a good family climate. We need to have more shows like this. The judging was good – everybody who won a championship earned it. Everyone should be tickled to death. The cattle were very nice this weekend, and you’ll never hear a complaint about the footing in our arena.”

The final day kicked off with the Open and Non Pro Two Rein Classes. The Open Two Rein was a competitive division with several high-scoring runs. Ultimately, Rick Steed and 177 Performance Horses’ Justa Merada Nut came out on top with an impressive overall score of 290.

Morgan Holmes continued her streak of top finishes at the Finals by claiming two championships: the Non Pro Two Rein with Im Dun R U and the Youth Bridle with Smart Shooter. She earned total scores of 206 with her own Smart Shooter and 284.5 with Im Dun R U, who is owned by her father, Jay Holmes.

“The weekend’s been great,” Holmes said. “I really like all of my horses that I’m showing this year, so that makes it fun. I love Im Dun R U. We bred, raised and trained her. I started showing her when she was 3 and she’s 6 now. So we’re pretty good together.”

“Smart Shooter is my old horse,” she continued. “I’ve shown him in everything – he’s won world championships two times in the cow horse and one time in the roping with me. He’s my baby.”

John Jacobs and Miss Chic Dun It

John Jacobs was recognized as the Intermediate Open Hackamore champion on Blair Bynum’s Miss Chic Dun It with a score of 280.5. The division concluded on Saturday but results were finalized Sunday morning after a video review by judge Bill Enk. SBA’s policies to ensure fair judging allow competitors to request a video review of their ride if they have questions about how they were scored.

“Our cow work was good,” Jacobs said of his ride on Saturday. “We had the luck of the draw and drew a good cow. He pushed on the horse a little bit, which helped us have a higher degree of difficulty and score well. I think Miss Chic Dun It will be a great horse for a non pro rider, since she is quiet and has a good mind.”

Jacobs said he enjoyed being a part of the inaugural SBA Championship Finals. “It was a lot of fun,” he said. “Everyone I talked to was really happy with how it went. It was a good year to be here, and I think there will be a lot of people here next year. Their payout was great and they did a nice job with the show.”

Kristin Cosentino paired with Hannibal Lecter, owned by Murray Logan, for the Level Two Boxing championship. Their score of 285.5 earned them the top spot.

“I’m happy with my cow work,” Cosentino said. “It was really fun. I can’t wait until next year!”

The championship in the Level One Boxing went to Tracy Jo McFadden, also riding Hannibal Lecter. McFadden earned a composite score of 293.5 over two days of competition.

“I feel really good about the weekend,” she said. “Today I tried to correct mistakes from my previous runs, and it came together really well. I wanted to keep my lines a little bit straighter and work on making my circles nice and round.”

“I feel so blessed for the opportunity to do this,” she continued. “I’m from Nevada, and I’d like to get some more people on the West Coast involved so we can get some of the shows going over there. The atmosphere here was great, and it was extremely nice to be at a show where you didn’t have to stand around and wait. I could just focus on my ride. The arena was great, the dirt was good and the people were wonderful.”

Haily Findeisen and Suz Mountain Dew, owned by Barry Spinweber, took home the Youth Boxing championship with a score of 291.5. Christina Cross stayed on top of the Little Britches division to claim the championship with a total score of 286.5, despite a determined effort by twin sister Victoria to overtake her in the standings. Another set of sisters, Carolina and Cecilia Sanchez, also had great rides in that division on Sunday.

Rick Steed and Justa Merada Nut

Blair Bynum and Rick Steed of Show by Appointment said they were pleased with the season finale.

“It was a huge success,” Steed said. “We want to thank everyone for their support, and we look forward to seeing you next year.”

“We want to thank Jay for the use of his great facility and all of his help throughout the Finals,” Bynum added.

Now that its first Championship Finals have concluded, Show by Appointment will be making plans for a full season of competition around the country in 2014. Show by Appointment Crowns Champions at Inaugural Finals

Shaun McBride and Pao Pao Chex.

Sarasota, FL – October 12, 2013 – Show by Appointment awarded its first set of championships on Saturday at the SBA Championship Finals, held at Triple J Ranch in Sarasota, FL. Open and Non Pro Bridle and Hackamore divisions, as well as Non Pro Boxing, all wrapped up on Saturday as riders returned for their second go and vied for top honors.

Champions took home generous cash awards as well as prizes from three sponsors: Don Rich Saddlery, J. W. Brooks Custom Hats and Skyline Vaquero. J. W. Brooks was on hand to measure winners for their custom-made hats.

“We’re really excited about this new event, and it’s an event that we believe in: we think it’s going to go far,” Brooks said. “We’re proud to be here and to be a part of the beginning. They’ve done a great job with it so far, and we’re excited to be involved.”

“I think we get a pretty good response out of giving away custom hats because it’s something that not everybody gets – it’s a little different from the norm,” he added. “We can measure all the winners and make a hat that’s perfect for them. Everyone has been very positive about it.”

Don Rich Saddlery’s finely crafted saddles were a hit with the lucky champions who earned them. Don Rich was also on hand at the Finals on Saturday to present saddles.

“I’m proud to be a part of it,” Rich said. “SBA is a good organization and it’s going to be great for the cow horse industry, especially here in the East. It seems like everyone’s loved the saddles so far, and we’ll get more feedback once everyone rides in them and sees how they like them.”

Skyline Vaquero, which provided beautiful custom buckles and knives, added to their initial sponsorship to ensure that champions at all levels, from top professionals to beginners just starting out in the sport, would receive fitting recognition for their accomplishments.

“We know the beginning people really want a belt buckle, so we increased our sponsorships to provide that for them,” Dave Hammonds of Skyline Vaquero said.

The day began with the second go for riders in the Open Bridle divisions. The Open Bridle championship went to Rick Steed and Murray Logan’s Whiz Bar Sooper, who achieved a composite score of 293 over two days of competition. Shaun McBride paired with Pao Pao Chex, owned by Paula Burnett, for the Intermediate Open Bridle championship, scoring 287 to take the top spot. Trevor Steed rode Toni Steed’s Gunna Miss You to top honors in the 2K Open Bridle division with a score of 283.5.

Lucas McCullough and Nice Bobby Sox
Lucas McCullough and Nice Bobby Sox

After the Open Bridle divisions, Non Pro Bridle and Boxing riders took center stage. Lucas McCullough and Nice Bobby Sox, owned by Jean McCullough, scored 290.5 in the Non Pro Bridle to take home the championship.

“It feels great – it was a fun day,” McCullough said. “The championship early in the day was a big relief. It helped me focus on my second horse [Tinsel Lena in the Non Pro Hackamore] and not worry, since I already had something good going. I won $5,000 and a custom-made hat by J. W. Brooks. I’m really excited about that.”

Barry Spinweber and his own Suz Mountain Dew claimed double championships in the Intermediate Non Pro Bridle and 2K Non Pro Bridle. “He’s a good horse,” Spinweber said. “He’s strong in the reining and good at the fence work – just a great all-around horse.”

“The reining was a highlight today,” he continued. “My cow was really fast going down the fence. I didn’t know if I would quite catch up to him before the end of the arena, but luckily, we made it. I won a ton of money and I won my first saddle, as well as a hat and a nice knife, so that’s really cool.”

Dwyatt Bull and his own Khatch a Diamond were impressive in the 2K Non Pro Boxing, claiming the championship on a total score of 281.5. In the Non Pro Boxing, Verna Benbow and 177 Performance Horses’ Choco Latte Lena earned 285 overall to secure the championship. Benbow was thrilled with her win.

“It’s just wonderful,” Benbow said. “I’m very surprised. I appreciate the people I ran against. They make you a better rider. And I’m grateful for all the help from Jay Holmes, Rick Steed, Robert Smith – everybody who has helped me get here. I was very happy with my high reining score today, and it’s great to win at the first Show by Appointment finals.”

Benbow also credited her horse with a great effort. “She carries me,” Benbow said. “I know I had to ride her, but she carries me. She makes me a better rider. I feel very blessed.”

Corey Rodgers and Dun It Big N Smart
Corey Rodgers and Dun It Big N Smart

Open and Non Pro Hackamore classes closed out Saturday’s competition. Jay Holmes and his own Senor Dun It maintained their lead in the Open Hackamore, taking the championship with a score of 293.5. Corey Rodgers and Joana Azevedo’s Dun It Big N Smart scored 280 overall to claim the 2K Open Hackamore title.

Morgan Holmes continued a successful weekend at the Finals by riding her own Mutt to the Non Pro Hackamore championship with a score of 287. Jeff Pressler and Paula Burnett’s Oh Cay Floyd collected a total score of 270, earning them the 2K Non Pro Hackamore championship.

Interspersed with the championships were three Derby classes. Jay Holmes won the Open Derby on Jen Frame’s Junkyard Cat, scoring 221 for the three phases of herd work, reining and fence work, while Morgan Holmes secured the win in the Non Pro Derby on Mutt with a score of 214. Jen Frame and her own One Time Bugsy scored 207.5 to take first place in the Non Pro Boxing Derby.

“He’s really a trouper,” Frame said of One Time Bugsy. “He’s a very honest horse – very steady and consistent.”

She added that she was happy to be at SBA’s first Championship Finals. “It’s exciting to be part of something new like this,” she said.

Saturday evening was highlighted by the debut of a unique SBA class, the Horse Sale Class showcasing sale horses to potential buyers. Show by Appointment’s first Championship Finals conclude on Sunday, when championships will be determined for Open and Non Pro Two Rein, Level One and Level Two Boxing, Youth Bridle and Boxing, and Little Britches Boxing.

Robert J. Smith III and Morgan Holmes Earn Greatest Caballero Titles at SBA Championship Finals

Robert J. Smith III and Fletchs Shorty Lena.

Sarasota, FL – October 11, 2013 – The Greatest Caballero Competition highlighted the second day of Show by Appointment’s Championship Finals at the Triple J Ranch in Sarasota, FL. After strong performances in Thursday’s herd work, reining and fence work, riders vying for the title of Greatest Caballero came back to test their skills in steer stopping under the lights on Friday evening.

Robert J. Smith III and Fletchs Shorty Lena, owned by Ora Diehl, showed their consistency throughout all phases of competition to be crowned Greatest Open Caballero. Morgan Holmes and Jay Holmes’ Dun It Big took the title of Greatest Non Pro Caballero.

“The steer stopping is another aspect of the cow horse – it shows the all-around ability of the horse,” Smith said. “It would have been better if I could have caught my first loop, but my horse worked great and the steers were good.”

Holmes was on top of her game throughout the day, which included the first go for riders in most of the championship divisions. Along with her Greatest Non Pro Caballero title, she took the lead in three divisions: the Non Pro Hackamore on her own Mutt, with a score of 145, the Youth Bridle on her own Smart Shooter, with a score of 133.5, and the Non Pro Two Rein on Jay Holmes’ Im Dun R U, with a score of 142.5.

Morgan Holmes and Smart Shooter

“My day was awesome, and the horses were really good,” Holmes said. She was happy to be competing Dun It Big after his long hiatus from the show ring, and although she had some trouble in the steer stopping, she enjoyed the experience nonetheless. “It was cool to be able to do something like that on him,” she said.

Her father, Jay Holmes, came out strong in the Open Hackamore, scoring 145 to lead the class with his own Senor Dun It. In the 2K Open Hackamore, Corey Rodgers and Joana Azevedo’s Dun It Big N Smart earned a score of 137.5 to sit in first place. John Jacob and Blair Bynum’s Miss Chic Dun It took an early lead in the Intermediate Open Hackamore with 140.5.

“We had good, clean rein work and drew a good cow,” Jacob said. “The mare is a nice, quiet young horse. You can put kids on her – she has that type of mind, but she really can perform as well. She is for sale, and I believe she’ll be a great bridle horse as she gets more seasoned.”

“The footing is always nice at Triple J,” he continued. “It’s good for the rein work, because it’s going to let your horses go, but it’s deep enough for your cow work, so they don’t fall out from underneath you. They always have great dirt. The cows have been great all weekend – very consistent.”

Other riders leading the way in the championships include Rick Steed and 177 Performance Horses’ Justa Merada Nut, who earned 146 in the Open Two Rein, Jeff Pressler and Paula Burnett’s Oh Cay Floyd, who scored 137 in the 2K Non Pro Hackamore, and Jody Brooks and Murray Logan’s Whiz Bar Sooper, who are out in front in the Level Two Boxing with 144.5.

Haily Findeisen and Barry Spinweber’s Suz Mountain Dew moved into first in the Youth Boxing with a strong score of 146.5. “I was happy with everything, especially with the cow,” Findeisen said. “I just started riding this horse after my horse passed away two months ago. It’s been difficult, but this horse is really broke and easy to ride. I’m looking forward to making another clean and good run on Sunday.”

Tracy Jo McFadden and Murray Logan’s Hannibal Lecter scored an impressive 146 to hold the lead in the Level One Boxing. McFadden just recently got back in the saddle after having a spinal fusion six months ago.

“I’m on cloud nine right now,” McFadden said. “I’d had all this major surgery – the spinal fusion, and I had my knee done three weeks ago. But I really wanted to compete in the Championship Finals after qualifying. So the doctor gave me the okay on Friday to ride.”

She enjoyed the ride on Hannibal Lecter. “He’s super energetic and absolutely beautiful,” she said. “He moves really nice – super smooth. He takes his cues from you, so you have to be really quiet. But he’s sweet and kind as can be, and he has a lot of heart.”

“The facility here is really nice, and the arena’s amazing,” she added.

The leader after the first go in the Little Britches Youth class is Christina Cross, who rode Smarty to a score of 143. Cross competes in the Little Britches alongside her twin sister, Victoria. The twins just turned 9 on Monday. A year ago, for their 8th birthday, their present was their first riding lesson with Rick Steed. They’ve come a long way in their riding since then: this year, their present was becoming the new owners of the horses they have been riding.

“Smarty is a really good cow horse,” Christina Cross said. “His trot is bumpy but his canter is nice. It’s fun to go fast, and the horses are really fun.”

After the day’s championship classes wrapped up, spectators and competitors gathered to enjoy hors d’oeuvres sponsored by 177 Performance Horses and watch some of Show By Appointment’s special offerings. The Greatest Caballero Competition’s steer stopping led things off, followed by Down the Hairy Fence, an exciting fence run only competition that kept onlookers on the edge of their seats. Josh Veal and Miss Cat Kimlena put in a thrilling performance down the fence and earned the highest score of the class.

“It was smooth and fast,” Veal said of his ride. “Everything flowed really well. The only way you can score big is to have a fast cow and a high degree of difficulty.”

He said he enjoyed the fast pace of Down the Hairy Fence. “The whole atmosphere is great. The fence work is what we all try to work up to. The herd work and the reining all build up to the fence work, which is like a finale to us.”

“I’ve shown all over the country, and Triple J Ranch is one of the best places,” he added. “The ground is great, the cows are great, the people are great – everything is set up to flow easily. This has always been one of the best places to come. Everybody helps and roots each other on.”

Many of the riders who had their first go today will return on Saturday to finish out the championship classes, while others will complete their divisions on Sunday. The Horse Sale Class is the evening highlight on Saturday. Horses for sale will be exhibited in front of potential buyers, who can see what the horses are capable of and how they perform in a show atmosphere. Saturday also features the Open, Non Pro, and Non Pro Boxing Derbies.

Show by Appointment Kicks Off Championship Finals with Bridle Spectacular

Robert J. Smith III and Fletchs Shorty Lena.

Sarasota, FL – October 10, 2013 – Show by Appointment opened its inaugural Championship Finals with a day packed full of reined cow horse action. Held at the Triple J Ranch in Sarasota, FL, on Oct. 10-13, the Finals have brought horses and riders from across the country together to test their skills and compete for championship titles and generous prizes.

The morning began with herd work for competitors in the Open and Non Pro divisions of the Greatest Caballero Competition and Bridle Spectacular, as well as the Non Pro Boxing Bridle Spectacular. Riders in those classes then moved on to the reining and fence work for their respective divisions.

Robert J Smith III and Fletchs Shorty Lena came away with the title in the Open Bridle Spectacular, earning $1679.33, while Morgan Holmes and Dun It Big claimed first place and $1007.60 in prize money in the Non Pro Bridle Spectacular. Jen Frame and Thats Stylin won the Non Pro Boxing Bridle Spectacular.

Holmes and Smith credited their horses with putting in strong performances. Dun It Big, owned by Jay Holmes, and Fletchs Shorty Lena, owned by Ora Diehl, are both seasoned competitors with world championship titles to their names.

“My horse is awesome,” Holmes said. “He hasn’t been shown in three years, so he was ready to be shown. He was not going to lose today! He was in the zone. He’s a three-time world champion, and he gets pretty excited about going in the show ring.”

“He’s a pretty consistent horse,” Smith said of Fletchs Shorty Lena. “He’s also won three world championships. He’s won $30,000 in the cutting and close to $20,000 in the cow horse.”

Smith said he’s ridden several different disciplines, but enjoys riding reined cow horses most of all. “I showed English horses and pleasure horses and rope horses, and cow horses are just more fun, so I stuck with them,” he explained.

Smith and Holmes both have a full weekend ahead of them, with several more rides to come. Holmes is excited to partner with Dun It Big again to finish out the Non Pro Bridle championship, while Smith is looking forward to showing in the Two Rein division.

“I really like my two rein horse,” Smith said. “I’ve owned him since he was a 2-year-old, and he’s become very consistent.”

Jen Frame, the Non Pro Boxing Bridle Spectacular winner aboard Thats Stylin, will also be back in the arena throughout the weekend. She said Thats Stylin, whom she’s owned since the mare was 2 years old, showed her usual work ethic today.

“She was really strong on the cow,” Frame said. “She did great in herd work this morning too, so it felt good. She’s my Old Faithful. She comes to work every day to get the job done – she’s really dependable and really fun to ride.”

Frame, who lives in Kentucky, got her first taste of the unique format and atmosphere of Show by Appointment at SBA’s summer shows in Unadilla, TN.

“It looked like a neat new idea, a different way of doing things, and I enjoy trying new things,” she noted. “I went and showed at Tennessee, and it was a lot of fun and a good group of people. So I decided to come back!”

Alongside the Bridle Spectacular classes, several divisions had their first go of the Championship Finals. Open and Non Pro Bridle, Intermediate Bridle, and 2K Bridle competitors were given their first chances to impress the judge and earn a top placing. The championships in those classes will be determined later in the weekend.

Day one of the Championship Finals concluded with a barbecue sponsored by the Ohio Reined Cow Horse Association and a preview of the Horse Sales Class, scheduled for Saturday evening. The Finals resume Friday morning, when riders in the remaining divisions will have their first go. Friday evening features Down the Hairy Fence, a highlight of the Finals that brings out top riders for a fast-paced test of horsemanship.

SBA Championship Finals Offer Top-Notch Competition and Entertainment

Kristin Cosentino. Photos by Gayae Ghazaryan.

Sarasota, FL – October 4, 2013 – Show by Appointment is getting ready to wrap up a successful first year of reined cow horse competition with its much-anticipated Championship Finals. The Finals, which will take place Oct. 10-13 at Triple J Ranch in Sarasota, FL, offer over $100,000 in cash and prizes. Spectators are welcome and will enjoy the excitement and family-friendly atmosphere that are SBA trademarks.

The Championship Finals offer divisional championships for competitors at all levels who have qualified through SBA’s regional circuits throughout the year. SBA has hosted circuits in Indiantown, FL, Unadilla, GA, and Jackson, OH. They also collaborated with National Reined Cow Horse Association (NRCHA) affiliates to co-sanction shows in Murfreesboro, TN, and Sarasota, FL.

Qualified riders are looking forward to the high level of competition and generous prize money at the Finals.

“I’m looking forward to so many things,” Kristin Cosentino said. “Of course the main goal is winning and it would be awesome to win, but just to be there will be the best thing ever for someone like me. It’ll be really exciting to see everyone go out there and do what they can do. I’m going to be overly excited to be there – I think the whole time I’ll be shaking! I’m hoping most of my family can come out, and most of my friends to see me ride.”

Josh Veal
Josh Veal

“The money and prizes at the Finals are really good, better than most shows because it’s guaranteed money,” Josh Veal explained. “That makes a huge difference for trainers and especially owners.”

Andreas Sanchez and his daughters Cecilia and Carolina will be attending October’s Championship Finals together. “We’re going to be there as a whole family,” he said. “It should be nice – there should be quite a few people there.”

Along with the divisional championships, several specialty classes are also offered at the Finals. The Horse Sale Class is an unjudged exhibition that gives owners the opportunity to show off their sale horses to prospective buyers. Each horse and rider will take a turn in the arena to demonstrate their ability while the announcer gives details about the horse’s background and experience. View current entries here:  http://www.showbyappointment.com/Horse-Sale-Entries.html.

Thursday evening features the Stallion Stakes Horse Sale. Owners may nominate a single stallion or their ranch. With a ranch nomination, any horse on the ranch may be sold in the Horse Sale. Three-year-olds may be nominated for the Stallion Stakes Class and compete as 4-year-olds for Stallion Stakes money.

Down the Hairy Fence, a fence run only class, is always a highlight of SBA shows and will be especially exciting at the Finals. Top professional riders pull out all the stops as they work a cow down the fence, showcasing their horses’ speed and agility as they compete for first place honors.

A seminar for judges will be held just after the Finals on Oct. 14-15. Led by Bill Enk, the NRCHA Director of Judges, the seminar will provide an opportunity to test for the NRCHA and SBA judge’s card or simply audit and learn about the judging process and scoring system. The cost to test or audit is $125. Contact Debbie Hall at debbie@firststringfarms.com to learn more and register.

East Coast Reined Cow Horse Classic Teams with Show by Appointment to Offer Finals Qualification Opportunity

Murfreesboro, TN – July 11, 2013 – Show by Appointment (SBA) and the East Coast Reined Cow Horse Classic (ECRCHC) are teaming up to offer competitors another chance to qualify for SBA’s $100,000 Championship Finals. SBA will run a full set of classes concurrently with the classes at ECRCHC, which will be held July 17-21 at the Tennessee Miller Coliseum in Murfreesboro, TN.

By entering the SBA classes as well as their regular classes, riders can compete for two show associations, ECRCHC and SBA, and two sets of prize money with just one run. Part of SBA’s mission is to make reined cow horse showing more affordable, and the collaboration with ECRCHC serves this purpose by allowing riders to qualify for the Championship Finals without having to spend another weekend on the road traveling to a show.

“We’re teaming up with the other biggest cow horse show on the East Coast,” said Show by Appointment’s Rick Steed. “We’re partnering with them to run SBA classes concurrently with their classes and give riders another chance to qualify while they’re already at the show.”

Along with the opportunity to qualify for the $100,000 SBA Championship Finals, riders who enter the SBA classes have a shot at claiming a circuit championship. SBA circuits are typically comprised of four shows in a certain region. At ECRCHC, riders will compete on two days and be assessed by two judges each time. Each judge will be counted as a show for the purposes of calculating the championships, and circuit champions will be presented with awards at the show.

“We’re working together to build a stronger cow horse community,” Steed said. “This is a combined effort. We’d like to thank all of the East Coast trainers and competitors for their support.”

Riders should contact SBA show secretary Debbie Hall at debbie@firststringfarms.com or 321-863-0456 to pre-enter for the SBA classes at ECRCHC and claim their chance to compete in the $100,000 SBA Championship Finals, slated for October 10-13 in Sarasota, FL.

Show by Appointment Reined Cow Horse Series Announces Winter Circuit Champions

Trevor Steed and Gunna Miss You – Photo by Kristin Constantini.

Indiantown, FL – May 3, 2013 – Show by Appointment, a new reined cow horse series with the mission of making showing “Fun, Fair, and Affordable,” concluded its debut season in Florida with a well-attended show on April 20-21 at Bynum Farms in Indiantown, FL. Now that the four shows of the winter season are complete, SBA has tallied the points and would like to congratulate its circuit champions in each division.

Show by Appointment offers a variety of divisions to allow all riders to compete in classes appropriate to their level and experience. Trevor Steed, who took home championships and reserves in the 2K Open Bridle and 2K Open Hackamore divisions, said he appreciated the options.

“The way we have the classes split up is helpful,” he said. “I’m new to the Open this year, so I compete in a class with new trainers like me that are not as experienced. It gives me success while I’m learning.”

Show by Appointment allows competitors to schedule their own ride times, which makes it easier for those who are traveling or have busy schedules to find time to compete. Steed assisted with the shows, working cow pens and making sure riders were ready to go on time, and found he was still able to fit his rides in over the course of the day. “I could go and work pens and get everything done, and then I could go and show my horse when it’s convenient,” he explained.

Steed rode several young horses on the SBA circuit and said he felt it was a perfect format for training and showing horses without putting undue stress on them. Since there are only four shows in each circuit and riders start with a clean slate at the championship finals, there’s no pressure to compete constantly to gain points.

“We’re going out and showing the horses for the horses and their training, not for a paycheck or a ribbon,” Steed said, noting that he was happy to be able to go into finals with fresh horses. “It’s really been good for my babies – I showed two 4-year-olds and I was able to go out and coast on them, getting them ready. I could get all the parts in place without getting them worried. That’s one thing I’ve really enjoyed about it.”

Ray Mullis rode Just Plain Cat to the championship in the Non Pro Boxing division. He said he thought SBA’s format would make it successful. “They’re doing a great thing,” Mullis said. “I think it’s going to work and I want to be a part of it. You can show when you want to, and it costs you a lot less – there are a lot of benefits.”

Mullis, who has a muscle disease, finds the flexible scheduling to be especially helpful. “I can set the time later on in the day,” he explained. “It’s accommodating to my body.”

Lucas McCullough, the Non Pro Hackamore Champion on Tinsel Lena, agreed with Mullis that the SBA format makes showing more convenient. “You can get there and take your time, do it when you want to do it,” he commented. “You don’t have to rush your horse. Everybody’s relaxed and everybody helps you out.”

Haily Findeisen, who earned the Level Two Boxing and Youth Boxing championships with Sparkinastar and also rode Photons Classic CD to the Youth Boxing reserve championship, described the show atmosphere as “inviting.” She said that she enjoys reined cow horse competition because of the combination of the reining pattern with the chance to work a cow.

Other championship winners include Victoria Cross in the Little Britches, Kristin Constantini in the Level One Boxing, Morgan Holmes in the Youth Bridle, Tom Benbow in the 2K Non Pro Boxing, Jamie Johnson in the Non Pro Two Rein, Ron Whittaker in the Intermediate Non Pro Bridle, John Jacob in the Intermediate Open Bridle and Hackamore, and Rick Steed, who swept the Open Bridle, Hackamore and Two Rein championships. The complete list of champions and reserve champions is below.

Show by Appointment competition continues throughout the year. The SBA Summer Circuit Show Series I will be in Unadilla, GA, on May 18-19 and June 29-30. SBA will then head to Jackson, OH, for the Summer Circuit Show Series II on August 15-18. SBA also plans to expand into other states, so keep an eye out for further announcements.

The year concludes with the SBA Championship Finals, held October 10-13 in Sarasota, FL. Championship winners from the Florida circuit are already eagerly anticipating the tough competition and fun times at the Finals.

“I’m looking forward to the competition,” McCullough said. “I think everybody there will be bringing it!”

Findeisen plans to keep improving and train up to the event. “I’m looking forward to getting better until the show in October and working on it with both horses,” she said.

Trevor Steed echoed McCullough’s sentiments. “I think there are going to be plenty of people there who will be tough to beat,” he said. “I think my horses are going to be ready too. It’ll be a fun show.”
