Alpharetta, GA – ACORD (American Competition Opportunities for Riders with Disabilities, Inc), a national 501c3 nonprofit corporation, is kicking off their first fundraiser for the Memories of Marj Scholarship & Grant Fund on Saturday, September 10, 2011. This fund will provide educational opportunities across the country for athletes with disabilities.

The “Miracles on Manes” benefit for Memories of Marj will be held at Chukkar Farm in Alpharetta, GA, beginning at 5 p.m. The event will feature music, refreshments, a silent auction, prize drawings and a thrilling round of equestrian entertainment. Guests of honor are riders from the Caisson Platoon Program in Washington, D.C. Tickets are $40; a table for ten may be reserved for $350. Beverages and heavy appetizers will be served, with entertainment from many equestrian disciplines, including: polo, dressage pairs to music, sidesaddle, show jumping, eventing, grand prix dressage and riders with disabilities. Drawing and silent auction items are extensive, including a hot air balloon champagne ride, luxury beach weekend and a flightseeing trip over Atlanta.

The evening will conclude with the awarding of the first two grants from the Memories of Marj Scholarship & Grant Fund, followed by a special champagne toast to Marjorie V. Kittredge and ACORD’s first Memories of Marj Beneficiaries.

ACORD is organizing this scholarship and grant fund in memory of Marjorie (Marj) V. Kittredge, a Boston native who dedicated her life to equestrians with disabilities as an instructor, mentor, clinician, judge and organizer. Marj was one of ACORD’s original founders in 1992 and the first American international technical delegate. She died on June 23, 2010 at the age of 86. With Marj’s help, ACORD made a difference for people and horses.

Thousand Oaks, CA – September 2, 2010 – This spring Para-Equestrians were treated to a dressage clinic with Olympian Debbie McDonald. The clinic took place during the Dressage Affaire at the Del Mar Horse Park in Del Mar, California on March 15-16, 2010.  This informational clinic was a wonderful opportunity for riders that are preparing for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. For McDonald this clinic proved to be a learning experience not only for the participants but for herself as well.

McDonald noted, “This clinic was a learning experience not only for them but for me.  I have never had a rider that was paralyzed from the neck down.  At first I was not sure exactly on how to work on each of the riders but I developed a strategy to work on controlling the body.  These exercises included sitting up taller, increase stretching, and many other techniques to increase their strength.  I worked with the para-equestrians just as I would school my own riders.”

Thousand Oaks, CA – June 21, 2010 – The United States Para-Equestrian Association would like to announce their qualified riders for the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG) Selection Trials scheduled for June 24-27, 2010.  The amount of Para-Dressage participants has tripled in one year, which means more Para-Equestrians are challenging themselves to international competition.  The riders making their way to Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois for the Para-Dressage Selection Trials include equestrians that, despite their disabilities, have overcome and adapted to showcase their athletic abilities.

Fifteen United States Para-Equestrians have scores that will allow them to compete at the Selection Trials.  Out of those 15, ten of the riders will be selected for WEG.  Out of the ten riders, four will make the team, and six will ride as individuals.

Thousands Oaks, CA – June 7, 2010 – The United States Para-Equestrian Association (USPEA) would like to announce that it is now a 501(c)(3) public charitable organization.  The USPEA provides programs, clinics, and competition opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities.  Riders compete under the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) rules during their competitions and many of the athletes compete at the highest level of their sport. Becoming a 501(c)(3) was a momentous occasion for the USPEA. This status will encourage donors, supporters, and equestrian enthusiasts to supply funding for the United States Para-Equestrians.

The show season of 2010 is going to be exciting for the USPEA as it will be the first year that the Para-Dressage discipline will compete on the world stage at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Lexington, KY.  As the number of Para-Equestrian participants expands and more of the public becomes aware of this unique equestrian discipline, the Para-Equestrians will continue to need more support.  The USPEA would like to see this type of benefaction continue through the World Games, the 2012 London Olympics, and beyond.
