Happy Birthday Jordan!

Flower Mound, Texas native Jordan Gilchrist celebrated her birthday with a big win in last night’s $5,000 Open Welcome in the irons of Jenny Booth’s Lucie De Brecey. Of the twenty rides, only six went clean and put the Texas contingency up against Great Britain’s Gemma Paternoster. Paternoster had a trifecta win in last week’s Welcome and also won Saturday’s $25,000 Grand Prix.

First to go clean in yesterday’s Welcome was British show jumping sensation Gemma Paternoster, now of Wellington, Florida in the irons of Zonneglans, owned by Paternoster and Phil Swallow. The pair set the time to beat at 78.573 seconds, well within the 84 seconds time allowed. Their second round was also clean and their time of 34.987 seconds, well within the 50 seconds time allowed would set the lead for the class.

Paternoster turned in the next clear round six trips later this time with Julia Harrison-Lee’s Figarro D in a time of 80.718 seconds. Their second round saw four faults at the first fence and a time of 38.628 seconds, leaving Zonneglans in the lead and Figarro second, but the Texas riders were on deck.

Four trips later, Whitney Owens from San Antonio, Texas in the irons of DS Holdings’ S & L Shoe Guru turned in a clean first round in 78.110 seconds. Their second trip was also clean and the pair finished in 37.613 seconds, moving into the second position.

Jordan Gilchrist of Flower Mound, Texas riding Jenny Booth’s 14-year-old Selle Francais mare, Lucie De Brecey, followed Owens and turned in a clean first round effort in 78.053 seconds. With six rides still to follow and Paternoster holding the lead, Gilchrist and Lucie turned in a lightning speed second round in 32.978 seconds, leaving all the rails up and taking the lead. “I was just trying to be as efficient as possible, ride forward and I kept my eyes peeled for the fastest track I could find,” said Gilchrist. “I thought last weekend we were really a little slow. And although I wasn’t holding her back, we’re still ‘newish’ together and so I was a little slow through the timers and to fence 2 last Saturday,” she recounted. “She’s had some time off and last weekend was her first grand prix in a while,” she said.

Mackenzie McGehee of Jacksonville, Florida was next to go aboard her own Fiona Van T’Paradijs and the pair turned in clean first round in a time of 78.784 seconds. Unfortunately, the pair was eliminated in their second round and would settle into sixth place overall.

Fellow Texan, Frank Owens from San Antonio, turned in the next clean round four trips later riding DS Holdings LLC’s Capricello 2 in a time of 82.900 seconds. Despite their clean second round effort, their time of 35.723 would see the pair finish in third place overall, leaving Gilchrist in the lead with Paternoster finishing in second.

“I’ve been riding Lucie for eight or nine months,” said Gilchrist. “And she just loves it,” she added.

“This is our first year in Charleston and we love it!” she said. “We’ve been trying to put it on our calendar for the past couple of years because we have heard such great things about this show and this year it finally worked,” she said. Jordan is a professional at Summer Hill Farm along with her mother, Laura Hightower and they brought 34 horses with them to Charleston.

Jordan’s favorite thing to do in Charleston when she’s not showing is tanning. “My favorite water sport here is tanning,” she laughed. “As a matter of fact, I snorkel with a noodle,” she added.

Last night Jordan’s family and friends celebrated her birthday with dinner at the Seabrook Beach Club overlooking the ocean.

The Charleston Summer Classic

For twenty-two years, the Charleston Summer Classic has been offering riders, their families and friends the opportunity to jump the waves and the jumps. Mullet Hall Equestrian Center, located on Johns Island, South Carolina, is twenty minutes from downtown historic Charleston with its abundance of historic southern mansions, fabulous seafood, dining, art galleries, horse and buggy tours and world class shopping.

The show grounds are even closer to the beach! Yes, about 5 miles away from the show grounds, you can be on the Atlantic Ocean. And that is really what helps to make the show so cool. The show’s close proximity to the ocean keeps the temperature just perfect in the grand prix arena and hunter rings. Miles of scenic, wooded trails meander through the show grounds and exhibitors love kicking back and trail riding if they are not enjoying the pristine beaches or competing in the arenas.

Does someone in your family enjoy fishing? Kayaking? Sailing? The Bohicket Marina is about a four minute drive from the show grounds and offers charters and rentals as well as dolphin watching tours. Golf anyone? Some of the best golf courses in the world are located no more than 10 minutes from the show grounds. There is a reason why the Charleston Summer Classic is the perfect show-cation with its packed social schedule, boutique feel and pristine show grounds. More than ever, riders are falling in love with the Charleston Summer Classic.
