Sarah Segal Speeds to the Win in $40,000 Commonwealth Grand Prix

Sarah Segal on Cantara 59.

Lexington, KY – May 14, 2017 – The Kentucky Spring Horse Show concluded a week of action packed hunter and jumper competition at the Kentucky Horse Park. There was no shortage of excitement in Rolex Stadium. Under perfect blue skies, Sarah Segal and Cantara 59 won the $40,000 Commonwealth Grand Prix presented by Audi of Lexington, while Lacey Gilbertson and Baloppi topped the Under 25 Grand Prix presented by Hollow Creek Farm.

Cantara 59 has been part of Segal’s string of show horses for two years but Segal has been taking her time with the 11-year-old Hanoverian mare. Segal made the decision to only compete Cantara 59 in select CSI2* Grand Prix classes at the end of the Winter Equestrian Festival and chose to come to the Kentucky Spring Horse Show as her first show of the 2017 summer competition season. The pair went towards the midpoint of the class which featured 43 horses and riders. After jumping a tidy clear round, they returned as part of a field of 12 in the jump off on Sunday afternoon.

While there were many fast riders in the jump-off round, including Todd Minikus, Aaron Vale, Samuel Parot and Amanda Derbyshire, just to name a few, Segal stuck to her plan with Cantara 59 and put in a blistering pace of 44.705. Aaron Vale achieved a faultless round but came up short with a time of 45.946. Ramio Quintana and Iluna finished third in a time of 46.783.

Just before the $40,000 Commonwealth Grand Prix, another lady rider, Lacey Gilbertson, stole the show in the $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix, sponsored by Hollow Creek Farm. Gilbertson did not have the opportunity to watch many of her peers rounds in the class of twenty-eight as she went early in the long course and first in the jump-off. Gilbertson knew that with six other riders vying for the blue ribbon she would need to ride Baloppi smart and fast. The ten-year-old Danish Warmblood mare did not miss step and jumped an impressive clear round in 38.457 that proved impossible to beat. Hollow Creek Farm’s own Emanuel Andrade was second on Jenni’s Chance in 39.76 and Kaley Tomue placed third with Gentille in 40.211.

Although Aaron Vale did not win a class, he did earn the title of Envisian Products Leading Jumper Rider for this week’s competition. Envisian Products sponsor the weekly Leading Jumper Rider Award, which will be presented following the Sunday Grand Prix, each week of the 2017 Kentucky Horse Shows series. Brian and Visse Wedell are partners in Envisian Products, which offers several products and services, but is presenting this award with a focus on Polylast Rubberized Flooring.

Sarah Segal Gets a Taste of Glory in $30,000 SmartPak Wild Card Grand Prix

©ESI Photography. Sarah Segal and Ubris claim the $30,000 SmartPak Wild Card Grand Prix.

SAUGERTIES, NY (September 5, 2014) – Sarah Segal was looking forward to her debut in the Zoetis $1 Million Grand Prix, but is $9,000 more confident going into it now. With her appearance in the Triple Crown of Show Jumping’s final leg secure, the $30,000 SmartPak Wild Card Grand Prix win with Chartwell’s Ubris was the cherry atop her HITS Championship.

“It’s a big class Sunday, but good to win a grand prix when you have the opportunity, and I didn’t hold back,” said Segal, who topped an eight-horse jump-off with the 10-year-old Holsteiner mare. “She [Ubris] has a big stride and I felt good about our chances going into the ring.”

While most jump-off contenders were careful with Danny Foster’s [Milton, Ontario] track, Segal [New York, New York] was honest about taking risks. “She’s [Ubris] so honest and has a special talent for picking up fences on an angle,” Segal noted.

The duo returned fourth to face the short course and bumped Jonathan McCrea’s Great American Time to Beat of 54.30 seconds from contention. Her time of 49.91 seconds stood after four more rides. “We approached the skinny vertical halfway through the course and others were backing off for a direct approach. I didn’t have to,” said the 29-year-old, who trains with Olympic Gold Medalist Chris Kappler. “Having Chris on my team gives me confidence – he’s gone everywhere and done everything. He knows just when to be tough and when to be supportive.”

One of the four remaining in the Wild Card was Jill Henselwood [Oxford Mills, Ontario] and Quidam Blue– a new mount for the Canadian rider, owned by Equitop and Juniper Farms. The nine-year-old stallion carried her to a clear round in 52.14 seconds for the red ribbon. “He has been moving up and continues to jump brilliant rounds, so we are looking ahead at the Canadian Pan Am and Olympic teams,” said Henselwood.

A regular in the HITS $1 million classes, Henselwood will watch from the sidelines this year. “We’ve been getting good results and opportunities like this don’t come along all the time, but I’ve seen the jumps and my horse isn’t quite ready to step up yet,” she said. She won’t be missing all the action, however, and will coach fellow Canadian rider Elizabeth Gingras on S & L Elite for S & L Farms.

Julie Welles [Wellington, Florida] and Twan, owned by Stephex Stables and Missy Clark, took third with a clear time of 53.18 seconds, while McCrea [East Windsor, Connecticut] and Aristotles V settled in fourth for Candy Tribble & Windsor Show Stables. Laura Chapot [Neshanic Station, New Jersey] and Mary Chapot’s ISHD Dual Star rounded out the top five as the fastest of four-fault rides.

Segal maintains she had high hopes for Sunday before today’s win, but more than ready now. “The mare is new to this level but has to get her feet wet and if everything goes our way… we might just have a shot,” she said with a smile.

With coast-to-coast qualifying complete, the Zoetis Million will take the stage Sunday, September 7 at 2 pm and available worldwide via live webcast, presented in cooperation with HRTV, iEquine.com and A Good Show. Tune in at HRTV.com or iEquine.com.

Sarah Segal and Tilghman.

Wellington, FL – February 18, 2014 – Week seven is upon us, and the Ridge at Wellington’s Turf Tour is alive with jumper excitement as the leading rider standings are announced. For the past six weeks, professional, junior and amateur jumpers alike have enjoyed the classes at The Ridge at Wellington and the grass fields at venues across Wellington. For weeks, these riders have been competing not only for ribbons each week, but to be named as the Leading Rider in the series finale on Saturday, March 22 at Deeridge Farms. It is Sarah Segal who has ridden to the top of the standings.

This week the Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour will return to the illustrious Deeridge Farms facility for Week VII. This week’s events will take place this Wednesday, February 19, and Saturday, February 22, 2014. This event is one of the highlights of Wellington’s winter circuit with $4,000 up for grabs this Wednesday in the 1.30m-1.35m Jumpers, and qualifying points at stake in the Young Jumper Championship Division. This Saturday the $15,000 Wellington Turf Tour 1.40m Grand Prix will take center stage with an unprecedented amount of money at stake for Level II Jumpers.

Wednesday marks the third of five opportunities The Ridge at Wellington will offer this season for riders to compete in a Young Jumper Championship (YJC) qualifying classes for essential points. From 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. riders will have the opportunity to rack of points in the $500 5 Year Old Jumper YJC Qualifying Class. The $500 6 Year Old YJC Qualifying Class will run from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. The $500 7 and 8 Year Old YJC Qualifying Class will take place from 2 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Riders will have the chance to partake in a warm up round with an open card in order to prepare for the qualifying classes. It was Jeffery Welles and Antaris S that took the 1.40m Grand Prix victory at the International Polo Club Palm Beach for week six of the series, but Segal leads the ranks with the Leading Rider Bonus at stake. The Leading Rider of the Wellington Turf Tour Grand Prix Series will gain access to one of the most highly sought after, and beautiful clubs in the nation. The club was created by players for players, and was born out of the dream to build a facility to showcase the incredible skills of the ponies and players that dominate the sport. Sponsors and fans convene at The Winners Circle to congratulate the players during the awards presentation following the games. Gourmet brunches, après polo celebrations and the prerequisite charitable events will take place in the climate controlled Grand Marquee, the most sought-after Sunday brunch in town.

This Wednesday and Friday, Deeridge Farms will welcome attendees to the seventh of an 11-week series filled with top-tier competitors, horses and nearly $200,000 in prize money. Sarah Segal and Tilghman Ride to Victory at the Ridge at Wellington’s 1.40 Grand Prix

Wellington, FL – February 8, 2014 – McLain Ward and Dulien Van De Smeets returned to the Ridge at Wellington’s 1.40m Invitational Grand Prix to defend their turf, but they were met with a challenger as the fifth week of the series got underway. Sarah Segal and Tilghman rose to the test today, riding the jump off round with blazing speed. They rode to a double clear effort in 32.574 seconds, proving untouchable and taking the victory.

Roosje Brouwer took an early lead with Cisco’s Zidane as the sun rose over Wolfstone Stables. She guided the gelding around the Pierre Jolicouer designed course for a clear first round, then riding to the first of only four double clear rounds. Christine McCrea and Win For Life posted a conservative time of 38.703 seconds, but had one rail down. Karyn Foley and Falco also posted a four-fault round, but their time of 43.457 seconds proved too careful for a top three finish. It seemed as though Brouwer’s time would hold as the day continued; however, McLain Ward would soon challenge her time of 36.150 seconds.

Ward navigated the first round track with straightforwardness, riding new mount Dulien Van De Smeets to the top of the leader board with a jump off time of 34.031 seconds. Ward used a forward pace to move the mare through the turns, he negated an inside turn that left hope for competitors. His time was fast, but not entirely untouchable.

“It was a good course. I thought it was actually a little bit bigger than last week, but it was in a little easier ring, going in the sand. She went great out there and did great today,” Ward said. “We are going to keep moving her along, and hopefully jump her in some grand prix soon enough.”

McLain Ward and Dulien Van De Smeets

Ward continued, “It is nice to be able to compete for good prize money, not going up against 200 horses running around like maniacs. If you are trying to develop a horse in the 1.40m division, it is very hard at the Winter Equestrian Festival; you almost need a ringer in those classes now.”

Emmanuel Camilli took his turn at the track with Zacca Zoeloe, chasing Ward’s time. He was able to guide the bay gelding to a time of 33.617 seconds, but a rail fell at fence 7 to make him the fastest of the four-faulters. It wasn’t until Sarah Segal took the reins aboard Tilghman that defeat seemed plausible.

Segal posted a speedy first round course, and continued into the jump off. Using Tilghman quick foot speed, she covered the ground with seconds to spare, breaking the beam in 32.574 seconds. She was a full two seconds quicker than Ward’s leading time.

“I got him as a 6-year-old, and he is 10 now, so I have had him for a while. He won a bunch of these grand prix last year, and we came so close to winning the finale, but he had a rail down at the last fence of the jump off,” Segal explained. “He is a fantastic 1.40m horse. This is a niche for him. He can jump it really easily, and is really quick on his feet. Even if you go slow, he goes fast.”

Segal continued, “It is a little hard to get the context for if McLain would be able to hold the lead, but I tried to follow his track. My horse is just a little quicker. We made the inside turns, and although I added a stride to the last fence, my horse is so quick that I knew we had it. This is his game; he’s a great jumper and very quick in the air.”

Ben Meredith took the fourth place finish with Bernadien Van Westuur, jumping clear, but not quite fast enough with a time of 36.444 seconds. Ward finished in the second place position, while Brouwer completed the day with the third place award.

The stakes are increasing each week as top riders, amateur and professional, vie for their invitation to the $24,750 1.40m Invitational Grand Prix Series Finale on Saturday, March 22, 2014, as well as the coveted Leading Rider Bonus. The Wellington Turf Tour will return to the International Polo Club Palm Beach next week for its Wednesday and Friday events.

Meadowbrook Horse Transport will provide transportation to and from the horse show and other locations throughout Wellington for both the Wednesday and Friday events. The transportation is a nominal fee of $50 per horse, and will be calculated into the final show fees. This approaching week The Wellington Turf Tour will return to the International Polo Club Palm Beach. The Wednesday will return to the field with the 1.30m-1.35m Jumper divisions. The Grand Prix is set to happen this Friday, February 14, 2014. Riders are encouraged to get their entries in as soon as possible for the approaching classes. Turning in entries early will ensure that they get the time that they desire. Show Net will provide the live scoring for the Ridge Winter Tour II, as well as video all rounds. Kevin Babington and Sarah Segal Soar to Wellington Turf Tour Success at International Polo Club

Kevin Babington and Shorapur. Photos by: Kendall Bierer.

Wellington, FL – January 15, 2014 – Torrents of rain and claps of thunder welcomed riders to the fields of the International Polo Club Palm Beach (IPC) early this morning. However menacing, the inclement weather did not deter the field of 30 riders from entering into a heated battle in today’s 1.30-1.35m Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour.

Kevin Babington and Shorapur returned to the second week of competition with their sights set on victory, tackling the track to set the pace as the day’s pathfinder and eventual frontrunners. Sarah Segal and Zelda were the winners of the second class, completing the course in a speedy 34.739 seconds, proving untouchable.

It seemed as though Babington would take the win during last week’s commencement of the Ridge at Wellington’s Turf Tour, but Kama Godek narrowly pushed them from the pinnacle of the ranks, leaving him with the second place. Today, he guided Shorapur, owned by Shorapur LLC, through the Eric Hasbrouck designed track, leaving all rails in place and moving into the jump off. They kept a smooth even rhythm throughout the course, covering the ground with ease. The timers stopped at 37.557 seconds, leaving the other contenders to chase their blazing time.

“I wanted to work on getting her to carry herself, and really work on carrying a good rhythm. I wasn’t trying to set an unbeatable pace, but the jumps kept coming up on every turn. It worked really well,” Babington said. “She was good last week, but she was even better this week. She needs to stay relaxed out there. She is very careful and brave. Sometimes she can get ahead of herself, but today she kept her balance, and I was quite happy with that. I can’t wait to see how she does this Friday.”

Although Schuyler Riley and Andretti, owned by South Beach Stables, gave a valiant effort, their time of 38.935 seconds wasn’t enough to catch the Irishman today, earning the pair a red ribbon. Riley also snatched up the third place award with Dobra De Porceyo for their double-clear effort completed in 41.925 seconds. Ansgar Holtgers and Cocomello rode to the fourth place, while Babington cleared the course aboard his second mount Baloucat for the fifth. Brian Walker and Chico’s Bandita rounded out the top six.

“I was pretty excited about the venue today; the footing was fantastic,” Babington expressed. “It was such a great setting there [IPC]. Considering all the rain we had last night, I thought the footing held up extremely well. I was very, very pleased with my horse.”

Sarah Segal and Zelda
Sarah Segal and Zelda

Young talent Sarah Segal dominated the second class of the day, and as no stranger to the Ridge at Wellington events, she rode to the top with effortlessness aboard Zelda, owned by Lowell and Robi Kabnick. Although Segal was one of the riders to take on the course later in the day, her strategy proved well worth the wait. Zelda’s large stride and accuracy over the fences took the duo into the lead with a double clear round in a mere 34.739 seconds. It proved to be a time no one could come within a second of.

“She is actually a more recent horse. We have had her for a little over six months, and she is 10 years old. She is in some ways very experienced, because she consistently showed in 1.10-1.15m classes. Until we got her she hadn’t jumped any bigger than that,” Segal explained. “We started playing with her, and the bigger the jumps get, the better she jumps. She just started doing the 1.35m and 1.40m, and she has been doing it very easily. She is really competitive, really careful and a really, really game horse in the ring. She is always looking for the next jump. She is a really exciting horse.”

Mattias Tromp, the last rider of the day, had onlookers on the edge of their seats as he prepared to challenge Segal’s time. Cassius Von Nymphenburg, owned by Bayaert Farm Inc., responded easily to Tromp’s commands as they sliced turns and shaved seconds. It was Segal who still arose as the victor, with Tromp’s time of 35.509 seconds unable to better the pair.

Segal continued, “She has a huge stride, and she is very scopey. She is just incredibly honest and tries really hard. You know that you can spin her back and turn her, and she is always going to be there for you. I thought the course was really, really nice over there, and I was amazed by the footing. It was perfectly dry. I showed in the classes last year, and it is so nice to be able to go to different venues.”

Segal also picked up the third place award with veteran partner Tilghman, owned by Horatio St. Ventures, while Sarah Wayda and Spargel finished fourth. Gemma Paternoster and Figarro D, owned by Julia Harrison Lee, took the fifth place, and Schuyler Riley and Q-7, owned by Wolfstone Stables & Sales, rode to the sixth place.

The course opened at 8 a.m. and remained open until 4:30 p.m., allowing competitors ample time to come at their convenience to ride and enjoy the ambiance of IPC. The $175,000 1.40m Invitational Grand Prix event will return to IPC this Friday for the $15,000 1.40m Ridge at Wellington Invitational Grand Prix. The 10-week series will culminate with the $24,750 Wellington Turf Tour Invitational Grand Prix Finale on Saturday, March 22, 2014.

“It seemed like such a great idea to open our field to show jumping. I felt that we have the land; we have the access, and we want to do anything to help the equestrian industry. We are a polo club, but we want to be able to support all of the disciplines,” IPC President of Club Operations John Wash described. “After seeing this, I would like to expand this, and hopefully help to grow this in the future.”

Show Net captured all of today’s action at the International Polo Club Palm Beach, while also providing live scoring for the Ridge Winter Tour II. All recorded rounds and results are available at: www.shownet.biz.

Meadowbrook Horse Transport will provide transportation to and from the horse show and other locations throughout Wellington for both the Wednesday and Friday events.
