Jacksonville Winter A to Z Recap & Finale Schedule Changes

Jennifer Alfano and Jersey Boy. Flashpoint Photography.

Week 2 of the Jacksonville Winter Series and the annual $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby sponsored by Glen Kernan Golf & Country Club were a success.  As spectators wined and dined in the VIP tent, Jennifer Alfano and Jersey Boy proved unstoppable as they continued their winning ways to best an impressive class of 24 horse/rider combinations.  During the first round they laid down a beautiful trip, moving into the fourth place position as the top 12 continued into the handy round. Jersey Boy is well known for his finesse in the handy round, and he continued to impress as they were awarded the top score, and subsequently, the highest score overall.

“He was good in the first round; he was a little rusty,” Alfano explained. “He hasn’t actually jumped a course since Harrisburg. He was really good, but had a really hard rub. He came back in the handy and was awesome.”

Alfano continued, “There were a couple inside turns, one that was at the end, that about half of the people did, but it was a difficult turn, and for some it was a little rough. The turn went to the high option at the end, and if you did the inside turn you almost had to add a stride. We did it really smoothly and didn’t have to add any strides. He was just really on. I was pretty far behind going into the second round, and I knew I had a lot of ground to make up. I picked up the gallop and just kept going.”

Additional weekly highlights include the $2,500 National Hunter Derby sponsored by Jerry Parks Insurance Group, Hunter Division Classics and Jumper Classics. Mandarin Equine Veterinary Services generously sponsored a lunch Pizza Party and Equestrian Connect generously sponsored a Brunch for exhibitors.

With Equestrian Connect, you complete your entry form online with just a few clicks of the mouse.  You now have the option to submit your entries electronically to a growing number of horse shows across the country or print and mail the hard copy.  Equestrian Connect posts entry forms for over 800 USEF “A/AA” shows nationally and 30 select Canadian shows.  Class schedules and prize lists are also posted.

WEEK 3 CHANGES:

Jennifer Alfano Takes Jacksonville by Storm, Capturing $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby Win

Jennifer Alfano and Jersey Boy rode to the top of the $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby leader board during the Jacksonville Winter A to Z. Photo By: Flashpoint Photography.

Jacksonville, FL – January 27, 2014 – Jennifer Alfano and Jersey Boy are back on the hunter derby scene, and they are taking the competition by storm. It was apparent that nothing was standing in this winning combination’s way as they rode to the top of the leader board at the $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at the Jacksonville Winter Series. SBS Farms, Inc. proved unstoppable as they continued their winning ways last week at Jacksonville Winter A to Z, capturing championships across the divisions.

No strangers to the winner’s circle, Alfano and Jersey Boy once again took control during the Jacksonville Winter A to Z $25,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby.

Jersey Boy was not the only horse that stole the spotlight during the Jacksonville Winter Series, SBS Farms was just beginning to start their winning streak. Alfano navigated Billie Steffee’s Maggie May to the Second Year Green Working Hunter Championship. They picked up two blue ribbons and two third place ribbons over fences. They also were awarded the second place for their efforts in the under saddle.

“She was really good. It was her first time doing the Second Years, which we knew she could do because she has such scope,” Alfano stated. “She was really good, and really consistent. She did the derby as well, but just missed getting into the second round. It was her first time doing the derby, so I was really proud of how well she did.”

In the Green Conformation Hunters it was Alfano’s own Candid who received the judges’ nod. During the model, he moved into the first place position, and he swept all the over fences classes. It came as no surprise that they would stand center ring for the championship tricolor.

“Candid was great again,” Alfano described. “This was the first time he was competing at the 3’6″ height. He was great. He is still a little green at times, but his jump is always awesome. He is a truly awesome horse.”

Alfano rode Diplomacy to the reserve championship in the First Year Green Working Hunters earlier in the week, earning the first and second place ribbons over fences, as well as the blue ribbon for their efforts in the handy course. Diplomacy is a new horse for Alfano, who is riding for Nikki Murphy. Alfano looks forward to continuing her new partnership with Diplomacy as she continues to show throughout the season at HITS Ocala.

Based out of Buffalo, NY, SBS Farms’ Susie Schoellkopf and Jennifer Alfano run one of the foremost show hunter training operations in the country, and travel nationwide to compete in the nation’s most prestigious horse shows. Alfano and Sedlacko Steal Show in American Saddlebred Hunter Challenge Victory at Alltech National Horse Show

Lexington, KY – October 30, 2013 – It’s not every day that you see riders compete over their first hunter course during a national championship, but when four world champion American Saddlebred trainers take the reins of a hunter and grand prix and professional hunter riders take the reins of an American Saddlebred, it makes for a night of fun and excitement. It was a game-changing exhibition at the Alltech National Horse Show as riders traded places for their shot at the night’s championship. Professional hunter rider Jennifer Alfano teamed up with Stephanie Sedlacko to steal the night’s victory as the first place winners in the swap.

Six obstacles were set in the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park, while riders donned a different set of clothing. Paired up by disciplines, the English riders worked alongside their American Saddlebred counterparts to help direct them through the series of 2’6″ fences.

Hunter rider Hunt Tosh was teamed with Melissa Moore, and together they rode to the score of 156 points. Melissa posted a hunter score of 78 points after having a late lead change from the outside line, while Tosh mimicked her score in the pleasure portion of the class. Their dual 78s earned them the eventual fourth place award.

“We practiced last night in a little bit more of a controlled environment. It definitely felt different tonight,” Tosh laughed. “It was fun. We had a great time. I am always up for trying stuff, and my partner was great. I couldn’t believe how good they were; I thought they were really good. Everyone on the side was helping us out and giving us tips. It all made for a great night.”

Clark Clouse had never even jumped prior to this week’s competition, but he rode Trade Money through the course with only one chipped distance for a score of 75 points. Olympian Laura Kraut stood ringside as she rooted him on, only to have the favor returned as she mounted Don’t Stop, owned by Melinda Moore. Although Kraut did not have a chance to practice, she came to the exhibition with her game face. She earned the night’s highest pleasure score of 85 points for a cumulative score of 160 points and the third place.

Although they may not be veterans, it came down to a battle between the Devon Horse Show’s Five-Gaited Special victor, McLain Ward and Devon Horse Show third place finisher Jennifer Alfano.

Ward paired up with Melinda Moore for tonight’s American Saddlebred Hunter Challenge, with Moore riding to a score of 80 points during the hunter portion. She stood ringside as she guided Ward to the score of 82 during his ride aboard A Long Good Night Kiss.

“It was totally awesome. I had a great time,” Moore said. “I think they had a great time too. Everybody was smiling; everybody was having fun. I hope we can do it more often at these shows. I think that would be great.”

Melinda continued, “The hunters are a totally different ride. We work such different muscles. The first hunter lesson I took, the next day I had muscles aching that I didn’t even know I had. That made me want to do it more and to have fun doing it. I rode Echo tonight, and he is wonderful. Actually, I’ve leased him now so that I can continue to ride him once or twice a week.”

It was only five months ago that Ward racked to the top of the ranks during the Devon Horse Show and Country Fair in Devon, PA. However, tonight Alfano proved victorious.

Ward and Moore’s final score of 162 points would prove good enough for the night’s second place, as Alfano and teammate Stephanie Sedlacko took home the championship with the overall score of 168 points. Alfano rode to the score of 80 points aboard The Blue’s Girl, while Sedlacko guided Special Edition to the high score of 88 points. Both riders were in shock as the announcers called their names for the championship presentation.

“I had a blast, but most importantly, thank God for my partner,” Alfano smiled. “She carried the show. She was awesome – an 88! She was unbelievable. I made some mistakes, but my horse was awesome. She’s young and green so I was a little nervous – well, I was a lot nervous actually. But she was awesome tonight. It’s so much fun, and it’s so nice of them to let us ride their horses. I can’t thank Stephanie enough for doing that.”

Alfano explained, “I had so much at Devon in May, and I just thought it was the greatest thing, so when they asked me to do it here I was so excited. Like I said, I was a little nervous because I had a green horse, but it was still so much fun.”

This was not Sedlacko’s first hunter course, but after 10 years of solely riding American Saddlebreds, it definitely proved to be a change. “I had done it in the past, but it’s been about 10 plus years,” Sedlacko explained. “So I hadn’t ridden a hunter until now. I thought Jen did great. I was so proud of her. The horse that she was riding was a 4-year-old. It’s only been shown six or seven times, and she’s been kind of tough. We were a little hesitant when we picked her to bring, but Jen handled her great. She rode her like a pro.”

The American Saddlebred and Hackney classes are one of the many highlights of the Alltech National Horse Show. With the Alltech National Horse Show finding its home in the heart of the American Saddlebred industry, there is not only tremendous talent but also excellent prize money and legendary trophies from the days of the National Horse Show’s past.

Jennifer Alfano and Maggie May Capture Buffalo International Horse Show Grand Hunter Championship

Jennifer Alfano and Candid captured the $1,500 USHJA Pre-Green Incentive Hunter Class. Photo By: Kendall Bierer/Phelps Media Group.

Buffalo, NY – September 12, 2013 – There were perfect conditions for the second day of the 67th Buffalo International Horse Show (BIHS) as the Indoor Arena remained dry as rain soaked the ground outside at the Buffalo Equestrian Center. The fierce hunter competition continued as the professional hunter divisions came to a close, and the announcement of the Grand Hunter Champion was named. Jennifer Alfano and Maggie May stood center ring for the prestigious Grand Hunter Champion presentation, after capturing a clean second day sweep of the First Year Green Working Hunter division. Alfano also piloted the young and talented Candid to the top of the Pre-Green Incentive, presented by Robert-James Sales, Inc., while also taking home the Working Hunter Championship with the renowned hunter horse, Jersey Boy. Jazz Johnston Merton and Kingston posted the first-day lead for the Amateur-Owner 3’3″-3’6″Hunters, while Penelope Ayers and Zandor were hot on their heels.

The hunter courses were designed by Brian Brown of Bloomfield, NY, and were comprised of green foliage, natural fences, brick walls and wooden gates. It was the handy course that proved a challenge with a serpentine of fences challenging both horse and rider alike.

The morning commenced with the First Year Green Working Hunter division where Jennifer Alfano dominated with back-to-back blue ribbons aboard Billie Steffee’s Maggie May. Alfano not only captured the championship, but she also secured the Grand Hunter Championship for her final total of 46 points. Jaime George and Sox Appeal, owned by Kelly Waples, rode to the reserve championship after adding two red ribbons for their rounds.

“I think it is great for Maggie to have won both champion and Grand Hunter Champion,” Alfano said. “She has come a long way this year, and become really consistent. I am sad that Billie wasn’t here to see her go, because she went so beautifully, but I know Billie is very proud.”

Alfano continued, “We are going to go to Harrisburg and the Alltech National Horse Show this year, she has been doing so great. I was so proud of how she has improved, and how well she did during this show.”

Alfano’s success had only just begun as she entered the High Working Hunters with the illustrious Jersey Boy, owned by SBS Farms, Inc. No other pair could best the talented team. They earned two first place ribbons over fences today, excelling in the handy round with smooth turns and athleticism. They were dually awarded the High Working Hunter Championship. Rachel Clawson and Montenegro, owned by Lilly Ulrich, earned the reserve championship.

“Jersey Boy is something special,” Alfano smiled. “He feels like he is back to himself, and I think that he really went out there and proved it to everyone. He won the Grand Hunter Championship three years ago, and Miss Lucy won it last year, but it was Maggie May’s time to shine; we like to keep it in the family.”

The Pre-Green Hunters were hot with anticipation as riders entered a battle of the best with the hopes of securing not only the division championship, but also the $1,500 Pre-Green Incentive Stake victory. It was Alfano’s very own Candid who excelled during today’s competition. The duo earned the judges’ nod and the Incentive Stake score of 87 points. Alfano also ranked second with Helen Lenahan’s Me Again, finishing with a final score of 82 points. Alfano and Candid were awarded the Pre-Green Hunter Championship, and she also claimed the reserve championship aboard Me Again.

“I love the Incentive Program; I think it is doing great things for our sport,” Alfano explained. “People now want to buy Pre-Green Horses, when in the past there was nothing to really merit them wanting to buy a young horse. It is really neat too, that I personally own Candid; he has been doing so well, and the incentive is definitely worth it. I am very impressed with how Candid has been coming along; he is becoming so consistent, and although he is still green, he is learning with each and every show. Me Again is a more recent mount, but he has really been coming along, too. I was very impressed with how he did over the last two days, and in today’s Incentive Class.”

The Pre-Green Incentive is a new class to the Buffalo International Horse Show, and a newly developed program designed by the United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA). The Pre-Green Incentive program is aimed to showcase the time and dedication that goes into the development of pre-green horses across the nation. The horse and rider combinations compete in Pre-Green Incentive classes across the country with the hopes of qualifying for the USHJA Pre-Green Hunter Incentive Finals in Lexington, KY, in 2014. The Pre-Green Incentive Program at the BIHS was sponsored by Robert-James Sales, Inc., and Jim Bokor was on site to present the award to Alfano today.

“It is a great show, and my daughter used to show here all the time. I wanted to support it, and keep the show going,” Bokor stated. “We talk about the future of our sport with younger riders, but we also need to talk about the future of our younger horses. This program provides a place to grow up, show their abilities, learn and move into the bigger classes. This is an important class for our sport.”

The first day of the Amateur-Owner Hunters got underway this afternoon. Jazz Johnston Merton and Kingston secured the first place win in the handy round, as well as the top finish in the under saddle. Penelope Ayers of Ravens Wood Farm also showed to a first place finish in the first round over fences with Zandor, as well as the second place in the under saddle.

“He was originally a jumper, and when we got him I started riding him in the Amateur-Owner 3’3″ Hunters. I have suffered three injuries over the last year and a half, and only recently began coming back. I couldn’t ask for a better horse,” Ayers smiled. “I thought it was an excellent course. Because he was a jumper he can make all of the turns and leave from anywhere. He really keys in and does a great job.”

Ayers has been a long-time supporter of the Buffalo International Horse Show and its beneficiary, the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center. She recently worked alongside Steve Kesselhaut to create the BTRC’s most recent video.  To view the video, please click here.

Ayers elaborated, “I had the privilege to make the new video for the BTRC that is on their Web site. I came up in June and spent a whole day with the program doing still photography, video and interviews. Steve and I put it together. This is a great show and anything to help these children is amazing. The video will be shown at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show this year. Since the BTRC is a beneficiary of the Pennsylvania National, they jumped at the opportunity to show everyone what the program is all about.”

Ayers also sponsors the $1,000 Ravens Wood Farm Groom’s Class, one of the most highly contested classes of the show. Today it was Jessica Litfin of SBS Farms, Inc., who took home the top prize. Maynor Dubon of Ravens Wood Farm earned second, while Kaylee Dreier captured the third place.

Ayers concluded, “This is a very special show to me; it is one of my favorite shows. I love Susie Schoellkopf and the BTRC program. I think anyone who is privileged to ride and show like I do, and have the horses I do, should spend one day out here to see everything this program offers. It is amazing to watch these children come to grips with challenges, and see how the horses benefit them.”

The Amateur-Owner Hunter divisions will conclude tomorrow when the champion is named, as well as the $1,000 “Full Monty” Amateur-Owner Hunter Classic. The Junior Hunters will get underway with their divisions, as well as the $1,000 Up the Creek Junior Hunter Classic. In the evening, onlookers will have the opportunity to watch the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center Demonstration and enjoy the Children’s/Adult Jumpers and Low Children’s/Adult Jumpers.

Jennifer Alfano Dominates Opening Day of the Buffalo International Horse Show with Multiple Victories

Jennifer Alfano and Jersey Boy took led the Working Hunter division sweeping the over fences for the opening day of the 67th Buffalo International Horse Show. Photo By: Kendall Bierer/Phelps Media Group.

Buffalo, NY – September 11, 2013 – The first day of the sold out 67th Buffalo International Horse Show (BIHS) opened to top-tier hunter competition as the Indoor Arena at the Buffalo Equestrian Center was alive with action. The premier fundraiser for the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center (BTRC) offered an array of hunter classes for all experience levels, with some of the top hunter professionals vying for the coveted honors. Jennifer Alfano dominated the Professional Hunter Divisions early this morning, while Mandy Bittner piloted Handsome Rob to the championship in the $1,000 Robert-James Sales, Inc. Thoroughbred Hunter division.

The morning began with perfect conditions, as competitors were welcomed to the Indoor Arena. The hunter arena was buzzing with anticipation as BIHS boasted a record high number of entries for their 67th year of competition. The First Year Green Working Hunters were the first to take their turn against Brian Brown’s course, where Jennifer Alfano and Jamie George went neck-to-neck to try for the opening day’s lead of the division. The course consisted of natural fences, including single oxers, a bending line and two vertical-oxer outside lines. Each horse and rider combination was challenged by the confines of the Indoor Arena, proving the perfect preparation for the quickly approaching Indoor Finals set to start in only a few short weeks.

“She has been great,” eventual leader of the First Year Green Working Hunter division Alfano remarked. “We didn’t show Maggie May a lot this summer, but she has really grown into herself and become very consistent. I thought she went great today, and she is a really fun horse to ride. She is still green, but she is so straightforward, that she makes my job easier.”

It was Alfano and Maggie May, owned by Billie Steffee, who rode away with the first and second place finishes over fences, as well as the under saddle. George captured the second place in the first class over fences, the blue during their second round, and was pinned second in the under saddle.

Alfano showed two mounts this morning, returning during the Working Hunters with Jersey Boy, owned by SBS Farms, Inc. of Buffalo, NY, to capture the lead. They recently rode to the third place finish in the prestigious $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, and their success followed as they continued into today’s hunter division. The duo swept the over fences with their picture-perfect rounds, and also were presented with the third place for their efforts in the under saddle. Hot on their heels was Rachel Clawson and Montenegro, owned by Lilly Ulrich, who earned two seconds over fences and the first place award in the under saddle.

“Chicago was probably the first time that he felt totally back to his normal, healthy self,” Alfano described. “At the Derby Finals a few weeks ago, I don’t think he was quite up to his fitness level. I think if we had had one more week, then we would have been ready, but he shined in Chicago and was on the money. He felt great out there today, too.”

Next in the order was the Pre-Green 3′ or 3’3″ Hunter division. There was no close call as Alfano navigated Candid to two first place ribbons over fences. They took the first-day lead as the pair to watch at the top of the leader board. Andrew Lomker and Tivoli, owned by Chris R. Steer, captured the third place finish over fences, as well as the second place in the under saddle, while Alfano rode Me Again, owned by Helen Lenahan, to the second and third place over fences and the third place in the under saddle.

“I knew Candid was a really nice horse when I originally purchased him, but he turned out to be amazing,” Alfano stated. “He was, and still is, so green but I am having so much fun with him. It is unbelievable. He puts a smile on my face every time I ride him.”

Alfano also captured the Baby Green Hunter Championship with Uptown Girl, owned by SBS Farms, Inc. Andrew Lomker and Marvelous, owned by Chris R. Steer, were awarded the reserve championship.

Mandy Bittner took control of the Thoroughbred Hunter courses with Handsome Rob, owned by Nancy Bittner. She earned the first and two second place ribbons over fences, and also snatched up the first place in the under saddle to take the class championship. Alfano and Chasin the Red, owned by Joe Alfano, were awarded the reserve championship.

“I have had Handsome Rob for eight years, and he has come a long way since I first got him. This was our first time here, and I was really happy with how he went out there today,” Bittner explained. “I am planning on going to Zone 2 Finals, so I wanted to compete somewhere inside; this was the perfect preparation.”

Bittner continued, “He needs a helpful ride, but I can’t get too nervous, because he feeds off of my energy. I am super happy with how he was; the course was difficult, but he handled it great. He is a good old boy.”

Holly Ferrell led the Low Hunter division from start to finish, piloting Tempo to the eventual championship tricolor. They were awarded the first, second and third place over fences. Alicia Heberle picked up the reserve championship with Del Piero, owned by Doreen Tobin. Heberle is a new addition to the SBS Farms, Inc., family, only recently joining as their new Assistant Trainer.

“I rode at SBS as a kid, and then I went to ride for my mom at her barn in Rochester, New York. My sister recently graduated, and was looking for a riding job, so I jumped at the opportunity to work as an assistant trainer at SBS Farms,” Heberle elaborated. “I am still settling into the job, and figuring out what to expect. It is an amazing opportunity for me.”

The first day of the 67th Buffalo International Horse Show concluded with the Performance 3’3″ Hunter division. It was Alfano and Winter Hill, owned by Emma Merritt, who earned the tricolor. The pair picked up the first place and two second place ribbons over fences, and also rode to the first place in the under saddle to seal their championship award. Heberle once again rode to the reserve championship, guiding Rio’s Reflection, owned by Harper Hills, LLC, to back-to-back blue ribbons over fences.

“Rio’s Reflection is just coming back into the show world, and this was his first time back to his normal self. He was great out there, very comfortable,” Heberle explained. “This is such a unique horse show; it has been around for so long, and they really know how to make it special. The courses feature some beautiful jumps, and they go out of their way to make it mean something to the exhibitors.”

Tomorrow the hunter action will continue as the second day of the 67th Buffalo International Horse Show gets underway. The professional divisions will come to a close tomorrow, and the Amateur-Owner Hunters will begin. The highlight of the day will be the inaugural USHJA Pre-Green Incentive Stake where riders will compete to get the top points in the hopes of qualifying for the finals to be held in Lexington, KY, in 2014. The well-liked $1,000 Ravenswood Grooms Class will take place in the afternoon, seeing many of the show’s grooms approach the center of the ring for their turn at scrutiny as the judges choose the best.

Kelley Farmer Takes Top Spots in the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby

Kelley Farmer and Mythical rode to the top of the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby.

Jersey Boy and Jennifer Alfano in the Top Ribbons in Chicago Again

Antioch, IL – September 8, 2013 – The beautiful Annali Farm, owned by Rush and Caroline Weeden of Antioch, IL, was the setting for the 2013 Chicago Hunter Derby presented by Chicago Equestrians for a Cause. The event featured the $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby presented by ABBA Vet Supply and the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, and generously sponsored by Canadian Pacific (CP). The proceeds from this unique stand-alone event benefit three charities:  Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, The United States Hunter Jumper Association Foundation, and the University of Chicago Cancer Research Foundation.

The event is always meticulously prepared with beautiful landscape, amazing jumps, great judges, and excellent hospitality for both riders and spectators. Opening ceremonies built anticipation with the Mill Creek Hunt Club galloping across the field with the hounds howling and the hunting horn blaring.

The grassy field was in tiptop shape and the course was classic. Designed by Bobby Murphy of Lexington, KY and the legendary George H. Morris of Wellington, Florida, the course consisted of classic, “back in the day” type jumps such as rock walls, logs, rustic coops and fence lines.

“I’ve learned a lot about the history of the sport while designing this course with George,” commented Murphy. “It’s much more difficult to design with George because he has specific specs in mind for the jumps. He makes you really think. You want him to step out and look at the course and say, ‘It’s good’”.

Morris wanted a variety of jumps reminiscent of the field hunting days and specifically, four jumps with minimal ground lines, not exceeding 18″ from the base of the standard, and were noted as such on the course sheet.

“There really was some history to the course,” added Murphy.  “For example, the snake fence was built like farmers used to build them. They started with a split rail, zig zag fence, then collected all the rocks from the field before plowing and piled them up along the fence. Eventually the wood rails deteriorated and the stones remained.”
“This is what the sport should look like,” said Morris. “There should be more venues like this one.”

Morris not only designed the course but judged as well. Geoff Teall, Steve Wall and Scott Williamson made up the rest of the panel, scoring the horses as they navigated the field and the vintage obstacles.  For the handy round, panel 1 was Wall and Teall, panel 2 was Morris and Williamson.

Twenty six horses took on the course for Saturday’s classic round and twenty horses returned for Sunday’s handy round. The course for the handy round started in the woods jumping out over the stone wall, then to a coop, across the field on a diagonal to a bending four stride line, rolling back over a beautiful log jump bending through the woods again and out over the stones, continuing up and down the hill, finishing on a white coop or the high option of the white fence line.  The last jump proved to be the trouble spot, being a tall vertical at the bottom of a hill, it took its toll on a few of the riders.

It was definitely a great venue for Kelley Farmer as she took first on Mythical, second on Skorekeeper, fourth on On Q and sixth on Taken.

“We’ve been showing at this event since it began,” said trainer Larry Glefke of Keswick, VA. “We love it here.”

Jennifer Alfano and Jersey Boy have won the Chicago Derby three times
Jennifer Alfano and Jersey Boy have won the Chicago Derby three times

Jennifer Alfano of Buffalo, NY and Jersey Boy have also been attending the event since it began in 2009. The pair took the third place overall ribbon home this year but also won on this field in 2009, 2010, and 2012.

“The thing I love about the derbies is it challenges us all to be better riders and George brings out the best in all of us,” said Alfano. “When I walked the course I thought it was hard but it was actually fun to ride. Yesterday’s course, especially, allowed good horses to get great scores.”

Farmer agreed, saying, “The course allowed you to show off a good horse but you really needed a good horse. George wanted you to show brilliance but it wasn’t easy. The course asked a lot early on – you needed to be prompt right off the bat. It was difficult to keep up the pace up and down the hills but I loved it.”

“The pace and the undulation of the field is what got riders today and George knew that,” added Glefke. “You never have to worry about a horse like Mythical. He’s truly a mythical horse. I’ve trained a lot of horses to a lot of blue ribbons but you can’t train horses to do what Mythical does. He can win in all the hunter divisions and then go out in the field and do what he does. That’s rare.”

Glefke got the horse a year ago at Lamplight just off the airplane.  He knew then he finally had a horse that could do it all. Farmer won both the classic round and the handy round with the mythical horse. Entering the handy round with a seven point lead, they galloped to an 88 plus 7 handy points from panel 1 and a 93 plus 8 handy points from panel 2, with 4 high option points for a handy total of 204 and an overall total of 398 for the win.

“This horse show is the epitome of what the classes were meant to be,” Farmer added. “They really go above and beyond with two days of beautiful courses. Who better to put on this event than Rush and Carl who were in on the start of these classes?”

The Mill Creek Hunt Club was part of the opening ceremonies

The event not only featured top-notch horses, but also had something for everyone. Fabulous food and drinks added to the weekend festivities. Activities included a horseless horse show and petting zoo for the kids, shopping at great boutiques for the ladies, and Land Rovers and an RV to peruse for the gentlemen.

Fantastic raffle prizes and a Calcutta helped to raise money for the charities. Generous sponsors such as Ann K. Hubbards Tack Shop matched the proceeds raised from the raffle and Le Fash donated $500, which was earned since Alliy Moyer was wearing a Le Fash shirt in their “Wear It and Win It Challenge” during the National Hunter Derby.

The event also featured a $5,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby. Topping the field of 39 entries was Alliy Moyer, 19, and her horse, Carlson. Second went to five-year-old In Print, owned by David Glefke and ridden by Taylor Adams.

The 2013 Chicago Hunter Derby is one of the most prestigious single events of its kind in the country, raising over $300,000 net for their charities so far, thanks to the generosity of their sponsors. The Derby is presented by Chicago Equestrians for a Cause. The Mission of the group is to showcase high-level equestrian events with the express purpose of raising funds for selected charitable institutions in the Chicago area.

SBS Farms Cleans Up HITS-on-the-Hudson with Numerous Championships

Jennifer Alfano and Candid secured the Pre-Green Hunter Championship during HITS-on-the-Hudson. Photo By: Anne Gittins.

Saugerties, NY – August 6, 2013 – The team at SBS Farms, Inc. is gearing up for the 2013 Pre-Green Incentive Finals at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY. But before they make the trek to the Bluegrass State, they stopped at HITS-on-the-Hudson in Saugerties, NY, to make a final impression. Jennifer Alfano piloted Candid to the top of the standings in the Pre-Green Hunters, capturing the championship with a clean sweep of the division. The pair also added the blue ribbon from the Pre-Green Incentive Stake to their ever-growing list of accolades.

“He was great; he just keeps getting better and better, and it is really fun because I own him. I hope I’m not using up all of my luck before Pre-Green Finals next week,” Alfano said. “He really is quite simple; he is brave about the jumps. He doesn’t spook at anything. He is quite easy and is really fun to ride; he will always give you a good jump.”

“I love the incentive program; I think it is great. I think it is going to do great things for our sport. All of the Pre-Green divisions I have been to have been really big. I think it is really getting people back into it. People now want to buy Pre-Green Horses, when in the past there was nothing to really warrant them wanting to buy a young horse,” Alfano explained. “It is really neat too, that I personally own Candid, so I am earning back the sales cost with my winnings. The program has really opened a lot of doors, and I can’t wait for the Finals; it definitely is a great incentive.”

Candid is the quintessential Pre-Green Incentive Program horse, acting as an example of the time and dedication that goes into encouraging the development of pre-green horses. They beat an impressive group of entrants in the stake class, riding to the top of the leader board with their winning round.

In the Green Conformation Hunters, Alfano rode Grayson, owned by Maarten Huygens, to the division’s championship. They swept the over fences during their stay in Saugerties, as well as nabbing the second place in the under saddle. Grayson is a new mount for Alfano, but if their recent placings are any reflection of what is yet to come, the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show better be watching for this talented dyad.

Championships didn’t only befall Alfano during HITS-on-the-Hudson. Jennifer Basile and Rasputin, owned by the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center, rode to the top honors during the Katherine Cosmetics Adult 36-49 Equitation. They earned two seconds over fences and the third. They also picked up the second place in the under saddle to seal the championship.

Alex Trolli earned the judges’ nod during the Children’s 15-17 Hunter Horse division. She rode Del Piero, owned by Doreen Toben, to three first place ribbons over fences, including the second day’s handy round. She also rode to the third place in the under saddle. They secured the division’s tricolor with their winning rounds. Trolli also rode Del Piero to the first and second place over fences in the Modified Children’s Hunters.

SBS Farms will now pack their trunks and start their journey to the Kentucky Horse Park where Alfano will not only showcase her Pre-Green Hunter horses in the approaching Finals, but also ride her top mounts in the $100,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby Championships to be held August 15-17. She will be returning as the defending champion, after winning last year’s Derby Finals with Jersey Boy.

Based out of Buffalo, NY, SBS Farms’ Susie Schoellkopf and Jennifer Alfano run one of the foremost show hunter training operations in the country, and travel nationwide to compete in the nation’s most prestigious horse shows. SBS Farms, Inc. continues the proud tradition of the Saddle and Bridle Club as one of the top show stables in the northeast. Schoellkopf is also the Executive Director of the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center, which houses both The Buffalo Equestrian Center as well as SBS Farms. Built in 1922, the 160-stall facility is a historical landmark, with its unique English Tudor and gothic style architecture. Alfano Wins the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby at Chagrin Valley Hunter Jumper Classic

Jennifer Alfano guided Jersey Boy to the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby victory at the Chagrin Valley Hunter Jumper Classic. Photo By: Anne Gittins.

Moreland Hills, OH – July 17, 2013 – Jersey Boy is a name that has become synonymous with hunter derby wins across the nation and the Chagrin Valley Hunter Jumper Classic saw him in action last week when he took the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby victory. Jennifer Alfano also rode to the top of the leader board throughout their stay at the Chagrin Valley Hunter Jumper Classic taking the High Performance Championship, as well as the Grand Championship with Jersey Boy. In the Pre-Green 3’3″ Hunters, Alfano guided Candid to the championship, and the first place finish in the $1,000 Pre-Green Incentive.

Jersey Boy dominated the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby on Saturday, July 13. With Jennifer Alfano in the irons, the pair came out on the top, with beautiful rounds and perfectly cleared high options. Their scope and pace brought them to the forefront of the competition with ease. Jersey Boy took the victory with ease, while Rose Hill captured the fourth place and Maggie May earned the eighth place.

“Jersey Boy is definitely back, “Alfano said. “He was really good the first round and he jumped great. I was thrilled with him.”

Alfano’s win this year marks the sixth consecutive year that she’s won the USHJA International Hunter Derby at Chagrin Valley, five out of those six wins coming with Jersey Boy. Alfano was all smiles at the end of their stay in Chagrin Valley as Jersey Boy was honored with the High Performance Championship and Grand Championship.

SBS Farms, Inc. continued to steal the spotlight in the hunter ring as Alfano piloted Candid to the High Pre-Green 3’3″ Hunter Championship last week. They were awarded the three first place ribbons over fences, as well as the blue ribbon in the under saddle. It was Candid’s spectacular performance in the $1,000 Pre-Green Incentive Stake that caught the judges’ eyes. They were awarded the first place for their picturesque round, and also took the third place finish in the $5,000 National Hunter Derby.

“I have only had Candid a couple of months, but I love him. I am having so much fun with him, and I am really excited about him. He’s a really nice horse, and he keeps getting better and better. I love how consistent he is, and we are definitely going to do the Finals during the Bluegrass Festival in August.”

“He is really brave at the jumps, but when I first got him he was a little bit nervous with the horse show atmosphere – the golf carts, water trucks and tractors and all that. He really, for the most part, has gotten over that and has really gotten used to all of the action. I couldn’t be happier with him,” shared Alfano.

Alfano also guided Helen Lenahan’s Me Again to good ribbons in the Low Pre-Green 3′ Hunters. They were awarded the third place in the Pre-Green Incentive Stake, as well as taking the third and second place in the Pre-Green Hunters. The pair came back even stronger for the second week of competition, with Me Again snatching the win in the Pre-Green Incentive Stake and taking top honors throughout the Low Pre-Green 3′ Hunter division.

The two year partnership of Alfano and Billie Steffee’s Maggie May has continued to blossom since the fateful day at the Chagrin Valley Hunter Jumper Classic when they were united, and they returned to defend their success from last year’s High Pre-Green 3’3″ Hunter division. They posted consistent rounds in the First Year Green Working Hunter, riding to two thirds and the fourth over fences, as well as the third place in the handy round during the first week. Their success continued Tuesday and Wednesday as they earned the First Year Green Working Hunter Reserve Championship when they sealed their victory with a win in the handy.

Jessica Litfin and Cenzington 002, owned by Doreen Toben, rode to the top of the Low Adult Jumper leader board last week. She eventually captured the division’s championship with speedy rounds. Litfin took the second place in the Stephen A. Communale Low Adult Jumper Classic, as well as the second place in a Low Adult Jumper class.

Alex Trolli and Del Piero took the first place finish in the Children’s 15-17 Hunters , as well as rising to the challenge the second week to take home the blue ribbon in the under saddle and a third and two fourths over fences. Jennifer Basile and Rasputin, owned by the Buffalo Therapeutic Riding Center, earned good ribbons in the Adult Amateur 36 and Over Hunters.

SBS Farms will take a few weeks to rest and refresh before the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show in Lexington, KY. Alfano will travel to Saugerties to show Candid and a few Baby Green horses, but she is anxiously awaiting the $100,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby Finals in August.

Jennifer Alfano Wins USHJA International Hunter Derby at State College Classic

Jennifer Alfano and Jersey Boy secured the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby victory at the State College Classic. Photo By: Jessica Nemzoff.

State College, PA – July 2, 2013 – The 2013 State College Classic saw a tremendous victory from SBS Farms, Inc. last week. Jennifer Alfano dominated the professional divisions with her top mounts, as well as securing the first place award in the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby with Jersey Boy. The team at SBS Farms also took home top ribbons across the board in the children’s and adult hunter and equitation divisions.

The field of derby contenders at the 2013 State College Classic was all well prepared for the $10,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, but Alfano and Jersey Boy had their eyes set on the victory. They laid down a beautiful first round score to take the lead, and their momentum proved unstoppable as they moved into the handy round – Jersey Boy’s forte. It was the dynamic duo that led the victory gallop once the scores were tabulated. Alfano also rode Rose Hill to the sixth place position with two fantastic rounds.

Another highlight of the week at the State College Classic was when Alfano’s very own Candid rose to the top of the leader board in the Pre-Green Incentive Stake. They just recently came off of the Pre-Green Incentive Stake victory during the Country Heir Horse Show in Lexington, KY. Candid is the exemplary Pre-Green Incentive Program horse, acting as an example of the time and dedication that goes into encouraging the development of pre-green horses. Alfano also showed Candid to the Pre-Green Hunter Reserve Championship with an array of impressive ribbons.

In the First Year Green Working Hunters, Billie Steffee’s Maggie May stole the spotlight with Alfano in the spotlight. They were awarded a first, two seconds and a third over fences, as well as the first place in the under saddle, securing them the division’s championship.

Also riding to the championship was Chasin the Red, owned by Joe Alfano, in the Thoroughbred Hunters. Jennifer rode the thoroughbred to two blue ribbons and the second place over fences. She also showcased Chasin the Red to the fourth place position in the under saddle to claim the championship.

The success did not stop there for SBS Farms as Alex Trolli took the Children’s 15-17 Hunter Reserve Championship aboard Del Piero, owned by Doreen Tobin. They nabbed the second and fourth place ribbons in the over fences, as well as riding to the third place in the NAL/WIHS/M&S Children’s Hunter Classic. Jennifer Basile and Rasputin rode to the fourth place in the Ariat/Farnam Adult Medal, also taking good ribbons in the Adult Amateur 36 & Over Hunters.

Jennifer Alfano and Miss Lucy Lead the Victory Gallop at the USHJA International Hunter Derby

Jennifer Alfano and Miss Lucy secured the victory in the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby with an impressive 348.5 point total. Photo By: Rebecca Walton/Phelps Media Group.

Wellington, FL – April 1, 2013 – After a great circuit in Ocala, Jennifer Alfano and SBS Farms made their way to Wellington for the final week of the 2013 Winter Equestrian Festival. Alfano could not have asked for a better week, taking home multiple tricolors, and topping off the week with a victory gallop around the derby field aboard Helen Lenahan’s Miss Lucy for the 2013 $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby.

The talented 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare took to the stage and went right to the top of the leader board. The pair vaulted to the top rankings on day one, taking the fourth place honors in the classic round with an overall score of 187 points. Miss Lucy continued to shine on Sunday, when she galloped around the grass derby field, catching the judges’ scrutinizing eye during the handy phase of competition. With Alfano in the irons, the pair navigated all of the inside turns and took all of the high options, receiving scores of 88.5 and 89, with 6 and 7 handy points for a round two score of 198.5. These efforts went right to the top, leading them to the final victory gallop with a final score of 348.5 points.

“Miss Lucy is so reliable you can always count on her to give 110%,” smiled Alfano. “She is actually a little more reliable than Jersey Boy, because you never have to wonder. With him, he has his moments. She is one of those horses that tries to do everything right all the time.”

Earlier in the week, Alfano showed several of her mounts in the hunter divisions to prepare for the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby. Miss Lucy captured the reserve championship ribbon in the High Performance Hunters, riding to an array of top ribbons. This was Miss Lucy’s first week back since the eighth week of the Ocala series, and she came back with finesse. Tom Wright of Uphill Farm assisted Alfano with the training duties for the final week of the Winter Equestrian Festival, helping her rise to the top with her talented mounts.

Alfano also piloted Timber Ridge in the USHJA International Hunter Derby. The two went into the second round in sixth place, but then dropped below the top 12 for the final outcome. Timber Ridge also competed in the Regular Conformation Hunters earlier in the week to prepare for the derby. Owned by Shane George, Timber Ridge is living up to his reputation and raking in the ribbons in the conformation divisions.

On the first day of showing at WEF, Timber Ridge and Alfano achieved a second place ribbon, while attaining a fourth in the handy round. They then went on to attain first, second and fourth place ribbons on the second day of the division. They fell just shy of the championship, but Alfano didn’t hesitate to take the championship aboard the beautiful grey Rose Hill.

On her third mount of the week, Alfano attained the championship in the Performance 3’6″ Working Hunters with Rose Hill, affectionately known as “Rosie.” To start off her week in Wellington, Alfano and Rose Hill, owned by Sharon O’Neill, rode perfect courses. With a strong pace and consistent fences, the pair achieved a first place ribbon and two second place ribbons, sealing her Performance 3’6″ Performance Working Hunter Championship.

“She jumped beautifully over the courses, and the new atmosphere didn’t faze her all,” said Alfano of Rose Hill.  “She is so easy and fun – she is the kind of horse that everyone wants in their barn.”

After WEF, the team at SBS will now continue to the Camden Spring Classic, Kentucky Spring and then the Devon Horse Show. After such a fantastic winter circuit in Ocala, and concluding their tour with their victory in the $50,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, there is no question that spring and summer will see more tricolors from SBS Farms, Inc.

Based out of Buffalo, NY, SBS Farms’ Susie Schoellkopf and Jennifer Alfano run one of the foremost show hunter training operations in the country, and travel nationwide to compete in the nation’s most prestigious horse shows.
