Kelley Farmer and It’s Me Claim Grand Hunter Championship on Day Two of the Kentucky Spring Horse Show

Lexington, Ky. – May 12, 2016 – The 2016 Hagyard Challenge series, sponsored by the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, kicked off its eleventh year at the Kentucky Horse Shows on Thursday evening with the $35,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic. Sixty-six horse and rider combinations went head-to-head in the CSI3* competition, but it was Pablo Barrios (VEN) who took the victory with ASD Farfala. The talented pair beat out of a field of 14 during the jump-off, tripping the timers in a speedy 37.940 seconds.

Riders battled the elements during Thursday’s class, but the rain did not faze ASD Farfala, owned by Barrios, who has only been riding the 12-year-old Warmblood mare for a month. The Kentucky Spring Series marks their first horse show together, but the two are already demonstrating a winning partnership.

“I’ve known the mare for a long time,” said Barrios. “It belongs to a very good friend of mine, Americo Simonetti. He is a legend in the sport in South America from Chile and he kindly let me ride this wonderful mare that I’ve known for a long time.

“The mare came to the Winter Equestrian Festival with a rider from Chile and when she was about to go back to Chile I called him and asked if they could leave her with me,” continued Barrios. “I love the mare and I think I can do a great job with her. It’s amazing, when you have a good horse, how easy it is to go clean and fast. This is my first horse show with her. I was concerned about whether to put her in a lower class, but she’s so smart and talented I thought, ‘Why hold her back?’ So I went straight to it. When I call [Americo] again he is going to be very happy!”

Aaron Vale (USA) and Quidam’s Good Luck, owned by Troy Glaus, were the early pathfinders as well as the fastest pair to navigate the technical first round track, designed by Bernardo Costa Cabral, finishing in a fault-free effort of 74.100 seconds. The two later returned to the jump-off finishing double clear in 38.210 seconds, just one second behind Barrios claiming second place honors.

“Quidam’s Good Luck is a fast horse,” said Vale. “It was a nice galloping track with smooth, sweeping turns, which really suits him. We just took a shot. He feels like he’s going well and he likes this ring, so we took a shot. We had a really quick round. I just couldn’t leave one out to the last on him. We put in a great round and Pablo just beat me by fractions, so can’t complain too much!”

Vale also finished double clear again placing third with his second mount of the evening, Finou 4, owned by Thinkslikeahorse, in 39.540 seconds.

“I saw Aaron and I knew he was very fast,” said Barrios. “I knew he had a horse behind me and I really tried. I saw him doing seven strides one to two. My plan was to do six or seven with her and I made it and I think any other horse would have had fence 15 down but she just left it up because she is amazing. I’m so excited with this mare and I’m thankful to get to ride her.

“The winners always say that the course is really good, but we were talking before the class with all of the riders and I mentioned that every single class has been very well designed so far,” said Barrios. “I think this is one of the difficult classes to build. He had a great jump-off, a great class and I was very excited. Not because I won but because I like it, and it’s always very nice to beat Aaron because he is very fast!”

Barrios is no stranger to the winner’s circle at the Kentucky Horse Shows. He won the Hagyard Challenge series back to back in 2013 and 2014 and is already off to a strong start in the 2016 series.

“I have a good vibe here; I feel like this is home,” said Barrios.

“Every time you come they have done something new” said Vale. “The rings are great, they always get top-notch course designers and they have a great set of jumps. It’s a top quality product and it’s great to be here. I showed here for the first time in 1988. Jumpers back then were on the grass where the Claiborne Ring is now!”

Barrios is also set to compete on the Venezuelan team at the Rio Olympic Games this summer with Antares, his 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding.

“I’m going with Antares,” said Barrios. “I’m showing him very lightly. He showed three times at WEF. I used him a lot last year because my mare got hurt. I’m starting to use him a little bit more and working on the fitness when I run him so he gets a little cardio. This is the time to do it before the Games.  Then, I’ll keep him a little fresh for the Games; that’s the plan.

“I want to thank Devoucoux, Purina and MDC Stirrups – without those stirrups it’s very hard to ride in the rain so that’s very awesome that I was wearing them tonight. Also Animo, my new sponsor of boots, Parlanti and Choice of Champions.”

The Hagyard Challenge series consists of seven grand prix classes to be held during the 2016 show series at the Kentucky Horse Park. Following the final event, a cash prize of $50,000 will be awarded to the rider accumulating the most points throughout the series as well as a $10,000 prize for the reserve champion.

“Anything that gives us a chance to make a little extra money you have to appreciate,” said Vale. “They have been great supporters for 11 years. It sure is a nice thing for us to have a chance to get a rider bonus at the end of the year. It’s good for the horse show, good for Hagyard and good for the riders.”

Throughout the summer, the top riders from across the nation will gather to compete over challenging courses and vie for the winning title and valuable points toward the $50,000 Leading Rider Bonus. The Kentucky Spring Classic, May 18-22, will host the second $35,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic CSI3* on Thursday, May 19. Four more Hagyard Lexington Classic grand prix events will be held during the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, the Kentucky Summer Classic, the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show and the KHJA Horse Show. The series concludes with the $65,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic during the Kentucky National Horse Show. Following that exciting competition, the winner of the $50,000 Leading Rider Bonus will be announced and presented with the cash prize by the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute.

New this year to the Hagyard Challenge series is the $200 Best Turned Out award, sponsored by Bob Mickler’s. The award goes to a well-deserving groom following each grand prix. Following Thursday’s competition Andre Luis, groom to Mark Bluman and Uitteraard of Stransky’s Mission Farms, won the first Best Turned Out award of the series.

Kelley Farmer and It’s Me Claim Grand Hunter Championship on Day Two of the Kentucky Spring Horse Show

Kelley Farmer and It’s Me had another banner day in the Stonlea Ring at the Kentucky Spring Horse Show Thursday claiming the Hunter Grand Championship sponsored by Visse Wedell at Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

Farmer swept the over fences classes in the Green Conformation Hunters with the 8-year-old Warmblood stallion It’s Me, scoring the division championship and going on to claim the Grand Hunter Championship.

Wedell has been a great supporter of the Kentucky Horse Shows sponsoring grand championship prizes in multiple divisions. “I love that a stallion won,” Wedell said. “Kelley actually rode a horse of mine a long time ago for me so I’m thrilled that they were able to be Grand Hunter Champion at the first horse show here in beautiful Kentucky.

“I love this facility so much,” added Wedell, who recently purchased a property nearby. “It’s such a pleasure to be here I’ve officially decided to based myself here for the season, so I’ve invested myself personally in the area because I love it here so much.”

Farmer was thrilled with her win today as It’s Me is a special horse for her. “He belongs to Sue [Pinney] and my mom [Bibby Hill] and I,” Farmer explained. “The last one my mom owned was Scripted. It is really special for mom to own a part of him with us.”

Farmer was full of praise for the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows. “I love this horse show,” She said. “They do such a nice job, the jumps are beautiful, the footing is beautiful, the horses go perfectly and this is home for us now.”

It’s Me is clearly a fan of the show as well. “He’s been fantastic from the first day he’s been here,” noted Farmer. “He tries hard. He finds ways to win and he tries to win blue ribbons. He’s a great horse. I’m excited for Devon!”

Scott Stewart scored a hat trick today winning championships in three divisions. He won the Regular Conformation Hunter Championship aboard First Light, the Second Year Green Championship on Catch Me, and finished out the day winning the High Performance Hunter Championship with A Million Reasons, also bringing home the Reserve Championship with Cameo.

“We always come here because we stay in Florida and this is sort of on the way home,” Stewart explained.  “We take a little break after showing and this is our first time back. It’s always a nice place to come to get ready for Devon. Florida is great, but there’s so much going on. When they get here they get to be turned out and relax more. A lot of the young horses really mature and when they come here, they just relax.”

Catch Me clearly benefitted from this stop on the way home from Florida. “Catch Me is awesome,” Scott said.  “He hasn’t shown since the night class in Florida. He was good there so we stopped showing. He had a month of just hacking and then I jumped some little jumps with him after that, so this was his first time back and it was great!”

Friday will see the Amateur Owner Hunters taking over in the Stonelea Ring. Sunday is “Derby Day” with the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby and the $5,000 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby taking place.

FEI Tribunal Decision on Pablo Barrios Case

Lausanne (SUI), 26 October 2015 – The FEI Tribunal has issued its Final Decision in the case involving Jumping athlete Pablo Barrios (VEN).

Barrios was selected for in-competition testing at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Veracruz (MEX) on 29 November 2014.

Analysis of the urine sample at a World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)-accredited laboratory revealed the presence of Hydrochlorothiazide, a diuretic, which is a Prohibited Substance under WADA’s 2014 Prohibited List.

Barrios has been reprimanded, fined 1,500 CHF and will bear the legal costs of the judicial procedure.

The Central American and Caribbean Sports Organisation (ODECABE – Organización Deportiva Centroamericana y del Caribe) has already disqualified Barrios’ results at this event.

Heather Caristo-Williams and Pablo Barrios Tie for First in $34,000 FEI HITS Jumper Classic

(C) ESI Photography. Heather Caristo-Williams and Evening Star.

SAUGERTIES, NY (September 5, 2015): Internationally ranked competition continued at HITS Saugerties Friday with the $34,000 FEI HITS Jumper Classic, the only qualifying class of the week for Sunday’s Canadian Pacific $1 Million Grand Prix FEI CSI-5*. Spectators were on the edge of their seats down to the end when Pablo Barrios of Wellington, Florida, and his own Antares, and Saugerties’ own Heather Caristo-Williams and Evening Star, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Caristo, tied for the top spot.

A field of 71 attempted the round one course set by Steve Stephens of Palmetto, Florida, with 23 going clean within the 80 second time allowed. Seventeen would opt to return for the jump off which proved to be a test for even the most seasoned riders.

The first three in the order had four faults, followed by 13 faults for the fourth entry. That was until Conor Swail, of County Down, Ireland, aboard CITA, owned by Susan and Ariel Grange, swooped in to give fans the first clear in a time of 40.040.

“My horse is a new mare to me; this is only my second show with her, so I was very pleased with her,” said Swail. “I thought the track was tough today, first round included. It’s the first time I’ve ridden a jump-off with her. She probably didn’t know what hit her when I landed and started kicking after fence 1. She was great.”

Fifth in the order, Caristo followed in Swail’s footsteps and sailed to a quick, clean round clocking in at 39.90 for the lead.

“I thought the track was fun,” said Caristo after class. “I had a great time and my horse jumped really well.”

Next in the order, and the next to go clear, Christine McCrea rode Candy Tribble & Windsor Show Stables Inc.’s Win for Life to a time of 43.670 to place her just behind Swail. Katie Dinan, tenth in the order, was clean with Amaretto D’arco, owned by Grant Road Partners LLC in a time of 43.830.

A known speedster, Barrios reentered the ring twelfth and it was no surprise that he was ready to race the clock. With a clear course behind him, his time of 39.90 secured a tie for first with Caristo, bumping Swail to third, McCrea to fourth and Dinan to fifth.

“For my horse, this ring fits him very well,” said Barrios. “He’s a big horse with a big stride. I just did what I saw other people doing. He’s fast in this type of thing.”

“To be honest, I wanted to be in the top three. I wasn’t expecting the best time with Heather. I’m hoping to sit here on Sunday too,” added Barrios who has his eyes set on the CP Million.

Swail agreed. “It’s nice to get into the ribbons early on in the week. And hopefully we can continue the same in the Million.”

Friday wasn’t just a day of competition at HITS; it was a day of horse sport education for 600 Saugerties School Children, grades 4 through 8. McLain Ward showed off his recent Pan American Games Gold Medal as he commentated on the Jumper Classic competition happening in front of them. HITS President and CEO Tom Struzzieri also explained the significance of the FEI CSI-5* week happening right in their own community while the students enjoyed a complimentary ringside lunch courtesy of HITS.

FEI competition continues Saturday with the $100,000 FEI Hudson Valley Jumper Classic and Sunday for the CP $1 Million Grand Prix FEI CSI-5*, presented by Wells Fargo. Both classes will be available via live webcast at HitsShows.com.

Barrios and McArdle Speed to Wins on Opening Day of Spruce Meadows ‘Pan American’

Calgary, AB, Canada – July 9, 2015 – The 2015 Spruce Meadows Summer Series began its final week of competition, the ‘Pan American’ Tournament CSI 5*, presented by Rolex, with wins for Pablo Barrios (VEN) and Abigail McArdle (USA) on Thursday. The ‘Pan American’ Tournament continues with world-class show jumping through Sunday, July 12.

Pablo Barrios led the victory gallop in the $34,000 Friends of the Meadows Cup 1.50m riding Emanuel Andrade’s Fananka A in the Meadows on the Green. Out of 48 entries, 13 cleared Guilherme Jorge’s (BRA) speed track, and Barrios and Fananka A blazed the winning time of 56.73 seconds. Hardin Towell (USA) and Jennifer Gates’ Lucifer V finished second in 56.91 seconds, and Rodrigo Lambre (BRA) placed third aboard Mario Onate’s Charielle, with a time of 58.09 seconds.

Barrios has had great results throughout the summer at Spruce Meadows, but this was his first international win of the series. Fananka A, a ten-year-old Belgian Warmblood mare (Chin Chin x Kannan), is a new mount for the rider this summer and he explained that Thursday’s course suited the horse perfectly.

“I am happy that I finally got one victory,” Barrios stated. “I never expected to have it with her because she is just a new ride for me. Emanuel let me ride her because I was a little short on FEI horses. Basically, we trained her to do the derbies. I was a little unlucky in both derby competitions, but she placed in both.”

“Finally, this course was perfect for her,” Barrios continued. “When I walked the course I really liked it for her. It was long lines for a big horse and she has a big step. Two of the tightest turns were to her good side on her left lead. Everything was perfect for her, so I went for it to see if I could win and I was lucky.”

“She has a very different style,” Barrios said of Fananka. “The quality is top; I have never ridden a horse with that much quality, but the rideability is a little tough. You have to place her in a distance that she feels comfortable. Normally, she gets deeper than what you want or she will put herself in a place that you think she is in trouble, but she is so careful and she tries so hard. I do not know how, but she leaves the rails up.”

Further detailing his round, Barrios explained, “I was fast in the rollback from number three to the plank. Then I was the only one in the competition who did seven strides to the combination. She has a huge step and she goes a little left, so I planned the seven and it worked perfect. I think I was very quick there; everybody was doing nine or eight strides. Then I was fast in the rollback after the liverpool. Again, she goes left and she turned great, so I made good time there.”

Barrios hopes to continue riding Fananka and thanked the Andrade Family for letting him compete the mare this summer. He also thanked sponsors: Animo, Hagyard Equine Clinic, Devoucoux, Purina, Choice of Champions, Healthy Coat, and Der Dau.

On Friday, Barrios plans to compete ZL Group, Inc.’s Zara Leandra in the $85,000 Ashcor Technologies Cup 1.55m. The mare has been competing very well and he hopes to jump her in Sunday’s $400,000 Pan American Cup, presented by Rolex, to conclude the Summer Series.

McArdle Opens with a Win

International competition at the ‘Pan American’ Tournament got underway in the North American Ring Thursday morning with a win for Abigail McArdle (USA) and David McArdle’s Cosma 20 in the $34,000 Friends of the Meadows Cup 1.45m. Held over a one round speed track set by Anthony D’Ambrosio (USA), the competition saw 50 competitors with 14 clear rounds. McArdle and Cosma 20 clocked in at 65.90 seconds for the win.

Hardin Towell and Jennifer Gates’ New York placed second in 68.46 seconds, and Kent Farrington (USA) finished third with a time of 68.76 seconds aboard Haity McNerney and Amalaya Investments’ Cha Cha Cha 7.

McArdle and Cosma 20 have been a winning team for several years, and the 12-year-old Hanoverian mare (Couleur Rubin x Stakkato) proved why she is a winner on Thursday, speeding through the course and giving a little extra effort at the end.

“I got lucky,” McArdle detailed. “She lost a shoe and she slipped a little bit on the way to the last line, but she still true blue left the ground for me and had a super finish.”

Thursday’s win marks the pair’s third victory in the 1.45m division for this year’s Summer Series and McArdle explained that the venue suits her horse well.

“Spruce Meadows is a great venue for her because of the grass fields; she is able to really gallop,” the rider explained. “In today’s course, the way the numbers were, she was able to keep a big stride and a big gallop where the other horses had to steady in the lines. She is also really quick away from the fences.”

“It is important to remember with her that where other people may leave out strides in the lines, I have to not get so focused on that and really try to make it up in the turns and always just stick to my plan,” McArdle added. “We have had a super partnership. I consider her the best 1.45m speed horse there is. She is super careful.”

Competition continues on Friday featuring the $34,000 Friends of the Meadows Cup 1.45m followed by the $85,000 Ashcor Technologies Cup 1.55m.

Second Year in a Row – Barrios Wins 2014 Hagyard Challenge Series Leading Rider Award

Pablo Barrios and Antares.

Lexington, KY – October 20, 2014 – After dominating the Hagyard Challenge Series for the second year in a row, Venezuelan rider Pablo Barrios has captured the $50,000 Hagyard Leading Rider Award. He and his talented mounts earned the winning honors in four of the seven Hagyard Lexington Classic events, which coupled with other top placings, gave Barrios an early lead in the standings that he never relinquished.

“Winning this bonus means a lot in different ways,” noted Barrios. “The first is that shows that you have been a consistent rider during all of the shows in Lexington. Also, the money is big help, especially for me because I own a lot of my own horses. There are a lot of expenses starting the year in Wellington and the bonus is a wonderful help, and I am very thankful to Hagyard for sponsoring it.”

The Hagyard Challenge Series is a summer-long series of seven show jumping events at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Barrios’ consistent efforts helped him accumulate 1,420 points, enough to almost double the total of second place finisher Shane Sweetnam of Ireland at 730 points.

New this year though, the Hagyard Challenge Series introduced an additional $10,000 rider bonus for the runner-up. Sweetnam collected the secondary bonus, taking home top ribbons throughout the series and winning the Hagyard Lexington Classic during the Kentucky Summer Classic with Bijzonder.

“Two years ago I won the bigger bonus and I think it’s great for the riders because it gives them an extra incentive to compete in those classes and there is a very high standard in those grand prix events,” explained Sweetnam. “It’s great that they added the secondary bonus this year. It looked like Pablo had it wrapped up halfway through, and it gives the other riders like me more incentive to keep going.”

Hagyard Equine Medical Institute’s Dr. Stuart Brown commented, “Once again, Hagyard Equine Medical Institute continues to be honored to support this Series at The Kentucky Horse Park bringing the highest quality of competition in the sport of Grand Prix Jumping to the Bluegrass throughout the summer. Without a doubt, fans and spectators of equestrian competition are able to witness these incredible horses and their riders in one of the nation’s most spectacular settings for equestrian sport. We remain grateful to the support of our sponsors as partners in the Leading Rider Award that is a cornerstone for the Hagyard Challenge Series. Also, we appreciate the support of the talented horses and riders who make this Series such a success each season. Congratulations to this year’s winners, as well as all the competitors and owners who have been such wonderful patrons in support of this Series. Lastly, we appreciate all the fans and spectators of the sport who follow the Series each year, and Hagyard Equine Medical Institute looks forward to another exciting season of competition in 2015.”

Pablo Barrios Furthers Lead in Hagyard Challenge Series Standings

Pablo Barrios and Antares.

Lexington, KY – August 19, 2014 – Pablo Barrios has all but wrapped up the $50,000 Leading Rider Bonus in Hagyard Challenge Series, but the race for the $10,000 bonus being awarded to the second place finisher is just heating up. Barrios and Antares captured the top prize during Friday’s $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic, which coupled with three other wins gives him a clear lead in the standings.

However, Friday’s second place finisher Ramiro Quintana is just 150 points away from Ireland’s Shane Sweetnam in the standings. Sweetnam took home the victory during the Kentucky Summer Classic, but Quintana’s consistent efforts have also kept him in the running for the second place spot and a chance for $10,000.

The Hagyard Challenge Series is a summer-long series of seven show jumping events at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The rider who accumulates the most points in the series will receive a $50,000 Leading Rider Award, presented during the Kentucky National Horse Show in September. New this year, the runner up will earn a $10,000 prize for their efforts in the Series. The sixth event in the series will be this Friday during the KHJA Horse Show at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Back to Back Wins for Barrios in the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic

Pablo Barrios and Antares soar to victory.

Lexington, KY – August 15, 2014 – Who ever said lightning never strikes the same place twice has not met Pablo Barrios. The Venezuelan rider once again piloted Antares to the top of the pack in the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic presented by Zoetis, mimicking his effort two weeks prior in the $50,000 Kentucky Summer Grand Prix.

The win comes just in time for Barrios to add to his stockpile of points for the Hagyard Leading Rider Bonus before he jets off to Normandy for the World Equestrian Games. The $50,000 bonus is given to the rider accumulating the most points throughout the Hagyard Challenge Series, a summer-long set of seven show jumping events at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Friday night’s prix marks the fifth class in the series.

“I’m really, really happy with the result today, because I was looking for this from the beginning to make sure I got the bonus,” Barrios said of the win. “I’m not going to be able to go to the last two Hagyard Series prixs because I’ll be in Europe, so I wanted this to happen and I think I’ve done all I can to keep the bonus.”

That’s an understatement. Barrios has more than twice the number of points as the next closest rider, and he has earned them on a number of different horses, Antares being his most recent victor. The 9-year-old bay gelding is getting ready to compete in the WEG with Barrios, and looks to be in fine form.

“Antares is a new mount for me. I just got him in April, but we have already developed a very good relationship,” Barrios said. “I was a little concerned if he would be fast enough, because he’s a big horse, but he’s really fast. He turns really well. He moves quick off the ground. He’s pretty special to me.”

Barrios is not kidding when he says the big gelding is quick and agile. Thirteen horses jumped clean over the Allen Rheinheimer designed course, and Antares went early in the jump off with plenty of speed horses behind him, including second place finisher Ramiro Quintana on Caramello Z. Barrios shaved seconds off his time by taking an inside turn coming out of a one stride combination to a vertical before galloping for the finish over the Hagyard fence.

“He’s so clever,” Barrios said of Antares. “I mean when I turned to that vertical after the in and out, I found the vertical at the last minute after the inside turn, and he just pats the ground and jumps beautiful.

He also has a big stride, so I could leave a stride out to the last fence, and he still tries to leave the rails up,” Barrios continued. “I’m very happy with that horse.”

In sharp contrast to Barrios’ big horse was second place finisher Ramiro Quintana’s mount Caramello Z. The short and spicy 9-year-old mare missed the winning time in the jump off by fractions of a second.

“Her grandmother is Ratina Z, so she’s got a lot of blood in her breeding,” Quintana said of the mare. “She’s definitely has a lot of blood and a lot of character, which is a good thing, but you have to keep her contained, because otherwise she’s like a loose cannon.”

Quintana is pretty confident he could have outpaced Barrios and Antares, but a momentary lapse in focus cost him in the jump off.

“I was planning on doing six strides one to two,” Quintana said of his jump off plan, “but I had a hard rub at the second fence, and after that it was an inside turn. I lost my concentration for a second because I was listening to hear if the pole was coming down.

So I couldn’t really cut the stride going into the horseshoe jump,” Ramiro continued, “and I lost the class there. I just lost my concentration for a fraction of a second, and it cost me.”

Speaking of the horseshoe jump, the fence Quintana is referencing caught a fair number of horses and riders off-guard in Friday’s class, collecting more than its share of rails and refusals. Designed and built by Steve Stephens, the uniquely shaped jump was used earlier in the day in the first round of the USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals, and both Quintana and Barrios admit they made an error in how they approached it with their first mounts in the class.

“It’s not a fence we’re used to jumping, but I made a mistake with my first horse and with Antares to go show them that fence,” Barrios said. Both he and Quintana let their horses halt and sniff at the fence prior to starting the course.

“They really got very nervous; I think I shouldn’t have shown them it,” Barrios continued. “I think they were expecting for the whole course when that jump was coming, and they were jumping a little tense. The last horse I didn’t show it, and he looked at it but he jumped it really well.”

Quintana is in agreement on both the challenge of the fence and how to address it, though he learned the hard way. He rode Versus before Caramello Z in the first round, and chose not to continue on Versus after running thorough the top rails of the horseshoe fence.

“I had a lot of problems there with my first horse; he spooked really hard there,” Quintana said. “When I went in with Caramello Z, I didn’t even show it to her. With my first horse I went in and I showed it to him and it almost spooked the horse even more.

“She went around and came to the fence and saw it at the last minute and jumped, and it was too late to do anything,” Quintana continued. “Sometimes that’s better – if you address it too much they get scared and they don’t know why you’re shoving this jump in their face.”

Barrios Is Best with Antares in $50,000 Kentucky Summer Grand Prix

Pablo Barrios and Antares.

Lexington, KY – August 2, 2014 – If the $50,000 Kentucky Summer Grand Prix sponsored by GGT Footing is any indication of how the Venezuelan team will perform at the 2014 World Equestrian Games in Normandy France, then they look very strong. Pablo Barrios’ rule of the Rolex Stadium at the Kentucky Horse Park continued as he piloted Antares to blazing double clear victory, while fellow Venezuelan rider Angel Karolyi took home the second place honors aboard Indiana 127, just shy of Barrios’ winning time.

With 46 entries in tonight’s main event and only two belonging to Barrios, it might not have seemed like the odds were in his favor, but the speedy South American was ready to showcase his winning ways once again. Richard Jeffery’s first round track yielded 16 clears, creating a tiebreaker where only those that took the risks would end up on top.

The pathfinder was another well-known Venezuelan rider: Emanuel Andrade with Hardrock Z. They were able to neatly make their way over each obstacle, and they set the clear time to beat at 40.945 seconds, which held up for fifth place. The next rider in the ring bested his time, which was Brazil’s Paulo Santana on Taloubet. They were three seconds faster in a clear 37.803 seconds, but even that time would not claim the top spot and was beat by the next on course. Angel Karolyi, fresh off of speedy duels at the Spruce Meadows Tournament with Hollow Creek Farm’s Indiana 127, was ready for the challenge. Going early in the order, he added a stride in one of the rollbacks, but left out a stride in the last line, resulting in a clear score of 36.819 seconds.

“I was just being a bit cautious going a little bit early in the jump-off,” admitted Karolyi. “I was the first one to leave out to the last jump, but I wasn’t ready to do two risks going so early.”

Unfortunately for Karolyi, Barrios was two rounds later, and with the opportunity to watch Santana and Karolyi he knew where he could make up time with Antares. The duo sliced sharply back to the combination and galloped full speed to a vertical on the other side of the ring, resulting in a time of 35.315 seconds that would go straight to the top of the leader board and prove unbeatable. The only other rider to slip into a top five position was the United States’ Chelsea Moss with Stormfront Stables’ Operette St. Loise, clearing the course in 39.949 seconds to place fourth.

After Barrios’ winner, Karolyi said, “We’re just getting ready to go to the WEG. We’re focused on that, so I’m happy that if anybody beat me that it was my teammate.”

“I knew that I had to take every risk, and I did it,” explained Barrios after his win. “Antares responded amazingly. I’m definitely taking him to the WEG. He’s just jumping great. He’s strong, powerful, clever, careful and fast. Antares has everything. The only thing that he doesn’t have is experience, and I think I’ve given him a lot of good experience in the last two months.”

Barrios and Antares have only been paired together since the end of the Winter Equestrian Festival. They competed together during the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows, but Barrios admits he is a different horse now. “In May, he could jump this course clear, but there was no chance he could go that fast, so there have been huge improvements. I think he’s my type of ride. We get along very well. It’s a great match in a short period of time.”

Although Barrios bought Antares knowing he was talented mount, he did not expect him to be ready for the World Equestrian Games this year. “I knew he had the scope, but I didn’t know that he would develop this quickly,” he noted. “In Calgary, I did the Queen’s Cup and then the $400,000 Grand Prix and he jumped both really well. I still have a month to work with him, but I think I can be competitive at WEG with this horse. I think I can make it to the top 30 because I know he has the scope; I know he’s brave, and I know he’s careful.”

Barrios’ record at the Kentucky Horse Park is unmatched, and he knows that tonight’s victory was very special. “I love this place,” he expressed. “It feels like home. The first time that I came here ever I won the grand prix. It’s something about this place that I feel like I belong to this place.”

He also knows his success would not be possible without his team at Pablo Barrios Show Stables, and his sponsors Purina, Der Dau, Choice of Champions, Healthy Coat, Animo and Devoucoux.

The Kentucky Summer Classic will conclude tomorrow with the NAL/WIHS Child and Adult Jumper Classics in the Rolex Stadium. Next week, Kentucky Horse Park will host the 2014 U.S. Pony Finals, followed by the Bluegrass Classic Horse Show and the 2014 USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals.

Pablo Barrios Maintains Lead in Hagyard Challenge Series

Pablo Barrios and Antares.

Lexington, KY – August 2, 2014 – Although the victory in Thursday night’s $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic went to Ireland’s Shane Sweetnam, a third place finish on Antares and victories in the previous three events have solidified Pablo Barrios’ lead in the Hagyard Challenge Series Standings.

Shane Sweetnam has edged his way into the second place with his win on Thursday, while an eighth place finish for Emanuel Andrade has helped him stay in the third place position as they continue to compete for the Leading Rider Bonus.

The Hagyard Challenge Series is a summer-long series of seven show jumping events at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The rider who accumulates the most points in the series will receive a $50,000 Leading Rider Award, presented during the Kentucky National Horse Show in September. The fourth event in the series will be next Thursday during the Kentucky Summer Classic at the Kentucky Horse Park.

“I really want to win it,” said Barrios, who won the bonus in 2013. “I own a lot of my own horses so that helps with the expenses. That bonus helps a lot, especially at the end of the year when you have to pay stalls at WEF.”

Hagyard Equine Medical Institute is one of the oldest and largest equine veterinary practices in the world. Founded in 1876, the institute offers a staff with qualifications unparalleled by any single non-university veterinary group in the equine industry, and Hagyard veterinarians have dedicated themselves to the health and wellbeing of the horse for more than 130 years.

Pablo Barrios Dominates Hagyard Challenge Series Standings

Pablo Barrios and Zara Leandra.

Lexington, KY – July 26, 2014 – Going three-for-three, Pablo Barrios has won all of the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic events to date, giving him a very solid lead in the standings for the 2014 Hagyard Challenge Series. Barrios and his veteran partner Zara Leandra bested an eight-horse jump-off to earn their third victory during the Kentucky Summer Horse Show on Thursday night, putting him well ahead of the other riders vying for the $50,000 Leading Rider Bonus.

Although he did not place on Thursday night, top placings in the previous two events have helped Emanuel Andrade maintain his second place position. Shane Sweetnam earned the third and eighth place honors on Thursday, vaulting him into the third place spot.

“I did this class with Zara Leandra because I really want to win the bonus,” said Barrios after his win this week. “It’s a little more pressure in this class with Zara Leandra because I feel like she should automatically go clear. The Hagyard series puts a little more pressure on, but I think I’m better under pressure.”
