Hagyard Equine Medical Institute to Still Offer Bonus for 2020 Hagyard Challenge Series

Lexington, Ky. – September 10, 2020 – Hagyard Equine Medical Institute announced it will still offer a “Leading Rider Award” as part of the 2020 Hagyard Challenges Series even with the further reduction of events as a result of COVID-19.

On August 4, 2020 Kentucky Horse Shows, LLC and US Equestrian announced the cancellation of Bluegrass Festival (Aug. 11-16), KHJA (Aug. 19-23), and USEF Junior Hunter National Championship – East Coast (Aug. 23-24) scheduled to take place at the Kentucky Horse Park. The Bluegrass Festival and KHJA were to be part of the 2020 Hagyard Challenge Series Events. With the changes, the events comprising The Series now will be as follows:

  • Kentucky Summer Horse Show – July 23rd
  • Kentucky Summer Classic – July 30th
  • Kentucky National Horse Show/The Betsy Grand Prix – September 20th

Because the Series is being further reduced to three events from its usual seven, Hagyard announced that the “Leading Rider Award” will be reduced, proportionately, to $15,000. Hagyard had announced a similar reduction in the prize when the Series was originally reduced from seven to five events.

“We’re just rolling with the changes,” said Elise Jackson, Tour Experience & Event Coordinator for Hagyard. “The competitors are being flexible and bringing their best to the events that are able to be held, and we believe they should be rewarded for Going the Distance. We’re just scaling the award to reflect the number of events that are ultimately included.”

In the Hagyard Challenge Series, competitors Claire McKean and Shane Sweetnam are battling closely in the standings, but several others are not far behind.

Previously, Hagyard announced that the theme for the 2020 event would be Going the Distance. “We have worked with the Kentucky Horse Park to go the extra mile this year and find ways to put on the event in spite of some challenges,” Jackson had explained. “These new changes won’t deter us.”

One other group has also been willing to “Go the Distance” this year, the Hagyard Challenge Series sponsors. In a year marked by changes an economic uncertainty, title sponsor MWI Animal Health, Audi of Lexington, Central Kentucky Ag Credit, and Hagyard Pharmacy continued to honor their commitment.

“As we’ve mentioned before, the Leading Rider Award money is tied to our sponsors,” said Jackson. “This year, it would have been easy – and very understandable – if they had dropped out. We can’t thank them enough.”

Hagyard Equine Medical Institute Moving Forward with 2020 “Hagyard Challenge Series”

Lexington, Ky. – July 21, 2020 – The Kentucky Horse Shows LLC and Hagyard Equine Medical Institute are pleased to confirm they will be moving forward with the “Hagyard Challenge Series” in 2020.  Although the spring shows typically included in the Series were canceled due to COVID-19, Hagyard is committed to “going the distance” in hosting the remaining events in the 2020 Hagyard Challenge Series.

They will be held at the following events:

  • Kentucky Summer Horse Show – Thursday, July 23rd
  • Kentucky Summer Classic – Thursday, July 30th
  • Bluegrass Festival Horse Show – Friday, August 14th
  • KHJA Horse Show – Saturday, August 22nd
  • Kentucky National Horse Show/The Betsy Gala – Sunday, September 20th

With fewer events in the Series, the “Leading Rider Award” for 2020 will be reduced from $50,000 to $25,000. “The award money is tied to our sponsors,” said Elise Jackson, Tour Experience & Event Coordinator for Hagyard. “Since there were fewer events in the series, and considering restrictions USEF has placed on sponsor attendance, it seemed necessary to reduce the Award for 2020.”

With the late start to the show season, Hagyard has also announced a slight change to the method of tabulating points to determine the Leading Rider of the Series. Previously, riders that rode multiple horses earned points based on the placings of each horse they rode in each class. While they can still enter multiple horses, only the points earned from their highest placed horse in each class in the series will count for the Leading Rider Award point tally.

Due to the restrictions and limitations to the 2020 show season COVID-19 has had on the industry, this may provide a more diverse and interesting twist to see which rider will be able to go the distance and come out on top in the Series. Each event in the Series will be available to view via live stream through Kentucky Horse Shows, LLC’s website. Details will follow on how you can view and participate in the excitement safely from a distance as the event approaches.

Hagyard Equine Medical Institute has hosted the Challenge Series since 2006. The Series is held each spring and summer at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The rider who accumulates the most points in the Series is presented the Leading Rider Award during the Kentucky National Horse Show in September. The Series typically feature a FEI CSI2* and a CSI3*, making riders eligible to earn points toward international show-jumping rankings.

Hagyard announced that the theme for the 2020 event would be Going the Distance. “The word ‘distance’ has been such a prominent part of our life this year, we wanted to put a more positive spin on it,” Jackson explained. “We feel like this theme truly embodies what we want to do with this event, and the Hagyard brand itself. We have worked with the Kentucky Horse Park to go the extra mile this year and find ways to put on the event in spite of some challenges. But that’s what we do for our customers every day, so it’s really inherent in who we are as an organization.”

Lorcan Gallagher Earns 2018 Hagyard Challenge Series $50,000 Leading Rider Bonus

Lexington, Ky. – Oct. 15, 2018 – After capturing top prizes in grand prix events throughout the spring and summer, Ireland’s Lorcan Gallagher earned the $50,000 Leading Rider Bonus during the 2018 Hagyard Challenge Series.

The Hagyard Challenge series consisted of seven grand prix classes held during the 2018 show series at the Kentucky Horse Park. The series concluded with the $65,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic during the Kentucky National Horse Show. Following that exciting competition, Gallagher was announced as the winner of the $50,000 Leading Rider Bonus and presented with the cash prize by the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute.

Gallagher calls Lexington home for part of the year at Spy Coast Farm, and being able to win in the horse capital of the world made the victory that much more exciting. “It’s so great,” he said. “I wasn’t going to totally chase it, but after getting a few early results that did become a bit of a goal. To be able to pull it off at the end was really nice. We showed basically every show here. It’s great fences, always good course designers there, and the footing is always really good. It was great to be able to show at home basically every few weeks in the summer.”

Gallagher took home both first and third place during August’s $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic riding Hunters Conlypso and Charlie, respectively. His consistent results throughout the rest of this year’s Hagyard Challenge Series culminated in the leading rider bonus which he received at the Kentucky National Horse Show.

“Thank you to Hagyard for their support and to Kentucky Horse Shows. They really do a great job at running the shows; they’re very hospitable. And then of course the team at Sweet Oak, Shane and Ali Sweetnam – just thank you to them for their support and the horses,” Gallagher said.

Finish just behind Gallagher was Alex Granato coming in second place, while Darragh Kenny earned the third place spot in the rankings.

Vale Widens Hagyard Challenge Series Leads, Hesslink Tops Hallway Feeds Standings

Lexington, Ky. – May 23, 2016 – Aaron Vale has widened his early lead in the 2016 Hagyard Challenge Series by claiming the second place prize for the second week in a row during Thursday’s $34,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic CSI3*. Vale, who has been competing at the Kentucky Horse Shows for 28 years, piloted Quidam’s Good Luck to a double-clear round, finishing just shy of the winner, Todd Minikus and Quality Girl. The Kentucky Spring Classic also featured the second event for the $5,000 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby series, where Geoffrey Hesslink earned the second place prize to further his lead in the standings.

During the first event of the Hagyard Challenge Series Vale placed second and third to claim the early lead. Pablo Barrios of Venezuela continues to hold the second place position in the standings after claiming the victory in the first leg of the Series aboard ASD Farfala. Todd Minikus and Quality Girl are just 30 points behind Barrios after winning Thursday’s highlight event.

The Hagyard Challenge Series consists of seven grand prix classes to be held during the 2016 show series at the Kentucky Horse Park. Following the final event, a cash prize of $50,000 will be awarded to the rider accumulating the most points throughout the series as well as a $10,000 prize for the reserve champion.

Sydney Shulman Takes Over Hagyard Challenge Lead

Lexington, KY – August 3, 2015 – Sydney Shulman has taken the Kentucky Summer Series by storm, and now she has taken over the lead in the 2015 Hagyard Challenge Series with her victory is Thursday’s $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic. In the Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby Series, professional rider David Beisel is tied with junior rider Lilly French for the leading honors.

On Thursday, Shulman piloted Wamira to victory during the Hagyard Challenge Series event, and also picked up sixth place with Quidam 13. Combined with previous ribbons, Shulman has taken a solid lead over David Beisel who is ranked second after placing third on Thursday. Venezuela’s Andres Rodriguez sits third overall after earning top ribbons during the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows.

The Hagyard Challenge Series consists of seven grand prix classes to be held during the 2015 show series at the Kentucky Horse Park. Following the final event, a cash prize of $50,000 will be awarded to the rider accumulating the most points throughout the series, as well as a $10,000 prize for the reserve champion.

David Beisel captured his second victory of the series on Sunday to sit atop the standings, but he is not alone. Junior rider Lilly French has earned top ribbons in three of the events, including a second place with Candor during the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, and is now tied with Beisel for the top spot. Only 25 points behind Beisel and French is professional rider Molly Sewell in third place, followed by junior rider Kelli Cruciotti in fourth place.

The five-part series will feature a $5,000 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby throughout the spring and summer, and at the conclusion of the series the Leading Rider Awards for the Series will be presented. The $15,000 Hallway Feeds Leading Rider Awards will present a $10,000 cash prize to the professional rider accumulating the most points in the five classes that make up the Series. The amateur rider and junior rider accumulating the most points will each receive a $2,500 cash prize.

Kelli Cruciotti Tops Hallway Feeds Standings

Lexington, KY – July 28, 2015 – This spring, Andres Rodriguez took over the lead in the 2015 Hagyard Challenge Series with combined second and fourth place finishes in May, but three riders sit tied for second and are hot on his heels in a close second. In the Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby Series, junior rider Kelli Cruciotti continues to top of the standings after earning two second place ribbons during the Kentucky Spring Horse Shows.

In the Hagyard Challenge Series, Bedoya picked up the most recent victory during the Kentucky Summer Horse Show on Quattro, and is tied for second with the winners from the Kentucky Spring Series, Emanuel Andrade of Venezuela and Argentina’s Ramiro Quintana. Rodriguez is in the lead by just 20 points. The Hagyard Challenge Series consists of seven grand prix classes to be held during the 2015 show series at the Kentucky Horse Park. Following the final event, a cash prize of $50,000 will be awarded to the rider accumulating the most points throughout the series, as well as a $10,000 prize for the reserve champion.

The Series concludes with the $65,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic during the Kentucky National Horse Show. Following that exciting competition, the winner of the $50,000 Leading Rider will be announced and presented with the prize by the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. New this year, Brook Ledge Horse Transport will be awarding a $1,000 shipping voucher to the Leading Rider and a $500 shipping voucher to the Reserve Champion Leading Rider.

The Kentucky Summer Horse Show also hosted the second event in the Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby Series. After earning second place during both of the spring horse shows with Totem Pole, Kelli Cruicotti holds the lead. There are four junior riders at the top of the standings, with Lily French ranked second over Helen Voss in third and Emma Kurtz in fourth. Professional riders Molly Sewell, David Beisel, Steve Heinecke and Sarah Sturges are tied with Amateur-Owner rider Missy Luczak-Smith for fifth place.

The five-part series will feature a $5,000 Hallway Feeds USHJA National Hunter Derby throughout the spring and summer, and at the conclusion of the series the Leading Rider Awards for the Series will be presented. The $15,000 Hallway Feeds Leading Rider Awards will present a $10,000 cash prize to the professional rider accumulating the most points in the five classes that make up the Series. The amateur rider and junior rider accumulating the most points will each receive a $2,500 cash prize. Riders will receive points only on their highest placed horse in each of the classes. The awards will be presented at the conclusion of the Hallway Feeds class at the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show on August 16, 2015. Returning for the second year, the winning professional rider will win a free flight for a horse in the continental U.S., thanks to Tex Sutton.

Lexington, KY – April 30, 2015 – The Kentucky Spring Horse Shows will be getting underway next week at the Kentucky Horse Park, and one of the highlight events will be the kick-off of the 2015 Hagyard Challenge Series, sponsored by the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute. The Hagyard Challenge Series consists of seven grand prix classes to be held during the 2015 show series at the Kentucky Horse Park. Following the final event, a cash prize of $50,000 will be awarded to the rider accumulating the most points throughout the series, as well as a $10,000 prize for the reserve champion.

The Kentucky Spring Horse Show, held May 6-10, 2015, will feature the lead-off event on Thursday evening with the $34,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic CSI2*. The top riders from across the nation will gather to compete over a challenging course and vie for the winning title and valuable points toward the $50,000 Leading Rider Award. The Kentucky Spring Classic, May 13-17, 2015, will host the second $34,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic CSI3* on Thursday, May 14.

Later in the year, four more Hagyard Lexington Classic grand prix events will be held during the Kentucky Summer Horse Show, the Kentucky Summer Classic, the Bluegrass Festival Horse Show and the KHJA Horse Show. The Series concludes with the $65,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic during the Kentucky National Horse Show. Second Year in a Row – Barrios Wins 2014 Hagyard Challenge Series Leading Rider Award

Lexington, KY – October 20, 2014 – After dominating the Hagyard Challenge Series for the second year in a row, Venezuelan rider Pablo Barrios has captured the $50,000 Hagyard Leading Rider Award. He and his talented mounts earned the winning honors in four of the seven Hagyard Lexington Classic events, which coupled with other top placings, gave Barrios an early lead in the standings that he never relinquished.

“Winning this bonus means a lot in different ways,” noted Barrios. “The first is that shows that you have been a consistent rider during all of the shows in Lexington. Also, the money is big help, especially for me because I own a lot of my own horses. There are a lot of expenses starting the year in Wellington and the bonus is a wonderful help, and I am very thankful to Hagyard for sponsoring it.”

The Hagyard Challenge Series is a summer-long series of seven show jumping events at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. Barrios’ consistent efforts helped him accumulate 1,420 points, enough to almost double the total of second place finisher Shane Sweetnam of Ireland at 730 points.

New this year though, the Hagyard Challenge Series introduced an additional $10,000 rider bonus for the runner-up. Sweetnam collected the secondary bonus, taking home top ribbons throughout the series and winning the Hagyard Lexington Classic during the Kentucky Summer Classic with Bijzonder.

“Two years ago I won the bigger bonus and I think it’s great for the riders because it gives them an extra incentive to compete in those classes and there is a very high standard in those grand prix events,” explained Sweetnam. “It’s great that they added the secondary bonus this year. It looked like Pablo had it wrapped up halfway through, and it gives the other riders like me more incentive to keep going.”

Pablo Barrios Furthers Lead in Hagyard Challenge Series Standings

Lexington, KY – August 19, 2014 – Pablo Barrios has all but wrapped up the $50,000 Leading Rider Bonus in Hagyard Challenge Series, but the race for the $10,000 bonus being awarded to the second place finisher is just heating up. Barrios and Antares captured the top prize during Friday’s $25,000 Hagyard Lexington Classic, which coupled with three other wins gives him a clear lead in the standings.

However, Friday’s second place finisher Ramiro Quintana is just 150 points away from Ireland’s Shane Sweetnam in the standings. Sweetnam took home the victory during the Kentucky Summer Classic, but Quintana’s consistent efforts have also kept him in the running for the second place spot and a chance for $10,000.

The Hagyard Challenge Series is a summer-long series of seven show jumping events at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The Stonelea Ring, Murphy Ring, Walnut Ring, Stonelea/Murphy Schooling Ring, the Alltech Arena and the Rolex Stadium have Otto Sport footing consisting of fine sand and synthetic fiber on pvc mats. The Claiborne, Annex, and Covered Arena (old) rings’ footing consists of a sand cushion on limestone base. The dimensions of the competition areas are as follows:

To reserve a campsite at the Kentucky Horse Park for any of the horse shows, please call the Campground store at (800) 370-6416 or 859-259-4157 or email Sherry Logan at sherryd.logan@ky.gov. Be specific as to the show name and the dates you wish to stay. Check-in time is 2:00 p.m. and check-out is 12:00 noon. You must make arrangements with the Campground store if you plan to arrive earlier than 2:00 p.m. or stay later than 12:00 noon. Vehicles that are not removed from a campsite by check-out time will be towed.
