Boekelo, The Netherlands – Competition at the Military Boekelo CCIO3* came to a close Sunday with two riders of the Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team contesting the show jumping phase. While there were clear rounds, rails were coming down throughout the day over Jos Brinkman’s course. Boyd Martin and Trading Aces were the top finishers for the U.S. in the field of 64 combinations that moved on to the final phase of competition.

Martin (Cochranville, Pa.) and Trading Aces LLC’s nine-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding had a lovely round with an unfortunate rail at the C element of the triple, adding four faults to their score. The pair ended the competition with a score of 68.0 to finish in 28th place. The Military Boekelo CCIO3* marked the first time Trading Aces represented the U.S., demonstrating much promise for the future with Martin.

“It was a disappointing result for the U.S. However, the three horses that competed are young, class, talented horses and will benefit in the future from this trip,” commented Martin. “I believe we were a team of quality riders that did not execute at this event. We return home with an understanding of where we came up short. Thank you to the USEF for the opportunity to represent the U.S.”

Elizabeth Halliday-Sharp (East Sussex, United Kingdom) and her own Fernhill By Night also added four faults to their score after having a rail at 4A. She and the 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding finished with a score of 91.4 for 52nd place. The pair stepped up to the plate representing the U.S. for the first time in an international team competition, all in Fernhill By Night’s first attempt at the CCI3* level.

In the final leg of the 2013 FEI Nations Cup Eventing series, Germany won the team competition with a score of 148.6. The Land Rover U.S. Eventing team finished in seventh place with a score of 1159.40. Great Britain came away with 2013 FEI Nations Cup Eventing series title.

New Zealand’s Lizzie Brown and Henton Attorney General took home top honors with a final score of 39.8.

Martin Leads the Way for the U.S. at Military Boekelo CCIO3*

Boekelo, The Netherlands – The Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team experienced mixed fortunes on Sue Benson’s cross country course on Saturday at the Military Boekelo CCIO3*. As is customary at Boekelo, the Dutch weather and deep going proved extremely influential as the leaderboard saw an utter shake-up. Following the conclusion of the second phase, Boyd Martin and Trading Aces lead the way for the United States.

Martin (Cochranville, Pa.) and Trading Aces LLC’s nine-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding produced a steady clear round on Saturday. As the third-to-last combination to set out on the testing track the Richland Park CIC3* winners encountered extremely deteriorated footing and therefore collected 18 time faults. The pair heads into the final show jumping phase on a score of 64 in 35th place.

The first U.S. combination out on course was Elizabeth Halliday-Sharp (East Sussex, United Kingdom) and her own Fernhill By Night. The 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding was enjoying a successful trip in his first CCI3* but a late run-out at 21C meant the combination would collect 20 jumping penalties and 15.6 time faults. They stand on an overnight total of 87.4 in 54th place.

Lauren Kieffer (Middleburg, Va.) and Team Rebecca LLC’s 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare Veronica were also representing the U.S. in team competition at Boekelo. The pair was enjoying a nearly foot-perfect round until they also ran into trouble at 21 resulting in a fall at the A element and elimination for Kieffer.

The U.S. stands in ninth place in the Team standings following the cross country on a score of 1151.4. Germany maintained the lead and head into the show jumping on a score of 124.6.

New Zealand’s Lizzie Brown and Henton Attorney General lead the individual standings on a score of 35.8.

Land Rover US Eventing Team Stands Sixth Following Dressage at Military Boekelo CCIO3*

Boyd Martin and Trading Aces (Libby Law Photography)

Boekelo, The Netherlands – The final two riders from the Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team completed their dressage tests on Friday at the Military Boekelo CCIO3* in a deluge of rain. Lauren Kieffer and Veronica were the first pair in the ring for the U.S., earning a mark of 47.4, while Boyd Martin was the third-to-last competitor down centerline scoring a 46 with Trading Aces. The third pair of the U.S. effort in Boekelo, Elizabeth Halliday-Sharp and Fernhill by Night, performed its test on Thursday, scoring 51.8. Following the first phase of competition, the U.S. holds sixth place in the team standings on a total of 145.2, with the team from Germany heading the field on a score of 123.4. Sweden’s Niklas Lindback and Cendrillon lead the individual standings on a score of 33.

Kieffer (Middleburg, Va.) and Team Rebecca LLC’s 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare produced solid trot and canter work to slot into 41st individually following the first phase. The talented combination put forth a solid effort throughout the test despite the muddy and less than ideal conditions. Veronica became slightly unsettled in the walk, resulting in scores dipping for the halt and reinback in an otherwise professional European debut for the pair.

Martin (Cochranville, Pa.) leads the U.S. effort following the dressage after riding Trading Aces into 28th place. Trading Aces, LLC’s nine-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding was ridden at the prestigious Dressage at Devon competition two weeks ago by Martin’s wife, Silva, and benefitted from the experience as he produced consistent work on Friday to score 46. The Richland Park CIC3* winners were undeterred by declining ring conditions as one of the final pairs of the day and on Saturday will look to showcase the jumping form that has helped them secure numerous top finishes in North America.

“The conditions really deteriorated today, but I think they all rode exceptionally well,” said USEF Eventing Team Coach David O’Connor, who believes the weather conditions will have a major effect on Saturday’s cross country. “I think they will all attack the course in the same way. We’ll see what the conditions are; a big thing will be the footing and weather. The horses are good mud horses and everyone plans to attack the course.”

Halliday-Sharp, standing in 60th place, will be the first U.S. competitor to tackle Sue Benson’s ten-and-a-half minute track on Saturday, setting off at 11:30am local time. Kieffer will head out at 2:10pm and Martin will anchor the U.S. effort, starting on the cross country at 3:54pm.

Halliday-Sharp Kicks Off Competition for Land Rover U.S. Eventing Team at Military Boekelo CCIO3*

Elizabeth Halliday-Sharp and Fernhill By Night (Libby Law Photography)

Lexington, Ky. – The first U.S. horse-and-rider combination performed their dressage test Thursday for the FEI Nations Cup competition at the Military Boekelo CCIO3*. Elizabeth Halliday-Sharp and Fernhill By Night took to the dressage arena in front of the judging panel of David Lee (IRL), Andrew Bennie (NZL), and Ciska Van Meggelen-Peek (NED) at the historic venue in Boekelo, The Netherlands.

Halliday-Sharp (East Sussex, United Kingdom) rode a lovely test with her own 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding, scoring a 51.8 and putting them in 28th place. The pair had a minor error coming down the centerline at the beginning when Fernhill By Night swapped leads, but otherwise they had a flowing test. Even though Halliday-Sharp and Fernhill by Night are representing the U.S. for the first time in an international team competition, they handled the pressure well, especially in the large atmosphere at Boekelo. This also marks the pair’s first attempt at the CCI3* level.

“I was quite pleased with him today. He is very green at the three-star level, but he tried really hard,” said Halliday-Sharp of Fernhill By Night, who looks to have a bright future. “Unfortunately he threw in flying change on centerline which didn’t put us off to a great start but I was quite pleased overall. We have some tidying up to do but he did some of the best trot work he’s ever done today.”

Following the first day of dressage, Kenki Sato (JPN) and Chippieh lead the field with a 38.2. Michael Jung (GER) and fischerRocana FST sit in second place with a 39.0, while Geoffroy Soullez (FRA) and Madiran du Liot*HN lie in third place on a score of 39.2.

Dressage continues tomorrow for the remaining 50 combinations of the total 104 that are contesting the event, which serves as the final leg of the 2013 FEI Nations Cup Eventing series. Lauren Kieffer and Veronica will perform their dressage test on Friday at 11:55am local time, followed by Boyd Martin and Trading Aces at 4:18pm local time.

Land Rover US Eventing Team Prepared for Military Boekelo CCIO3*

Elizabeth Halliday-Sharp and Fernhill By Night (Libby Law Photography)

Lexington, Ky. – The U.S. horse-and-rider combinations are poised for the FEI Nations Cup competition at the Military Boekelo CCIO3*, October 10-13, 2013 in Boekelo, The Netherlands. Elizabeth Halliday-Sharp, Lauren Kieffer, and Boyd Martin make up the team representing the U.S. Following the first horse inspection, 104 combinations are ready to contest the challenging three-day event, which is the seventh and final leg in the 2013 FEI Nations Cup Eventing series. The U.S. has been drawn as the ninth team in the order of go out of the 11 countries competing in the Nations Cup.

Halliday-Sharp (East Sussex, United Kingdom) and her own Fernhill By Night will represent the U.S. for the first time in an international team competition. She and the 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding finished second in the Brightling Park CIC2* earlier this year and recently finished 12th in the Ballindenisk CIC3*.

Kieffer (Middleburg, Va.) will ride Team Rebecca, LLC’s Veronica, also representing the U.S. for the first time. She and the 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare have had a stellar year, solidifying their partnership after Kieffer took over the ride on Veronica this year. The pair won the CHC International CIC3* in May and took home first-place honors again in an Advanced division at the Plantation Field Horse Trials.

“I am very excited. It feels really cool,” Kieffer said of representing the U.S. “It really didn’t kick in until the jog when they announced the U.S.”

“She’s great,” Kieffer commented about Veronica. “She is very fresh. She shipped in great. We have our work cut out for us this weekend.”

Boyd Martin (Cochranville, Pa.) will be the anchor rider for the U.S. team on Trading Aces, LLC’s Trading Aces. He and the nine-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding seem to be peaking at just the right time. The pair won the Richland Park CIC3* in August and just finished sixth in the Plantation Field CIC3*.

The fourth member named to the Land Rover U.S. eventing team, Marilyn Little (Frederick, Md.), had to withdraw her mount, Team Tabasco’s 13-year-old Trakehner gelding RF Tabasco, due to minor veterinary reasons.

Halliday-Sharp and Fernhill By Night will be the first U.S. pair to perform their dressage test, going at 2:49pm local time. Kieffer and Veronica will go on Friday at 11:55am local time, followed by Martin and Trading Aces at 4:18pm local time.
