Longines FEI World Cup Qualifier Drama Highlights Day Nine at Royal West

October 30, 2015, Calgary, Alberta: It was a special night in Calgary on Saturday as the inaugural $132,000 Longines FEI World Cup™ Jumping Calgary 1.60 m took to the floor of the Agrium Western Centre. The long-awaited event – one of four World Cup qualifiers in Canada this year – lived up to the hype as only three riders went clear on Werner Deeg’s challenging course in Round One.

The prestigious title – and the precious World Cup qualifying points – came down to a jump-off among Canada’s Jill Henselwood aboard the 10-year-old bay gelding Farfelu du Printemps; Samuel Parot of Chile riding Atlantis, a bay 12-year-old gelding; and Canada’s Yann Candele on Granit S, a bay 10-year-old gelding.

In a tension-filled showdown, it was Parot, the man who “doesn’t know the meaning of the words ‘going slow’,” who emerged with his second North American League triumph of the 2015 campaign. In typical bold style, Parot and Atlantis found the speed in the course with a clean round in 39.23. The win boosted him to top spot in the East Coast standings with 40 points.

“With this win in the North American League, I believe I’m in very good position now for the Worlds,” Parot told the press afterward. “The North American League is harder than the South American League, and so I think I will be better prepared.

“Atlantis was calm in the first round, but he got a little more excited in the jump-off. But he’s a good horse.”

In second was the remarkable Candele, who rode Granit S as a catch ride, completing an unlikely story with a second-place finish in 41.58 seconds. “John has been trying to bring me here to ride for a long while,” Candele said afterward. “Our schedules worked out this time. We had a chance to ride on the flats early this week. It’s the sign of a fantastic horse that he put his heart out and accepted my riding tonight.”

Third was the former Olympian, Henselwood, who’s had a consistent Royal West meet with multiple trips to the podium. Her excellent showing came after a late switch to Farfelu from her usual mount. “This is supposed to be a horse for a 19-year-old Canadian who is in engineering at Queens University with a full course load. So I had Farfelu. That tuned out to be great planning.”

John Anderson, the host at Royal West, who came fifth, was satisfied at having such a great event in his hometown. “I was ecstatic that it all came together after some tough months for my family with the death of my father J. C. This event helped me get through that. This shows we can pull this off in Calgary. I hope to have the Longines event back here many times in the future.”

Added Henselwood, “What a great thing that John’s done to bring this event to Calgary. It really boosts out ability nationally to come up the rankings for the World Cup.”

Lisa Carlsen of Calgary was top local rider aboard Worlds Judgement. “The course was very technical, very fast and some of the jumps came up very quickly. Werner did a great job of setting a challenging test.”

Points won on Saturday count toward the final of the Longines FEI World Cup™ final to be held in Gothenburg, Sweden next year.

Earlier in the day, Elizabeth Gingras nabbed the $7,500 Hotel Arts Open Jumper 1.30 m aboard her Floreen SFN. In second was Brian Morton on Cartoon. Third-place honours were won by Vanessa Mannix on Dooley’s Deluxe.

October 28, 2015, Calgary, Alberta: The pulse has quickened at the Royal West in Week Two as the big names began gearing up for the weekend’s big prizes. On Wednesday Canada’s Erynn Ballard sharpened her game in the $45,000 GGT Footing/Whittling Structures Classic 1.45 m with a dramatic win in an all-Canadian 11-horse jump-off.

In what was an all-female winning podium, Ballard rode her chestnut 10-year-old gelding Appy Cara to a clear round that beat out Ali Ramsay on the bay 8-year-old mare Hermelien vd Hooghoeve by 1.82 seconds, also with a clear round. Third place in the tightly bunched field went to Vanessa Mannix on the bay 14-year-old gelding Nirvanan de Terlong) who rode clean as well.

Other riders making the jump-off were Laura Jane Tidball (Prim’ de Lairaud), John Anderson (Terrific), Jill Henselwood (Farfelu du Printemps), Keean White (For Freedom Z, Carrera van de het Westleven Z), Ben Asselin (Plume de la Roque), Chris Sorenson (Bobby), and Yann Candele (Granit S).

All the Pretty Horses Fly on Day Two of Royal West International Championship

Keean White and Carrera Van Het Westleven Z.

October 23, 2015, Calgary, Alberta: Day Two of the 2015 Royal West tournament delivered a second consecutive day of exhilarating competition, this time of a different nature. Capped by a nail-biting jump-off in the $35,000 Synoil Royal West International Championship, PHASE 2, 1.45 m, Keean White took the top spot after his first ride of the jump-off proved too fast for any of the competitors to catch.

On opening night during Phase 1, Samuel Parot took the three top spots in a clean sweep. It would take something special to equal that. Then eight mounts — ridden by seven Canadians — rode their way into a tense jump-off that came down to the final ride to determine the top three of PHASE 2.

White’s first ride in the jump-off, a blazing ride of 38.32 seconds a bay mare Carrera Van Het Westleven Z, set a pace the rest of the competitors tried and failed to catch. White attributed his lucky charm to an unconventional source: trash talk. “I know after I ran my last horse, Ali asked me how many strides I did the last jump, so I told her nine so she would think eight is forward. But I actually did eight so she could have done seven to beat me.”

The second spot came down to the wire as the final rider, Ali Ramsay, bumped Laura Jane Tidball from the second spot and denied her two spots in the top three. Ramsay’s ride aboard eight-year-old Belgian bay Hermelien vd Hooghoeve of 38.83 seconds gave the crowd a thrilling finish. “When I’m going for it, I’m always going for the win,” said Tidball. When asked how it felt to give the crowd an exciting ending, she quipped at White’s expense, “Yea… but I was hoping to be first. Especially with all the trash talk.”

With shades of Parot’s performance the previous evening, Laura Jane Tidball nearly took both the second and third spots, but placed third aboard Liam with 39.82 second run. She also took fourth aboard Prim’ De Lairaud with 40.95 seconds.

The lone international rider in the jump-off, Ireland’s James Chawke, took fifth aboard Triskel De Kerliven with a ride of 42.58 seconds.

In a nail-biter, Jill Henselwood took the fastest ride of the jump-off at 38.31 seconds — .01 seconds quicker than White — aboard Quidam Blue; however, a fault bumped her out of the top spot and into fifth.

Bringing up the rest of the field in the jump-off were, in order, White on Sombrero Brimbelles, Canadian Erynn Ballard on Hera van de Kouterhoeve, and John Anderson on Granit S.

When asked about the representation in the jump-off by Canadians, Rocky Mountain Show Jumping President and fellow competitor, Anderson, said, “It’s always good to help your fellow Canadian rider. Hosting international events like this allows riders to earn world-ranking points. I’m happy to have the jump-off dominated by the Canucks.”

Despite a dominating performance the evening before, Parot was unable to move into a top spot on either of his two rides, Tailormade Anna Chacca and Cous Cous Van Orti, and placed tenth.

Earlier in the day, the $2,300 Jump Alberta Royal West Championship PHASE 2, 1.20 m was won by Beda Wachter on WH Campari with a time of 33.35 seconds, followed by Bailey Ritchie Harding on Vienna T. at 33.39 seconds, and in third Chelsea Walsh on Mercury at 33.95 seconds.

The $1,600 Jump Alberta Royal West Championship PHASE 2, 1.15 m was won by Jada Wagner on Bail From Cali in a time of 33.43 seconds; Jill Henselwood on Crackin took second at 33.46 seconds, followed by Laurel Chad on Quenza Du Soutrait came third at 34.98.

The $1,300 Jump Alberta Royal West Championship PHASE 2, 1.10 m was won by Megan Schlosser on Cassina St. Kriru Z at 27.05 seconds; Lynne Stephenson came second on Camona 3 at 29.46 seconds, with Hannah Maley on Papya at 30.68 seconds.
