Fall Festivities Bring Record Attendance and Donations for Kids Cancer Foundation

Wellington, Florida (November 3, 2016) – This fall season the Wellington and Palm Beach communities have continued a legacy of excellence in bringing resources and funding to the Kids Cancer Foundation of South Florida. Dedicated to providing hope and support to patients and families battling childhood cancer, the Kids Cancer Foundation received record donations and attendance at three charity events: the Wellington 10 Miler, 5k and Fun Run, Wicked at The Wanderer’s Club, and the KCF Fall Festival at St. Peter’s Methodist Church.

From its beginnings over a decade ago, the Wellington 10 Miler has grown to encompass not only a great fitness, family, and charity event, but also a source of remembrance, resources, and ultimately hope for those affected or enduring the plight of childhood cancer. Organized by the Wellington Runner’s Club, this year’s event took place on Sunday, October 23, 2016 and included the 10 Miler, Sebastian’s 5k, and Kids Fun Run. Its course wove through the scenic tropical landscape of the Wellington Environmental Preserve at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Everglades Habitat off Flying Cow Road, and at its completion set numerous milestones, including record attendance and a record donation for the Kids Cancer Foundation.

Sebastian’s 5k is named in memory of Sebastian Sarmiento, a 9-year-old who bravely battled cancer and endured more in his brief life than any one person should. His unwavering hope and courage in the face of incredible hardship is a reflection of the daily battle waged by the children of the Kids Cancer Foundation, and the funds raised by Sebastian’s 5k and the entire event go directly to help other families in the south Florida community who are facing the same battle and make their fight a bit easier.

With the 10 miler designed as a fall tune up race for those training for full and half marathons and the Sebastian’s 5k Run/Walk appealing to the more casual running enthusiast, the event brought in a family element with the Kids Fun Run, which took place after the 10 Miler. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office also designated Sebastian’s 5k as their Couch to 5k event, a program designed to boost fitness and overall health. The PBSO’s involvement brought droves of runners to Wellington for the event, contributing to its overall success. And, representing Wellington’s own choice sport, a few famous equestrian names could be found on the roster, including Argentina’s Nic Roldan. Roldan, who is an internationally successful polo star and Ambassador for the Kids Cancer Foundation, ran in Sebastian’s 5k.

“Last weekend’s race was a blast like always,” said Roldan. “It’s an event my friends and I always look forward to participating in. The weather was perfect and the turnout was huge. Biggest yet. The KCF family has become part of my life, and it is such a blessing and honor to be able to help support and raise funds for children in need.”

For those looking for a little less fitness, more entertainment, and equitable charity, the Young Professionals of Wellington hosted its fourth annual Wicked at the Wanderer’s Club Halloween gala which also gave revelers the chance to make a difference in the lives of those affected by childhood cancer. Hosted at the spectacular Wanderer’s Club on October 29, 2016, over 250 attendees appeared decked out in spectacular costumes to dance the night away, including the Kids Cancer Busters, a take on the famous Ghostbusters. The generosity of this Halloween themed night no doubt will mean more support and resources for the patients and families of the Kids Cancer Foundation.

The previous Friday, October 28, the KCF’s busy schedule also took them to St. Peter’s Methodist Church, where they hosted a fun night of dancing, costumes, and candy for the kids and families. Star Wars, princesses, and superheroes were the costumes of choice, and the party enjoyed a DJ to keep everyone dancing, a bounce house, arts and crafts, a few golden retrievers (from?), food and of course plenty of candy to add to the spirit of Halloween. Nic Roldan and Darren Marotta also stopped by to have some fun, and during the celebration the Chasentailz Fishing Tournament presented the Kids Cancer Foundation with a $10,000 check from their event, which took place in September, making October a record year for the Foundation and its beneficiaries.

The Kids Cancer Foundation of South Florida is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity that provides hope and support to local children and families battling childhood cancer. Their multifaceted program addresses patient family needs that range from financial assistance to psychological support and art programs, designed to ease the mental, financial, and emotional strain of battling childhood cancer for the entire family. Some of their support services and programs include:

▪ Over $400,000 in financial assistance
▪ Donations of over $200,000 in toys and gifts
▪ Treasure Boxes filled year round at hospitals and doctors’ offices
▪ Pediatric Oncology Patient Care Navigator Program to provide education and support to patients and families
▪ Arts and Health Program designed for patients and siblings, including therapeutic arts and crafts, play interactions, visual imagery and distraction techniques
▪ Gift Card Program which enables families to purchase basic necessities like food, clothing and gas to come to and from treatment
▪ Tutoring and Homework Club for patients and siblings, as well as an Educational Advocacy program to assist patients with school re-entry
▪ Family Socials
▪ Portable Play Carts
▪ Legacy Bead Program, where patients collect colorful beads that represent their journey through treatment

To date the Kids Cancer Foundation has helped over 500 patients and families and celebrated numerous End of Treatment Parties.

KCF Ambassadors

The KCF Ambassadors represent equestrian proponents of the Foundation that are a shining example of the results of treatment and KCF type therapies as well as community icons and role models who seek to raise awareness and funds for the KCF.

Polo: Nic Roldan

Fueled by intensity, passion and raw talent, Nic Roldan has become one of the top professional polo players in the world today and holds many of the highest accolades prized by the adrenaline-charged sport.

Born in Buenos Aires and raised in the U.S. and Brunei, the fourth generation polo player remembers swinging a polo mallet by age four. Nic captured his first major win – the coveted U.S. Open Polo Championship in 1998 with team Escue shortly after reaching professional status at age 14. Nic has charged polo fields on five continents and continues to add to his roster of wins. Polo’s hottest rising star, for whom Wellington is his home town, has now added to his resume Ambassador to the Kids Cancer Foundation, a local charity whose mission is to provide hope and support to children and families battling childhood cancer and/or blood disorders in our community a cause he is passionate about.

Dressage: Amy Speck-Kern

For Amy Speck-Kern, dressage is a passion that gave her the inspiration to overcome childhood cancer. This passion, combined with cutting edge treatment protocols and the support of her family, friends, and outreach groups, allowed her to defeat Acute Myleoid Leukemia (AML) and pursue her dream of a successful FEI dressage career.

“I know that I’m here because of the research,” said Speck-Kern. “The disease and course of treatment inspired me to pursue my passion, and find a way to give back to the cause that has made it possible.” Her passion can be found in the saddle, astride thousand-pound dressage horses she teaches to move and dance in tandem with their riders. Now a professional FEI dressage trainer in Loxahatchee, Florida, she rides, trains, shows, and competes on Wellington’s prestigious international show circuit. After learning from and working with some of the best trainers in the industry, Amy founded Excel Dressage and, leading into the 2016 show season, has begun the process of giving back to childhood cancer research.

Amy Speck-Kern Places Top in Nation at Young Horse Championships

Wellington, Florida (October 15, 2016) – For Amy Speck-Kern, dressage is a passion that gave her the inspiration to overcome childhood cancer. This passion, combined with cutting edge treatment protocols and the support of her family, friends, and outreach groups, allowed her to defeat Acute Myleoid Leukemia (AML) and pursue her dream of a successful FEI dressage career. Speck-Kern hit a milestone this summer, after qualifying the newly imported KWPN mare Gerona for the 2016 Markel/USEF Young Horse Championships. The pair finished as one of the top 15 ranked 5-year-old combinations in the nation, and through the generous contributions of her family, friends, and colleagues, was able to pay the success forward in the form of a donation to the Kids Cancer Foundation of South Florida. The 501(c)(3) non-profit charity provides hope and support to local children and families battling childhood cancer, and is a reflection of the support and guidance that was so imperative to Speck-Kern’s conquering the disease.

Following her national championship debut, Speck-Kern attended the Kids Cancer Foundation’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Celebration at Lands End Farm in Wellington, Florida. In addition to ponies and face painting, the day of equine fun also centered around raising support and awareness for the children that battle the disease. “It’s important to remember that treatment is just one piece of the puzzle,” said Speck-Kern, “and normally the only one covered by health insurance. Education, support, and resources like psychologists and the camaraderie of other children who are experiencing the same reality are priceless. I love that we can work the horses into the support programs because I know that was a huge drive for me, and to see the kids interacting with them makes it obvious how much of an impact it has.”

Wellington’s equestrian community has a long history of supporting children’s cancer research and the Kids Cancer Foundation. This past winter, the KCF’s team at the Great Charity Challenge placed 3rd overall, earning a donation of $112,500. In September, the Southeast Medal Finals auctioned off a Kids Cancer Foundation custom Wood Craft Solutions jump with all of the proceeds to benefit the KCF. And it’s not just showjumping and dressage: international polo star Nic Roldan is also one of the Kids Cancer Foundation’s Ambassadors, channeling his success on the polo fields into awareness and support for this local charity.

“The equestrian community has always been exceptionally generous and supportive of our organization, and have made a huge difference in the lives of these children and their families,” said Michelle O’Boyle, RN, CPON, founder and executive director of the Kids Cancer Foundation, Inc. “Having survivors and high profile riders like Amy and Nick involved gives the kids hope for their own futures, as they see that there is life after leukemia or childhood cancer and that its worth fighting for.”

Amy’s Story: Riding for Childhood Cancer Research

In 2003 and at the age of 18, only barely still considered a child by medical standards, Amy Speck-Kern was diagnosed with Acute Myleoid Leukemia. Known by the acronym AML, this childhood cancer attacks multiple blood cell types, including red blood cells, platelet-forming cells, and white blood cells other than lymphocytes (when leukemia attacks lymphocytes, it is known as acute lymphoblasic leukemia, or ALL). AML represents only 20% of leukemia diagnoses, so Amy and her doctors realized it would be a challenge to successfully defeat the disease.

“They told us they couldn’t guarantee her next month, next week, or even tomorrow,” says Liz Mikutowski, Amy’s mother. With high school graduation quickly approaching, Amy went onto the course of treatment, a newly devised protocol from the Children’s Oncology Group, for which she was one of the first patients. Previous treatments had a 60% survivor rate for AML, and around the time of Amy’s diagnosis, the survival rate experienced a surge up to 90% thanks to advanced research and development into cures for childhood cancer. The new protocol for Amy featured these advancements, and coupled with diet, exercise and the support of family and childhood cancer organizations, she completed the treatment at an accelerated rate. After only 6 months, Amy was cleared of AML, thanks to the tireless work of children’s oncologists, doctors, nurses, and the generous funding, grants, and donations that made the research possible.

Southeast Medal Finals Celebrates 5th Anniversary with Mix of Traditional and Unique Classes

Photo: 3-year-old Kamilah, a client of Kids Cancer Foundation.

Every rider remembers his or her first pony, and every competitor can recall their first big win in the competition ring. For many young competitors throughout the southeast, that memory will be made at the Southeast Medal Finals Sept. 16-18 at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center.

Now in its fifth year, the Southeast Medal Finals provides up-and-coming riders with an exciting finals, offering classes for every level of hunters, jumpers and equitation. Many SEMF riders have gone on to big wins at the fall indoor shows! In addition, the SEMF has become known for unique classes to keep it fun and present unusual challenges.

This year is no different. Creator James Lala has reintroduced the World Cup format in the Jumper Finals with a first round speed class. New for the 2016 SEMF are the Children’s Hunter Pony Finals and Children’s Pony Medal Finals. And riders will find a unique new challenge in the Equitation Team Challenge of the States, combining junior and/or adult riders from their respective states in a team competition.

While the SEMF gives riders an opportunity for challenging competitions, it is known for making it fun. The show features several fun events such as a doggie costume class, doggie high jump, horse-less horse show and the always popular Parent Lead Line class. All proceeds from the fun shows directly benefit the 2016 SEMF charity, Kids Cancer Foundation.

Hundreds of riders from throughout the Southeast United States already have qualified, but others have the opportunity to qualify at wild card classes at the show. Make plans now to attend the 5th annual Southeast Medal Finals. Discounted stall rates available through Aug. 31.

Leukemia Survivor Qualifies for Young Horse Championships

Amy Speck-Kern and Gerona.

In 2003 at the age of 18, only barely still considered a child by medical standards, Amy Speck-Kern was diagnosed with Acute Myleoid Leukemia. Last week, she and the five-year-old KWPN mare Gerona were officially selected to compete at the 2016 Markel/USEF Young Horse Championships, marking a major milestone in her dressage career. And now, as a tribute to the doctors, nurses, counselors, and support teams that helped her conquer the disease and have the chance to live her passion as a dressage rider and trainer, Speck-Kern has launched a Go Fund Me page to benefit the Kids Cancer Foundation and help her reach the prestigious championships.

Be sure to visit the Go Fund Me page, set up to help cover the costs of shipping horses and humans to compete at Lamplight, and where half of all the proceeds go to the Kids Cancer Foundation!

In 2003, Amy Speck-Kern was diagnosed with Acute Myleoid Leukemia.

Through partnerships with organizations like the St. Baldrick’s Foundation and the Kids Cancer Foundation of South Florida, Amy hopes to raise awareness and funding for the imperative research necessary to one day conquer childhood cancers. In addition, these programs offer invaluable outreach, support, and resources to children going through treatment, as well as their siblings and families. “Most people don’t realize that treatment is only one step, and normally the only one covered by health insurance,” said Speck-Kern. “Education, support, and resources like psychologists and the camaraderie of other children who are experiencing the same reality are priceless and can make all the difference in the world to these kids.”

As an accomplished dressage rider, Amy is hoping to use her knowledge and expertise in the industry to introduce the equestrian community to the plight of childhood cancer patients. From piaffe-passage clinics whose proceeds will benefit ongoing research and development, to inviting local children and families to watch the spectacular dressage and show jumping extravaganzas hosted by the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, Amy believes it is her duty to pay it forward by contributing to the ongoing need for research that saved her life and hopefully by making a difference in the lives of children diagnosed with the disease.

Southeast Medal Finals Southeast Medal Finals Shines Light on Kids Cancer Foundation

2-year-old Kinleigh, a Kids Cancer Foundation patient.

Imagine a day filled with hospitals instead of horses, fear instead of frolicking, and exhaustion instead of exhilaration. For children battling cancer and their families, those images are reality. The Kids Cancer Foundation is the charity of the Southeast Medal Finals, and several special events will be held for the charity that helps children battling cancer and their families.

“My goal is to create awareness of this great organization while raising funds so they can continue to do what they do,” said Southeast Medal Finals founder James Lala. “What I find amazing is how Kids Cancer Foundation supports these families in so many ways from emotional support to tutoring and medical help. The most impressive thing to me is how they help families navigate through the medical care industry that the children need.”

Kids Cancer Foundation provides numerous programs, including a pediatric oncology patient care navigator, arts and health programs, tutoring and homework club for patients and siblings, family socials, and more. Created in 2001 by a group of doctors, nurses, parents and community leaders, its mission is to provide hope and support to children and families battling cancer.

Under the leadership of founder and Executive Director Michelle O’Boyle, Kids Cancer Foundation has provided more than $400,000 in financial assistance to families, given away more than $200,000 worth of gifts and toys, and most importantly, celebrated more than 50 “end of treatment” parties. Learn more about KCF at www.kidscancersf.org.

“We’re very excited about the event, and many of us are planning to attend,” O’Boyle said.  “We look forward to meeting everyone involved.”

At the 2016 Southeast Medal Finals, proceeds from a silent auction will benefit KCF. Generous supporters already have donated equestrian boots and clothing, accessories, fine art, and jewelry. Auction items are still being accepted. If you have something to donate, please call 561-906-6668.

In addition to the silent auction, competitors and their families won’t want to miss out on the fun classes, including a dog costume contest, parent lead-line, horseless puissance and others. Entry fees from all the fun classes benefit Kids Cancer Foundation.

During the 2016 SEMF, one lucky ticketholder will win a custom jump created by Frankie and Alex Alameda of Wood Craft Solutions. The jump features the Kids Cancer Foundation heart logo, and the word “love” in purple stylized letters. For a suggested donation of $25 to Kids Cancer Foundation, you can earn a chance to win the jump, or 5 chances for $100. Tickets will be available online soon. Meantime, call James Lala at 561-906-6668 to get one today.

2016 SEMF to Benefit Kids’ Cancer Foundation

2-year-old Kinleigh in Lead Line Class.

James Lala, creator and founder of the Southeast Medal Finals, is proud to announce that the Kids’ Cancer Foundation will be the charitable beneficiary of the 2016 Southeast Medal Finals.

Lala is an advocate of the charity that works as a support system for children battling cancer and their families. The 2016 Southeast Medal Finals will include silent and live auctions to benefit Kids’ Cancer Foundation.

“Kids’ Cancer Foundation is a wonderful organization that provides resources and emotional support for kids with cancer and for their families. I’m very proud that the Southeast Medal Finals will be supporting the organization and families this year,” Lala said. “It’s amazing what they do for those kids and their families.”

Children with cancer or blood disorders typically undergo 2½ to 3½ years of treatment, and five years of follow-up. Chemotherapy treatments, doctor visits and trips to the hospital consume the majority of their time and significantly impact the entire family.

Kids’ Cancer Foundation provides numerous programs, including a pediatric oncology patient care navigator, arts and health programs, tutoring and homework club for patients and siblings, family socials, and more. Under the leadership of founder and Executive Director Michelle O’Boyle, Kids’ Cancer Foundation has contributed upwards of $400,000 in financial assistance to families, given away more than $200,000 in gifts and toys, and most importantly, celebrated more than 50 “end of treatment” parties.

Equestrian donors have made it possible in the past for children under Kids’ Cancer Foundation care to attend horseback riding camps. And the kids have participated in “fun shows” as part of James Lala’s horse shows.

“He has a big heart,” O’Boyle said of Lala. “Something resonated in him seeing these kids. And the kids’ riding programs have been one of the best opportunities for them,” she added.

In addition to the Southeast Medal Finals naming Kids’ Cancer Foundation as its charitable partner, James Lala’s Wellington Quarantine has a long-term program of support for Kids’ Cancer Foundation. Lala is making a $25 donation for each horse whose owner chooses Wellington Quarantine and is inviting the clients to match it. Lala recently delivered the first donation check to Kids’ Cancer Foundation.

Auction items for the Southeast Medal Finals silent and live auctions are now being accepted. Please call 561-906-6668 if you are interested in supporting through an auction contribution or other donation. For more information about the 2016 Southeast Medal Finals, visit www.SoutheastMedalFinals.com.
