Good Start for Julien Epaillard

© Marco Villanti for HUBSIDE JUMPING.

Julien Epaillard has lived up to his reputation, and wins, at a breakneck pace, in the opening round of the last CSI 4* of the year at the HUBSIDE JUMPING in Grimaud. Associated with Usual Suspect d’Auge, he is ahead of his compatriot Mathieu Billot, in the saddle on Bad Boy du Bobois, and the Brazilian Marlon Modolo Zanotelli, third at the controls of Icarus.

“You can say that I was a little lucky today: I made a nice ‘touch’ on the tackle which fortunately did not fall. There were a lot of serious competitors, and moving up to eleventh position, I knew I had to take all the risks. Which led, I think, Emanuele Gaudiano and Carlotta to the fault, important competitors when it comes to going fast. Emanuele to take all the risks – he had no choice. It’s fair game. When he comes before me, as was the case last week, he doesn’t hesitate. Last week, I played the game too much: I was faster but with two faults. It was my revenge today. Usual Suspect d’Auge is in great shape. In the Grand Prix du CSI 2*, like last week, I will be associated with Lima de Muze, and in the CSI4* Grand Prix, at Alibi de la Roque.”

Abdel Saïd, the Egyptian Rocket

© Marco Villanti for HUBSIDE JUMPING.

First to set off in a jump-off which counted fourteen qualified among the fastest riders and horses in the world, the Egyptian Abdel Saïd, associated with the French mare Arpège du RU, won with an express chronometer in the major event of the CSI 4* of the HUBSIDE JUMPING in Grimaud. He is ahead of the Northerner Nicolas Delmotte, second with Urvoso du Roch, and the Dutchman Jur Vrieling, on Fiumicino van de Kalevallei.

“Arpège du RU is a naturally very fast mare, which really makes life in a show easier. I had a plan for this jump-off event, which was to try everything. Sometimes you come to a jump-off and say, ‘I’m going to save the horse for the future.’ But in our case, I had foreseen that this event would be the biggest that Arpège would run this weekend and therefore, we had to give everything. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Yes, it worked perfectly. I really love this mare; she is very smart and loves to win. I have been riding her for two years, and together I have to say that we have already had some very good results. This year, it has been difficult for us to go to competitions, as for everyone; I was lucky to be taken on this fantastic contest that is the HUBSIDE JUMPING this weekend, so it was important to sign great performances. So far, I must admit that it is going very well.”

And Two for Jérôme Guery

© Ljuba Buzzola for HUBSIDE JUMPING.

Belgian Jérôme Guery wins in the “big” of the day at HUBSIDE JUMPING at the end of a jump-off for which twelve couples had managed to qualify. In the saddle on Quel Homme de Hus, he was more than a second ahead of Dutchman Jur Vrieling, associated with El Rocco, and Swede Peder Fredricson, at the helm of H&M Crusader Ice. Best French pair of the event, Kevin Staut and Visconti from Telman, finished fifth.

“The objective with Quel Homme de Hus was not necessarily this event, but Sunday’s Grand Prix. On the first lap, he jumped really well, so I hesitated to take part in the jump-off to try to keep it fresh for Sunday. But when I saw the layout of the jump-off, I thought it was a course that suited him quite well. Quel Homme is not the fastest horse. On the other hand, he has immense action and compared to the other horses in the jump-off, I managed to pull out one stride less on all lines. That’s how I saved time. When the jump-off matches it, I know that I can use his great gallop and that’s what I did today. I am for example the only one to have made six strides between obstacle 1 and obstacle 2, the only one in ten strides to go in the double: I really know that I can save time by taking advantage of his great action. In the Grand Prix, if we have the same teacher he play-off, this event may have been a good preparation.”

“To Be Honest, Carlotta Is Exceptional” — Emanuele Gaudiano

© Marco Villanti for HUBSIDE JUMPING.

In the major event of the CSI 4 * of the HUBSIDE JUMPING in Grimaud, the Italian Emanuele Gaudiano and his “exceptional” Carlotta 232 won ahead of the Frenchman Simon Delestre on Chesall Zimequest and the Swede Henrik von Eckermann on Forever.

“Carlotta jumped really well today. She’s in great shape. She felt a little peckish in her form coming out of confinement, but after a month, it was off again. To be honest, she’s exceptional. I have known that since the first competition in which we participated together. I remember it very well: she was five years old, it was in Samorin, and we participated in the events dedicated to her age category. She won four of the six races run! Speaking of today and the race won, I have to admit it was not that easy. The course was demanding, with thirteen efforts and three combinations. In the last combination. besides, I had to add a stride. Many riders placed eight strides; I had to put nine. Carlotta will not come out until Saturday, on the 145 jump-off. Chalou will be this week in the Grand Prix, and next week it’s probably going to be an eight-year-old horse.”

Seventy-Five Percent of the Top 30 at the CSI 4* of Grimaud Again

HUBSIDE JUMPING’s season is coming to a close with this second-last week of competition. But the elite of international show jumping has settled in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez this week once again, with almost seventy-five percent of the World Top 30 present in Grimaud for the CSI 4*.  In the CSI 2*, the spectators will be the first to attend the farewell of one of their favourite riders.

Open to everyone, free of charge. It is mandatory to wear a face mask.

The Gulf de Saint-Tropez and the HUBSIDE JUMPING de Grimaud have become the headquarters of world show jumping for good in just one summer. The French Riviera show will play host to all the best European riders once again for its tenth week of competition. 22 riders featured in the Top 30 are expected this weekend, among which the whole of the current Top 5 (Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat and Martin Fuchs, Germany’s Daniel Deusser, Sweden’s Peder Fredricson, and Belgium’s Pieter Devos). The French Olympic team gold medallists Pénélope Leprévost and Kevin Staut will also be competing, as well as the current World individual gold medallist, Germany’s Simone Blum.  The winners of the previous 4 and 5* Grands Prix will try to have a second win, like Steve Guerdat, Great Britain’s Scott Brash, Brazil’s Marlon Modolo Zanotelli, France’s Nicolas Delmotte, Ireland’s Denis Lynch, or even a third one, like the Netherlands’ Maikel van der Vleuten and Belgium’s Niels Bruynseels.

All of the classes will be broadcast live on https://grandprix.tv/fr.

Ex-cep-tio-nal Niels Bruynseels

© Marco Villanti pour HUBSIDE JUMPING.

He is undoubtedly THE rider of the week and perhaps THE rider of the year! Belgium’s Niels Bruynseels dominated Grimaud’s huge ring (again) in the HUBSIDE JUMPING’s fourth CSI 5* Grand Prix. The World number 15 on Gancia de Muze, a mount that commentators consider more and more to be “the best mare in the world currently”, finished ahead of his fellow countryman Jos Verlooy, the two-time Belgian national champion with Igor, and Italy’s Alberto Zorzi, who was third, with Vauban du Trio. The best French performance was achieved by Roger-Yves Bost, the Olympic team gold medallist, who was fifth with Sangria du Coty.

“Gancia always knows what to do and she likes winning. All I have to do is ride well! She jumped really well again today and I really felt that she jumped this course and this jump-off very easily and enthusiastically. Gancia is naturally very quick and she’s very experienced. She knows that it’s the Grand Prix and she tries to do everything possible to be the best. We go back a long way together. We have a really special bond. Additionally, in the first round, I didn’t really look at the other riders. I don’t really base myself on the others when I am riding, Garcia as she isn’t like any other horse. I know how I need to ride my round as soon as I walk the course.

“She’s a mare with a lot of character. When she’s at home, she likes to stay on her own, quietly. She’s not very keen on working on the flat, so we take her outside a lot. My team and I try to do everything for her on a daily basis. We do everything possible to make sure she’s in the best conditions. She’s a princess, the star of the stables and she knows it!”

And Two for Niels Bruynseels

© Marco Villanti for HUBSIDE JUMPING.

After a first victory in the CSI 4* Grand Prix of HUBSIDE JUMPING last July, the Belgian Niels Bruynseels wins again on the Côte d’Azur, in the Grand Prix of the CSI 3* of Grimaud. Associated with the mare Frenchy Vds, he is ahead of the Brazilian Marlon Modolo Zanotelli, also winner of a HUBSIDE Grand Prix (CSI 5* in August), in the saddle on Kalinka van de Nachtegaele, and the German Christian Ahlmann, current world thirteenth, at the helm of Solid Gold Z.

“Winning a Grand Prix is always nice, especially with a young mare! Frenchy is only ten years old and has very little experience at this level. She has only been with me for four months. So I’m really happy with her behavior tonight, in her first 3* Grand Prix! Winning here, among the best in the world, it’s not that easy but she did it very well! She’s naturally fast, but I have to manage her well in track because she has a lot of blood. This victory gives us confidence. I think that Frenchy will be a very high level mare. Tomorrow, I will be accompanied by Gancia de Muze for the 5* Grand Prix. I think the course will be difficult, technical, and with a fairly short time but Gancia is incredible and she has already won a lot. Tomorrow again, I will have to do my best to ride well (laughs)!”

Olivier Robert, Magistral in the Big Event of the Day

© Filippo Gabutti for HUBSIDE JUMPING.

Incredible dam! The French Olivier Robert riding Vangog du Mas Garnier wins in the major event of the CSI 5* of the HUBSIDE JUMPING in Grimaud, after a breathtaking jump-off. Some 18 competitors out of 48 had managed to qualify for this second stopwatch race, including some big names from the current world ranking. While the Belgian Gudrun Patteet on Sea Coast Pebbles Z was given the winner of an event for which she signed a perfectly crazy jump-off, the Amazon will be overtaken by the supersonic couple Olivier Robert; it will finally take third place behind Julien Epaillard, the only one that the public thought capable of beating Olivier Robert. Arrived three hundredths behind Aquitain, the Normand, associated with Alibi de la Roque, to whom speed succeeds in an immense majority of cases, will have to be content this time with second place.

“I am very happy with this victory tonight! We were in somewhat complicated conditions today. Because of the wind, there were no trees around the obstacles, the course was very light, the time quite short which made the first round quite difficult. But there is such a level here that it takes that to decide between us. At least fifteen horses at the start this evening have already competed in major championships. It’s not nothing.

“At the jump-off, I took the option in front of number 2 after the double, which few other riders have tried, but I don’t believe that this is where I won the race. Besides, without taking this option, Julien Epaillard was ahead of me by a second and a half at split time! On the other hand, I took a lot of risks on the last two obstacles. This time, I chose not to take the option because it didn’t seem like the best solution. You have to believe that I did well.

“Van Gogh jumped really well today. To be honest, I hadn’t planned on going so fast in a jump-off before Sunday’s Grand Prix. I am very happy, but I hope I did not handicap my Grand Prix. I will try to work my horse well tomorrow morning, so that he recovers, and then, ‘Forward!’”

Nicolas Delmotte Offers France Its First 4* Hubside Grand Prix of the Season

© Marco Villanti pour HUBSIDE JUMPING.

France had to wait until the seventh 4* or 5* Grand Prix of this extraordinary season of the HUBSIDE JUMPING to notch up a victory. Nicolas Delmotte and Ilex VP were the winners, ahead of Normandy’s Titouan Schumacher, and of the Italian rider used to being placed here in Grimaud, Emanuele Gaudiano.

“It was a really great Grand Prix. The first round’s track was really interesting. I was last to go in the jump-off, which is said to be a good position. But I saw that the riders that jumped clear were going faster and faster as the jump-off progressed, and that it was getting harder and harder to improve on the time to beat. I had to pull out all the stops, but I honestly didn’t think that I could beat Titouan. There were already five riders who had jumped double clear, so I had to take all the risks. And so I was already taking risks on the first fence! I chose to ride the long distance at the start of the round in 8 long strides and then everything went well afterwards. I felt that my horse was really in great shape, which made me feel confident. I took all the risks until the last line, as Titouan had already had a wonderful jump-off. As did Mégane Moissonnier and Emanuele Gaudiano. Ilex has proved he’s reliable once again. He’s back in fine form after being out last year for eight months. This summer, he took part in national classes, including those on the Grand National circuit, which I really like for preparing horses coming up through the ranks for high-level competition. He was second in Saint-Lô and third in Le Touquet. Next week, Urvose du Roch should be competing in Grimaud’s CSI 5* Grand Prix. The HUBSIDE JUMPING is an extraordinary opportunity for us as riders: we’ll never be able to thank Sadri Fegaier enough for giving us the possibility to do our sport at high-level.”

The Hubside Jumping Grand Prix 2* for Steve Guerdat

© Marco Villanti for HUBSIDE JUMPING.

The world number 1, the Swiss Steve Guerdat, wins the CSI 2* Grand Prix of the HUBSIDE JUMPING in Grimaud, in the saddle on Ulysses des Forêts. He is ahead of the Belgian Jérôme Guery, associated with Eldorado Wp Z, and the French Roger-Yves Bost, on Cassius Clay Vdv Z.

“Ulysses des Forêts is a mare that does not lack experience; she was there for that; it was what was planned for her. I preferred to put her in the Grand Prix of 2* rather than in intermediate events of the CSI 5*. She was great; she is a very competitive mare in these events and I always try to take her with me when I have room. She will come back here a few times in Grimaud, that’s for sure! Like I said, it’s good to have young horses on one side but also other more competitive ones to try to win a few events (laughs). It’s the last day of the competition and it’s about my first victory this week at HUBSIDE JUMPING. It’s always nice, especially since my horses jumped well this week but I haven’t always ridden well, so it’s better to finish like this.”
