Martien Van Der Hoeven Wins $5,000 Open Jumper Speed at Kentucky Summer Classic

Lexington, Ky. – August 1, 2017 – Martien Van Der Hoeven wasted no time in making sure that he had a successful week at the Kentucky Summer Classic. The professional topped the list of competitors in the $5,000 Open Jumper 1.40m Speed class aboard Corleone at the Kentucky Horse Park. During the morning classes, David Beisel continued his winning streak from last week by winning the 7-year-old Developing Jumpers with Harlow Investments’ For Sunday.

For Van Der Hoeven, traveling to Kentucky from his home base at Augusta Pines Farm, 30 minutes outside of Houston, Texas, is always a big undertaking. The professional has had a successful string of shows at the Kentucky Horse Park over the years and his appreciates the opportunity to compete in such an iconic venue. Last week during the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, Van Der Hoeven had several top placing in both the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic and the $50,000 Rood and Riddle Grand Prix on his grey gelding Zerro Leone. During the Kentucky Summer Classic, Van Der Hoeven is showing the 10-year-old KWPN gelding Corleone who is owned by Mary and Catherine Tyree and normally is trained by North Run Stables from Warren, Vermont. Van der Hoeven credits the great training Corleone receives at North Run with his ability to take over the mount with such success.

Another winner in Rolex Stadium during competition was David Beisel and For Sunday, a 7-year-old KWPN mare owned by Harlow Investment Enterprises. The pair won the 7-Year-Old Developing Jumper class, presented by Spy Coast Farm. Beisel believes deeply in the value of the Developing Jumper Series and has even used it to train one of his current grand prix mounts, Ammeretto, to success in the grand prix ring. In 2016, For Sunday won the Young Jumper Championship Midwestern League Finals and Beisel is hopeful for a repeat performance from the mare this year.

Professional Hunters Kick Off Second Week of Kentucky Summer Horse Show

As the second week of the Kentucky Summer Horse Shows begins at the Kentucky Horse Park, professional hunter competitors are eager to secure a division championship. During the combined Green Hunter 3’9 and High Performance class, three different horse and rider combinations earned blue ribbons.

In the first over fences class of the division, Samantha Schaefer and the 8-year-old KWPN gelding In the Know, who is owned by her sister, Madeline Schaefer, came away with the win. The pair arrived early in Kentucky from Westminster, Maryland to prepare for the Pre-Green Incentive and International Derby Finals later in August. Other top hunters took their turn in the beautiful Stonelea Ring and coming into second place in the first over fences was Erica Quinn aboard CF Partners’ Celtic Fire, a 10-year-old KWPN stallion. Emma Wujek and Raylyn Farms, Inc.’s RF Remarkable, an 8-year-old Oldenburg gelding, received the yellow ribbon.

After returning to the ring for the second over fences, topped the leaderboard. Early in 2016, Celtic Fire was competing in grand prixs, but they decided he would flourish in the derby ring. After only four months of hunter training, the pair won the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby at the Chicago Hunter Derby in 2016. Quinn, who is based in Brookeville, Maryland, wanted to use this week at the Kentucky Summer Classic to get ready for the international hunter derby later in two weeks.

For the under saddle class, Brandon Gibson won with Lisa Chaney’s Cristal, 7-year-old Westphalian mare. Quinn and Celtic Fire placed second and Schaefer on In The Know rounded out the top three.

Six Bar a Success at the Atlanta Summer Classic Week II

What a night! The Classic Company’s inaugural $10,000 Six Bar class was the talk of the horse show community Friday night at the Georgia International Horse Park which took place center stage in the Olympic Arena.

The event coincided with the Annual Outback Steakhouse Charity Dinner to benefit the Hope Clinic. The Hope Clinic was founded in 2002 by Dr. William Martin to provide an affordable alternative to the hospital emergency room for the primary care medical needs of the uninsured. The clinic is a vital part of Gwinnett’s healthcare safety net and supplies over half of the available charitable primary care capacity in the county. Dr. Martin and the team of providers at the Hope Clinic specialize in internal medicine and chronic care diagnosis. The Classic Company has supported the Hope Clinic for the past 8 years. “This is an incredibly worthy group. They provide a tremendous amount of services to the local community and provide the less fortunate with needed medical services. The Classic Company is one of their largest fundraising groups and we are so happy to work with them and help make a difference.”

“The six bar class was amazing. There must have been 1,000 at the grand prix. Literally everyone at the show was watching!” commented Classic Company President Bob Bell.

“The class is a straight line of six fences. We started the first fence at 3’9. As each rider went clean, the fences were raised. We did four rounds and ended with the last fence at 5’10”. We ended up with a three way tie and the crowd just loved it!” said Bell.

The three victors were Martien Van Der Hoeven of Spring, Texas in the irons of Courtney DeHechavarria’s Easy Touch 4, Michael Murphy of Apopka, Florida riding Suzanne Dennis’ Bunny Hop, and Derek Peterson of Archer, Florida in the irons of Madddie Skimming’s Cassevel.

Paul McCrea of Alpharetta, Georgia rode Krista Jones’ Diamond DeLuxe and made it to the fourth round. But eight jump faults would keep them from the winner’s circle.

Van Der Hoeven also rode Augusta Pines Farm’s Nuateloe. The team was out after Round 3 saw them with four jump faults. Round 3 also claimed Sherry Hill of Cordele, Georgia on her own Bellami and Randii Goble of Friendsville, Tennessee aboard Icon Sporthorses, LLC’s Queen of Calla, both with four jump faults at the last fence. Round two spared all of the horse and riders and round one claimed Mary Katherine Hargreaves and her own Jump Start with eight jump faults.

During the event, the Annual Silent Auction also took place for those looking to make a win outside of the ring in the sold out tent. Outback Steakhouse served ribs, chicken breasts, Caesar salad and deserts. “The food was delicious and everyone had a great time,” said Bell.

$5,000 Open Welcome Jumpers

Thursday night the Open Jumpers saw 29 take to the course designed by internationally known course designer, Steve Stephens of Palmetto, Florida, but only 10 went clean. Stephens has designed courses for the Olympics and the Pan Am Games. He is one of the most well-known course designers in the world.

Of the ten that went clean, Derek Petersen’s Titus 2:11, ridden by Jared Petersen of Archer, Florida, won the class with a double clean round and jump off time of 31.013 seconds, well within the time allowed of 47 seconds. Trapatoni, owned by Billie Dorouet and ridden by David Jennings of Franklin, Tennessee, came in second after turning in double clear rounds and a jump off time in 32.06 seconds. Third place finisher was David Blake of Parkland, Florida aboard Doma Sue, owned by Pine Hollow Farm, after turning in double clear rounds and a jump off time of 33.221 seconds.
