Kent Farrington, Nayel Nassar Emerge as Champions on Day 2 of Longines Masters of LA

Top three, from right, Kevin Staut, Nayel Nassar and Samuel Parot.

LOS ANGELES (Oct. 1, 2016) – Day two of the Longines Masters of Los Angeles was nothing short of action-packed as Nayel Nassar and Lordan finished on top after besting the field of competitors in the Longines Speed Challenge. The duo raced against the clock and finished with an impressive time of 63.47 seconds. Kevin Staut and Samuel Parot rounded out the winner’s podium at second and third place with times of 63.90 and 65.18, respectively. Notable attendees who witnessed one of the fastest competitions in equestrian sports included Kaley Cuoco and Karl Kook, Nick Bateman, Rocky Barnes, Johnny and Laeticia Hallyday, Guillaume Canet and James Caan.

Unique to the Longines Masters Series, the Longines Speed Challenge emphasizes the swiftness of the horses as each fault is only penalized by 2 seconds as opposed to the standard 4. With a fallen rail meaning a lesser consequence, riders and their horses focus on getting through the course as fast as possible.

Longines, the Title Partner and Official Timekeeper of the event, facilitated a conversation between elite equestrian and daughter of former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Georgina Bloomberg, and reigning Olympic slalom gold medal winner Mikaela Shiffrin. The two athletes discussed the importance of timekeeping and precision in show jumping and alpine skiing. Later, Shiffrin joined Bloomberg for a traditional walking of the course to learn how the equestrian athlete assesses and prepares for the exact spacing between and height of the jumps ahead of a class.

Riders and horses of all levels found success throughout the day at the Longines Masters of Los Angeles. Kent Farrington and Creedance took home the Champagne Barons de Rothschild Trophy in the afternoon’s CSI 5* Masters class. In the Prestige CSI 2* playing field, Jamie Barge and Luebbo claimed the Hermès Sellier Trophy, while Estelle Navet and Revann de Lojou claimed the Jonathan Adler Trophy. The National class finished with Sarah Ryan and Costa de Baugy Z winning the Grand Prix Relay Trophy, and Alyce Bittar besting her sister, Amelie Bittar, to take home the Just One Eye Trophy.

In addition to a weekend of world-class equestrian competition, guests of the Longines Masters of Los Angeles were also treated to the thrill of high-speed indoor polo when the La Martina Polo Exhibition took the ring. Hosted by La Martina, a leader in developing new high-tech equipment for the sport of Polo, with support from the Santa Barbara Polo Club, the fast pace and physical contact of the game, the strength and maneuverability of the horses, and the skill and accuracy of the players, provided an enthralling spectacle for all Longines Masters fans.

Also on Friday at the Longines Masters of Los Angeles, Santi Serra returned for an encore performance with his Sercam Show, demonstrating the beauty and grace of the horses as well as the bond and trust that they’ve cultivated. Throughout the day, guests were treated to live musical performances by the Pendleton Sisters, DJ Jeremie, and Reverend Tall Tree.

ABOUT EEM

EEM CEO and Founder Christophe Ameeuw and his team have set no less a goal than to reinvent the sport of show jumping. For over ten years they have been dedicated to bringing equestrian sports to the international front stage. Inspired by the legendary tournaments of the tennis Grand Slam, EEM gathers under one roof the best of show jumping, entertainment and lifestyle experience. 2009 was a crucial milestone for EEM with its revival of the “Jumping de Paris” and the creation of the Gucci Paris Masters. EEM then set off to conquer new continents, with an Asian edition which took place in Hong Kong in 2013, followed in 2014 by the first American stage of the Longines Masters in Los Angeles. In 2015 the intercontinental trilogy of which EEM is the creator, owner and organizer, became the Longines Masters “Grand Slam Indoor of Show Jumping”.

ABOUT OUR PHILOSOPHY
« We Ride the World »™

The international signature of the Longines Masters “We Ride the World” was introduced last season by EEM, notably featured along with the documentary series “The Ride of My Life,” both of which echo the philosophy developed by EEM for the Longines Masters:

Said Christophe Ameeuw: “If equestrian sports are a matter of taste, there is still a consensus that no one can question: the beauty of the horse transcends the sportive exploit, and beyond the extraordinary performance of the riders, conveys a feeling of wonder.

“And this is doubtlessly what makes show jumping universal, transcending countries, cultures and populations. Its treasured values do not need rules to exist. They are shared without effort as a testimonial. There is something profoundly captivating in the competition, like a theatrical play that mesmerises and transports you.

“In a world that is becoming more and more digital, the experience of the live spectacle is a rare and enviable commodity. All over the world sports events gather the crowds and unlock passions, inspired by social networks as symbols of a generation that is eager to share. This emotion, this dream, this enchantment that we bring to our ‘Masters’ is our mission at EEM. Each new season of Longines Masters Series, ‘Grand Slam Indoor of Show Jumping’, across three continents, three cultures, three emblematic cities, Los Angeles, Paris, and Hong Kong, we carry the values of our sport as an antidote to the difficulties of our time.”

Longines Masters of Los Angeles Announces Class Schedule with Four Days of Competition

Photo: Uliano Vezzani.

Uliano Vezzani Named the Official Course Designer of the Second Season of the Longines Masters Series

Los Angeles, CA. July 19, 2016 – Kicking off the Longines Masters Series season II, the American leg of the Grand Slam Indoor of show jumping – the Longines Masters of Los Angeles – will host the world’s top riders and horses to compete during four days of high-powered, fast-paced equestrian sport, September 29 – October 2, 2016. Highlights of this year’s event will include the Longines Speed Challenge, Gold Cup, Pro-Am Style and Competition for Charity, and more, culminating with Sunday’s Longines Grand Prix.

Courses will be designed by Uliano Vezzani, who has been named the official course designer of the Longines Masters Series’ second season across Los Angeles, Paris, and Hong Kong, bringing new challenges for the riders.

“I am proud and thankful for EEM giving me the opportunity to continue to build the brand of this prestigious and recognized circuit. This new adventure can only enrich my experience and stimulate me to make things better,” said Vezzani. “I have a very positive impression so far and look forward to being integrated into the ‘Longines Masters Family.’”

Friday will focus on speed with the Longines Speed Challenge, considered to be the world’s fastest class. Created in 2010 by EEM, the Longines Speed Challenge takes places over a 1.45m course, combining speed, agility, power and precision of both the riders and horses. Faults are less heavily penalized than in other classes, giving free rein to speed, resulting in an event full of emotion and suspense. Vezzani’s course for the competition will be the same for all three events of season II, allowing riders a unique opportunity to improve their skills throughout the series and to become the fastest rider in the world!

Saturday is the day of glamour, entertainment and philanthropy with the Pro-Am Style and Competition for Charity and the Gold Cup.

The Pro-Am Style and Competition for Charity features teams of amateur and professional riders, who each dress up and compete to raise money for charity. Each team will be judged on the number of penalties over the fences, the team’s style and elegance, as well as the horse’s style. Last year, the competition featured celebrity riders including Kaley Cuoco, Jennifer Gates, and Hannah Selleck, as well as 2016 U.S. Olympic team member Kent Farrington, Edwina Tops-Alexander, and more.

The Gold Cup is a technical 1.55m (5’) class based on the “winning round” format, which consists of two rounds with no jump-off. Instead, the second round invites back the top ten riders from the first round, and the initial scores are discarded so that everyone starts from scratch.

Sunday is about elite performances with the Longines Grand Prix, the grand finale of each leg of the Longines Masters Series. An Olympic-level class with a course featuring jumps up to 1.60m in height, the Longines Grand Prix will require perfectly-trained horses and experienced riders to succeed on the course full of tough sequences and double and triple combinations. Riders in the Longines Grand Prix at the Longines Masters of Los Angeles will be the first in the world to compete for the new Super Grand Slam Bonus of 2.25 Million Euros, which will be awarded for a triple consecutive Longines Grand Prix victory starting in Los Angeles, then Paris and Hong Kong in the same season or The Grand Slam Bonus of 1 Million Euros for three successive victories in the Longines Grand Prix (ex: Paris > Hong Kong > Los Angeles, or Hong Kong > Los Angeles > Paris).

Alongside the major 5* classes, the Longines Masters of Los Angeles will also welcome the USA’s best junior, amateur and professional riders for the Prestige Trophy and National Trophy classes, where the stars of tomorrow will rub shoulders with world champions of today.

The warmup paddock, uniquely located in the heart of the Prestige Village, offers spectators the unique opportunity to discover the world’s best 5* riders and witness the future stars of tomorrow warming up beginning on Thursday and continuing throughout the competition. This year the Longines Masters of Los Angeles will also include Masters Classes, giving amateur riders the unique privilege of training with some of the best riders in the world. Spectators and fans will also be able to meet the riders through autograph sessions, meet-and-greets, and more.

Following the success of polo at the Hong Kong leg of the Longines Masters Series, the Los Angeles event will welcome the sport for a match between esteemed United States riders. This blend of equestrian sports will help to unite the disciplines and teach show jumping spectators about the excitement of polo.

Event passes are now on sale at http://www.longinesmasters.com/en/ticketing to secure a seat for “the number one sow jumping event in the USA” according to North American Rider Group.

Marco Kutscher and Van Gogh Claim Top Prize in the Longines Grand Prix

Marco Kutscher and Van Gogh. Photos: McCool Photos for EEM.

Los Angeles, CA. October 4, 2015 – Four days of champion caliber show jumping action at the Longines Masters of Los Angeles culminated in Sunday afternoon’s Longines Grand Prix. Thirty-six of the world’s best riders competed in the grand finale of the American leg of the Longines Masters series for $450,000 in prize money, the largest purse in any United States indoor competition. Marco Kutscher and Van Gogh stunned the crowd with a jump-off time of 37.04 seconds to become the first ever winner of the new Longines Masters Series Trophy.

Created by renowned Belgian course designer Luc Musette, the 1.60m course was extremely technical and demanding with 13 obstacles. Seven horse and rider couples qualified for the jump-off, including 2012 Olympic individual gold medalist Steve Guerdat and Kavalier, Saturday’s two-class champion Patrice Delaveau on Lacrimoso, and more. John Whitaker and Argento entered the ring with hopes to claim the Masters Grand Slam Super Bonus following their victory in the Longines Grand Prix of Hong Kong, but were unlucky with a rail down.

World Number 1 Scott Brash’s run of dominance on the international stage looked set to continue as he and Hello M’Lady completed the jump-off with a time of 37.93 seconds. The American audience went wild when Kent Farrington and Voyeur came a mere 0.15 seconds from knocking Scott off his throne. Last to enter the ring, Marco Kutscher and Van Gogh had a masterpiece ride to claim top spot on the podium.

“I had a very good start to the jump off; the second part was maybe a little bit slower but anyway I’m super pleased with my horse because for the rest of the weekend nobody realized that I was here. So I took my chance and I’m very pleased, and very happy to go home tonight,” said Kutscher. “Last year I was here, and I think this year, the crowd, the spectators, were even more than last year; the atmosphere is great and it’s fun to ride here. I would like to come back next year to see all you guys.”

“I’m absolutely delighted with the horse,” Brash said, before hurrying off to the airport to fly to China. “I was just annoyed at myself that I didn’t do a smoother round. Marco’s horse was so smooth and it was a joy to watch really if you weren’t sitting where I was. All credit to Marco; he’s done a great round.”

Earlier in the day, Michelle Kerivan and Colin won the Écuries d’Écaussinnes Grand Prix with a time of 40.37 seconds in a five-rider jump-off. Hannah Selleck and Barla were victorious in the Canadian Pacific Grand Prix, winning a three-rider jump-off in 36.38 seconds.

Spectators for the day included Bill Gates, Kaley Cuoco, Fred Savage, Frankie Muniz, Alison Sweeney, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Michael Mann, Bo Derek, National Anthem singer Pia Toscano, and more. The heart-pounding action of the 2015/2016 Longines Masters season continues this winter with the Longines Masters of Paris, December 3-6, 2015.

Los Angeles, CA. October 3, 2015 – Saturday night at the Longines Masters of Los Angeles was the epitome of glamour, prestige, and fun with top level show jumping and entertainment at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The evening featured two renowned classes: the Gucci Gold Cup for the first time at the American leg of the series and a signature event in the Longines Masters, the Charity Pro-Am Style & Competition.

Bill Gates, Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa cheered on their daughters along with Camilla Belle, Jeannie Mai, Carly Steel, Alison Sweeney, Jean Claude Van Damme and many more throughout the day.

The inaugural Gucci Gold Cup at the Longines Masters of Los Angeles showcased the power and glamour of the sport as 36 of the world’s best riders jumped the course designed by Luc Musette. Already a favorite at the Hong Kong leg of the Longines Masters series, the Gucci Gold Cup brings the best of show jumping to the American audience. World Number 1 Scott Brash, U.S. Number 1 Beezie Madden, and many more joined Longines Masters of Hong Kong Gucci Gold Cup champion John Whitaker in the ring. After a winning round of 12 competitors, French rider Patrice Delaveau and Carinjo HDC claimed top prize with a time of with 35.83 seconds, with McLain Ward and HH Carlos Z in very close second with a time of 35.85 seconds, followed by Edwina Tops-Alexander and Lintea Tequila in third in 36.30 seconds.

The Charity Pro-Am Style & Competition was a unique team class composed of one professional rider and one amateur rider, riding for charity. Each of the eight teams dressed up in costumes of their choice as they rode to a music selection complimenting their chosen theme. The team with the best style was decided by a celebrity jury composed of James Bond girl Denise Richards, actress Perrey Reeves from Entourage, and KTLA anchor Sam Rubin. Each team was judged on the number of penalties over the fences, the team’s style and elegance, as well as the horse’s style.

Kaley Cuoco and teammate Tracy Wade were crowned the Charity Pro-Am Style & Competition winners dressed as Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader to benefit Ride On. Jennifer Gates and Jack Towell embodied Wizard of Oz characters for Thrive Animal Rescue, and Hannah Selleck and Jane Richard Philips were Alice in Wonderland and the Queen of Hearts on behalf of Longines and Just World International.

The eight teams included:

  • Jack Towell and Olympe de Brecey and Jennifer Gates and Cadence for Thrive Animal Rescue
  • Hillary Ridland and Zilliam Rose and Mary Frances Looke and Labors Wonderboy for Park Place Foundation

Delaveau, riding 11-year-old Lacrimoso 3 HDC and Lauren Hough, on 11-year-old Cornet 39, were the two riders to jump a second time.

The Longines Masters of Los Angeles will conclude on Sunday afternoon with the much-anticipated Longines Grand Prix. John Whitaker from Great Britain has journeyed to Los Angeles for the first time since 1984 in an attempt to claim the first ever Masters Grand Slam Super Bonus.

Bertram Allen and Quiet Easy 4 Claim Top Prize in the Longines Speed Challenge

Los Angeles, CA. October 2, 2015 – Action at the second day at the Longines Masters of Los Angeles culminated with Friday night’s Longines Speed Challenge. Bertram Allen and Quiet Easy 4 raced against the clock with a remarkable time of 58.91 seconds. Scott Brash and Piergiorgio Bucci rounded out the podium, Brash with a time of 58.96 seconds on Hello Annie and Piergiorgio Bucci and Cuarta with a time of 62.94 seconds.

The energy was palpable as the microphoned jumps enhanced the sounds of the ring. Every spectator felt the electricity emanating between horse and rider as they raced around the course. 2014 Longines Masters of Los Angeles Longines Speed Challenge winner Jane Richard Philips returned in an attempt to reestablish her dominance but couldn’t keep pace with the 20-year-old Irish phenom.

The only speed competition of its kind in the world, the Longines Speed Challenge with $130,000 in prize money is a staple of all three Longines Masters events, in Paris, Hong Kong, and Los Angeles. The emotion and suspense were palpable as top-ranked international show jumpers raced through a course designed by renowned Belgian designer Luc Musette. With the launch of the Longines Masters series, the Longines Speed Challenge introduces the new 1.45m course design that will be carried to the Paris and Hong Kong events, challenging the riders to improve their time at each leg.

The Longines Speed Challenge format created by EEM emphasizes speed by and precision, as each fault is penalized by 2 seconds instead of the standard 4. A fallen rail needn’t be cripping, therefore, and riders can still hope to make up these two penalty seconds by going just a little bit faster.

“Scott Brash’s round was unbelievable,” said Allen in reaction to watching the World Number 1’s pace-setting round. “My horse really tried.”

John Whitaker rode to victory on Argento in the Prix Airbus, the day’s first 5* level competition. He beat Edwina Tops-Alexander and Lintea Tequila by a mere 0.59 seconds in the jump-off. The win adds to his recent success in the series as the winner of the Gucci Gold Cup and Longines Grand Prix at the Longines Masters of Hong Kong. Whitaker and Argento are in great form and heating up in time to compete in Sunday’s Longines Grand Prix in hopes of winning the second leg of the Masters Grand Slam Super Bonus of €500,000.

“With the way he [Argento] jumped today, I should give him the day off. He’s a fighter; he’s tough. He wants to do the job, and that’s 95 percent of the battle. You know he’s going to jump the jumps,” said Whitaker.

Recent “Veep” Emmy winner Tony Hale, actor Kaley Cuoco, director Steven Spielberg, rock and roll legend Bruce Springsteen and his wife Patti Scialfa and more cheered on their favorite riders from the Masters Club. Steffen Peters performed a dressage demonstration, and families enjoyed the first day of the Kids’ Village with face painting, a mini horseless jump course, and ponies.

The world’s best international show jumpers will continue to compete at the Los Angeles Convention Center throughout the weekend.
