Boggus Wins FTI WEF 12 Beval Palm Beach Adult Medal; Haefner Takes Year-End Prize

Wellington, FL – March 31, 2013 – Jennifer Alfano rode Miss Lucy, an eleven-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare owned by Helen Lenahan, to the top of the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby on the final day of the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival (FTI WEF). The final round of competition was held on the grass derby field at The Stadium at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) in Wellington, FL. Alfano and Miss Lucy were fourth going into the second round of competition for the derby with a first round score of 186. The pair galloped into first place with a round two score of 198.5 for an overall score of 348.5.

Inclusive and Victoria Colvin finished second with a combined score of 382. The pair was in fifth place after scoring a 182 in round one. Colvin and Inclusive’s spectacular second round performance earned the pair a 200, which helped them take over the lead late in round two before being succeeded by Alfano and Miss Lucy.

Temptation and Kristy McCormack rounded out the top three finishers with an overall score of 380. Temptation, owned by Autumn Janesky, earned a first round score of 166 before finishing with a second round high score of 203.

The first round of competition for the derby was held Saturday afternoon at the E. R. Mische Grand Hunter arena of the PBIEC. Forty-one attempted the course, but only the top twenty-five competitors would advance to the handy round held Sunday at The Stadium. Horses and riders faced a sprawling spread of several major tests of their horses’ bravery, including a derby bank, hand gallop, and four high option fences.

Alfano, no stranger to derby victories, ultimately clinched victory with Miss Lucy after beating both Colvin and McCormack’s top scores. Alfano’s name is most synonymous with 2012 USEF National Horse of the Year Jersey Boy.

Despite being the lesser known of Alfano’s derby mounts, she acknowledged the mare was actually the more dependable of the two. “You can always count on Lucy to give 110%. She’s actually a little more reliable than Jersey Boy. You never wonder [with her]. With him, he has his moments, as everybody knows. She’s one of those horses that just tries to do everything right all the time,” Alfano, of Buffalo, NY, commented.

Lucy’s consistency and remarkable suitability for the tests of a derby class are undeniable, given she has been on vacation for the past two weeks. “I did show her in the High Performance here [at the FTI WEF] this week, but that’s it. She doesn’t really take any special preparation.”

“She doesn’t have to practice,” Alfano continued. “She was here last year and did this and was great out here [on the derby field]. You don’t have to worry about anything on her. When you’re looking between her ears, you can aim at anything.”

Colvin, of Loxahatchee, FL, bested McCormack’s leading score late in the second round, determined to take over the lead from her fifth place finish in round one. Colvin took an exceptionally technical track aboard Inclusive as she attempted to climb the rankings and was overall pleased with their performance.

“I had a light rub, but I thought the rest [of our course] was really good. My plan today was to go as handy as I could and jump the big ones. If I had a rail, I had a rail. I had to move up,” Colvin acknowledged.

Despite not having a comparable course at home, Colvin had no doubt Inclusive would handle the demands of the derby field like a professional. “We just got a field [at home], but it’s not anything like this. I was confident he would be fine. I think he’s actually better out in the field than in a ring,” Colvin described.

McCormack, of Boston, MA, finished third with Temptation with the highest round two score, but was ultimately exceeded by Colvin and then Alfano. McCormack gave it her all knowing Temptation would be happy to step up to the plate.

“My strategy on that horse is always just to give as much as we’ve got. If we take a risk here or there, I’m okay with that. He’s the kind of horse that is so game, especially for this type of course. I got to show him here last year and I was just trying to go for it and move up as much as I could and he brought it,” McCormack expressed.

McCormack had plenty of ground to make up for after finishing seventh in the first round of competition, but knew the grass field would give Temptation the chance to shine. “He loves pace. He loves getting out there and galloping. He’s never as strong in the first round, when I’m going a bit slower and taking my time. Once we get out in the field, all we do is gallop,” McCormack explained.

Rachel Boggus Claims Another Equitation Victory with SS Whisper in Beval Palm Beach Adult Medal Final; Kathryn Haefner Awarded Top Honors for Series

Rachel Boggus and SS Whisper

Rachel Boggus, of Fort Wayne, IN, catch rode her way to another first place finish, this time with SS Whisper, in the Beval Palm Beach Adult Medal Final during the final day of competition for the 2013 FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival (FTI WEF). SS Whisper, a nine-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding is owned by Wee Enterprises. Boggus was awarded a Beval bridle and gift certificate for her blue ribbon finish in the final class of the series.

Brett Burlington and Cassidy, owned by Sweet Oak Farm, finished second and won an Essex show shirt from Beval for their performance. Third place was awarded a Beval Saddlery logo saddle pad, which went to Sara Ballinger and her own Wanderprinz.

Overall high point finisher for the 2013 FTI WEF was Kathryn Haefner, who rode her own Bentley in Sunday’s class. Haefner was awarded the ultimate prize of a new Butet saddle, also courtesy of class sponsor Beval Saddlery.

Boggus recently brought home a blue ribbon in the Ariat National Adult Medal class aboard a completely unfamiliar horse and was equally successful on new mount SS Whisper, an experienced junior equitation mount. “When I sat on it yesterday, I loved it immediately,” Boggus smiled. “It was so trained, just light and ready to go. It framed up really easily. It was my type of ride, didn’t take too much leg.”

Boggus considers the Beval Palm Beach Medal course an integral part of her annual campaign for Ariat National Adult Medal Finals, held at the Capital Challenge Horse Show in September. She enjoyed the challenging course of Sunday’s class that allowed riders to show off their skills.

“We started with a rollback and there were some inside turn options, which I always like when they put those in. Abby and I always try to think about what I’m going to do at the National Medal Finals, so we try to make it as hard as we can and practice more difficult options. I liked that there was an inside turn option and some tighter rollbacks so you could tighten up and make it fancy if you wanted to,” Boggus described.

For the flat phase of the class, Boggus was thankful to have a mount so well-suited for the demands of the test. “I’m not admittedly the best flatter ever, so we really have to do a lot of work on the flat to get my heels down and I tend to grip too much – I clench my hands,” Boggus explained.

“The flat is really challenging for me, but with this horse it was really nice because it was so supple. I just barely had to put any pressure on the reins and it framed right up. It’s really big and slow and comfortable, so that was really nice,” Boggus commented.

While Boggus has shown at the FTI WEF intermittently in years past, the 2013 season was her first full circuit. “I lived in Denver until this past July, so I would go to [HITS] Thermal. Now that I’m back down in the Midwest and living in Indiana, we come to WEF because we have a barn down here,” Boggus explained.

“I really like it, the weather’s always nice. The competition is the best in the country, and that’s one thing we really wanted to concentrate on – putting myself in these higher pressure situations at bigger shows,” Boggus expressed.

Boggus’ dedication has clearly paid off as she stands on top of the current national standings for the Ariat National Adult Medal. She will take April off to let her horses recuperate before starting back up again in Kentucky next month and setting her sights on the Devon Horse Show on her way to finals.

Kathryn Haefner and Bentley
Kathryn Haefner and Bentley

Haefner has also been a force to be reckoned with this season at the FTI WEF, coming in first in circuit standings for the Beval Palm Beach Adult Medal class. Haefner swapped between her geldings Columbus and Bentley on the path to first place and finished the series on Sunday aboard Bentley, a nine-year-old Warmblood gelding. The pair finished fourth.

Haefner describes Columbus as more of a typical equitation horse, but is quick to acknowledge Bentley’s ability to be competitive in both hunter and equitation divisions. “Bentley is super comfortable. He’s really easy to flat. Columbus may have more of the equitation look, and Bentley’s a good mover, so he does well in the hunters. But when you put a Pelham on [Bentley], he’s got that smooth, pretty way of moving and going round,” Haefner explained.

Haefner also enjoys the opportunity that the Beval Palm Beach Adult Medal class gives adults to show off their equitation skills and compete for a top prize. “I love these classes; they’re really fun. There are not a whole lot of medals for the adults to do, so this is a really nice opportunity to do something like that,” Haefner commented.

“The saddle incentive is great,” she continued. “I ride in a Butet, so that’s always a good incentive because I get the saddle that I like. It’s really fun [to compete in the class] because besides the handy rounds, you never get the opportunity to do a course that’s a little more interesting [in the hunter divisions]. There’s also a flat test, which the other adult medals don’t have. They either don’t have a test or there’s a jumping test, so the flat test makes things a little more interesting, and I like that.”

Haefner, of Buffalo, NY, juggles competing on weekends at the FTI WEF with attending classes full-time at the University of Miami as an aerospace and electrical engineering student. “Sometimes it’s difficult; engineering is challenging. I’m in the top 5% of my class and I try to stay there, so it’s been a challenge, but I like it,” Haefner described.

Haefner’s trainer, Stewart Moran, also of New York, travels south with her each winter and Fort Lauderdale trainer Jimmy Torano also trains the busy young amateur. “It’s a lot of hard work and everybody at the barn works really hard to get the horses ready while I’m not there,” Haefner acknowledged.

The Beval Palm Beach Adult Medal Final was the among the final divisions to award end of circuit honors to the competitors of the FTI WEF, which concluded competition on Sunday at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.

Jumper Competition Concludes

Wrapping up the final week of Jumper FTI WEF competition in the International Arena at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center, several of the Amateur-Owner Jumper divisions competed in their classics for week 12. The $10,000 Charles Owen Low AO Jumper Classic was first to go with 73 entries, ten advancing to the jump-off, and just one double clear round over the short course. Cynthia Fuller and Full Stride Farm’s Ingaletta had the winning round without fault and completed the course in 39.857 seconds. Megan Fellows and Belle Nuit had the fastest round of 33.92 seconds, but incurred four faults to finish second.

The $10,000 Maria Mendelsohn Low Junior Jumper Classic was held next with a win for Emanuel Andrade and Stransky’s Mission Farms’ Quebec Star. Seventy-six entries jumped in the class with 12 advancing to the jump-off. Six went clear over the second round course and the winning time of 32.882 seconds belonged to Andrade and Quebec Star. Kady Abrahamson and Basco H2 finished second in 33.429 seconds.

The final win of the circuit also went to Andrade with Hollow Creek Farm’s Crossfire 10 in the $10,000 Griffis Residential High Junior Jumpers. Twenty-two entries showed with only two clear rounds. The winning pair had the only double clear round and stopped the clock in 41.412 seconds to earn top prize. Second place honors were awarded to Eugenio Garza and El Milagro’s Bariano with eight faults in the jump-off in a time of 38.568 seconds.

SBS Farms and Jennifer Alfano Take Top Ribbons in the Final Week of HITS IX Ocala

Jennifer Alfano, pictured here with Maggie May, rode top mounts to the pinnacle of the leader board during the HITS Ocala series. Photo By: Anne Gittins Photography.

Ocala, FL – March 19, 2013 – Jennifer Alfano and SBS Farms have had a very successful circuit in Ocala this year, winning multiple championships and blue ribbons. This trend continued this final week of circuit, where Alfano piloted Call Me to top placings in the First Year Green Hunters and the Hi-Low Hunters.

Displaying just how much their partnership has grown over the past few weeks, Call Me and Alfano, made a run for the reserve championship, just missing it by a few points. The six-year-old Bay gelding, owned by Susie Schoellkopf and SBS Farms, was in the top ribbons, capturing a blue ribbon and two second place ribbons. Call Me and Alfano also came in fifth in the last class of the division. Continuing their impressive performance, Alfano and Call Me walked away in second place in the Hi-Low Hunters.

Alfano also piloted Maggie May in the First Year Green Hunters. Maggie May, owned by Billie Steffee, has become a show ring veteran beneath the guidance of Alfano, and knows how to wow the judges. Displaying her consistency to the fences, Maggie May achieved the first place ribbon; the third place ribbon and completed the class with two fourth-place ribbons.

Rose Hill, who snatched the Performance 3’6″ Hunter Reserve Championship last week, claimed top placings in the final week of Ocala. Alfano and ‘Rosie,’ owned by Sharon O’Neill, beat out their competition this week to receive third and fourth place ribbons in the Performance Working 3’6″ Hunters.

“Ocala was a great circuit for us – lots of blues and lots of sales,” Schoellkopf explained. “We have always enjoyed the warm weather in Florida, and Ocala is a great start to our year.”

SBS Farms, Inc. will make their way to the Winter Equestrian Festival next week to participate in the Palm Beach Hunter Derby with several of their top mounts. Jersey Boy captured the victory in 2011, and last year took the third place finish. After WEF, the team at SBS will continue to the Camden Spring Classic, Kentucky Spring and then the Devon Horse Show.

Based out of Buffalo, NY, SBS Farms’ Susie Schoellkopf and Jennifer Alfano run one of the foremost show hunter training operations in the country, and travel nationwide to compete in the nation’s most prestigious horse shows. SBS Farms, Inc. continues the proud tradition of the Saddle and Bridle Club as one of the top show stables in the northeast. Schoellkopf is also the Executive Director of the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center, which houses both The Buffalo Equestrian Center as well as SBS Farms. Built in 1922, the 160-stall facility is a historical landmark, with its unique English Tudor and gothic style architecture. Rose Hill Stays Strong Taking Performance 3’6″ Hunter Reserve Championship during HITS Ocala VIII Winter Finals

Ocala, FL – March 11, 2013 – Jennifer Alfano stole the limelight during Ocala HITS VIII Winter Finals this past week, earning numerous awards in the hunter rings with tricolor ribbons in every division. SBS Farms, Inc. has seen nothing short of success throughout the Ocala HITS circuit, with trainer Susie Schoellkopf and Alfano working side-by-side to ensure victories across the board. It was Rose Hill who snatched the Performance 3’6″ Hunter Reserve Championship, rising to the top of the leader board with ease.

The rose grey Dutch/Warmblood Thoroughbred is racking up the points in Ocala, and has been consistent throughout their stay. The mare already captured the $10,000 Devuocoux Hunter Prix with an impressive score of 89 during HITS V Ocala Winter Festival, and has only continued to excel. Her win earlier in the season solidified her return to the show ring after undergoing colic surgery in May 2012.

Affectionately known as Rosie, the 8-year-old mare took the first place finish in the Performance 3’6″ Working Handy Hunter, also snatching the second and fourth place ribbon over fences. Alfano and Rosie were awarded with the reserve championship, and Alfano admitted her excitement towards having one of her top mounts back in the ring and doing so well.

Shane George’s Timber Ridge secured the Conformation Hunter Championship with a slew of blue ribbons. Alfano piloted the bay gelding over the handy course to take the first place prize, as well as earning three more blue ribbons over fences and the first place in the under saddle.

Maggie May, owned by Billie Steffee, has continued to steal the show with each passing week. Last week she nabbed the First Year Green Working Hunter Reserve Championship with two thirds and the first place ribbon over fences, as well as the first place in the under saddle.

SBS Farms Continues to Make a Splash with Multiple Championships at HITS VI Ocala Masters

Jennifer Alfano and Timber Ridge rode to the top of the leader board in the Regular Conformation Hunters during HITS VI Ocala Masters. Photo By: Shawn McMillen

Ocala, FL – February 26, 2013 – With the winter circuit halfway over, SBS Farms Inc. has only continued to shine at the HITS Ocala series. Professional rider and trainer Jennifer Alfano has been piloting various mounts to top positions and bringing home tricolor ribbons every week, and the HITS VI Ocala Masters was no different for the exceptional rider. At the end of the week, Alfano had accumulated two more championships, courtesy of famed Jersey Boy and the up-and-coming Timber Ridge.

Alfano and Jersey Boy are the team that can’t be beat. After allowing Miss Lucy, Rose Hill and Maggie May a week to take a break, Alfano was proud to maneuver Jersey Boy around the hunter courses. Jersey Boy put his best foot forward in the High Performance Hunters, riding to three blue ribbons and one second place ribbon, dominating the division and taking the victory. This was Jersey Boy’s first competition since he claimed the derby victory in Jacksonville, FL, during the first week of February. With outstanding courses, he won the first round and cruised to a second place in the handy round to clinch the title with his seemingly flawless performances.

Timber Ridge, owned by Shane George, a recent mount for Alfano, proved to be a worthy teammate, when he captured the championship in the Regular Conformation Hunters this past Thursday. With his dashing good looks, Timber Ridge claimed the blue ribbon in the model. Alfano and Timber Ridge have started to impress the judges and their high placings reflect such. Over fences, the two garnered the blue ribbon, third place, fourth place, and took the third in the handy round. They also were victorious in the under saddle with another blue ribbon.

Earlier in the day, Alfano and Call Me competed in the First Year Green Hunters. Call Me, owned by Susie Schoellkopf and SBS Farms, had consistent rounds, taking home two sixth place ribbons. The pair was also awarded a fourth place ribbon for their efforts over fences. Alfano and Call Me have only shown the past two weeks, but their relationship is continuing to blossom as they prove consistency throughout the division.

Alfano’s final mount for the week was Me Again, owned by Helen Lenahan. The two were the first to compete for the week, showing Wednesday morning. Me Again and Alfano wowed the judges with their skills and were presented with second place ribbon over fences, as well as winning the fifth place over fences.

Jennifer Alfano and Rose Hill Win Big in the $10,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix at HITS Ocala V

OCALA, FL (February 18, 2013) – Jennifer Alfano got down to business at HITS Post Time Farm in Ocala, Florida, and won the $10,000 Devoucoux Hunter Prix this weekend. Alfano of Buffalo, New York and Sharon O’Neill’s Rose Hill rode to a sweet victory and a $2,800 winner’s check. Sweeter than usual, however, the win marked a storied return back to the competition ring for Rose Hill.

“She is only eight years old and underwent colic surgery last May,” said Alfano of the Warmblood mare that carried her to the blue. “She just started showing again and I am really excited to have her back.”

The scenery changed this week for hunter prix riders as they moved to the main hunter ring and showed over a course designed by Doug Russell of Ocala, Florida.

Alfano was second going into the final round after a score of 86, right behind Winn Alden of Bristow, Virginia aboard Barbara Sheffield’s Cameo Appearance with an 87. Alfano was tenth to return in a 12-horse second round and rode to an impressive 89, which was just enough to deliver the win. Alfano also piloted Rose Hill to a second and third-place finish in two HITS Ocala Devoucoux Hunter Prix earlier in the circuit.

Despite the chilly weather that rolled in and prompted some frisky antics from several horses during the class, Alfano admits that Rose Hill was focused and pretty unflappable throughout the day.

“She walked right into the new ring and got it done,” said Alfano of Rose Hill. “She is so easy and fun – she is the kind of horse that everyone wants in their barn.”

After an 86 in round two gave him a total score of 173, just two points below Alfano, Alden and Cameo Appearance finished second. Amanda Steege has already been in the Devoucoux Hunter Prix money several times this season and rode to third yesterday with Susan Darragh’s Zidane. They boasted an overall score of 167.5.

Another familiar face in the top five with two wins already pocketed, Shachine Belle of Farmington, Connecticut and Robin Swinderman’s INXS finished fourth with a score of 166.75. Paul Mathews of Somerset, Virginia fell just short of Belle and rounded out the top five with a 166.5 on Terry Morrison’s Carino.

With four more qualifying opportunities for the Diamond Mills $500,000 Hunter Prix Final during the HITS Ocala Winter Circuit, Alfano is hopeful that Rose Hill is the horse to get her to HITS Championship Weekend this fall. “She’s a perfect horse for that class. She shows in the 3’6” Performance Division and was champion this week, so she is really getting back into form.  We definitely hope to qualify and ride in the $500,000 class in Saugerties,” she said.

$1,500 HITS Hunter Prix

Amy Zettler of Aldie, Virginia bested 52 to pilot her own Glad Rags to the top of the $1,500 HITS Hunter Prix this weekend at HITS Ocala. After a second-place finish last week, Zettler is sitting near the top of the rider standings for September’s HITS $250,000 Hunter Prix Final.

Meghan Kaupp of Pittsford, New York was second aboard Serenity Farm’s Q and Lena Rae Reeb of Weston, Connecticut finished third with Jamie Ringel’s Private Ryan. After a win in last year’s HITS Children Hunter Pony Final, Reeb is looking forward to a triumphant return to Saugerties, New York this year and an appearance in the HITS Hunter Prix Final during HITS Championship Weekend.

Lynn Seithel of Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina rode Louse Petz’s Wellington to fourth and Marge Sidman of Marstons Mills, Massachusetts capped the top five with her own Robinlanta.

Maggie May Takes First Year Championship for Second Consecutive Week at HITS Ocala

Jen Alfano and Maggie May. Photo by Anne Gittins Photography

Buffalo, NY and Ocala, FL – February 11, 2013 – The bay Brandenberger mare, Maggie May, has made a name for herself through the varying Florida horse shows this Winter circuit. With professional rider Jennifer Alfano’s careful guidance, Maggie May took top call throughout the First Year Green Working Hunter division, nabbing the championship at HITS IV Ocala Winter Classic. SBS Farms, Inc. has shown great success throughout Jacksonville and Ocala in both the hunter and jumper rings.

It was a crisp morning as Maggie May, owned by Billie Steffee, took her turn at the beautifully designed hunter course at the HITS IV Ocala Winter Classic. After stealing the show last week in Jacksonville, all eyes were on the bay mare as she showcased her talent with Alfano in the irons. They were awarded the first and third place ribbons in the over fences, as well as taking the third place finish in the handy class. It was Maggie May’s beautiful rhythm that earned the pair the third place in the under saddle, sealing the championship.

Wellington, FL – February 4, 2013 – SBS Farms Inc. has jumped into the 2013 show season, leaving nothing behind. Professional rider and trainer Jennifer Alfano rode Maggie May to a championship in the First Year Green Working Hunters during their stay in Jacksonville, FL, dominating the hunter rings during the Jacksonville Finale Horse Show. She and her other various mounts also earned high honors in numerous classes throughout the week, as well as snatching the first place title with Jersey Boy in the International Derby.

Maggie May, a bay Brandenberger Mare owned by Billie Steffee, recently moved up into the First Year Green Working Hunters from the Pre-Green Hunters. Alfano and Maggie May gave everything they had, showcasing beautiful rounds over fences, and earning the championship tricolor in the division.

“I got her last year as Pre-Green horse and she is a really special horse,” said Alfano. “This was her first show doing the First Years and she was awesome. It is hard to believe that it was her first show of the year. She just marched in the ring like she owned the place.”
