Super Derby Winner Wallenda, Euthanized at 26

Wallenda at Old Friends (Photo by Equisport)

GEORGETOWN, KY – MAY 9, 2016 – Wallenda, a multiple graded-stakes winner, was euthanized today at Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement farm in Georgetown, KY., where he had been pensioned since 2007.

The 26-year-old stallion had been dealing with complications brought on by a collapsed suspensory.

“He was, by any definition, a warrior,” said Old Friends founder and President Michael Blowen. “Like his sire, Gulch, who was also with us for many years, Wallenda was one of the toughest and most resilient horses we have ever known.

“Despite his ongoing hoof issues, he maintained a gleam in his eye and vibrant attitude,” Blowen continued. “But today his demeanor changed, and after much discussion with our vet, Dr. Bryan Waldridge, the vets at Hagyard, and the amazing farriers at Dr. Bryan Fraley’s Equine Podiatry, we felt Wallenda’s medical issues had reached the point where we could no longer maintain his comfort or quality of life.”

Named after the famous aerialist Karl Wallenda of The Flying Wallendas, the horse was bred by Peter M. Brant and Haras Santa Maria de Araras, and was later purchased by Cot Campbell’s Dogwood Stables.

A Kentucky Derby contender in 1993, Wallenda went on to win the Pennsylvania Derby, though his greatest victory came later that year in the Louisiana Super Derby, where he beat Saintly Prospector at the wire for the $400,000 purse.

Wallenda [Gulch – So Glad (ARG), Liloy (FR.)] had seven wins from his 33 starts and career earnings of just over $1.2 million.

Entering stud in 1995, the dark bay stallion went first to New Zealand and later at Toyosato Stallion Center in Hokkaido, Japan.  Old Friends, with the help of Dogwood, trainer Frank Alexander, members of the stallion’s syndicate, and loyal supporters, returned Wallenda to the United States in 2007.

“We’re extremely grateful to Dr. Fraley and his team for their continued care and creative approach to Wallenda’s welfare and comfort,” said Blowen, “and we’re grateful to Cot Campbell and everyone who helped us bring him home from Japan. He was a favorite here on the farm and we will miss seeing him every day.”

Old Friends Derby Time!

Photon and Rail Trip racing for carrots. Photo © Laura Battles.

We’re just a few days away from the first Saturday in May and virtually every entry has an Old Friends connection. Creator, who shares his name with our great European Gr. 1 winner, was ridden by Cash Asmussen. Steve Asmussen, Cash’s brother, trains the American Creator. Bob Baffert with Mor Spirit is one of our most generous, supportive friends and trained our two Derby winners, Silver Charm (1997) and War Emblem (2002). We have retirees ridden by John Velasquez (Commentator), Gary Stevens (Silver Charm), Mike Smith (Game On Dude), and Victor Espinoza (War Emblem). The list goes on and on.

And while I agree that the Kentucky Derby is the most exciting two minutes in sports, these great athletes’ lives go on for many, more years. That’s where Old Friends and all the other Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance organizations come in handy. Whether it’s Lusty Latin or Easy Grades, both well-beaten by War Emblem, or precocious horses such as Dinard, Afternoon Deelites and Wallenda, who were all Derby candidates, we treat them all the same. We are honored to care for them well beyond their three-year-old years. Sometimes, like Derby contender Gulch, they live into their early 30s. So when the gates open at Churchill Downs on Saturday, and we all hold our collective breaths, I’ll be thinking of the hundreds of Saturdays that many of them will be with us. Because to me, at Old Friends, every day is as exciting as the run for the roses. Except now, they’re running for carrots.

We hope you can attend our 12th Annual Homecoming Event May 8th, the day after Derby here on the farm. Many thanks to all of our supporters and volunteers.

The 80-page, softcover book, penned with the assistance from former Boston Globe columnist Diane White, combines selected commentary from Little Silver Charm’s popular Facebook page with photos from Eclipse-Award winning photographer Barbara Livingston, the Lexington-based Equisport Photos, and New York lenser Connie Bush, among many others.

Through his wry and witty observations, Little Silver Charm chronicles the story of Old Friends and showcases many of the celebs that have visited the farm over the years, including jockeys Rosie Napravnik, Kent Desormeaux, and Angel Cordero and owner Joe Torre.

Old Friends Launches New Line of “Virtual Tour” Videos

Game On Dude in retirement at Old Friends (Photo by EquiSport)

GEORGETOWN, KY – APRIL 21, 2016 – Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, KY, is happy to announce the launch of its new “virtual tour” video collection.

Sponsored by a grant from the Binky Foundation and produced by Matt and Wendy Wooley of the Lexington-based EquiSport Photos, each 3-4 minute virtual tour will feature one of the horses retired at Old Friends and will be presented by Old Friends founder and President Michael Blowen.

The videos intermingle live footage with still photographs, backstories, and memorable career highlights.

Each video is viewable on a desktop computer or mobile device and can be accessed via the Old Friends Facebook page and on the Old Friends YouTube channel, a link to which is available on the website at www.oldfriendsequine.org.

The inaugural video, released April 3, featured 1997 Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion Silver Charm (CLICK HERE TO SEE VIDEO).  It will be followed by the release of a visit with three-time Santa Anita Handicap winner Game On Dude.  To view the just released Game On Dude Virtual Tour, CLICK HERE.

Additional videos to be released in the coming weeks will feature Super Derby star Wallenda, Eclipse-Award winning mare Hidden Lake, and Kentucky Derby and Preakness Champion War Emblem.  The farm expects to produce 10 virtual-tour videos in all.

“We have been blessed with thousands of fans visiting the farm who enjoy an up-close-and-personal experience with our wonderful retirees,” said Blowen. “But we know there are people who can’t travel or may never have the opportunity to come to Kentucky. For those people, these virtual tours are the next best thing to being here.

“Wendy Wooley is an incredibly talented videographer and, more so, she has a great feel for what we do here at Old Friends,” Blowen continued. “These videos really echo the live-tour experience.”

“Matt and I have always enjoyed our visits to Old Friends,” said Wendy Wooley. “It’s very exciting for us to be a part of a project that allows so many fans to not only get a behind-the-scenes look at the retirees on the farm but also hear Michael’s colorful anecdotes!”

Old Friends also extends its thanks to the Binky Foundation, a private charitable organization dedicated to the protection of domestic and wild animals, for their support with this project.

The “War Emblem” Is Final Design on the Block in Old Friends 7th Hats Off to the Horses Auction

All proceeds from the online fashion auction to benefit Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement Facility

GEORGETOWN, KY – FEBRUARY 2, 2016 – Last chance! The sixth and final Derby-style hat in the online fashion auction “Hats Off to the Horses: The Road to the Derby” goes on the block April 1st.

The last hat in the six-month auction, which raises money for Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, KY, will honor 2002 Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner War Emblem, who retired to Old Friends last September.

The beautiful chapeau is modeled by Shea Leparoux accompanied by her husband, leading jockey Julien Leparoux.

Bidding on “The War Emblem” begins at 8 pm on April 1st and will be open for 10 days only.  Interested bidders can go to the Old Friends website at www.oldfriendsequine.org and follow the link.

This is the seventh consecutive year that Old Friends has joined with acclaimed milliner Sally Faith Steinmann of the Massachusetts-based Maggie Mae Designs® to auction off six exclusive Derby-style chapeaus between November and April, each inspired by one of the non-profit organization’s 160 retired racehorses.

About the Horse

Bred by Charles Nuckols of Midway, KY, War Emblem (Our Emblem – Sweetest Lady, Lord at War) captured the Illinois Derby in an impressive gate-to-wire victory. Three weeks later he captured the 128th running of the Kentucky Derby.

Following a win in the Preakness, War Emblem became a serious contender to capture history’s 12th Triple Crown, but he stumbled badly at the start of the Belmont Stakes and ended up beaten by long-shot Sarava, who, as fate would have it, is now also a retiree at Old Friends.

War Emblem went on to capture the Haskell Invitational for a third Grade 1 win that year and retired with 13 starts, 7 wins and earnings of $3,491,000.

He stood stallion duty in Japan until 2015, when he was returned to the United States to be pensioned at Old Friends.

About the Hat

The foundation of the “War Emblem” hat was fashioned as a wide-brim design, measuring a full 30 inches across, done in deep black silk, with a white brocade under brim that frames the wearer’s face when the hat is upturned.

The chapeau is trimmed with a unique ruffled edge that allows light to pass through the sheer fabric. Created out of black silk organza overlaid with black silk “pinstripes”, the resulting look is one of smooth elegance befitting this great Thoroughbred athlete.

Three large rose curls were placed along the crown to echo the horse’s Triple Crown campaign, with each rose beautifully framed in a medley of emerald green and bold blue leaves.

For the finishing touch, a large black pebble button adorns the back of the hat.

Maggie Mae Designs® Custom Millinery offers magnificent hats for all occasions – from glamorous racing events such as the Kentucky Derby and the Royal Ascot to stunning bridal wear and handsome cocktail fashions. Every hat is carefully handcrafted by milliner Sally Faith Steinmann from her home base in South Harwich, MA. Salons of her fashions can be seen on her website at www.maggiemaedesigns.com.

Silver Charm Portrait by Barbara Livingston Now Available

Dual Classic winner Silver Charm on the day of the barn fire at Old Friends (Photo by Barbara Livingston)

GEORGETOWN, KY – MARCH 11, 2016 – Old Friends, the Thoroughbred Retirement Facility in Georgetown, KY, in conjunction with Daily Racing Form and photographer Barbara Livingston, is proud to offer for sale an exclusive, limited-edition portrait of dual-classic winner Silver Charm.

The image of the now retired Kentucky Derby and Preakness champion galloping in freshly fallen snow was captured by Eclipse-Award-winning photographer Barbara Livingston at Old Friends’ Dream Chase in January, on the day a devastating fire destroyed one of their barns.

When news of the fire got out, many friends and supporters stopped by Old Friends to offer support and well wishes. Among them was Livingston, who came to officially record the tragedy with her camera. But while she was there she noticed Silver Charm running joyfully, and she quickly captured this stark but stunning image.

After Livingston shared the picture on her social media, it went viral and soon became one of the most requested Old Friends photos ever. Daily Racing Form editors worked with Livingston and Old Friends to make available this limited-edition 8 x 10 portrait (only 250 have been produced), each signed by the artist.

“On a dim, smoke-filled afternoon Barbara was able to see a beautiful ray of silver light,” said Old Friends founder and President Michael Blowen. “This photograph is not only a testament to her enormous talent, but I also like to think of it as a forecast of our future: Hopeful.

“We can’t thank Barbara and our friends at DRF enough for helping us share this wonderful picture of the great Silver Charm with his fans.”

The photographs are available for $50, plus $3.00 shipping and handling, and can be ordered by visiting the Old Friends eBay store (CLICK HERE) or by visiting the Old Friends website (www.oldfriendsequine.org) and following the eBay link.

All proceeds from the sale of the photo will go to Old Friends and will contribute to barn rebuilding efforts.

An Update on War Emblem from Old Friends

Photo © Rick Capone.

When a stallion is imported into the United States from any foreign country, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has various “import” regulations, including a requirement that says the stallion must do a “test breeding.” The reason behind this is to determine if the animal is infected with, or a carrier of, the very serious disease known as Contagious Equine Metritis or CEM.

CEM is a highly contagious bacteria, which has more or less been eradicated in the U.S., and can be spread during live breeding, artificial insemination, or through contact with contaminated objects. CEM-positive horses that show no signs of illness (called “carriers”) can cause outbreaks at breeding facilities. It is highly contagious among horses and can be difficult to detect and control.

While it is clear that War Emblem, as a retired resident of Old Friends, would never be called upon to breed, the USDA is still obligated to consider that an intact stallion carrying CEM could get loose and inadvertently breed a mare or dispel the disease via human interaction with infected semen. If the disease should again become widespread in the United States, the horse industry could suffer considerable economic losses.

Following his importation into the United States from Japan, War Emblem, whose reluctance in the breeding shed throughout his stud career was well documented, was placed in quarantine at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital. There, a team of veterinary reproduction specialists diligently worked with the 16-year-old stallion to help him test breed the required two mares and clear import regulations. Despite their best efforts, and with one month of attempts, War Emblem did not breed a mare during this time.

After much deliberation with the USDA, consultation with several veterinarians, and with all other options exhausted, it was decided that the stallion War Emblem be castrated to comply with Kentucky and United States Departments of Agriculture (USDA) import regulations.

Every precaution was taken to insure a successful surgery. The procedure was performed on the farm to decrease War Emblem’s stress and allow him to recuperate in familiar surroundings. Dr. Bryan Waldridge, Old Friends’ resident vet, called upon his mentor from Auburn University, Dr. Hui-Chu Lin, to administer the anesthesia. Dr. Lin is considered the most prominent equine anesthesiologists in the country, and she brought along her associate, Glen Sellers. The surgery was done by Rood & Riddle’s Dr. Brad Tanner with assistance from Rood & Riddle’s Dr. Colt Daughtery.

War Emblem has responded like the champion he is. He is fully recovered, and we are hopeful that gelding him will allow him lead a more relaxed and peaceful life in retirement, one that he so richly deserves. Old Friends wishes to thank all the veterinarians whose combined expertise resulted in a safe, successful procedure and subsequent recovery.

Old Friends Update – After the Fire

Photo © Tim Wilson.

At 7 a.m. on January 23, our small, quarantine barn burned to the ground. James Crump safely removed the barn’s two part-time residents, Archie’s Echo and Alphabet Soup. No one was injured. The Georgetown/Scott County Fire Department appeared in a flash and prevented the fire from spreading. It was the best possible outcome from a terrible situation. We’re still awaiting the final report from the fire Marshall and the final determination from our insurance company.

In the days following the fire, the horse-racing community came together — big time — to help. There were fans donating a few dollars and such organizations as the Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) and the folks at the NTRA/DRF National Handicapping Championship Charity Challenge making larger contributions. Not only that – neighboring farms offered stall space if we needed it along with hay and blankets. Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron showed up later that day to offer his help and make a donation. We were humbled by the outpouring of support and it made us optimistic about being able to rebuild.

Then, Fasig-Tipton and Blue Horse Charities donated $50,000. Fasig-Tipton’s President Boyd Browning called and asked if I knew John Hettinger. I did. John was the most influential member of the horse-racing community to support aftercare with his heart and his dollars, and I adored him. His intelligence, pragmatism and generosity has led to hundreds of Thoroughbreds leading productive, relaxed lives during their post racing and breeding careers. We are honored to name our new barn, The John Hettinger Memorial Barn.

Personally, I had never been around fire before. The ferocity and speed of the barn’s disintegration made me a believer. Now, I see our big old tobacco barn as a liability. So the new barn will be a bigger structure and as fireproof as we can possibly make it and, if we raise enough money, we would like to renovate our existing metal hay barn into a new “hospital/quarantine” barn for incoming horses and those that require veterinary attention.

We are currently designing plans for our new barn and determining a budget. The donations, combined with the pending insurance settlement, will be used to build a sturdy barn worthy of the Hettinger name. Once we begin, we will issue updates on our barn construction.

Genuine Reward now occupies Gulch’s paddock and Game On Dude’s new pal is Sarbonne. You might remember Sarbonne as Zenyatta’s target during her workouts. He never won but he did his job with grace and humility, contributing to her spectacular success. Now, he’s with another multiple Grade 1 winner and a great addition to the tours. Check out Barbara Livingston’s photographs of Silver Charm and War Emblem on her website. War Emblem is settling in very nicely. He really likes his space and, believe me, he gets it. He’s in the paddock previously occupied by Rapid Redux and Amazombie. Those two have moved into the big paddock next to Genuine Reward.

Once again, thanks to everyone for everything.
