Americans Dominate at International Bromont

Bromont, Quebec – July 27, 2014 – The 2014 International Bromont’s final event, the World Cup Qualifier, ended with American riders dominating, as they took seven of the top ten places, including the Top Five.

Victory for Todd Minikus

Designed for testing both the technical and athletic abilities of participating riders, the course created by Venezuela’s Leopoldo Palacios, featured 13 obstacles for 16 efforts in a time allowed of 93 seconds.

Only five pairs entered successfully made it to the jump-off, including the winners of the July 20th Grand Prix, Denise Wilson and Winter.

Of the five duos that made it to the second round, only four would effectively participate: Olympic rider Leslie Howard was unable to compete in the jump-off because of a fall incurred in the warm-up ring, automatically placing fifth with Utah. Bromont native rider Mario Deslauriers gambled on speed to take first place with Scout de la Cense, but a fallen bar denied him the win. Denise Wilson/Winter and Candice King/Combina took the lead with two clear rounds. The last duo on the course, Todd Minikus and Quality Girl, earned the win with a course executed at full speed; they beat their closest opponents, Candice King and Combina, by more than three seconds.

The End of the 39th Edition

The July 26 & 27 weekend thus concluded the 39th edition of the International Bromont. However, the Bromont Olympic Equestrian Park will host the Quebec Provincial Dressage Championships as well as the Autumn Classic from September 12 to 14, 2014. FEI judges Elizabeth McMullen (FEI5*) and Lorraine Stubbs (FEI4*) will be part of the jury. Bromont, Quebec – July 25, 2014 – Olympic rider Jill Henselwood won the first international show jumping event in Bromont on July 17 with her mount Bolero HX in an unbeaten time of 40.95 seconds.

Welcome to Bromont!

For this FEI (Fédération Équestre Internationale) event, FEI4* Brazilian course designer Guilherme Jorge prepared a course with 12 obstacles for 15 efforts, with six rider/horses duos acceding to the jump-off including, Canadian Jill Henselwood and Kelley Robinson, American Derek Braun and Denise Wilson, Russian Liubov Kochetova as well as 2013 International Bromont World Cup Qualifier winner, Ireland’s Andrew Bourns.

Jill Henselwood is the first out on for the jump-off with Bolero HX, an 8-year-old Dutch half-blood. The pair establishes the time to beat with a clear round in 40.95 seconds. None of the following five teams will be able to take her out of first place. Andrew Bourns on Bart C came close to second place, but a bar down left them in fourth. American rider Denise Wilson, competing in Bromont for the first time, took second place with Quidam’s Hero, while Canadian rider Kelley Robinson and her mount Enzo, rounded up the Top 3.

Jaclyn Duff Honored

International Bromont wishes to acknowledge Jaclyn Duff’s presence on the Olympic Park’s site on Thursday July 17. Jaclyn will join Elizabeth Gingras, Jordan MacPherson and Jill Henselwood in Europe to complete the Canadian show jumping team. The four riders will participate in the CSI3* show in Ascona, Switzerland next week, from July 24 to 27, before heading for Nations’ Cup competition at CSIO 3* – W Bratislavia, Slovakia August 7 to 10, 2014.

Quebec Original World Cup: Irishman Andrew Bourns in First Place

Andrew Bourns and Gatsby – Photo By: Cealy Tetley.

Bromont, Quebec – July 28, 2013 – The International Bromont ended this Sunday July 28th with Irishman Andrew Bourns’ stunning victory in the Quebec Original World Cup qualifying event, at the Bromont Olympic Equestrian Park.

The course, designed by world renowned Leopoldo Palacios (VEN), comprised thirteen obstacles for sixteen efforts, with a time allowed of 85 seconds. Only three of the twenty-eight participating pairs made it to the jump-off, as there were many technical difficulties.

A first play-off round
The spa (a large obstacle) just before the triple combination proved to be almost insurmountable, forcing riders to play on the scope of the strides. Many had to forget about making it to the jump-off on that fence. The last double combination, with only one stride between both fences, did not leave many survivors. Derek Braun (USA) / Lacarolus, Liubov Kochetova (RUS) / Aslan and Andrew Bourns (IRL) / Gatsby were the only ones to qualify for the jump-off.

A battle of three
American Derek Braun is the first in the ring for the second round, where, with Lacarolus, he executes a clear round in 42.77 seconds. Liubov Kochetova (RUS) on Aslan gets a better time than the first pair, but a fallen bar takes away their chance at first place. Andrew Bourns (IRL), last competitor in the ring, goes for broke on his mount Gatsby, a calculated risk since his quick and precise turns allow him to best Braun’s time by over two seconds, giving him first place.

A sixth place for Angela Covert
Quebec’s Angela Covert Lawrence, who finished in second place in last Sunday’s Grand Prix, climbed to a 6th place ahead of Andrew Bourns and his second horse, New Boy de Logerie.

Montrealer David Arcand took 9th place with Vledder, just behind Mac Cone and Armor van de Rostal.

Modified Grand Prix: Richie Moloney Wins Top Honors in Bromont

Richie Moloney and Slieveanorra – Photo By: Cealy Tetley.

Bromont, Québec – July 27, 2013 – Irish rider Richie Moloney finishes in first place in the Modified Grand Prix event, on Saturday July 27 at the 38th edition of International Bromont.

Venezuelan course designer Leopoldo Palacios’ course comprised many technical difficulties, as the participants’ results reflect. Of the 34 pairs registered, none succeeded in executing a perfect round: the time allowed of 83 seconds combined with a highly challenging course resulted in no riders finishing on time could avoid jumping faults.

As the bars keep falling, it is evident that without a clear round, all the riders with only 4 jumping faults will come back for the jump-off, which is the case, incidentally, for American Christine McCrea and Québec’s François Lamontagne.

As the spectators are getting ready for a second round, Ireland’s Richie Moloney gets in the ring on his mount Slieveanorra. Very carefully, using prudence, he overcomes the course’s difficulties, but while he avoids jumping faults in this unique 1m45 event, he still gets over the time allowed. With only two more pairs to come, Richie Moloney and Slieveanorra keep their lead and end up winning first place in the Modified Grand Prix, offering $15,000 in prize money.

Next: Québec Original World Cup Qualifier
The International Bromont will end on Sunday July 28 with the presentation of the Québec Original World Cup qualifying event. This FEI sanctioned event, offering $100,000 in prize money, will feature all the international riders of the 38th edition of the International Bromont.

Andrew Bourns Claims Victory in International Bromont $33,000 FEI 1.50m Open Welcome

Andrew Bourns & Gatsby. Photo: Isabelle Mark Beaulieu.

Bromont, Quebec – July 18, 2013 – As the first FEI event concludes at the International Bromont, Andrew Bourns earns a well-deserved victory over Canada’s Olympian Jill Henselwood, by 2.05 seconds. The first round turned out to be challenging: only 6 teams make it to the jump-off, including Canadian Jill Henselwood on her two mounts, IV Ever and New Idol Z.

On a course designed by Brazilian Guilherme Jorge, with 12 obstacles for 15 efforts including three double combinations, Jaclyn Duff (CAN) on Pater Noster is first to execute a clear round. Jill Henselwood, a member of the 2008 and 2012 Olympic teams, on her first horse IV Ever, a twelve-year-old Dutch warmblood, forces a jump-off with a clear round in 80.38 seconds.

Ljubov Kochetova (RUS) and her horse Aslan join the two leaders for the second round, as do the duo of Mac Cone (CAN) and Amor Van de Rostal and Andrew Bourns (IRL) on Gatsby. Jill Henselwood also makes it to the jump-off on her second mount, a 9-year-old mare, New Idol Z.

First in the ring, Jill Henselwood and IV Ever establish the time to beat with a clear round in 40.23 seconds. They will stay on top for the next four riders, as no pair, including Hensellwood and New Idol Z, beats their time.

The entrance of the last pair, Ireland’s Andrew Bourns, changes the tone: they double the speed and take tight turns in order to best Canadian Olympic athlete Jill Henselwood. In the end, with a time of 38.18 seconds in the jump-off, Andrew Bourns steals the win.

Thursday’s 1m50 is only the first of five FEI (Fédération Équestre Internationale) sanctioned events. The International riders will come back for another 1m50 class on Friday July 19, as well as for the 1m60 Grand Prix on Sunday July 21. The week of July 24 to 28 will give the riders an opportunity to participate in the third 1m50 class before closing the competition with the World Cup qualifier Quebec Original on Sunday July 28.

Bromont, July 22, 2012 – Nicolas Dello Joio completes the only double clear round of the BonjourQuébec.com World Cup qualifying event at the International Bromont today, Sunday July 22.

A high-caliber event
The course, designed by Venezuelan Leopoldo Palacios, was made up of 13 obstacles for 16 efforts, including 3 double combinations (2 jumps counting as one). The time allowed of 80 seconds proved to be a handicap for many riders who did not make it to the jump-off. Of the 26 horse/rider teams participating, only 6 made it to the second round, representing: the United States (Leslie Howard, Peter Leone and Nicolas Dello Joio), Russia (Ljubov Kochetova), Canada (Jonathan Asselin) as well as Quebec (Angela Covert-Lawrence, from St-Lazare).

Wellington – July 26, 2012 – Peter Leone and his Lionshare Farm homebred, Wayfarer, nicknamed “The Future,” earned the win out of a field of 50 international competitors in the 1.25m Open Jumpers at International Bromont. Leone and Wayfarer also placed in the Derby de Vitesse/Speed Derby.

“By Nona Garson’s Languster out of a Holsteiner mare, he was born big and handsome. From day one, he showed character, range, scope and intelligence. He is just a genuinely, lovely talent,” said Leone about Wayfarer. “Because he was born on the farm, he has been my project. We know each other’s nuances and unspoken signals, so together we have the ability to turn and jump.”

Leone and Monica Carrera’s Lincourt Gino delivered the speed and accuracy required to put them in second place on the leader board in the 1.35m Open Jumpers. Then on Sunday, the pair was one of only six horse and rider teams to go faultless in the first round of the BonjourQuebec.com World Cup qualifying event. Leone and Gino, a big Irish Sporthorse gelding, have been in the money all spring and summer and were the second fastest of the four-faulters in the jump-off round, earning the duo third place honors.

Leslie Howard Steals the Victory in the Desjardins Speed Derby at International Bromont

Bromont, July 24, 2012 – American rider Leslie Howard, who won the first FEI Open Jumper 1m50 this week, presented by the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport, enjoys victory again in the Desjardins Speed Derby, winning with a comfortable six-second margin.

A high-energy course

The Speed Derby’s course, built in two rings, added a challenge for the horses by using the walkway to cross over. Twenty-two horse/rider teams participated, including Leslie Howard, a serious competitor where speed is involved; as well as St-Eustache rider François Lamontagne, renowned for his love of speed.

Leslie Howard, third in the order of go, posts a round with 4 penalty faults in 124.40 seconds, a time that will prove hard to beat. First contender to execute a clear round, Nathalie Mathers and her mount Windline lead the class with a respectable time of 126.53 seconds. François Lamontagne’s entry on Carriere Z almost took away the lead, posting the best time without penalty faults, until an unfortunate bar fell 2/3 into his round. With 119.28 seconds, he posts the second best time of the event. Leslie Howard’s return on her second mount, Lennox Lewis 2, marks a turning point: with a time of 120.30 seconds and a clear round, she takes possession of first place.
