USEF Network Provides Live Coverage of ASPCA Maclay Finals at National Horse Show

Lexington, KY – August 12, 2014 – The National Horse Show is pleased to announce that the USEF Network will be providing full live-streaming coverage of the 2014 events, including the Alfred B. Maclay ASPCA National Championship, presented by Dover Saddlery. Live commentators will be Brian Lookabill and Lillie Kennan, who took home the impressive Maclay victory in 2013. The event is scheduled for November 2, 2014 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

The ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship class has been held since 1933, and it is one of the most prestigious competitions for junior riders in the United States. Its winners are some of the biggest names in equestrian sport. Previous winners include: William Steinkraus in 1941, Frank Chapot (1948), George Morris (1952), Leslie Burr Howard (1972), Stacia Klein Madden in 1987, and Nicole Shahinian Simpson in 1992. The 2012 ASPCA Maclay National Championship winner was Jacob Pope, and in 2013 Lillie Keenan was named the winner.

Keenan of New York, NY has been at the top of the sport since she was a pony rider, and 2013 was an exceptional year for her career. It began with the 2013 North American Junior and Young Rider Championships Show Jumping Gold Medal, followed by her first grand prix victory at HITS-on-the-Hudson and a win in the USEF Junior Jumper Individual Championship. At the end of the year she took home the victory in the Pessoa/USEF Hunter Seat Medal and the ASPCA National Championship. This year, Keenan has been focused on the jumper ring, including representing the United States on the Nations Cup teams in Ascona, Switzerland and Bratsilava, Slovakia.

“I’m very excited because I’ve never done any commentary or live broadcasting so I’m looking forward to a new experience,” expressed Keenan. “Last year, after the Finals, I got to watch the replay of the whole class with Jacob Pope commentating and I think he did a wonderful job. It will be a really interesting experience to be on the other side as a viewer, but one I’m looking forward to.”

Brian Lookabill was the production manager of the National Horse Show in 2013, and is known as the voice of the show ring. Lookabill has been involved with the equestrian industry for over 20 years, and is currently a horse show announcer at the some of the top competitions throughout the country.

“While I’m looking forward to helping with production again this year, I’m also happy to return to the mic for some of our streaming coverage,” noted Lookabill.

“Not everyone can experience a big, championship event first-hand, and we’re lucky to share Maclay day with someone who’s been there. Lillie’s record is pretty unprecedented, winning in the Ponies, Juniors, Young Riders, and even Derby Championships before the Maclay. She’s obviously a dynamic rider who could very well be one of our next Olympians. She is also one of the most composed young ladies I’ve met, and I think she’ll bring some great insight to a historic class that many people only dream of riding in, much less winning.”

With $850,000 in total prize money and an important World Cup Qualifier, the International Open Jumpers will compete for $530,000 in prize money, while the top rated hunter sections have a total purse of $205,000. Meanwhile, $100,000 is offered to the Amateur/Owner and Junior Jumpers.

The fifth edition of the National Horse Show in Lexington, Kentucky, is set for October 28 – November 2, 2014.

The show will once again be held at the Kentucky Horse Park.

National Horse Show Welcomes U-25 Jumper Championship

Nicole Bellissimo, Winner of the Artisan Farms Young Rider Semi Final at the Winter Equestrian Festival.

Lexington, KY – March 20, 2014 – Preparation for the 2014 National Horse Show is already underway, and this year the prestigious event will be welcoming a new U-25 Jumper Championship. Pending final approval by USEF, this exciting new addition will be open to all riders ages 16-25 that have participated in the qualifying events and will feature $65,000 in prize money.

The National Horse Show is scheduled for October 28 – November 2, 2014, in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park. The U-25 Jumper Championship will feature three rounds of competition similar to a World Cup Finals format, and will include a speed class, a jump-off class, and the finale, which will feature two rounds. All riders will go forward to the second competition and the first round of the Finale, but only the top 10 will return for the second round of the Finale.

The competition is open to all riders 16-25 that have not participated on a U.S. National Team at the CSIO5* level. The division will feature 25 riders, including any rider winning an individual medal in the Young Rider competition at the 2014 North American Junior and Young Rider Championship, the top five riders from the 2014 Artisan Farms Young Rider Series final standings and four “Wild Card” invitations to be issued by the organizer. The remaining spots will be filled based on the Rolex/USEF Show Jumping Ranking List as of the close of entries.

“The U-25 division is important because I bridges the gap between a Young Rider and a senior high performance rider,” explained DiAnn Langer, U.S. Show Jumping Young Rider Chef d’Equipe/Technical Advisor. “It gives those riders a place to go that allows them to gain the experience they need. In the U.S., we didn’t have a category for that previously; we decided to do what Europe does and add the U-25 category. I think it will be very popular for the advancement of our riders.”

Langer continued, “The excitement for us, shows such as the National with the status that they have stepped right up. For me, it’s a major announcement to the country that we are serious about this group of riders. It’s very important that they get the experience and exposure to progress with their careers.”

“We are so excited about the addition of the U-25 Championship to the National Horse Show,” concluded President Mason Phelps, Jr. “This is a very unique competition that offers an excellent opportunity for the riders that will be the future of our sport. Having them gain experience in this type of ‘World Cup’ format is very important for the development of the pipeline, and we are happy to be part of that.”

Lexington, KY – August 11, 2012 – When the Alltech National Horse Show makes it Kentucky debut in November, the first class production will be under the direction of one of the nation’s most trusted and experienced managements teams.

The Alltech National Horse Show, 128th Edition, will be held from November 2-6, 2011, at the beautiful, new Alltech Indoor Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. This year’s debut event is designated a CSI4*-W and the featured class, the $250,000 Alltech National Horse Show Grand Prix, will be a 2011/2012 FEI World Cup qualifying event. The ASPCA Maclay National Championships will take center stage on the final Sunday of the show.

Leading the production and heading up the management team are Co-Managers Hugh Kincannon and Leo Conroy.

Hugh Kincannon’s management resume is an impressive one.

Kincannon’s talents were evident early on in his career, as he developed a highly successful series of horse shows at his farm just outside of Cleveland, and then additional events in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1982, he joined forces with the Murphy family at the Kentucky Horse Park.

Since then, he and his team have been producing top rated USEF horse shows at the Kentucky Horse Park for over three decades. His spring and summer series of shows are always near sell-outs and are among the most popular and respected horse shows in the United States.

Ireland’s Louise Parkes Joins Phelps Media Group Team for Alltech National Horse Show

Louise Parkes, pictured aboard her pony after winning the Connemara class and the Reserve Supreme title at her Riding Clubs Championships in Ireland. Louise is pictured with her husband, noted equestrian photographer, Tony Parkes.

Wellington, Florida – June 30, 2011 – Phelps Media Group announced this afternoon that they have reached an agreement with distinguished equestrian writer Louise Parkes to join the PMG team for coverage of this year’s Alltech National Horse Show, 128th edition, to be held from November 2-6, 2011, at the beautiful new Alltech Indoor Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky.

“We’re bringing the entire Phelps Media Group team to Lexington for the Alltech National Horse Show,” said Phelps Media Group President Mason Phelps. “Louise Parkes has worked with PMG in the past and we felt this year’s event would be the perfect time for a reunion. To be honest, the show wouldn’t be complete without her. Her exceptional and wonderfully written reports from the equestrian world add a special international flair to our already first class coverage.”

Parkes reports on major equestrian competitions around the world, including the FEI Nations Cup series, the World Equestrian Games and the Olympic Games, for the FEI, the governing body of equestrian sports.

Married to photographer Tony Parkes, Louise inherited her passion for horses from her father who spent many of his happiest years in the hunting field. In between her busy cycle of assignments she competes at amateur level with the second-greatest love of her life – her Connemara ponies.

Having abandoned the camera for a pen back in 1994, her intuitive writing skills were quickly recognized by the FEI and she has been working on a contract basis for the governing body for equestrian sport ever since. She is also Equestrian Correspondent for the biggest-selling daily newspaper in Ireland, ‘The Irish Independent’, and her distinctive writing style has made her a much-sought-after contributor to top-selling equestrian publications. She has also worked in radio and TV and for media organizations and press rooms around the world. Last year, a book she co-wrote with author and commentator Michael Slavin, which details the history of the Irish Army Equitation School, was a big seller in the Christmas market.

Historic ASPCA Maclay National Championship Finds a Home in Kentucky

PHOTO: ©2010 Rebecca Walton - 2010 ASPCA Maclay National Champion Hayley Barnhill winners circle presentation

Lexington, Kentucky – May 17, 2011 – The 2011 Alltech National Horse Show has made the move to Lexington, Kentucky, and along with the glitz, the glamour, the prestige and the big money classes at this classic American tradition, the show will also feature one of the nation’s longest running and most coveted national championships, the ASPCA(R) (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) Maclay National Championship.

The Alltech National Horse Show, 128th edition, will be staged at the Alltech Arena at the world-renowned Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky, site of last year’s Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. The show runs from November 2-6, 2011, with the Maclay Finals taking center stage on the final Sunday.

Over the years the ASPCA Maclay Finals have been termed the “proving ground of champions” and the ultimate test for America’s young riders. And in the case of this classic test of horsemanship skills, that’s certainly more fact than hype.

“It’s the culmination of a long year of competition, it’s the final national championship, and with all of the history behind it, it’s just a great event to be a part of,” said top trainer Missy Clark, who, during the course of her stellar career as one of the nation’s very best teachers, has sent nine different ASPCA Maclay National Champions to the ring. “If you look back at the names on the Maclay trophy, you see so many names of riders that have gone on to do great things in their careers. If you can get through the Maclay Finals, you can go on and do anything. If you win that class, you’ve got the goods; you’ve got the ingredients to do great things.”
