Kentucky Spring Horse Show Updates

Lexington, KY – April 27, 2021 – All exhibitors who are planning on attending either or both of the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows (May 11-16 and May 18-23) should read these updates. Important information regarding the collection of signed USEF Waivers upon arrival at the Kentucky Horse Park and arrival times for FEI horses are displayed below.

USEF Waiver Collection

Every person entering the Horse Park will require the following:

  • Hand a completed waiver to the security staff at the time of their initial temperature check.
  • A wristband will be affixed to the wrist once the waiver is received, and the wristband must not be removed until you have finished showing and have exited the Horse Park for the last time.
  • This wristband will need to be shown on the wrist each day to enter the Horse Park at the temperature checkpoint.
  • If the wristband is removed, that individual will be required to complete another USEF waiver to obtain a replacement wristband.

Please be prepared and arrive with the signed waiver for every individual in your vehicle. This will expedite the initial check-in process for everyone.

  • No horses will be allowed into the FEI stabling compound until 8 a.m. on Monday, May 10th under any circumstances.
  • All horses will undergo veterinary examination upon arrival.
  • Passports & Health Certificates must accompany horses at arrival.
  • All horses must be in the FEI compound by 11:30 am on Tuesday, May 11th in order to participate in the jog.

FEI Horse Arrival Inspection Times:

  • Monday: 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday: 7:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

2020 Kentucky Spring Horse Shows Canceled

Lexington, Ky. – April 1, 2020 – It is with regret that in response to the COVID-19 public health crisis we must announce the cancellation of the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows, which were scheduled for May 5-10 and May 12-17, 2020 at the Kentucky Horse Park.  It is clear now that the country will at best be in a recovery phase and it will be too soon to ensure the safety of our staff, participants, and the wider community. Therefore, we must cancel.  Payments for stalls and entries which have already been made will be refunded.

We are hopeful that this trying time for all of us will pass and that life will return to some semblance of normality soon.  We will be publishing the prize list in the coming weeks for our Kentucky Summer Series.

2019 Kentucky Spring Prize List and FEI Approved Schedules Available Online

Lexington, Ky. – March 21, 2019 – Kentucky Spring Horse Shows’ management company, Kentucky Horse Shows LLC, is excited to announce that the unparalleled hunter/jumper competition will be returning to the stunning Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, Kentucky, from May 8-19, 2019. The FEI CSI3* show jumping event will feature both international and national competition for horses and riders of all levels at the magnificent venue which is nestled in the heart of horse country. The first week of competition, the Kentucky Spring Horse Show, will kick off starting on May 8-12 and will feature a FEI CSI3* rating. Highlights include the $36,000 Welcome Speed on Wednesday, followed by the $36,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic on Thursday, which will start off the seven-part Hagyard Challenge Series, and then the $134,000 Kentucky Spring Grand Prix on Saturday. All three FEI classes will count for the Longines Ranking List and the Thursday and Saturday classes will also count for the Rolex/USEF Show Jumping Ranking List. In addition, the featured national classes will be the $35,000 Commonwealth Grand Prix on Sunday, which will also count towards the Rolex/USEF Show Jumping Ranking List, and the $15,000 Under 25 Grand Prix to be held on Sunday, May 12.

A new addition that will take place during both the Kentucky Spring Horse Show and the Kentucky Spring Classic is the Classic Champions Developing Jumper Tour, sponsored by Classic Champions, Inc., which will offer classes for 5, 6, and 7-year-old horses. This exciting eight-part tour will conclude with championship events that will be held at the Kentucky Horse Park during the Kentucky National Horse Show from Sept. 18-22.

The Kentucky Spring Horse Show will also be a World Champion Hunter Rider (WCHR) member event, where riders can earn points towards year-end awards. Hunters will take center stage on Sunday in the Stonelea Ring with the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby and the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby, the first of 15 World Equestrian Center/Kentucky Horse Shows USHJA National Hunter Derby Series events.

Competition will continue the next week with the Kentucky Spring Classic, will take place from May 15-19, also with a FEI CSI3* rating. The $36,000 Welcome Speed will be held on Wednesday, followed by the $36,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic on Thursday, as riders try to accumulate valuable points for the Hagyard Leading Rider Bonus. On Saturday evening, May 18, riders will battle it out for top honors under the lights of the Rolex Stadium in the $134,000 Mary Rena Murphy Grand Prix. Once again, all three FEI classes will count for the Longines Ranking List and the Thursday and Saturday classes will also count for the Rolex/USEF Show Jumping Ranking List. The featured national classes are the $35,000 Bluegrass Grand Prix on Sunday in the Rolex Stadium, which counts towards the Rolex/USEF Show Jumping Ranking List and the $15,000 Under 25 Grand Prix to be held on Sunday, May 19.

The Kentucky Spring Classic features the second competition of the 15 event World Equestrian Center/Kentucky Horse Shows USHJA National Hunter Derby Series in the Stonelea Ring. Both weeks of the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows will offer WIHS and NAL qualifiers plus $10,000 Show Jumping Hall of Fame Classics.

Darragh Kenny Conquers $35,000 Hagyard Classic CSI3* with Babalou 41

Lexington, Ky. – May 10, 2018 – The Rolex Stadium welcomed its first evening event of the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows with the opener of the seven-part Hagyard Challenge Series, the $35,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic CSI3*, sponsored by Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. Out of a substantial starting list of 53 horse-and-rider combinations, it was Darragh Kenny (IRL) who emerged triumphant, riding Jack Snyder’s Babalou 41 to the fastest double-clear finish in 44.22 seconds.

Designer Alan Wade (IRL) challenged contenders over 16 efforts with a tight time-allowed of 79 seconds and spectators were not given a clear round until one fourth of the way in when Fabio Leivas Da Costa (BRA) entered the ring aboard the 11-year-old Selle Français mare, Tosca De L’esques, owned by Bonne Chance Farm LLC.

Hardin Towell, Darragh Kenny, Kevin Babington, Charlie Jayne, Lorcan Gallagher and Leslie Howard followed respectively with additional clear rounds to yield a thrilling 7-horse jump-off. Returning first in the second round, Leivas Da Costa set the pace with a swift, clear round in 44.44 seconds, but it was just two-tenths of a second shy of the winning time and the pair took home the second place award.

Gallagher and the Dacantos Group’s Hunters Conlypso II also put in two clear jumping rounds, but Kenny could not be caught as the duo ended on a time of 45.81 seconds. The Irish still added another name to the leaderboard as Gallagher was quick enough to capture third place aboard the 10-year-old Hanoverian gelding.

Kenny and the 13-year-old Oldenburg mare share a new partnership as they have only been a team for less than three months, but already show promise following tonight’s success building off of a win in their first 1.50m class together, the $50,000 Hollow Creek Farm 1.50m National Grand Prix at the Winter Equestrian Festival in March.

The Hagyard Challenge Series consists of seven show-jumping events held at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington throughout the 2018 show season with the second leg of the series, the $35,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic, to occur next week during the Kentucky Spring Classic on Thursday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. in the Rolex Stadium. The following four shows to host a Hagyard Lexington Classic event include the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, the Kentucky Summer Classic, the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show and the KHJA Horse Show. The series will culminate during the Kentucky National Horse Show at the end of September, where the rider who accumulates the most points in the series will receive a $50,000 Leading Rider Award, presented upon completion of the seventh event, the $65,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic.

Scott Stewart and Harvard Hall Claim Grand Hunter Champion Award

Hunter competition resumed in the Stonelea ring earlier in the day with the Grand Hunter Champion title being presented to the rider who accumulated the highest scores throughout competition on Wednesday and Thursday at the Kentucky Horse Park. Despite numerous veteran hunter riders putting in their best efforts, it was Scott Stewart and Dr. Betsee Parker’s Harvard Hall who claimed the Grand Hunter Champion prize.

Stewart and Harvard Hall captured the award by acquiring the most points from competing, and earning champion, in the Green Conformation Hunters. On Wednesday, the pair claimed first place in both over fences classes with scores of 87 and 81 in addition to first place in the under saddle portion of competition. They continued to dominate Thursday’s Green Conformation Hunters with scores in the 80s. Stewart and the 7-year-old KWPN gelding, Harvard Hall, have proven themselves to be a great team, having won numerous champion titles during the 2018 Winter Equestrian Festival (WEF) in Wellington, Florida. Harvard Hall was purchased by Dr. Betsee Parker in the beginning of the 2018 WEF circuit.

The Grand Hunter Champion award is presented each year by Visse Wedell. Wedell has been a continuous great supporter of the Kentucky Horse Shows by sponsoring grand championship prizes in multiple divisions every year.

Vale Leads Hagyard Challenge Series, Hesslink Tops Hallway Feeds Standings

Lexington, Ky. – May 16, 2016 – Aaron Vale has taken the early lead in the 2016 Hagyard Challenge Series by claiming the second and third place positions during Thursday’s $34,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic CSI3*. Vale, who has been competing at the Kentucky Horse Shows for 28 years, rode Quidam’s Good Luck and Finou 4 to double-clear rounds, finishing just shy of the winner, Pablo Barrios on ASD Farfala. The Kentucky Spring Horse Show also featured the lead-off event for the $5,000 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby series, where Geoffrey Hesslink and Rookie led the victory gallop, giving him the lead in the standings.

In the Hagyard Challenge Series, Pablo Barrios of Venezuela is holding the second place position in the standings after claiming the victory on Thursday aboard ASD Farfala, and is just 10 points behind Vale. Victoria Colvin is currently ranked third in the standings after she went double-clear with Austria 2 to earn fourth place honors.

The Hagyard Challenge Series consists of seven grand prix classes to be held during the 2016 show series at the Kentucky Horse Park. Following the final event, a cash prize of $50,000 will be awarded to the rider accumulating the most points throughout the series as well as a $10,000 prize for the reserve champion.

The series concludes with the $65,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic held during the Kentucky National Horse Show. Following that exciting competition, the winner of the $50,000 Leading Rider Bonus will be announced and presented with the cash prize by the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. New this year is the $200 Best Turned Out award, sponsored by Bob Mickler’s, which will go to a well-deserving groom following each grand prix. In addition, a Hagyard’s Handsomest Hound contest will also be held at each grand prix, sponsored by MedVet Medical & Cancer Centers for Pets.

The Kentucky Spring Horse Show concluded on Sunday, May 15, and one of the highlight events was the kick-off of the 2016 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby series. Hesslink currently holds the lead in the standings with his winning effort aboard Rookie as well as the third place spot on Esco. Douglas Boyd, who placed second with Calido’s Son, and Aaron Vale, who picked up the third place award with Madewell, follow Hesslink closely in the rankings.

The five-part series will feature a $5,000 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby throughout the spring and summer, and at the conclusion of the series the Leading Rider Bonus will be presented.  The $15,000 Hallway Feeds Leading Rider Bonus will award a $10,000 cash prize to the professional rider accumulating the most points in the five classes that make up the 2016 Hallway Feeds series. The series-leading amateur and junior riders accumulating the most points will each receive a $2,500 cash prize. Riders will receive points only on their highest placed horse in each of the classes. The awards will be presented at the conclusion of the Hallway Feeds class at the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show on August 21.

Hagyard Challenge Series to Feature 2015 $50,000 Leading Rider Award

Lexington, KY – April 30, 2015 – The Kentucky Spring Horse Shows will be getting underway next week at the Kentucky Horse Park, and one of the highlight events will be the kick-off of the 2015 Hagyard Challenge Series, sponsored by the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. The Hagyard Challenge Series consists of seven grand prix classes to be held during the 2015 show series at the Kentucky Horse Park. Following the final event, a cash prize of $50,000 will be awarded to the rider accumulating the most points throughout the series, as well as a $10,000 prize for the reserve champion.

The Kentucky Spring Horse Show, held May 6-10, 2015, will feature the lead-off event on Thursday evening with the $34,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic CSI2*. The top riders from across the nation will gather to compete over a challenging course and vie for the winning title and valuable points toward the $50,000 Leading Rider Award. The Kentucky Spring Classic, May 13-17, 2015, will host the second $34,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic CSI3* on Thursday, May 14.

Later in the year, four more Hagyard Lexington Classic grand prix events will be held during the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, the Kentucky Summer Classic, the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show and the KHJA Horse Show. The Series concludes with the $65,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic during the Kentucky National Horse Show. Following that exciting competition, the winner of the $50,000 Leading Rider will be announced and presented with the prize by the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. New this year, Brook Ledge Horse Transport will be awarding a $1000 shipping voucher to the Leading Rider and a $500 shipping voucher to the Reserve Champion Leading Rider.

Be specific as to the show name and the dates you wish to stay. Check-in time is 2:00 p.m. and check-out is 12:00 noon. You must make arrangements with the Campground store if you plan to arrive earlier than 2:00 p.m. or stay later than 12:00 noon. Vehicles that are not removed from a campsite by check-out time will be towed.

FEI Show Jumping Events Return to Kentucky Spring Horse Shows

Lexington, KY – March 11, 2015 – The Kentucky Horse Park will be full of action this spring, as the world-class facility hosts two weeks of world-ranking show jumping events. The Kentucky Spring Horse Show Series will be presenting an FEI CSI2* and CSI3* ranked week May 6-17, 2015.

“After not holding FEI competitions at these spring shows for the past two years, we have reinstated FEI status in response to the numerous requests from High Performance riders,” said Kentucky Horse Shows Manger Hugh Kincannon. “We are confident that the opportunity to gain Longines Ranking Points will address a legitimate need in North America for more of these FEI classes.”

The Kentucky Spring Horse Show will mark the first week of competition, from May 6-10, 2015, at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The week will feature an FEI CSI2* rating, with the highlights being the $34,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic on Thursday, kicking off the seven part Hagyard Challenge Series, and the $75,000 Mary Rena Murphy Grand Prix on Saturday evening. Both of these FEI classes will count for the Longines Rider Ranking List and the USEF/Rolex Show Jumping Ranking List.

In addition, the $25,000 Bluegrass Classic will be held on Sunday, May 10th and will also count for the USEF/Rolex Show Jumping Ranking List. New this year is a $25,000 Under 25 Grand Prix.

Competition will continue the following week with the Kentucky Spring Classic held May 13-17, 2015, with a CSI3* rating. The $34,000 Welcome Speed will be held on Wednesday, followed by the $34,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic on Thursday, as riders try to accumulate valuable points for the Hagyard Leading Rider Bonus. On Saturday, May 16, riders will compete under the lights in the Rolex Stadium during the $127,000 Hollow Creek Farm Grand Prix. All three of these FEI classes will count for the Longines Rider Ranking List.

The $34,000 Hagyard Classic and the $127,000 Hollow Creek Grand Prix will also count for the USEF/Rolex Show Jumping Ranking List as will the $50,000 Commonwealth Grand Prix on Sunday, May 17th.

Both weeks of the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows will offer WIHS & NAL classics for Children’s & Adult jumper riders as well as $10,000 Show Jumping Hall of Fame Classics.

Lexington, KY – May 13, 2014 – The Kentucky Spring Horse Shows began on Wednesday, May 7, 2014, and one of the highlight events was the kick-off of the 2014 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby Series. The Hallway Feeds Series consists of seven national hunter derby events to be held during the 2014 show series at the Kentucky Horse Park. Following the final event, cash prizes totaling $15,000 will be awarded to the series’ leading riders.

The Kentucky Spring Horse Show featured the lead-off event on Saturday evening with the $5,000 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby. The top riders from across the nation gathered to compete over a challenging course and vie for the winning title and valuable points toward the $15,000 Leading Rider Awards. At the end of the night it was Christopher Payne and Churchill who led the victory gallop, giving Payne the lead in the standings. Hayley Barnhill, who placed second with Walker, and Adrienne Iverson, who picked up the third place award with Cenerife, follow Payne closely in the rankings. The Kentucky Spring Classic, May 14-18, 2014, will host the second event in the series on Saturday, May 17, in the Stonelea Arena.

The USHJA National Hunter Derby program is in its fifth year and is growing in prestige and popularity. Amateurs, juniors and professional riders are eligible to compete, giving it a broad base of support and interest. The $15,000 Hallway Feeds Leading Rider Awards will present a $10,000 cash prize to the professional rider accumulating the most points in the seven classes that make up the Series. The amateur rider and junior rider accumulating the most points will each receive a $2,500 cash prize. Riders will receive points only on their highest placed horse in each of the classes. The awards will be presented at the conclusion of the Hallway Feeds class at the Kentucky National Horse Show on September 20, 2014.

Pablo Barrios Remains Triumphant in Open Jumpers at Kentucky Spring Horse Show

Lexington, KY – May 7, 2014 – Venezuela’s Pablo Barrios has been making the trip to the Kentucky Horse Park each spring for many years, and 2014 is no exception for the talented rider who continued to dominate the leader board. Barrios kicked off the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows with wins in the 1.40m Open Jumpers, as well as the 1.45m Open Jumpers with Ambosell and Lascana, respectively.

Ambosell is very familiar with the Rolex Stadium, having earned top ribbons during both the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows and the Kentucky Summer Series in 2013. The 9-year-old gained experience at Spruce Meadows, the Winter Equestrian Festival and The Ridge at Wellington Turf Tour over the last year, and was ready to showcase his skills in today’s 1.40m Open Jumper class.

Barrios quickly navigated the speed course designed by Richard Jeffery of Bournemouth, England, which featured two double combinations and an open water. Seven entries traversed the track without error, but as the last pair to enter the ring, Barrios and Ambosell galloped into the lead with a clear time of 69.543 seconds, two seconds ahead of leaders David Beisel and Ammeretto, owned by Equine Holdings LLC of Traverse City, MI. Fellow Venezuelan rider Emanuel Andrade and AD Vangelys, owned by Hollow Creek Farm of Aiken, SC, scored the third place honors with a clear time of 72.975 seconds, and pathfinders Nick Novak of Poplar Gove, IL, and YB Blue took home the fourth place award with a clear round in 73.255 seconds.

“This is his first class after WEF, but I just tried to go for it,” explained Barrios. “I left a stride out in the first two lines. I had a long distance to the open water, and he jumped it great. We just had a really big gallop, and he really covered the ground.”

Barrios continued, “After I took Ambosell to Spruce Meadows he improved a lot. Then I gave him a break because he was only 8 years old, but we did a few small classes at The Ridge. He jumped really good on the grass. We did the last week of WEF, and I was very happy with him.”

The 2014 World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Normandy, France are just around the corner. Barrios has already qualified his second mount Zara Leandra for the competition, but he also hopes to qualify Ambosell, and is aiming her towards the Nations Cup at Spruce Meadows. He is also very excited about his greener mounts Lascana and Antares, and he thinks Antares could do very well at WEG.

“I am not sure if he will be ready, but at Calgary he can grow a lot and be ready,” said Barrios. “He is green, but he has a lot of scope. I would like to take him to the WEG.”

It was the 9-year-old mare Lascana who took top billing over Antares today though in the 1.45m Open Jumpers. “I put my best horses in the 1.40m to save them for the Hagyard Classic and the Grand Prix,” noted Barrios. “I put the younger ones in the 1.45m to give them mileage over the big fences, and they jumped really nicely.”

Barrios and Lascana had the quickest clear round to beat Schuyler Riley and Andretti, owned by Southbeach Stables of Wellington, FL, who finished second, and third place competitor Aaron Vale with Pleasure De Riverland, owned by Taylor Sutton of Austin, TX.

“This is a new mount for me that we got in the middle of WEF,” commented Barrios. “She’s very green and a little spooky, but she jumps everything. When I got her she was doing 1.35m with an amateur, but I think she’s very nice, very careful, but very green.”

Barrios continually tops the leader board at the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows, and concluded, “I feel like this is home for me. The horses like it; the footing is great, the weather is wonderful, and the facility is excellent.”

The jumper action will continue in the Rolex Stadium tomorrow evening with the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic, kicking off the seven part Hagyard Challenge Series featuring the Leading Rider Bonus. Riders will also have the opportunity to showcase their mounts during Saturday’s $20,000 Bluegrass Classic and the $75,000 Commonwealth Grand Prix on Sunday afternoon.

USA’s Top Riders Gather to Compete in Two $75,000 Grand Prix Events at Kentucky Spring Horse Shows

Lexington, KY – April 28, 2014 – The Kentucky Spring Horse Shows are just one week away, and riders are preparing their horses for the two main events: the $75,000 Commonwealth Grand Prix and the $75,000 Mary Rena Murphy Grand Prix sponsored by Audi of Lexington. The first event will take place on Sunday, May 11 in the Rolex Stadium at the Kentucky Horse Park, and the next class will be held on Saturday, May 17.

Each year, these grand prix events draw the best in the world, with Olympian Margie Engle taking the top prize during the 2013 $75,000 Mary Rena Murphy Grand Prix aboard Royce, while Meagan Nusz of Texas and Dynamo won the $75,000 Commonwealth Grand Prix.

The Kentucky Spring Horse Shows are always a destination for Engle, who commented, “It’s a big open area, and you’ve got plenty of room to ride here. Weather is always unpredictable, and no matter what the weather does the footing is always perfect. It’s nice to have permanent stabling, and there are always good courses. Kentucky is horse area!”

Local Kentucky riders such as Sharn Wordley and Derek Braun also make sure the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows are on the list. Sharing a fence line with the Kentucky Horse Park, Spy Coast Farm sends international rider Shane Sweetnam with a team of horses each year to compete with in the Rolex Stadium. The Grand Prix events will also feature international competitors Pablo Barrios of Venezuela, Richie Moloney of Ireland, Charlie Jayne and Todd Minikus.

Highlight events also include the $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic on May 8, which will kick off the seven part Hagyard Challenge Series, continuing with the second event on Thursday, May 15. The Open Jumper competitors will also have an opportunity to showcase their mounts during the $20,000 Bluegrass Classic held each week. Both weeks of the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows will offer Children’s and Adult Jumper Classics sponsored by Johnson Horse Transportation, as well as the $10,000 Junior and Amateur-Owner Show Jumping Hall of Fame Classics sponsored by Sleepy P Ranch & Audi of Lexington.
