No Jump-Off, No Problem for Salvador Onate in Leon

Salvador Onate (MEX) did what no one else could in the Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Leon (MEX). He secured a victory aboard Beautiful Red with a single time fault, as no other rider could leave all of the jumps up over Anderson Lima’s (BRA) challenging track.

No jump-off was needed to determine a winner. Onate and his mount finished on a first-round score of 1 and a time of 83.88 seconds, less than a second over the 83-second time allowed. Arturo Parada Vallejo (MEX) was the fastest rider on the day, finishing second with 4 faults in 78.72 seconds. Juan Jose Zendejas Salgado (MEX) finished third with Just Nice van het Indihoff; that duo also had a 4-fault score, but their time was slightly slower (79.40 seconds).

“There were some pretty amazing riders [behind me], and I thought there would be at least one clear,” he added. “It all worked out in the end.”

Onate had nothing but praise for his mount, who has stepped up while his top horse Big Red is en route to Europe to make a bid for the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo (JPN).

“She just rose to the challenge,” he explained. “It was a pretty tough course — very technical. She just jumped her heart out. She did amazing.”

The win held special meaning for Onate, as he both owns and resides on the Leon venue property. A year ago, Onate finished second with Big Red in the same event.

“It’s amazing,” he said. “To win a World Cup anywhere, let alone in my hometown — it’s just amazing. I can’t explain how much it means.”

The 2019/2020 North American League hosts its final qualifying event on the east coast in Ocala (USA) on 8 March 2020.

Salvador Onate Races to Win $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic

Lexington, Ky. – July 25, 2019 – As the sun set on the Rolex Stadium, spectators were treated to an entertaining evening of competition with 29 entries battling it out in the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic. The 1.50m course designed by Brazil’s Marina Azevedo proved to be tricky for many horse-and-rider combinations, consisting of a total of 15 obstacles in the first round. A myriad of jumps came down around the course and with a time-allowed of 84 seconds, only nine pairs moved onto the jump-off. Ultimately, it was Salvador Onate and Big Red who flew to the fastest clean round to capture Thursday’s feature victory, while Shane Sweetnam finished in second place and Lacey Gilbertson rounded out the top three.

Goguen, Payne, and Farmer Tie for Grand Hunter Champion

The professional hunter divisions came to a close Thursday during the Kentucky Horse Show. It was a day of blues as three horse and rider combination swept their classes, winning every over fences class in their respective divisions, garnering a three-way tie for Grand Hunter Championship, presented by Visse Wedell. In the Green 3’6″ Hunter division, Gossi, owned by Garland Alban and ridden by Tim Goguen, won every class to earn the championship ribbon. In the Green 3’9″ Hunter division, Chris Payne and Fibonacci, owned by Still Water Farm LLC, dominated their division for the championship. To round out the three-way tie, Kelley Farmer piloted David Glefke’s Witness to five straight wins and the championship. All three combinations earned a total of 50 points.

Onate and Big Red Break Through in Guadalajara for First Longines Victory

Salvador Onate (MEX) had a few anxious moments, but luck was on his side when he rode Big Red to victory in the $1,900,000 (~$100,000 U.S.) Longines FEI Jumping World Cup™ Guadalajara (MEX) on Saturday.

Onate, the first to keep all of the jumps up over Guilherme Jorge’s (BRA) challenging first round track, originally picked up a single time fault, crossing the timers in 79.60 seconds — six-tenths of a second over the original 79-second time allowed. However, the time was eventually adjusted to 81 seconds, securing Onate’s place in the jump-off.

Jumping first over the shortened track, Onate picked up a rail, but his 42.66-second time held again. With no double-clear performances, he came away with the win over Spain’s Paola Amilibia and VIP (4/46.49 seconds). Simon Nizri (ISR) and D Amour from Second Life Z finished third (4/47.71), with Andres Torres Hernandez (MEX) and Chabacon (8/51.89) taking fourth as the only other pair to qualify for the jump-off.

“I knew there weren’t going to be many clear rounds, and when I had the time fault, I felt very bad for myself — because it’s a rider’s fault, not the horse,” Onate said. “Then, they switched the time, and I got into the jump-off. I was lucky today, all the way.”

The victory marked Onate and Big Red’s first in World Cup competition. The rider credited his quick reaction to pick up the pace in the jump-off as his key to victory.

“It’s kind of a disadvantage to be the first one to go in [in the jump-off],” he said. “I just wanted to go as fast as I could. I knew there were fast riders. As soon as I had one rail, I knew that I had to go very fast. That’s what I did, and it worked.”
