Joins play by play man Brian Lookabill for in-depth coverage of prime time events

Lexington, KY – October 15, 2014 – The National Horse Show announced today that popular Canadian equestrian, Angela Covert, will be joining the commentary team for this year’s live webcasts of the evening’s main events. She will be partnered with play by play man Brian Lookabill for the prime time shows. The top-rated National Horse Show returns to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky, on October 28 – November 2, 2014.

The webcast is produced by Pyramid Sports Timing, one of the top producers of equestrian competitions in the United States and will air on the USEF Network. Special guest, previous Maclay champion, Lilli Keenan joins Lookabill for the coverage of the ASPCA Maclay on Sunday. In addition, all morning and afternoon rounds will be streamed live without commentary.

With $755,000 in prize money offered, this year’s National Horse Show offers an International Open Jumpers with $460,000 in prize money, while the top rated hunter sections have a total purse of $195,00.

Meanwhile, $100,000 in total is offered to the Amateur-Owner and U 25 Jumper sections.

The National Horse Show, for the fourth year in a row, received a top ranking from NARG, the North American Riders Group and was again named the Show Hunter Hall of Fame Horse Show of the Year in back to back years.

The National, in choosing Covert as their color commentator, was searching for a fresh, new voice explained Mason Phelps, Jr., the President of the National Horse Show Association of America. “The National has been improving and evolving each year and we thought a commentator with a vast knowledge of the sport, yet a fresh, new internet voice would suit us best. That’s why we chose Angela,” he explained. “She’s got a tremendous personality and possesses a great knowledge of our sport. I’m anxious to hear her go to work.”

“I have actually never done TV or Internet commentary,” smiled Covert. “I guess the closest I have come would be teaching clinics/symposiums and once I did the live commentary for a young horse free jumping demonstration, not nearly the same thing! But, I am very much looking forward to jumping in and giving it a go at the National Horse Show. I have to admit that the fact that I will be working with Brian Lookabill is a big plus,” she smiled. “He has so much experience and knowledge and is definitely one of the best in the business.”

“Even as a Canadian equestrian, I have always considered the National Horse Show to be one of the most prestigious horse shows in North America,” she continued. “When I was very young, the iconic National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden was part of the indoor circuit with our Royal Winter Fair. Despite the fact that the horse show has changed venues a few times since those days, finding a new home in Kentucky a few years ago, the organizers have somehow managed to preserve that prestigious feel, which is truly remarkable,” Covert said.

Michael Hughes Becomes Two-Time Winner of Region 2 Maclay Regional Championships

Michael Hughes.

North Salem, NY – September 13, 2014 – Every year, junior riders from around the country strive to earn points to qualify for the ASPCA/NHSAA Maclay Regional Championships.

On Saturday, 52 of those young, qualified riders gathered at the American Gold Cup CSI4*-W to compete in the Region 2 ASPCA/NHSAA Maclay Regional Championships and to vie for their shot to ride at the esteemed ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship Championship Finals at the National Horse Show this November.

Of the riders competing at the Region 2 Maclay Regional Championships, there was one rider in particular who has stood out to the judges for two years in a row: Michael Hughes. Hughes took the top call in the class last year, and he came back to do the same on Saturday.

The 18-year-old from Allendale, NJ shot to the top of the judges’ scorecards following the over fences phase, conducted over a course of multiple bending and broken lines and in-and-out combinations in the indoor arena of Old Salem Farm. Hughes then held that lead through the flat phase that is unique to the Maclay equitation format, clinching the victory, just as he did last year.

This year however, Hughes also got to earn the win alongside longtime friend and North Run barn mate, Ailish Cunniffe who finished in second.

“Together we both owe a lot to Missy [Clark] and John [Brennan]. They have taken us so far along in the equitation,” Cunniffe said. “We’re both so thankful for all of their help and both of our parents as well. My mom and dad and his mom and dad have both been big factors.

“My parents are professionals just like Mikey’s,” Cunniffe said, in speaking of her parents, Frank and Bonnie Cunniffe, and Hughes’ parents, Eamonn and Cathy Hughes. “We’ve known each other for quite some time. It’s neat to be doing well together.”

While both Hughes and Cunniffe credit their parents and North Run for much of their success, they are also quick to recognize the horses they competed today. For Cunniffe, that meant recognizing Venice, the equitation horse that she has owned for over a year, but for Hughes, up until this morning he still had the decision to make as to what horse he would be on.

“I didn’t really know which horse I was going to do,” Hughes said. “I had to choose between a younger horse of Missy’s and an experienced horse that had already been there, Campreoll. I knew [Campreoll] was going to go in and be really good. I really have to thank Cailin McNamara, the owner, and Brian Feigus for letting me ride him.”

With their performance together today, Campreoll will most likely be the mount that Hughes rides for the Maclay Finals at the National Horse Show, but he will be deciding for sure over the next month.

“I still have a few horses to choose from that weren’t even here. I have to thank all of the people that have given me horses to ride,” Hughes said.

Choosing the right horse to allow him to ride his best at the Maclay Finals is particularly important this year, as it is Hughes’ last year competing as a junior.

“He’s a grandpa!” joked Cunniffe.

While Cunniffe still has another shot at the Maclay Finals victory after this year, it is guaranteed that they will both work equally hard for their shot at the victory and the possibility to earn their place in the record books.

“The fact also that it’s been around for so long and that it used to be at [Madison Square Garden] makes it a special class,” Cunniffe said.

“It means a lot,” Hughes added. “Doing the equitation has been so much fun. You learn so much from it, and going to finals every year and having a new experience is great whether you win or not.”

Rounding out the top three in Saturday’s class was Lucy Deslauriers riding Lucky D’etenclin. Fourth place went to Megan MacPherson and Great Expectations.

All of the top entries from today’s Regional Championship have qualified for the ASPCA Alfred B. Maclay Horsemanship Championship Finals at the National Horse Show, to be held Nov. 2, 2014. For more information, visit www.nhs.org.

USEF Network Provides Live Coverage of ASPCA Maclay Finals at National Horse Show

Lillie Keenan was last year’s ASPCA Alfred B. Maclay winner. Photo by Shawn McMillen.

Lexington, KY – August 12, 2014 – The National Horse Show is pleased to announce that the USEF Network will be providing full live-streaming coverage of the 2014 events, including the Alfred B. Maclay ASPCA National Championship, presented by Dover Saddlery. Live commentators will be Brian Lookabill and Lillie Kennan, who took home the impressive Maclay victory in 2013. The event is scheduled for November 2, 2014 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

The ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship class has been held since 1933, and it is one of the most prestigious competitions for junior riders in the United States. Its winners are some of the biggest names in equestrian sport. Previous winners include: William Steinkraus in 1941, Frank Chapot (1948), George Morris (1952), Leslie Burr Howard (1972), Stacia Klein Madden in 1987, and Nicole Shahinian Simpson in 1992. The 2012 ASPCA Maclay National Championship winner was Jacob Pope, and in 2013 Lillie Keenan was named the winner.

Keenan of New York, NY has been at the top of the sport since she was a pony rider, and 2013 was an exceptional year for her career. It began with the 2013 North American Junior and Young Rider Championships Show Jumping Gold Medal, followed by her first grand prix victory at HITS-on-the-Hudson and a win in the USEF Junior Jumper Individual Championship. At the end of the year she took home the victory in the Pessoa/USEF Hunter Seat Medal and the ASPCA National Championship. This year, Keenan has been focused on the jumper ring, including representing the United States on the Nations Cup teams in Ascona, Switzerland and Bratsilava, Slovakia.

“I’m very excited because I’ve never done any commentary or live broadcasting so I’m looking forward to a new experience,” expressed Keenan. “Last year, after the Finals, I got to watch the replay of the whole class with Jacob Pope commentating and I think he did a wonderful job. It will be a really interesting experience to be on the other side as a viewer, but one I’m looking forward to.”

Brian Lookabill was the production manager of the National Horse Show in 2013, and is known as the voice of the show ring. Lookabill has been involved with the equestrian industry for over 20 years, and is currently a horse show announcer at the some of the top competitions throughout the country.

“While I’m looking forward to helping with production again this year, I’m also happy to return to the mic for some of our streaming coverage,” noted Lookabill.

“Not everyone can experience a big, championship event first-hand, and we’re lucky to share Maclay day with someone who’s been there. Lillie’s record is pretty unprecedented, winning in the Ponies, Juniors, Young Riders, and even Derby Championships before the Maclay. She’s obviously a dynamic rider who could very well be one of our next Olympians. She is also one of the most composed young ladies I’ve met, and I think she’ll bring some great insight to a historic class that many people only dream of riding in, much less winning.”

With $850,000 in total prize money and an important World Cup Qualifier, the International Open Jumpers will compete for $530,000 in prize money, while the top rated hunter sections have a total purse of $205,000. Meanwhile, $100,000 is offered to the Amateur/Owner and Junior Jumpers.

The fifth edition of the National Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky, is set for October 28 – November 2, 2014.

The show will once again be held at the Kentucky Horse Park.

National Horse Show Welcomes U-25 Jumper Championship

Nicole Bellissimo, Winner of the Artisan Farms Young Rider Semi Final at the Winter Equestrian Festival.

Lexington, KY – March 20, 2014 – Preparation for the 2014 National Horse Show is already underway, and this year the prestigious event will be welcoming a new U-25 Jumper Championship. Pending final approval by USEF, this exciting new addition will be open to all riders ages 16-25 that have participated in the qualifying events and will feature $65,000 in prize money.

The National Horse Show is scheduled for October 28 – November 2, 2014, in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park. The U-25 Jumper Championship will feature three rounds of competition similar to a World Cup Finals format, and will include a speed class, a jump-off class, and the finale, which will feature two rounds. All riders will go forward to the second competition and the first round of the Finale, but only the top 10 will return for the second round of the Finale.

The competition is open to all riders 16-25 that have not participated on a U.S. National Team at the CSIO5* level. The division will feature 25 riders, including any rider winning an individual medal in the Young Rider competition at the 2014 North American Junior and Young Rider Championship, the top five riders from the 2014 Artisan Farms Young Rider Series final standings and four “Wild Card” invitations to be issued by the organizer. The remaining spots will be filled based on the Rolex/USEF Show Jumping Ranking List as of the close of entries.

“The U-25 division is important because I bridges the gap between a Young Rider and a senior high performance rider,” explained DiAnn Langer, U.S. Show Jumping Young Rider Chef d’Equipe/Technical Advisor. “It gives those riders a place to go that allows them to gain the experience they need. In the U.S., we didn’t have a category for that previously; we decided to do what Europe does and add the U-25 category. I think it will be very popular for the advancement of our riders.”

Langer continued, “The excitement for us, shows such as the National with the status that they have stepped right up. For me, it’s a major announcement to the country that we are serious about this group of riders. It’s very important that they get the experience and exposure to progress with their careers.”

“We are so excited about the addition of the U-25 Championship to the National Horse Show,” concluded President Mason Phelps, Jr. “This is a very unique competition that offers an excellent opportunity for the riders that will be the future of our sport. Having them gain experience in this type of ‘World Cup’ format is very important for the development of the pipeline, and we are happy to be part of that.”

Kincannon and Conroy Guide Alltech National Horse Show’s Kentucky Debut

Lexington, KY – August 11, 2012 – When the Alltech National Horse Show makes it Kentucky debut in November, the first class production will be under the direction of one of the nation’s most trusted and experienced managements teams.

The Alltech National Horse Show, 128th Edition, will be held from November 2-6, 2011, at the beautiful, new Alltech Indoor Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. This year’s debut event is designated a CSI4*-W and the featured class, the $250,000 Alltech National Horse Show Grand Prix, will be a 2011/2012 FEI World Cup qualifying event. The ASPCA Maclay National Championships will take center stage on the final Sunday of the show.

Leading the production and heading up the management team are Co-Managers Hugh Kincannon and Leo Conroy.

Hugh Kincannon’s management resume is an impressive one.

Kincannon’s talents were evident early on in his career, as he developed a highly successful series of horse shows at his farm just outside of Cleveland, and then additional events in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1982, he joined forces with the Murphy family at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Since then, he and his team have been producing top rated USEF horse shows at the Kentucky Horse Park for over three decades. His spring and summer series of shows are always near sell-outs and are among the most popular and respected horse shows in the United States.
