Penny Brennan and Japan Win the Opening $25,000 Foley RV Center Grand Prix

Penny Brennan and Japan fly over an oxer in today’s $25,000 Foley RV Center Grand Prix.

It was ladies’ day at the Gulf Coast Winter Classic! A field of world class, high performance grand prix riders, all of whom are women, competed for the cash in the $25,000 Foley RV Center Grand Prix, presented by EMO.

Eight advanced to the jump-off, but it was Penny Brennan of Ocala, Florida and her own Japan who took home the championship honors.

The grand prix course was very welcoming and the crowds gathered around the world class grand prix arena under beautiful sunny skies.

The jump off time was set at 45 seconds. Holly Shepherd of Grand Bay, Alabama was first to go in the jump off in the irons of Dejan Krunic’s Belle Clara DKS. The pair finished clean and set the new time to beat at 33.177 seconds.

Amanda Forte of Glenmoore, Pennsylvania followed Shepherd in the irons of HHS Louis, owned by Cerulean Stables, LLC. While the pair turned in a clean round, their time of 37.028 seconds would see them finish in fifth place overall.

Brennan and her own Sun Tzu entered the ring and turned in the fastest four fault round in a time of 31.352 seconds which would see them finish in sixth place overall.

Tiffany Cambria of Middleburg, Virginia followed aboard Vavoom, owned by Amanda Hood. Their fault free jump off round in a time of 34.781 would see them finish in third place.

Jordan Gilchrist of Flower Mound, Texas followed Cambria with Anna Beth Athey’s Balizo. A rail at the second to last fence in the jump off round in a time of 34.433 seconds led them to the eighth place finish.

Forte returned to the ring, this time in the irons of Rincola Black Adder, owned by Cerulean Stables, LLC. Their fault free round in a time of 35.947 seconds saw them finish in fourth place.

Brennan was back, this time in the irons of her own Japan. Brennan put the gas on and finished clean in a time of 32.760 seconds, taking the lead.

Shepherd had one more ride to go and entered the ring in the irons of Loretta Patterson’s Triompf. Triompf and Shepherd are regulars in the Winner’s Circle so all eyes were on the pair as they took to the field. A rail at the second to last fence gave them four faults in a time of 32.842 seconds, which would see them finish in seventh place overall.

“The crowd was thrilled with the lady jockeys today,” commented Janet McCarroll, Gulf Coast Classic Show Coordinator. “Everyone was tail gating, petting the miniature ponies out there and just having a great time,” she added. “We hope everyone comes back every weekend and joins us here for more show jumping action!”

Gulf Coast Winter Classic Wins USHJA Members Choice Award

Flashpoint Photography.

The Gulf Coast Classic Company is pleased to announce that the Gulf Coast Magnolia Classic was the recipient of the USHJA Members Choice Award for 2014. The Gulf Coast Winter Classics take place each year from February through March at the Harrison County Equestrian Center in Gulfport, Mississippi. This year will mark the show’s 17th anniversary.

“We are thrilled that the Gulf Coast Winter Classic received this prestigious award. While we credit our dedicated team of professionals, our sponsors, the magnificent show grounds and fun exhibitor parties and events, we appreciate being recognized by the show community as being one of their top choices of horse shows,” commented Bob Bell, President of the Classic Company and the Gulf Coast Classic Company.

The fact that Classic Company’s key technical director, Allen Rheinheimer of Zionsville, Indiana and longtime Classic Company team member, had three of his shows this year win this prestigious USHJA Members Choice Award is no coincidence.

Rheinheimer acts as Manager of Equifest, Old Salem and Technical Director of all of the Gulf Coast Classic and Classic Company shows, to name a few. Equifest, Old Salem and the Gulf Coast Magnolia Classic Week III all received the prestigious USHJA Members Choice Awards for 2014.

“I’m very honored to have had three of my shows selected for USHJA Member Choice Awards,” commented Rheinheimer. “I have been fortunate to have a great staff at each event to give the exhibitors such a positive experience to bestow such an award. I look forward to 2015 to improve upon our weaknesses and enhance the showing experience of each exhibitor.”

The USHJA Member’s Choice Award provides participants the opportunity to reward excellence at USEF-licensed hunter/jumper competitions through their feedback relating to competition, facility, location, footing, personnel and hospitality. From world-class grounds, top quality footing and a celebrated show experience, exhibitors rated Rheinheimer’s shows as a top choice.

“We are so proud of Allen [Rheinheimer] and what he has accomplished. To have three shows that he works for win this prestigious award speaks volumes on the value he brings to his shows and his commitment to the industry,” commented Bob Bell.

“We are so happy that Allen is part of the Gulf and Classic Company circuits,” said Bell. “We have always valued Allen’s contribution to our shows and this award makes it clear that the competitors also appreciate all that he does for them and the sport,” he added.

The Member’s Choice Awards Program was developed by USHJA’s Competition Standards Committee to reward technically excellent and exhibitor-friendly event and encourage communication between exhibitors and management.

Saluting the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic Champions

Friday and Saturday night the Gulf Coast’s Toughest Rodeo took place under the covered pavilion to the delight of the sold out audience. Flashpoint Photography.

The Mississippi Gulf Coast Winter Classic ended its 16th year with a bang for its final weekend and was host to the Gulf Coast’s Toughest Rodeo which featured bull riding and barrel racing championship competitions as an exclamation point to the six week circuit! Friday and Saturday nights after a full day of hunter and jumper competitions, the trick riding, barrel racers and bull riders would compete and perform in front of a sold out audience under the covered pavilion.

Over the course of six weeks, 5,000 plus horses made the Gulf Coast Winter Classic their stomping grounds.

And those 5,000 horses brought with them trainers, riders, grooms, owners, sponsors, supporters, families and friends from all over the globe.  “I have been coming to this show for fifteen years and this was by far the best Gulf Coast Winter Classic I have ever attended,” said Professional Rider Andy Kocher of St. Louis Lake, Missouri.  Kocher won the final week’s $5,000 Open Jumper Welcome as well as Sunday’s $25,000 Domino’s Pizza Grand Prix.

Riders came from all over the country to experience the southern hospitality and top show management which are the hallmark traits of the Gulf Coast Classic Company.  Texas in particular moved into the Mississippi Gulf Coast February through mid-March.  “Texans LOVE Gulfport,” said Amateur rider Palmer Valentine who rides with Trapp O’Neal at TKO Sporthorses in Magnolia, Texas.

Trapp O'Neal and Kathy Epperson's Kingsride
Trapp O’Neal and Kathy Epperson’s Kingsride

Why does Texas love the Gulf Coast?  “For me and a lot of us, that grass field is a phenomenal field to ride in and the entire show is really friendly from the office to the in-gate,” said Trapp O’Neal.  “We spend a majority of our days at the rings day after day and it’s so nice to have a friendly staff out there working with us and our clients,” he added.

The Gulf Coast Winter Classic offered ten grand prix this year, five hunter derbies including the $15,000 International Hunter Derby and more than one million in cash and prizes.  While the Texans are always at the show, this year there were more Texans than the previous year.  “Speaking as a Texan trainer, there were more people from Texas in Gulfport this year and I think the prize money was a big factor. Some people left Ocala early to show in Gulfport too.  There was a lot of good prize money to jump for week after week,” said O’Neal.

“There are plenty of shows out there in Florida.  But the way I see it, the Gulf Coast Winter Classic is unique, competitive, they have outstanding course designers, a real division on the grass for all levels of horses and you just can’t get that anywhere – you can only find it here.

“I have a lot of young horses with me and have a lot of customers on young horses. The fact that the young jumper division takes place on that beautiful grass turf which is the focal point of the show grounds with the nicest jumps and the best course designers allows my horses to develop a level of confidence on that grass that they wouldn’t get elsewhere; it’s so good for them.  That for me is the biggest draw.  The fact that this show is good for my horses and makes for such a positive experience in their development which boosts their confidence and inevitably contributes to the positive foundation of their show careers is fantastic.”

Only 10 minutes to the Gulf of Mexico, downtown historic Gulfport and Long Beach, and only a twenty minute drive to neighboring Biloxi and the world famous casinos and shows, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic offers something for everyone!  “My clients love the environment, the great seafood, the fact that they are on the water with a really cool town to enjoy. They love renting their beachfront condos and having everything just minutes from them from the casinos to the historic towns to the outlets to the show grounds,” commented O’Neal.

Don’t forget the festive atmosphere.  The Mississippi Gulf Coast Winter Classic runs during the world-renowned Mardi Gras season and that festive feeling permeates the show grounds.  “My clients loved the short drive to New Orleans for Mardi Gras – they just had a blast!  This is my third consecutive year here and we will definitely be back next year too.  A lot of my customers are already renting their condos for next year’s circuit,” O’Neal added.

The Genn family of Lebanon, Ohio makes their horse show experience a family affair.  Ryan flies in from SCAD [Savanah College of Art and Design] each weekend while his brother Theo and father Wilhelm train, ride and show all week on the show grounds.  Wilhelm and his own Happy Z had a magnificent Gulf Coast Classic Winter Circuit and while she will be starting her second career as a brood mare, Happy will certainly be seen at the shows this spring.  “We are going to continue to show her at the shows where she likes the footing and where she is happy. She has been going so well and just loves her job, so we’ll keep doing it and ease her into the breeding,” commented Wilhelm.

Allen Nabors of Ocala, Florida and Christi Israel brought five horses for their first visit to the Mississippi Gulf Coast this winter.  “We were here for about two and a half weeks.  We did mostly the grand prix; we brought mostly the young ones because this is a great place to develop those who have not been on the show circuit much.

“What separates this circuit is everyone here is really nice.  The grass footing is much better than any of the other grass footings we have ridden on.  It gives you a nice feel to gallop on and Bob [Bell] has some of the best course designers out there.  Our philosophy is to bring the horses up slowly and with a solid foundation and to find the shows that offer classes that complement our approach.  We’ve got some nice young horses and this circuit works well for them.”

How about the town?  “We’ve been to the Half Shell every single night.  And the casinos are fun as long as we don’t lose too much – but we won so we’re happy,” Nabors added.

Penny Brennan of Ocala, Florida had a good showing with her own Sun Tzu and they were a force to contend with during grand prix jump-off rounds.

New Jersey native Devin Ryan of Long Valley and his string of horses spent the winter at the Gulf Coast Winter Classic.

Tim Maddrix, grand prix rider and International Hunter Derby winner from Baltimore, Maryland, said, “Showing in the International Hunter Derby in Gulfport is one of my favorite classes of the year.” He added, “To show on this beautiful grass field in the hunters with these amazing fences is just the best. The Classic Company does such a nice job.”

Owens Wins Week V $25,000 Welcome Prix at the Gulf Coast Winter Classic

Frank Owens and DS Holdings, LLC’s Capricello 2 win the $25,000 Open Welcome Prix. Flashpoint Photography.

San Antonio Texas’ Frank Owens won the $25,000 Open Jumper Welcome Prix yesterday, besting a group of 26 riders who traveled from around the country to take part in week V of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Winter Classic.

The course was designed by Steve Stephens of Palmetto, Florida.  Stephens is known around the world as one of the most accomplished course designers in the industry. As a USEF R licensed hunter course designer, 4* FEI course designer, R jumper course designer, and judge, Stephens has pretty much done it all, including show jumping course designer for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“My goal was to get more clear in the jump off than you have seen for the whole season,” said Stevens. “I wanted to get seven clean in this class and I accomplished that.” Stephens continued, “I am really pleased with what I am seeing. These jumps are big and the horses are going really well.  It’s a national standard. If they can handle this, then they can handle the plus side of this where we’ll be on Sunday and I’m going to look for five clear.  It makes it more interesting for everyone.”

Stephens continued, “I think everyone thinks that I’m coming into town and I’m going to kill them, but I’m not!” he admitted.  “But I think they’re rising to the occasion; I think that’s what’s going on,” he said.

Owens rode DS Holdings, LLC’s Capricello 2 in the first to go spot and delivered a clean first round effort in a time of 97.651 seconds, within the 99 seconds time allowed.

Andrew Kocher of Lake St. Louis, Missouri and his own Le Conte turned in the second clear round in a time of 98.939 seconds and insured there would be a jump off.

Wilhelm Genn of Lebanon, Ohio and his own Happy Z were next to go and made a jump off trio with their time of 95.979 seconds.  Scott Lenkart of Lantana, Texas and his own Impulsive were next to go and their clean round of 89.052 seconds would advance them to the jump off too.

After a seeming string of clear first rounds, there followed a series of fault filled rounds and it was not until Ryan Genn of Lebanon, Ohio in the irons of his father Wilhelm’s Cookie Monster who would turn in a clear round in a time of 94.315 seconds.  Daniel Grice of Northfield, Minnesota and Loretta Patterson’s Rapid Rewards would be the next clear round turned in, but with a time of 101.089 seconds, would incur three time faults and not advance to the jump off, finishing in eighth place overall.

Wilhelm Genn returned to the ring, this time in the irons of Eduardo Leon’s Bugatti and turned in a first round clear effort in a time of 98.914 seconds.  Penny Brennan of Ocala, Florida would be the final clean first round in the irons of her own Sun Tzu in a time of 96.552 seconds.

Stevens set the time to beat for the jump off at 48 seconds and Owens was the first to tackle the course with Capricella 2. The pair went clean and set the time to beat at 40.869 seconds.  With six to follow, the win was still up for grabs.

Kocher and La Conte took to the field next, but after a rail down in the combination, would finish fifth overall with a time of 39.424 seconds.

Wilhelm Genn and Happy Z, the most winning grand prix horse in the country, took to the field next, but after dropping a rail at the combination, their time of 37.702 seconds would see them finish in third overall.

Lenkart and Impulsive were next to challenge Owens, but with a rail down at the combination and the last fence, would finish them in 36.410 seconds and seventh overall.  Cookie Monster and Genn were next to go but the pair dropped a rail on the first fence.  Their jump off round in a time of 39.603 seconds would see them finish in sixth place overall.

Genn returned on his second mount for the jump off, Eduardo Leon’s Bugatti, and turned in a clean jump off effort.  However, their time of 41.840 seconds would place them in second place overall.  Brennan sat in the enviable last to go spot with her own Sun Tzu but had a rail in the combination and their time of 38.444 seconds placed them in fourth place overall.

“I think he did a really good job for it being a welcome class.  He is very good at what he does and although we had seven clean, I think he did the right thing,” commented Owens.

“I had a couple of rough weeks so I took last week off and just reset and just went in and tried to make it look nice,” commented Owens.

Owens will be riding Capricello 2 on Sunday in the $77,700 Governor’s Cup Grand Prix, presented by Beau Rivage.

Mississippi Gulf Coast Winter Classic Week V Celebrates Derby Days

Maddrix and Eloise win the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby. Flashpoint Photography.

The fifth week of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Winter Classic featured the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby, the $3,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby, and is a World Champion Hunter Rider event.

Tim Maddrix of Monkton, Maryland in the irons of Claudia Styslinger’s Eloise beat out a very talented field of 21 horses and riders to win the $15,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby yesterday.  “It was awesome.  The sun came out right before we went into the ring. The course is beautiful!” commented Maddrix.

Allen Rheinheimer of Zionsville, Indiana designed the impressive hunter course which included a spectacular array of barrel jumps, logs, trees as well as an assortment of oxers.  The crowd spilled out from the VIP tent to the stands and all enjoyed a full breakfast that turned into brunch as they watched the Derby contestants battle it out for win.

Maddrix and Eloise scored a total of 181 points in the first round which included three Option bonus points and seven Handy Bonus points.  His second round score awarded him a total of 194.5 point which included three Option Bonus points and five Handy Bonus points for a grand overall total of 375.5 points. “I jumped all of the high options; there were a bunch in the class and a bunch of really good horses and I think by doing so helped us come out with the win,” he said.

Second place was Courtney Calcagnini of Lantana, Texas in the irons aboard Fleur De Lis Farms’ Elementary.  The pair turned in a combined score of 356.50.  Martien Van Der Hoeven of The Woodlands, Texas rode Julie Thompson’s Celino to third place honors with a combined overall score of 355.5.  Holly Shepherd of Grand Bay, Alabama took fourth place honors with LPF, LLC’s LPF Woodford and a combined score of 354.  Calcagnini returned to collect her fifth place ribbon in the irons of Kendall Whitt’s Calluci and a combined score of 350.50.  Colleen Acosta of South Lake, Texas rode Sophia Depumpo’s Limbo after turning in a combined score of 337.  Callie Schott, of Versailles, Kentucky, in the irons of Devon Craig’s Grappa, placed seventh for her total score of 332. Holly Shepherd of Grand Bay, Alabama collected an eighth place ribbon with Debbie Holland’s Flamboyant after the two earned an overall score of 327.

Andrew Kocher rode Julie Dodd’s Arthur to a ninth place position with a combined score of 318.  Tenth was awarded to Pamela Bartholomew’s Quedo Z, ridden by Kim Buzby of Chester Springs, Maryland, for their overall score of 308.  Eleventh place was awarded to Lincoln Russell’s Patrona, ridden by Kristen Cox of Columbus, North Carolina, and wrapping up the class in twelfth place was Kalifornia, owned and ridden by Heather Zuber of Zionsville, Indiana.

“This is my favorite class all year to show in on this field. Classic Company really does a great job with the jumps.  Being able to show a hunter on the grand prix field is just a blast to ride on and I had a great time,” commented Maddrix.

Quinn Takes the Win!

Derby fever continued when thirty five horses tackled the $3,500 USHJA National Hunter Derby course designed by Allen Rheinheimer.

But it was Quinn, owned by Catherine Cox and ridden by Kim Buzby of Chester Springs, Maryland, who bested the competition with a combined score of 184.5.

Timothy Maddrix, this time in the irons of Mary Elise Nolen’s Life Is Good, secured second place with a score of 184, and Jordan Gilchrist of Flower Mound, Texas rode Shawn Hodgen’s Argentina to third place with a combined score of 178.

Fallon Bock of Dallas, Texas rode her own Chf Heart N’ Soul to the fourth place ribbon with a combined score of 177 and Timothy Maddrix rode Abigail Beaty’s Third Day to fifth place with a combined score of 174.  Maddrix returned to collect the sixth place ribbon, this time aboard Cynthia Hallman’s Fig Street’s Duchess; the pair earned a combined score of 166.  Buzby returned for seventh place with Amy Trout’s Drum Roll Please who earned a combined score of 163.5 and Sarah Young of Spring Hill, Kansas rode Gabrielle Smoller’s Salmon Run to eight place honors and a combined score of 162.

“All of the horses jumped really well,” said Rheinheimer.  “I think horses get a lot out of doing the National Derby after the International, especially considering the more unique elements we have on the field,” he said.

The Genn Men Dominate the $50,000 CWD Grand Prix

Wilhelm Genn and his own Happy Z fly over a fence on the CWD fence en route to the winner’s circle. Photo by MH Hamm.

Patriarch Wilhelm Genn of Lebanon, Ohio and his sons Ryan and Theo took the top three placings in Sunday’s $50,000 CWD Grand Prix at the Mississippi Gulf Coast Winter Classic in Gulfport Sunday.

World-renowned, international course designer Michel Vaillancourt, originally from Montreal, Canada and now living in Aiken, South Carolina, designed the course.  Vaillancourt made history by becoming the first Canadian equestrian athlete to win an Individual Olympic medal.  Even more meaningfully, it was a feat he accomplished in his hometown of Montreal during the 1976 Olympic Games.

Due to the less than perfect weather last weekend, Technical Adviser, Allen Rheinheimer of Zionsville, Indiana, decided to run the class in one of the all-weather footing jumper arenas.  Theo Genn commented on the move of rings: “It was the right call to put it on the sand and off the grass. It’s the first time I’ve ever seen them move the grand prix from the turf field to sand in the past seven years. But even though the weather had been less than nice, Michel [Vaillancourt] designed a pretty tough course.  It was a pretty good height and technical I’m sure because of that new rule that requires a certain amount of meter fifty jumps, and it was tough.”

Bob Bell, President of the Gulf Coast Classic Company, said, “Janet, Allen and I sat ringside and made a plan because of the weather forecast.  We decided to put up a second VIP tent and prepare for either rings.  The morning of the grand prix, we had both VIP tents up and ready with tables, champagne and centerpieces.  The weather would decide which tent and which ring was going to be used.  Since the rain continued, although not pouring, just raining, we went with the all-purpose ring, Jumper 2, and opted out of the turf grand prix field,” he said.  “The tent was filled and all went great.  The rain stopped when they were building the course and there was no rain during the class.”

“I give Allen Rheinheimer a salute for his foresight and planning.  We revised the entire schedule because of the weather last weekend.  The hunters finished about noon on Sunday since Saturday’s schedule was revised and all in all, everyone, including the management team, was pleased with the how we handled the schedule and the rings while planning for the weather,” he concluded.

But despite the weather, the Genn men were the only three to go clean in the class.  Wilhelm Genn rode his own Happy Z to the win in a first round score of 74.578 seconds, while his son Ryan rode Wilhelm’s Cookie Monster to a second place finish in 81.752 seconds and Theo Genn rode Thomas Bruinsma’s Paradox to the third place finish in a time of 76.614 seconds.  In view of the weather, the Genn trio opted to not jump off and call it a tie.  “We were the only three to go clean, so we’re going to split up the prize money evenly.  We all really won,” commented Theo Genn of Lebanon, Ohio.

The fastest of the four-faulters was CWD sponsored rider, Devin Ryan of Long Valley, New Jersey, who rode Sima Mogrello’s Chantilly to the fourth place finish with four jump faults and a time of 74.741 seconds.  Trapp O’Neal of Magnolia, Texas rode TKG Partnership’s Capitano to fifth place in a time of 77.098 seconds and four jump faults while Jay Land of Alpharetta, Georgia rode his and Kim Land’s own Nepal to a sixth placing in a time of 82.881 seconds and four jump faults.  Eagle Valley Partners’ LLC’s Boucanier, ridden by Devin Ryan, turned in a time of 76.682 seconds and eight jump faults, finishing in seventh, while Christi Israel of Birmingham, Alabama piloted her own Cracky Z to an eighth place finish with a time of 77.637 seconds and eight jump faults.  Loretta Patterson’s horses Rapid Rewards, ridden by Dani Grice of Northfield, Minnesota, and Skymiles, ridden by Holly Shepherd of Grand Bay, Alabama, finished in ninth and tenth places, respectively.

Wilhelm Genn commented, “This is our last winter circuit for Happy [Z] before we retire her and start her second career as a brood mare, so we’re very happy to see her win and add yet another grand prix to her resume.  We’re hoping that she can hold onto the title of the most grand prix won in America.”  Genn continued, “That’s for all mares, geldings and stallions. She has been amazing.  She is a once in a lifetime horse and we have a very special relationship.”

Ryan Genn is a full time student at SCAD [Savanah College of Art and Design] in Charleston, South Carolina and was unavailable for comment.  However, his brother Theo spoke on his behalf: “Ryan is a full time student at SCAD and it’s really hard for him to balance his time between riding and school… but he does it. It is really impressive that he can fly in on a Friday and jump so well on Cookie Monster and go clean on him, especially since he [Cookie Monster] is still pretty green in the grand prix. Ryan is an extremely talented rider and he will undoubtedly be one of the best in the sport,” he added.

Why did only the Genn horses go clean?  Theo Genn provided his perspective: “Our horses are jumping just incredible.  On Sunday, I tried to jump less in the warm up, so I jumped half of the jumps I would usually jump. I just tried to stretch him out.  My Dad and Ryan and I all do our own thing in the warm up, but I would guess they probably did the same thing.”

Happy Z continues her reign as the most winning grand prix horse in the country. Flashpoint Photography

What is the secret of their success?  “I think we just try to keep the horses happy.  We’re trying not to over work them. And when we work, we’re having fun with them and I think that makes them happy and love to do their job,” he added.

Genn continued, “Paradox is pretty experienced and he is having the best year he has ever had.  He is 14 this year and I think he’s hitting his prime.  He was a difficult, nervous horse when he was younger but as he matures, he is starting to relax and is jumping with a lot of confidence.  We bought him in Germany as an un-shown six year old and brought him to the States.  Thomas Bruinsma bought him from us but has kept him in training with us in order to support me and allow me to ride him.  He has been very supportive and helpful and what can I say, he is an amazing, very selfless man,” he said.

“Paradox has been jumping the grand prix like they are schooling classes.  Out of the last five grand prix, he has been second twice, third, fourth and tied this one for first.  Top four in the last five grand prix – he is jumping so well!” he added.
