Mill Spring, NC – June 18, 2019 – Sarah Bagworth (Toronto, ON) and her own Malou were victorious in Sunday’s $25,000 Cleghorn Golf & Sports Club Grand Prix to conclude week one of the Tryon Summer Series at Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC), finishing with a jump-off time of 38.135 seconds. Ricardo Villa (Campobello, SC) and Walnut, a 2010 mare (Costello x Potomac) owned by Juan Pablo Betancourt, claimed second place with a short course time of 38.373 seconds. Darragh Kerins (Wellington, FL) piloted Trefoil Farm LLC’s Delight M-G C de Leuze, a 2009 Belgian Warmblood mare (Armitage x Unknown), to a swift 39.068-second round for third.

The course, designed by Bobby Murphy (Lexington, KY) tested 24 pairs in the first round, with seven returning for the jump-off. “The course was great. I think it was really fair for the group… it was a tough group today,” Bagworth remarked. “I was actually a little nervous when I walked in. I have been a little rusty in my riding so far this summer, so I am happily surprised!”

Malou, a 2004 Swedish Warmblood mare (Maloubet de Pleville X Carthago), is not new to the jumper ring. “She [Malou] is amazing; ‘professional’ would be my best one word to describe her,” Bagworth explained. “She has only ever been ridden well before me. She was ridden by McLain Ward, his wife Lauren, and before that Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum. She has had the best education possible.”

Bagworth has owned Malou since November of 2017. “She [Malou] has just been amazing for me, she always goes in the ring and tries extremely hard. She is extremely fair when I make a mistake, and she is very fast,” Bagworth shared.

The pair hopes to continue to have successful rounds at TIEC. “We made Tryon a bit of a summer base. We really enjoy the show and it is good to us. We love the area, too. It is really fun to hang out on your days off, and the horses are happy jumping here,” Bagworth concluded.

Sarah Bagworth and Apple Win High Junior/Amateur Jumpers

Sarah Bagworth and Apple soared to the top of the class.

Lexington, KY – August 16, 2014 – Apple earned her namesake treat this morning with a win in the Rolex Stadium for the High Junior/Amateur Jumpers. While none of the 9 horse and rider pairs were able to jump the challenging course clear, Sarah Bagworth aboard her horse Apple, had the fastest four-fault round to take first place.

The Belgian Warmblood mare traveled around the course with speed and efficiency, knocking only one rail, a result good enough to claim the blue ribbon. Bagworth, of King City, Ontario, credits Apple with the win.

“She’s a super cool horse, very fast and careful and very brave,” said Bagworth. “I can go into the ring and not really have to think about anything because she always tries 110 percent. I just have to try my best to match her.”

Bagworth bought Apple this past year at the Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) and has since been developing her relationship with the mare and trying small grand prix classes. She hopes to compete in the Artisan Farms Young Rider Grand Prix Series next year at WEF.

Today’s course tripped up many horse and rider pairs, which surprised Bagworth as she expected someone to jump clear.

“I thought it was a really nice course,” she noted. “It was really fun, open with nice turns and nothing too crazy. I really like that the jumps are a little bit different this week because of the hunters; it’s especially fun with a horse that doesn’t spook or mind it.”

After her winning round, Apple is sure to be showered with her namesake treat.

“It’s a great name; it really suits her. She loves apples and her candies; she’s a bit of a piggy,” said Bagworth as Apple tried to nibble on the audio recorder.

Close behind Bagworth, also with one rail down, was Spencer Brittan on Clapton, a Warmblood gelding owned by Sweet Oak Farm. Brittan competed last night in the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic and went up against some big names to claim third place. His run this morning grabbed him a second place finish. Bagworth and Brittan both had one rail down. Louise Graves on Zavira grabbed third with one rail down and two time faults.

Show jumping competition continues this week at the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show, culminating in Sunday night’s $40,000 Bluegrass Festival Grand Prix.
