Horse & Country TV Documentary Takes Viewers inside the World Famous Spanish Riding School

20 June 2014 – An unprecedented television documentary showcasing the world’s oldest riding establishment, the famous Spanish Riding School of Vienna, is to be broadcast by Horse & Country TV (Sky 280 and online) at 9pm on Sunday 29 June 2014.

Inside the Spanish Riding School takes viewers behind the scenes of the 440-year-old equestrian institute and follows them on tour in Malmo, Sweden, giving viewers a unique insight into the history and traditions of the Classical Dressage the school is so famous for. It is the first time a television channel has been given access to the historical institute on this level.

The Spanish Riding School of Vienna is the oldest of its kind in the world. First commissioned in 1565, it takes its name from the Spanish horses that originated from the Iberian Peninsula during the 16th century and were considered especially noble, spirited and suited for the art of classical horsemanship. Today there are 72 Lipizzaner stallions at the Vienna stables delighting over 300,000 visitors every year with their dazzling performances.

In the hour-long documentary, H&C’s Swedish presenter Sara Silfverberg takes viewers on a journey to discover the traditional methods used by the Spanish Riding School – developed all those years ago to aid war horses in battle – that now form the spectacular show that thousands of tourists travel from all over the world to see. As a prelude to the forthcoming Spanish Riding School UK Tour which will visit Sheffield Arena and London’s SSE Wembley Arena later this year, Silfverberg shadows the school as they go on tour to Malmo, Sweden and gains captivating insights from the riders, horses and tour management.

H&C TV Head of Programming, Jonathan Rippon, said: “The Spanish Riding School is an institution steeped in history and tradition with a reputation for excellence which transcends far beyond the world of equestrianism. This documentary provides a fascinating insight into the lives of those who work and travel with the school and we hope that through the broadcast we’ll be able to share this with our viewers.”

Inside the Spanish Riding School will be aired for the first time at 9pm on Sunday 29 June 2014 on Horse & Country TV (Sky channel 280). For further broadcast times, see our schedule listings at horseandcountry.tv/tv.

Horse & Country TV broadcasts in the UK and Ireland, the Netherlands, and Sweden, and can be found on the web at www.horseandcountry.tv, www.horseandcountrytv.nl, and www.horseandcountrytv.se. Olympic Champions Ensure Golden Evening for New Horse & Country TV Venture

09 April 2014 – The first in a series of live events organised by the specialist international equestrian sports and lifestyle network Horse & Country TV has been crowned a “roaring success.” A sell-out crowd and a host of equestrian and British Dressage celebrities flocked to the Bacon Theatre at Dean Close School in Cheltenham last Thursday for an evening with London 2012 Dressage Gold medallists Carl Hester MBE and Charlotte Dujardin OBE.

‘An Evening with Carl and Charlotte’ hosted by H&C TV presenter Jenny Rudall was a sell-out and those lucky enough to bag a golden ticket and make the journey to the Bacon Theatre were not disappointed. The charismatic duo had the audience in fits of laughter one minute, with mouths open wide in amazement the next as they regaled them with their life stories and other anecdotes.  The live event was complemented in the theatre by screens showing clips from H&C TV programming which has followed the duo’s progress since Charlotte first arrived at Carl’s yard in 2007.

Carl Hester MBE and Charlotte Dujardin OBE were both part of GB’s Gold medal winning Dressage team at the London 2012 Olympics. Charlotte Dujardin also won Gold in the Individual Dressage.

“Whether we are competing or sitting in a theatre it’s always a pleasure to be in front of a keen and enthusiastic audience, and Charlotte and I had a fantastic evening at the Bacon Theatre,” said Carl Hester MBE.

Charlotte Dujardin OBE added:

“We were received so warmly by everyone and this definitely helps when Carl and I give insights into our journey. It’s a testament to London 2012 that there’s still such a buzz around the event nearly two years on. Winning gold was one of our proudest moments and something we never tire of talking about so we both thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the event and having the audience and our team there.”

Jonathan Rippon, Head of Programming at H&C TV, added:

“It was a fantastic evening, with two Olympic gold medallists; the tickets were like gold-dust and it’ll be television gold when it’s broadcast on H&C TV in June.”

“H&C TV is a well-established broadcast brand and our audience increasingly follows us online as well, but as a business we also want to embrace new opportunities that complement our existing range of activities.

“‘An Evening with Carl and Charlotte’ was H&C TV dipping its toe into the water of branded live events and it proved a roaring success; we couldn’t have been happier. Carl and Charlotte have great chemistry and covered a huge amount of ground over the two-hour event with a few eyebrow-raising revelations seeing the light of day!  Everyone seemed to leave smiling so it was a great way to start off this new venture with what is the first of many of these types of events for H&C TV.”

Horse & Country TV is available on Sky Channel 280 in the UK and Ireland, and on PC and mobile devices from www.horseandcountry.tv/everywhere.

Black Beauty Returns to British Television with Horse & Country TV

11 February 2014 – “The New Adventures of Black Beauty”, the sequel to the iconic original British children’s TV series “The Adventures of Black Beauty”, is set to return to our screens this spring, courtesy of Horse & Country TV.

H&C TV has acquired the rights to Series 3 and 4 of the popular children’s television drama. The third series first aired in 1990 on ITV, and was an immediate hit among families and young children.  Set in New Zealand 20 years after the original, the series revolves around the character of Victoria Denning, a free-spirited young girl whose inherent curiosity and penchant for challenging the status quo is forever getting her into scrapes of one sort or another.  As a wild black horse presents himself at the farm where she lives, Vicky’s bond with the namesake of the original Black Beauty is established.

Jonathan Rippon, Head of Programming for H&C TV, said of the acquisition: “Everyone remembers the theme tune from Black Beauty, and now for the first time in 15 years it is back on British television.  We’re sure that fans who watched Black Beauty the first time around will be delighted to see the show again, and that it will also gain a firm following among a younger audience not yet familiar with this wonderful cast of characters.  Black Beauty also reminds those viewers who aren’t necessarily equestrian fans of the many inspiring stories about our special connection with horses.”

The series’ famous theme tune, “Galloping Home”, is an enduring part of the Black Beauty experience. The catchy melody written by Denis King will be instantly recognisable to Black Beauty fans, including those who may not have seen the show for 20 years or more.  As evidence of its cult status among British horse lovers, TV presenter Clare Balding even chose the song as one of her eight BBC Radio 4 ‘Desert Island Discs’ when she appeared on the programme in December 2013.

The return of Black Beauty adds to Horse & Country TV’s reputation for offering UK television viewers an alternative to the often-repeated formulas of talent and reality shows.  “The New Adventures of Black Beauty” premieres on Monday 14 April 2014, and will broadcast daily at 11am and 5pm.

Horse & Country TV is available on Sky Channel 280 in the UK and Ireland, and on PC and mobile devices from www.horseandcountry.tv/everywhere.

One Year On from the Horsemeat Scandal

Horse & Country TV Broadcasts HRH The Princess Royal’s Speech Challenging Horse Lovers to Think Again

Marking the anniversary of the horsemeat scandal, Horse & Country TV will broadcast a special programme featuring HRH The Princess Royal’s speech from the recent World Horse Welfare Conference, which considered ‘Horses in the Next Generation’.

This is the first time The Princess Royal’s speech, in which she suggested that horse welfare could be improved by the commercial sale of horsemeat in UK supermarkets, will have been shown in full on national television.  The show will premiere on Horse & Country TV on Wednesday, January 15.

In her speech, Princess Anne suggested British attitudes towards eating horsemeat may have to change in the face of Britain’s ‘Horse Crisis’ where almost 7,000 horses are at risk of neglect and abandonment.

The former Olympic eventer said: “Should we be considering a real market for horsemeat and would that reduce the number of welfare cases, if there was a real value in the horsemeat sector? I chuck that out for what it’s worth because I think it needs a debate.”

She continued: “As I was reminded not so long ago by somebody who travelled in France, the most expensive piece of meat in the local butcher was a fillet of horsemeat.”

“We’ve got to understand whether that value has a part to play in how we reduce welfare cases, because… if it has real financial value then you look a bit further ahead in the way in which you look after your animals.”

The comments rekindled the debate that roiled the UK during the early part of 2013 after the discovery of horse DNA in processed food products on sale in UK and Irish supermarkets, resulting in a series of product recalls and throwing the spotlight on the food industry’s supply chain, testing procedures and food labelling.

The second half of the 30-minute show features a panel discussion from the same event, in which Environment Minister, Lord de Mauley, former Olympic eventer Ian Stark, British endurance rider Anna Williams and H&C TV presenter Jenny Rudall debate a range of horse welfare topics.

The 30-minute programme will be aired on Horse & Country TV (Sky Channel 280) on Wednesday 15 January 2014 at 7:30pm.

Horse & Country TV to Air Farming Sunday Offering Insight into Today’s Modern British Farms

3 May 2013 – On Sunday 5 May at 5.00pm and 9.00pm Horse & Country TV (Sky Channel 280) will broadcast the magazine show, Farming Sunday, which looks at the technologies and techniques adopted by British farmers that are currently employed on the land to produce our food.

Since the eruption of the horsemeat scandal, the provenance of our food and how it’s produced has never been more topical; however, there is little information about how farmers really operate and what modern farms actually do.

Farming Sunday covers the main agricultural sectors, from wheat production through to dairy and livestock farming. The programme gives a true insight into what is currently happening in farming, which is enabling British farmers to be some of the most productive and welfare-sensitive in the world.

Head of Programming for Horse & Country TV, Jonathan Rippon, said, “This new series of Farming Sunday offers today’s farmer a wealth of knowledge concerning a vast array of topics.”

Rippon continues, “From veterinary advice from industry experts, to independent reviews of machinery, to economics and sustainability, Farming Sunday is a must-watch for those involved in every aspect of British farming.”

Farming Sunday will air on the Channel on Sunday 5 May at 5.00pm and 9.00pm, and a new episode will play out in those slots each week.

Horse & Country TV offers a rich, mixed schedule of programming for fans of equestrian sports and country living.  The channel covers all equestrian disciplines including showjumping, dressage and evening, and other topics such as natural horsemanship, lifestyle, travel, food and documentaries.
