Young Horses Show Their Potential in Final Day at IHS Champions Cup CDI-W

Evi Strasser and Rigaudon Tyme.

Loxahatchee, FL – March 24, 2013 – The

CDI-W’s Sunday class offerings attracted a number of promising young horses whose riders hoped to give them experience in preparation for a move up the ranks. Local and international competitors alike persevered through windy weather to put in strong performances at Equestrian Estates’ IHS Champions Park in Loxahatchee.

Evi Strasser and daughter Tanya Strasser-Shostak both rode 9-year-old horses to wins in the Freestyle classes. Strasser started the day off by scoring 69.042% aboard Rigaudon Tyme to take the honors in the Intermediaire 1 Freestyle CDI1*, and Strasser-Shostak followed up on her mother’s effort with a score of 64.208% on Deluxe Tyme in the Young Rider Freestyle.

“I was very happy with it,” Strasser said of her ride. “He was trying very hard. It’s getting better and better.”

“We’re going to do a couple more small tour events in the middle of the season and continue training him to the Grand Prix level,” she added. “This is just a way to go out in the ring and get confident. Once we know that he’s not worried about the ring any more, that he’s consistent in it, then we’ll go up. That’s the plan.”

Strasser-Shostak was pleased with Deluxe Tyme’s effort in his first freestyle competition. “I was happy that he dealt with the music well,” she commented. “I was disappointed that I missed the changes, but I hope I can get them better by the next show.”

Strasser-Shostak just recently took over the ride on Deluxe Tyme from her mother. “I’ve only ridden him for probably three and a half weeks, so it’s kind of a really big rush!” she said. “I want to continue getting him used to the ring. Two shows ago, he was just terrified of everything, so I’d say he came a long way already. I just want to get some mileage on him and then see how things go from there!”

Several other riders mentioned their hopes for the future with their talented young horses. “We are going all the way,” said Hans Werner Dressler, who scored 60.500% with Lotario to win the USEF Fourth Level Test of Choice. “This was his second show – we just had one show at First Level before this.” Lotario has already more than paid back on his owner’s investment: Dressler purchased the stunning gray gelding from Shelly Francis for just one dollar.

The USEF Third Level Test 3 pitted Maya Markowski on Diego against Chris Sanders on Lyric, and the two combinations battled it out for the win, each earning high scores from the judges. Sanders edged Markowski to take first, scoring 70.577% to Markowski’s 69.167%.

“He’s really sweet to ride and tries so hard,” Sanders said of the 7-year-old Lyric. “Last year we did First Level, when he was 6. I did my first Third Level a month ago. He doesn’t have that much show experience yet – we’re just trying to get him out and see what he’s like.”

Markowski was happy with her performance with Diego, although disappointed that she went off course at one point. “He was good! Except for my Alzheimer’s,” she laughed. She plans to compete Diego at the Prix St. Georges level in Canada this year.

Gabriel Meyer and Clapton JP

USEF First Level Test 3 winner Gabriel Meyer was thrilled with the 6-year-old Drum Major, who earned a 10 for his walk en route to a score of 76.774%. “He’s just a young boy – he just turned 6, and this is his first real season,” Meyer said. “He’s a wonderful, wonderful horse and it’s all about the miles at this point.”

Also scoring high were Holger Bechtloff and Clapton JP, who achieved an impressive 82.600% in the Young Horse Test for 6-Year-Olds.

“My ride was great,” Bechtloff said. “The horse always performs very, very well. He is so smart, intelligent and willing.”

“We are hopefully going to the 6-year-old championship,” he added.

The FEI or Equivalent Test of Choice class capped the day, providing a preview of several horses ready to make their marks in CDI competition. United States Dressage Federation President George Williams had the highest score of the class, riding Betsy Juliano’s Riccidoff to earn 66.118%. Riccidoff was the sales topper at the 2010 Performance Sales International (PSI) Auction in Ankum, Germany.

“I was pleased with him and with the things we’ve been working on,” Williams said. “He was very good and obedient with the wind. Overall I was very pleased with his attitude and how he tried in there. Right now we’ll continue with the Prix St. Georges and possibly do the Developing Horse later in the season.”

Megan Glynn put in a strong effort in her first Intermediaire 1 test to place second, earning 64.539% with Tyto. “The test went very well,” Glynn said. “This was my first I-1. I remembered it! Thank God!” she laughed. “We’ve been doing St. Georges all season, and we’re going into our first CDI in two weeks. Ramping it up – I’m really excited!”

Louisa-Marcelle Eadie finished third with Odin on 62.961% and sixth with Roseview’s Donna Classica on 61.649%. “We had a windswept ride!” she said after Odin’s test. “So we had to get his concentration back a little bit.” She noted that Odin is just turning 8 and was competing in only his second Prix St. Georges.

“I’m happy with him,” she added. “He’s schooling a lot of the Grand Prix now, but obviously he needs a lot more show experience. We’ll work on a lot of the small tour things for now and continue to work on his Grand Prix at home.”

Fourth-placed Carmen Elisa Franco was bringing Top Gun back to the show ring after a short hiatus. “We haven’t been to a show in a couple of months and it was really good coming back with him,” Franco said. “We are going to keep showing small tour this season and then go from there. He’s doing really well.”

Marta Renilla and Wec's Mistico
Marta Renilla and Wec’s Mistico

Marta Renilla, who traveled from Texas to compete in the Champions Cup Grand Prix classes with Presumido, rode Wec’s Mistico to fifth place with 61.842%. Renilla has trained the 7-year-old Wec’s Mistico since he was 5. “I’m very pleased with him,” she said. “He’s still very green but he listened to me and he was responsive.” Renilla added that she thinks the young horse has a bright future.

Sunday’s classes closed out a successful weekend of Champions Cup competition, highlighted by double wins by Lars Petersen and Mariett in Friday’s Grand Prix and Saturday’s Grand Prix Freestyle CDI-W.

Lars Petersen and Mariett Score Second Sweep at IHS Champions Cup CDI-W

Lars Petersen and Mariett.

Loxahatchee, FL – March 23, 2013 – Lars Petersen and Mariett proved they were consistently in the zone for the second time in two weeks when they delivered another one-two punch by taking the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Freestyle at the International Horse Sport Champions Cup CDI-W.  The pair achieved the same laudable results just two weeks ago at the Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W, also at the IHS Champions Park at Equestrian Estates.

Saturday’s Freestyle impressed the judges as the pair racked up a 74.950% to a circus-music themed freestyle to win the Champions Cup. Petersen and Mariett, Marcia Pepper’s 15-year-old Danish Warmblood mare, scored a 73.745% in Friday’s Grand Prix to set up the double-header.

“I was very happy with her because she is coming along, but I was not so happy with my canter work,” he said after the Freestyle. “It was a little bit against the leg and she had to work today. I think she gets a little shocked because it’s a difficult freestyle. Overall I’m very happy with her.”

Shelly Francis and Doktor proved their consistency once again by earning second place in the Freestyle with a 70.746%. Francis and Doktor placed second in Friday’s Grand Prix to add to their second place finishes in the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle at the Feb. 28-March 3 Dressage Derby.

Shelly Francis and Doktor
Shelly Francis and Doktor

“I’m really happy,” she said. “He’s staying consistent and improving and some things are rider-induced but he tries very, very hard. He wants to be a big superstar for next year!”

Not willing to rest on her fourth place laurels from Friday’s Grand Prix, Susan Jaccoma and Wadamur decided to spice up the Grand Prix Freestyle a bit. Strong gusts of wind picked up a tent and bounced it along the grass near Ring 1 where Jaccoma and Wadamur were performing their freestyle. The judges stopped the ride and, once the tent was secured, Jaccoma was permitted to begin her test from the beginning, with the scoring resuming once she reached her earlier stopping point. She placed third with a 70.325%, a score she believed to be her personal best.

“I don’t know what to say,” she laughed. “I’m speechless. Everyone who knows me knows it takes a lot to make me speechless.”

Spain’s Marta Renilla and Presumido performed a more traditional freestyle set to Spanish classical guitar music that showcased the P.R.E. stallion’s piaffe and passage, including a one-handed ending by Renilla. The pair edged up from seventh place in Friday’s Grand Prix with a score of 69.025% to place fourth.

“I’m very pleased with him. He really let me ride him,” Renilla said. “It is such a nice experience for me to be here and trying to work hard and keep learning. Getting him to feel at home is my goal.” She said she thinks Presumido feels the music. “It’s like a dance,” she explained.

In fifth place was David Marcus on Don Kontes, scoring a 68.775%. The team also placed fifth in the Grand Prix on Friday.

“I was much happier with him today,” Marcus said. “Today his heart felt like it was in the right place and he was really trying. There was a mistake in the ones and I tried to recover from that but I guess I did six instead of nine.”

Marcus added that he used to think that the freestyle music, borrowed from Chrevi’s Capital, would be too dramatic for Don Kontes, but as Don Kontes has become stronger, he has risen to the music. “It’s very powerful music from ‘Clash of the Titans,’ but now I think it suits him quite well,” Marcus said.

Marcus and Chrevi’s Capital, the horse he rode for Canada in the 2012 London Olympic Games, have been tapped as one of two horse and rider pairs invited to represent North America at the Reem Acra World Cup Final in Gothenburg, Sweden, next month. Fellow Olympic teammates, Jacqueline Brooks and D Niro, are the other pair with the highest World Cup qualifying scores for the North American League.

Brooks chose to not compete in the Champions Cup to give D Niro a rest. “In order to make a plan for him and if I want him to peak in Sweden again, we rested him this week and just hacked him out,” she said. “We decided as a team that if we get lucky and the stars align and we go to Sweden, then we have made the best plan for that.”

Diane Creech and Devon L
Diane Creech and Devon L

Another Canadian, Diane Creech with Devon L, came to the Champions Cup with her own plan. Creech wanted to make showing more routine for the horse. “Just going out and doing it,” she said. “It’s no stress. It’s just like training at home. So it just has to become normal for him. And it is slowly but surely becoming that way.”

The pair must be doing something right because they earned a 69.229% to win the Grand Prix Special. “He was a good boy. It’s just too unfortunate about the last pirouette,” she sighed. “We just lost our balance there, but I do have to say the rest was super.”

Collecting second place in the Grand Prix Special was Janne Rumbough with a 62.958% on Junior, a horse she trained herself. Rumbough’s goal in her Grand Prix CDI debut was to compete and obtain the judges’ feedback. “And then, I can have all summer to work on it because I want to go to Devon,” she said. “For me, it’s such a wonderful learning experience.” She added that Junior seems to enjoy competition and that it stems from her trainer, Mikala Gundersen, from Denmark. “She’s always so positive,” Rumbough said. “She’s the best-kept secret.”

Janne Rumbough and Junior
Janne Rumbough and Junior

“I’m so proud of her,” Gundersen said with a smile. “The goal this year was to do the Grand Prix. I was happy with the way he performed today. In the Special you are able to push a little bit more and I think Janne was able to do that.”

The final day of the International Horse Sport Champions Cup CDI-W features FEI Intermediaire I Freestyle and Young Rider Freestyle competitions and the Young Horse Test for 6-year-olds as well as USEF classes at First through Fourth Level.

Lars Petersen and Mariett Grab the Grand Prix at International Horse Sport Champions Cup CDI-W

Lars Petersen and Mariett claim first place in the Grand Prix. Photos by Susan J. Stickle.

Loxahatchee, FL – March 22, 2013 – Lars Petersen and Mariett are making a habit of winning top honors at the International Horse Sport (IHS) show grounds. This time, the pair clinched today’s Grand Prix at the International Horse Sport Champions Cup CDI-W with a 73.745%.

Just two weeks ago, they were double winners in the same venue at the Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W, collecting first place in both the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle. Denmark’s Petersen and Mariett, a 15-year-old bay Danish Warmblood mare owned by Marcia Pepper, also earned fifth place finishes in the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Freestyle at the World Dressage Masters CDI5* Palm Beach Jan. 23-27.

“It’s been a good season,” Petersen said. “The mare is getting better and better. She’s really coming along. She can be a woman with an opinion sometimes but I really enjoy riding her now.”

Mariett’s owner, Marcia Pepper, said she was euphoric. “The winning never gets old,” Pepper said. She added that the next step was showing at the Adequan Global Dressage Wellington CDI5* April 4-7. “After that, we are hoping to have the horse assessed and possibly doing the Danish Championships,” she said.

Running true to form, Shelly Francis and Doktor claimed second place in the Grand Prix with a 69.021%. Francis also notched two second-place finishes in the Grand Prix and Freestyle at the Dressage Derby. Doktor, who has been improving steadily throughout the season, is a 10-year-old bay gelding owned by Patricia Stempel.

Canada’s Diane Creech and Devon L took the third place slot with a 67.681%. Creech and Devon L, a 13-year-old chestnut Hanoverian gelding owned by Douglas W. Leatherdale, took second place in both the Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle at Wellington Classic Dressage’s Sunshine Challenge CDI3* Jan. 23-27.

Susan Jaccoma and Wadamur scored a 66.532% to capture the fourth place ribbon. Just last weekend, she and Wadamur, her own 13-year-old bay Hanoverian gelding, placed second in the Grand Prix Special at the WEF Dressage Classic CDI3*.

Canada’s David Marcus rode Don Kontes to score a 65.468% and secure the fifth slot. Marcus, and Don Kontes, a 13-year-old dark bay Swedish Warmblood gelding owned by Deborah Kinzinger, were third in the Grand Prix at the Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W.

Janne Rumbough in her first CDI Grand Prix took home sixth riding her own Junior, an 11-year-old gray P.R.E. gelding, with a 63.362%. Rumbough, an adult amateur, moved up the ranks with Junior to compete against the professionals today.

“He’s not really ready for it because he just started the Grand Prix, but where are you going to get five incredible judges to give an opinion so you can go home and work on it?” she asked. “It’s just the most wonderful learning experience for him and me.” She added that her goal is to go to Devon and this show provides her the chance to help her reach her goal.

Marta Renilla of Spain took home seventh place with a 61.957% in her first outing in the South Florida show circuit this season aboard Presumido, a 10-year-old gray P.R.E. stallion. Renilla traveled from Tomball, TX, a suburb of Houston, to also compete against the top performance riders at the show.

“I know it’s a big trip here but I want to see what it’s like to compete with the best riders,” Renilla said. “I want to see where I stand. For me, competition makes me ride better. That’s what I want to see – exactly where I am.”

Top scorer for the day was Canada’s Chris Sander earning a 77.237% aboard Lyric in Third Level Test 1. “He went in and did his job,” she said. She added that last month was the first time the duo had shown at that level and credited her trainer, Lars Petersen, with her performance today. “He is the only reason the horse is going so well,” she said.

She explained that she came to the Champions Cup because the showgrounds are beautiful, the judges are world-class and the atmosphere is welcoming. “I love this show,” Sander said.

In the FEI Prix St. Georges class, Shelly Francis took the lead aboard Danilo with a 71.360%. “I liked it,” she said. “We had a bauble or two but I liked it.”

Second place went to 15-year-old Juan Matute, Jr., riding Gasper and earning a 68.640%. Matute said that competing against such a talented group of professionals was inspiring. “It’s quite a feeling,” he said. “They are riders. Really, really tough riders.”

Saturday the IHS Champions Cup features a double-header of Grand Prix classes, with the Special in the morning and the Freestyle in the afternoon. Intermediaire 1 and several Young Rider, Junior Rider, and Pony classes complete the CDI offerings for the day. Spectators are welcome to watch the action at the beautiful IHS Champions Park, located on the Equestrian Estates in Loxahatchee.

All FEI Horses Pass Jog for the International Horse Sport Champions Cup CDI-W

David Marcus and Don Kontes.

Loxahatchee, FL – March 21, 2013 – The International Horse Sport (IHS) Champions Cup CDI-W hit the ground running both literally and figuratively with all the horses passing the FEI jog on the beautiful International Horse Sport Showgrounds in Loxahatchee, FL.

The horses and competitors settled into the comfortable surroundings featuring plenty of green spaces and a convivial atmosphere on the historic grounds that also play host to the Palm Beach Dressage Derby. Competitors chatted amiably as they waited for the jog, which all the FEI horses passed.

Noticeably missing were USA’s Tina Konyot and Calecto V and Canada’s Jacqueline Brooks and D Niro, who scratched from the competition. Just six days ago, Konyot said she was going to step it up a notch in the Champions Cup’s Saturday afternoon Grand Prix Freestyle. Konyot and Calectov V needed one more qualifying score to be eligible for the Reem Acra FEI World Cup in April in Gothenburg, Sweden.

This weekend’s IHS Champions Cup was to be the pair’s last chance to qualify as the show serves as the final North American League World Cup qualifying event.

Canada currently holds the top two spots with David Marcus and Chrevi’s Capital in first and Brooks and D Niro in second. Only two competitors will represent the North American league in Sweden. Currently, no contenders from the United States have emerged but this final qualifying show of the season will have competitors vying for a big win.

Lars Petersen and Mariett
Lars Petersen and Mariett

Marcus and Chrevi’s Capital also scratched and will not be competing in Friday’s Grand Prix but Marcus and Don Kontes, who placed third in the Grand Prix at the Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W, will be showing as scheduled. Lars Petersen and Mariett, double winners in the Grand Prix and the Grand Prix Freestyle at the Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W, will be trying to oust the competition along with Shelly Francis and Doktor, who notched two second-place finishes in the Grand Prix and Freestyle at the Dressage Derby.

Competition begins on Friday, March 22 and features FEI classes including the Grand Prix CDI-W as well as Intermediaire I and II, Prix St. Georges, Pony Team Test, and the Young Rider Team tests as well as a cadre of USEF tests. The FEI classes continue all weekend with the Grand Prix Special and the Grand Prix Freestyle on Saturday and National classes dispersed throughout the three-day event.

International Horse Sport Champions Cup Last Chance for U.S. Pair to Qualify for World Cup Final

Loxahatchee, FL – March 19, 2013 – Tina Konyot and Calecto V have competed lightly but successfully in South Florida this winter, and now their bid to compete in the Reem Acra FEI World Cup Final rests on their performance in the March 21-24 International Horse Sport Champions Cup CDI-W.

The IHS Champions Cup, held at the IHS Champions Park at Equestrian Estates in Loxahatchee, is the final World Cup qualifier for the North American League. Horse and rider combinations must post two scores in designated World Cup qualifying events to be eligible to compete. The two highest-scoring combinations earn a place at the Final, which is slated for April 25-28 in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Konyot and Calecto V earned their first qualifying score in the Feb. 14-17 Florida Dressage Classic CDI-W, part of the Adequan Global Dressage Festival. They were awarded 76.775% for their Grand Prix Freestyle performance, the highest North American League score recorded to date on the road to qualification for the 2013 World Cup.

After the most recent World Cup qualifier, the Feb. 28 – March 3 Palm Beach Dressage Derby CDI-W, Canadian duo David Marcus and Chrevi’s Capital stood atop the leaderboard for the North American League with an average of 73.975% for their top two qualifying Grand Prix Freestyle scores. Fellow Canadians Jacqueline Brooks and D Niro were in second with an average of 72.600%.

To obtain the required second qualifying score and secure a spot in the World Cup Final, Konyot must compete in the IHS Champions Cup and post a score high enough to overtake Brooks in the standings. With two Canadians currently holding the top places, Konyot and Calecto V represent the last U.S. hopes for the World Cup Final.

The International Horse Sport competitions have proven to be essential stops for riders hoping to qualify for the World Cup Final. Several riders put themselves on the leaderboard with strong results at the historic Palm Beach Dressage Derby. Jaimey Irwin and Lindor’s Finest took third and Diane Creech and Devon L claimed fourth after both pairs earned their second-highest qualifying scores of the season at the Dressage Derby. Brooks also collected a key score there on her way to her current second-place standing.

Brooks, Creech and Marcus all plan to return to Equestrian Estates for what is shaping up to be a competitive Grand Prix division. Along with his potential World Cup mount, Chrevi’s Capital, Marcus will ride Don Kontes, with whom he finished third in the Grand Prix at the Dressage Derby. The Grand Prix also features several competitors who have been successful on the winter circuit thus far, including Lars Petersen and Mariett, winners of the Grand Prix and Freestyle at the Dressage Derby, and Shelly Francis and Doktor, who were second in both classes.

Brooks is ready to compete in the World Cup Final if given the opportunity, but thinks Konyot stands a good chance of taking over her spot. “Once Tina gets another score, then it will be Tina, David, then me,” Brooks said. “I’m ready to go if one or the other decides not to, and I feel now that D Niro is ready to go. I’m very confident that he can go into big stadiums and actually enjoy it.”

Konyot has been planning for the World Cup for some time and thinks that her horse is ready to put forth his best performance. “I feel quite confident,” she said. “I planned my schedule many months out. I’m comfortable with my planning right now, and I think he’s in a good place.”

She added that the IHS Champions Cup has been a major goal for her on the road to the World Cup Final. “I consider every day important for me to prepare for something,” she said. “Next week [the Champions Cup] is even more important for me to prepare for, because I only have one qualifying score, of over 76%, and I need one more score for that.”

“I will probably put a little bit more pressure on him in this last competition,” Konyot continued. “We all have to peak at the right moment, so I’m headed in that direction at this present time.”

If Konyot and Calecto V deliver the performance Konyot is hoping for, spectators at the Champions Cup will have quite the show as she goes head-to-head with other top competitors and tries to earn her remaining qualifying score.

The Champions Cup will be held at IHS Champions Park, also known as the Derby Showgrounds, a beautiful property in White Fences owned by Mary Ann and Walter McPhail and managed by International Horse Sport Palm Beach. The IHS Palm Beach Managing Partners include FEI riders and trainers Ed Borresen and Lars Petersen, together with well-known show organizers Noreen O’Sullivan and John Flanagan.

Loxahatchee, FL (April 7, 2011) – When the International Equestrian Federation awarded dressage rider Caroline Roffman with the 2010 FEI Rising Star Award they said Roffman was “one of the brightest hopes of the U.S. Dressage community.” Roffman lived up to their prediction at the International Horse Sport Champions Cup CDI3* at Equestrian Estates in Loxahatchee, riding into the winner’s circle again and again and taking home high scores on several of her horses.

“I could not have imagined a show going much better for my horses than the Champions Cup. All of my horses made good progress from the last show and really showed me they are on track for success in their prospective levels,” Roffman said. “I showed three horses in two classes each and finished first in all six classes with qualifying scores.”

Roffman rode into the winner’s circle on Pie in the FEI Test of Choice class with a score of 69.412 and in the USEF Developing Horse class with a score of 71.618. “Pie did his first two Developing Horse classes and showed me he is very capable of doing this level quite well. He continues to gain confidence inside the show arena and I am excited for his future,” Roffman said.
